Times of event occurrence? (kind of lost here)

are people creatively changing times of their posts to make it appear as though things are happening at night, morning, afternoon, whatever? i'm having trouble keeping track, in part because livejournal seems to creatively rearrange post times itself. so i rarely know when any of the events are taking place and it makes it difficult to decide whether it makes sense to interact with people...

in a similar vein, how are people handling the problem of everyone logging in at somewhat different times? i'd like to have anya go home, but for example she hasn't had her 10am class (Business 301 with Prof. Cregg) yet, and i'm not sure whether I should just backdate tomorrow when she reflects on the day's experiences in her own journal. i'm also having problems progressing any plot for similar reasons...

*whine whine whine grumble grumble* seriously, how are you guys getting around the inherent problems? i'm such a newbie.

I think since FH exists in another dimension - we're just posting/commenting when its convenient.

Yeah. Hard to say. I'm not backdating anything. But I'm also playing out of Max's journal (meaning that I'm playing by myself. I personally check my filters, so "students"/"school"/"ooc"/etc... which means that when people post to their journal, I see it on my student list, and when they crosspost it to "/fandomhigh" -- I see it a second time.

There should probably be some kind of a method primer, so it's easier to navigate. I don't think you're the only person having problems. I know I am.

Yeah, I've wondered that myself... commenting on different threads means my character is essentially in 4 different places at the same time. I think just for now play fast and loose with the time frame until things get more settled.

But then, I'm a total newbie to online RP, too!

One of my issues is that I'm physically in Australia. At the time of posting, it's midday, Tuesday.

Result of which, my computer timestamps the posts Tuesday midday. (But it doesn't stamp the comments the same - I think they're set to US Eastern.)

I'm trying to work most things as US, but I don't really want to change the timestamps for every single post. Also, I think that time runs differently since people are from all over the (Earth) globe. And we don't actually want to sit through those classes, do we?

So, maybe just take it as it comes, be flexible, and have fun, while trying not to blow out your brain.

That's pretty much what I've been doing. Like right now my fingers are typing out both Angelus in study hall and Angelus having a meeting that night with two other characters. I figure as long as I can keep it vaguely straight in my head it's no big deal, plus doesn't penalize players who can't log on at the same time I can.

::shrug:: Catch as catch can? Some of us have been keeping odd hours.

I can't sit the classes.
My mun has a real-life class at the same time I have class.

Pretty much what everyone else is saying: (And actual backdating will mess with a post showing up on friendslists.) For instance, Vala went to the coffeeshop yesterday noonish, but Chloe didn't respond until overnight, so I kept up my "noon yesterday coversation" in one thread at the same time I was doing my "this morning" posts... at random times all day today.

"Times" are arbitrarily assigned by LJ half the time anyway. Mostly just indicate within when the intitial post takes place (give it a setting), and then that thread can continue to be in that time frame. Any 'backdating' then just means making a comment now in the "yesterday afternoon" thread.

Just ignore the actual timestamps, especially since we have people playing in all different timezones. :)

Trust me, it's the only way to stay sane. If your teacher hasn't posted a class thread for the day, either post your attendance (late or not as you choose) when they get around to it tomorrow. (Or, if it's way late, just consider blowing it off "finding the classroom empty" or something. ;-)

Don't Panic. Also? Remember to breathe. :)

I'm definitely just playing each post Xander comments in as something happening at... whatever time it's happening. And for the most part carefully not mentioning things that are going on in other posts. Like Angelus and I are currently having about three separate conversations, one on the campus commons, one in our dorm room after moving in...

I'd definitely go nuts if I tried to keep all of them straight in relation to each other, esp. since I am teh supah-slow at tagging back with comments. (Particularly this week when I've got an unrelated Big Fannish Timesuck I have to be working on.)

Uhm. What everyone else said, mostly what [livejournal.com profile] carter_i_am said actually, being in NZ and so on and so forth.

So far my character has been three places at once. But in my mind there's *sort* of a timeline of events. As long as my character acting over here doesn't somehow directly come in contact with the situation over THERE, it's all good and can be explain away later.

[identity profile] aka-vala.livejournal.com 2005-09-13 08:07 am (UTC)(link)
I was 'busy' for about a day and a half -- and since the new crew showed up I'm not sure I've done *anything*... it's all too much! :-/

I'm figuring it will settle down in a day or two, plus I'm setting up filters so I'm only trying to follow the characters/threads I'm working with (or just laughing a whole lot at).

If all else fails, start (http://www.livejournal.com/community/fandomhighdorms/18615.html) a commotion (http://www.livejournal.com/community/fandomhighdorms/21490.html#cutid1) somewhere (http://www.livejournal.com/users/leeadama/1960.html) in the dorms or school -- it gives other players at loose ends a chance to jump in and join your thread. :)

I've given up this RL thing and am generally going to at 2am so I can interact with people in all timezones, I'm just posting in the time it is here (generally, my LJ time is sometimes changed to indicate morning)

[identity profile] the4thsister.livejournal.com 2005-09-13 10:46 am (UTC)(link)
That would be going to bed! (sorry sleep deprived!)

> If all else fails, start a commotion somewhere

I'd like to remind all students that my cookery class will start in just under six hours.

OOC - 6pm UK time, 1pm US east coast, 10am US west coast ... god knows when in Australia. And I'll be using words like "lunch".

I can't imagine there will be any disruption at all during the class. No, I can't foresee that at all. Goodness me no. It'll be fine.
