Detentions and the Lottery for January 13

Gather round, friends, because it's time for a little chat about detentions. This is your first OOC post on the subject of 2007 and I promise to try to be briefer than I have been in the past.

Disclaimer: I wrote this before falling asleep last night and finished it up after waking up this morning. Mild incoherency is very possible. Using words that spellcheck claims I made up like "incoherency" is also very possible. I'll edit to clarify as necessary.

What? When? Why?

Detentions are, in theory, punishments handed out to students for ICly doing something wrong, breaking some sort of class rule, fighting on campus, etc. Faculty can give detentions for pretty much anything when you get right down to it, but most of them often won't.

Detentions take place on Saturdays from approximately 9-5 EST, although that can vary slightly due to time zones or other game events if necessary. While it should theoretically be punishment for your character, you as a player should hopefully have fun with it.

Detentions take place in The Danger Shop, a holographic environment that teachers can set up to look like pretty much anything they want.

Teacher Responsibilities

Teachers are allowed to give detentions for pretty much anything, but they must give some OOC warning that the student is on thin ice before assigning it. This gives the student player a chance to back off if they'd rather not get one, which we feel is fair. That said, if a student volunteers for a detention in an OOC thread, they've waived that right and can be smacked down.

Teachers can also sign up to run detentions every Saturday in a [livejournal.com profile] fh_office post. If for some reason you cannot run a detention you signed up for, please let me know as soon as possible so that a backup can be contacted or found. Teachers are also responsible for submitting any detentions they assign to the Detention thread in the daily [livejournal.com profile] fh_office post.

Teachers running detention can do pretty much anything they want for detention with a few exceptions. That is the beauty of the Danger Shop. Anyway, the exceptions are:

1) No physically harming any students unless previously arranged with that student and at least checked with an admin in IM (e-mail preferable). Psychological harm is discouraged, but acceptable a couple times a semester.

2) Detention posts should be up early enough on Saturday (or Friday night if that works better) that students can actually play in them and hopefully get through them by 5 ET. Noon ET is a good guideline for the latest you should have it up.

3) The typical detention post should consist of a sign-in thread, 2-3 activities, a break (generally lunch where visitors can stop by if and only if the instructor allows them to), and another 2-3 activities, with an OOC thread for punctuation. Those are guidelines and do not have to be followed exactly. If you just have two long activities, that's fine. If your teacher is an evil bastard who won't allow lunch, that's fine. You have a lot of leeway.

4) The Danger Shop can make holograms of anyone, so it can be used for guest stars of a sort. These guests will NOT have any FH canon at the end of the day, of course, since they are holograms. Also, while any characters the instructor has a reason to know is fair game (for example, Deadpool can have Cyclops appear, call him "Scotty", and give him a noogie), but characters they haven't met must be a bit more vague (Deadpool can have Chandler Bing appear but shouldn't know his name or anything about him. "Guessing" the correct name isn't kosher. If you want him to be a nameless... whatever Chandler did, that's fine. And Deadpool can still give Chandler a noogie). When in doubt, trust your common sense or ping me.

Student Responsibilties

Straight to numbered points!

1) If you are assigned a detention, you're expected to attend it. If you can't for some reason, please contact me ASAP. The detention can either be moved back a week or The Tick can assign an alternative punishment. If you can only attend a detention for a few hours, that's fine. Try to do what you can in that time.

2) Aside from a brief before detention post (if you're inclined to do such a post), we request that you not do any live playing while your character is serving detention. We want you to focus on the task at hand. Pre- or slow-play due to time zones is fine, but your focus should be on the detention. Once you hit 5 ET, though, you're free to do whatever.

3) On a similar note, if you have a character who could get around being in detention (by use of duplicates, teleportation, etc), please don't use that as a loophole without first checking with the instructor and an admin. If you received a detention, you very probably volunteered for it at some point, and we'd like you to remain in it unless it's part of plottiness that you get out of there..

4) Any violence on school grounds in a public place (aside from sparring in the gym or salle, of course) will result in a detention, period. So if you're going to fight without punishment, you should either do it quietly in your room or out in town somewhere.

5) Only students who have been assigned detention can attend detention (aside from visitors during lunch if the instructor allows it). It's easy enough to get one. A lot of teachers even put out the offer to volunteer to receive a detention in the OOC thread of their class post. Otherwise, you can always talk to a faculty member OOCly and arrange something to receive a detention, or you can sign up for the Lottery. More on that in a moment.

Super Important Stuff

Some of this stuff is repeas, but I swear, it is indeed super important. So much more important than just important. It's important and it can fly by using the power of the sun's yellow rays.

Remember, if a detention isn't reported in [livejournal.com profile] fh_office, it's not getting counted.

[livejournal.com profile] bigdamndean usually does a Friday morning announcement post noting everyone who has received a detention that week up to that point. Hooray for public embarrassment!

If you can't attend a detention you signed up for, please contact me or another admin ASAP so alternate arrangements can be made.

And finally, there's the weekly detention lottery. Every week, for some reason, students are picked at random and thrown into detention. Depending on what characters are in the administration at the time, this is done either to make the students afraid, be a jerk, build character, have a positive role model in detention to show everyone how to do it, or possibly just fill seats. Who knows what the real reason is? Not me.

A post (much like this one, but usually without so much text behind a cut) will go up on Thursday and you can sign up to be randomly selected. Depending on what detention looks like that week, the random selection can be a truly random picking of one person, or possibly a couple people, or if there's a good reason to do so, everyone who signed up can be picked. Good reasons include a light detention, a popular detention, and boredom.

That said, if you'd like to have detention with Deadpool without actually working for it, please sign up in the OCD thread down below.
