how to utilize personal journals?

hopefully this hasn't been asked yet. i'm new at the roleplaying jazz so i was wondering: is it preferable to leave all roleplaying journal entries open? is there anyone who has thought about, or is currently, working in the friends filters (so that only people the character trusts can see certain details of proposed plot?)? and how are the journals to be used within the game itself, since other players can comment on them?

Personally, I would prefer journal entries open. I like to check this journal without logging out of my main journal, and locking posts kind of makes that impossible. Email and IM are much better ways of communicating, IMO. You can also "privatize" an entry by putting that in the pubject line.

I have friends filters, but I won't be using them to lock my posts: I'll be using them to limit whose RPG entries I see. Specifically, I'll check the characters with whom my character has regular interaction.

In general posts are left open so that the viewing audience can read along. It's common practice to write something like [LOCKED TO X, Y, AND Z] in subject lines to indicate only X, Y, and Z can "see" the post and comment, or [PRIVATE ENTRY] for a private entry. Even if people can see it for dramatic purposes, it's kinda on the honor system not to *act* on that knowledge.

Well, I'll be checking the whole group, but with at least a couple of hundred people in this comm and limited time, there is No Way In All Heaven And Earth Through The Multiverses that I'll get through them all!

You can also always disable comments for a post if you don't want anyone to respond.

I've been using my lj as a room/ to write what's happened to Paige (but wouldn't be public knowledge) and what's she's thinking
