Spotlight on Fandoms: Ranma 1/2

Hiya Fandom! Forgive me for rambling. I’m spotlighting Ranma ½ today!

What is Ranma ½?

Ranma ½ is a Japanese comic (manga) that’s reallllly long. Then it became an anime that was also reallllly long. I personally enjoy reading it rather than watching it, this holds true for… pretty much everything (like book-based movies!)

The most important thing to know about Ranma ½ is that it’s a comedy. It’s safe to say it’s a very situational comedy, based on knowing the characters and then throwing in gimmicks. That’s what Ranma ½ is about for... I’d say 34 of the 36 volumes of the manga. The anime however is entirely that way.

It’s not extremely plot driven, once you know the characters, you can watch/read a random episode and it will make sense. For the most part…

Main Characters

Ranma Saotome: Our hero! Or at least our main character… Basically almost every other character in the series exists to annoy Ranma. He fell into the Spring of Drowned Girl and now turns into a girl when he’s hit with cold water.

Genma Saotome: Ranma’s father. He’s a HORRIBLE horrible terrible person. He’s the reason for almost all the problems in the series. He fell into the Spring of Drowned Panda. His only redeemable quality is that he didn’t pass on much to Ranma. He’s out for himself and himself only.

Akane Tendo: Ranma’s first revealed fiancé. Ranma and Akane have a relationship mostly made up of misunderstandings. Though they do share obvious feelings for each other. Not that Rumiko develops their relationship much, unfortunately.

Ryoga Hibiki: Ranma’s biggest rival, in Akane’s affections and in battle, at least he’s the one who actually improves along with Ranma through the series. He was pushed into the Spring of Drowned Black Piglet by Ranma and Genma.

Shampoo: Ranma’s second fiancé who’s from China. He was engaged to her by mistake, he defeated her in battle and subsequently was engaged to her by doing so. She was tossed into the Spring of Drowned Cat. Ranma has little to no interest in her.

Mousse: He’s in love with Shampoo and wants to defeat Ranma to win Shampoo’s hand in marriage and her affections. He’s been cursed by the Spring of Drowned Duck.

Ukyo: Ranma’s third fiancé. Genma promised Ranma to her in exchange for a Japanese pizza cart. After he got the cart he ran off without Ukyo.

Tatawaki Kuno: Pretty much the only person in the series who doesn’t understand that male and female Ranma are the same person. He’s in love with both Akane and Female Ranma.

There’s way too many more so I’m cutting off there.

The Plot

The plot centers around Ranma, who has been trained in the martial arts his whole life and gets cursed by an ancient training ground in China. This training ground is basically a big field with lots of ponds and big old bamboo poles sticking out of them. The thing about these ponds is that each one has a unique curse, the thing that last drowned in the pond leaves a curse on it and anyone who falls in takes on that shape when splashed with cold water.

The pools turn the cursed person into their own version of whatever they’re to transform into. For instance, Ranma fell into the Spring of Drowned Girl. When he transforms he looks like a girl version of himself, NOT like the girl who originally drowned there.

After getting Genma was cursed by the Spring of Drowned Panda, the pair finally returned to Japan. Ranma’s misfortune didn’t really end at this curse, nor did it start there actually, due to the fact that his dad, Genma, has Ranma promised to be married to more than one girl. The first book/episode starts with Ranma being basically kidnapped by his own father and taken to the Tendo house.

Genma and Mr. Tendo have been friends since they were young and Genma promised Tendo that Ranma would one day marry one of Mr. Tendo’s three daughters to inherit the Tendo Dojo. Ranma’s not too keen on arranged marriage, especially now that’s he’s basically half girl. Despite his resistance, he’s matched with Akane, the youngest of Tendo’s daughters. The two act resistant toward the start but they develop feelings for each other as the series goes on.

Later on, more characters are introduced, including love interests for both Ranma’s genders, two more fiance’s (because Genma is... pimping out his son?) and basically all the characters are made to antagonize Ranma (a few of these characters have different Jusenkyo curses) or to engage him in strange forms of martial arts challenges, such as martial arts ice skating, martial arts tea ceremony, and martial arts cheerleading... Yes I’m not joking.

So you want to actually get your hands on this?

First things first, there’s boobs. It’s Japanese. What can I say?

I know that getting a hold of the comics means spending money but if you’re actually interested in this then READ THE COMICS. Heck, even if you don’t want to buy it, slip into Borders or probably any other bookstore and spend about a half hour reading the first one for free.
Book 1

However, if you don’t have the time or money for that kinda thing and you want to see a bit of the anime then I have one important warning. This is an old anime, think early 90s. So it’s going to have an old feel to it, you have to take it like watching an episode of Full House, it’s old but it has charm.
Oh the voice acting… Please let me cry. Forever.
Episode 1
Episode 2
Episode 3
Episode 4 Complete with confused-sexuality naked dreams.

Guy with a lot of the later episodes

Ranma thinks he’s a girl. Since I’ve used this in game a few times. And it kills me dead every time. Also, because I put up the Japanese version, it’s important to note he’s using female ways to say things, and also talking properly, which he doesn’t do, thus from a Japanese perspective, it’s a more drastic and noticeable change.

And the Baka Song. Since it’s classic. And it pretty much sums up the show... Sorry if this gets stuck in your head...

I so posted this in the right place the first time *headdesk*
