Teacher Sample Application

Player Name: Cornelius
Player Age: 34
Contact Email: likeasomeonebroken@hotmail.com
AIM: RobThomasLuvsFH
Other Characters Played at Fandom High: None

Character Name: Sam the (American) Eagle

Potential Character LJ Handle: nudityisbad

Fandom: The Muppet Show

Age: late 30s/early 40s

Position You Are Applying For:
TIP: You can be general or specific. You can let us know your class/workshop or just the general area they'll be teaching - ie: social science.
Patriotism Yay! Teacher (possibly American Studies for Fall)

Apperance:
TIP: All that is needed is a brief description of identifying features to give an outsider a quick overview of what the character looks like.
Big, blue, covered in feathers, large black eyebrows, enormous beak, naked most of the time, but acceptable due to anthropomorphized form.

General Background:
TIP: Provide some canonical information about the character's life and personality.
Sam the American Eagle was part of The Muppet Show troupe led by Kermit the Frog for many years. He is a blue bald eagle that can walk, talk and give sermons on any topic you can think of. He served as the conservative moral conscience of the show, lecturing about the indecency of people being naked under their clothes among other things.

He is an extremely patriotic American (after all, he is an American Bald Eagle) and can often be found trying to incite similar feelings of national pride in his fellow patriots, often much to their dismay.

TIP: Give some info on your character's canon situation.
After The Muppet Show ended and the cast went on to other projects, Sam toured the lecture circuit at many conservative colleges, then high schools when the colleges ran out, then junior high schools, then elementary schools. He occasionally joined his former acting troupe when there was work, asked nicely for guest roles on the popular children's show Poppyseed Lane and has done some substitute teaching.

TIP: State where in canon you are taking the character from, how the character is coming to Fandom High and why.
Unfortunately, the money he had saved in a fiscally responsible way was running short and, at a recent reunion of The Muppet Show cast and crew, he heard Kermit the Frog discuss a boarding school on the east coast. It turned out that Kermit was a member of the school board and, after some convincing that Sam would be more than suitable to shape the minds of tomorrow's young Americans (and foreigners and aliens - he wasn't discriminatory), Kermit arranged for Sam to do some substitute teaching at the school. When a full-time position opened up, Sam jumped at the chance to apply for it.

Except he didn't really jump. Eagles do not jump. It is indecent.

TIP: Account for any reasons why your character might cause too much trouble to other characters.
The worst damage Sam will do is lecture people to death, but as with keeping with the character's canon, it will be in a humorous way. He may also feel the animal instinct to swoop and attack weetiny bunnies, but he'll do his best to fight that urge.

Links to character/series information:
TIP: Provide 2-3 links to info about your character and their show/book/movie/game/etc. If you cannot find any links because your fandom is too obscure, please give us some details about the fandom.

Do you intend to play only for the summer, or do you think at this stage that you will want to stay on for the Fall? (Note: This will not affect whether you're accepted or not. We're just curious and like to keep track of numbers!)
Simple yes or no. Seriously, it won't affect whether you're accepted or not. That will depend on how good your application is. We just like to know peoples' intentions and know who's coming and going so we can plan accordingly.

Problem Solving: You don't get what you want. How will you react within the game in character and out of character?
TIP: You're on your own for this one! Answer it truthfully. There is no single right answer. We just want to see how well you'll deal if something comes up.

Writing Sample: Please write at least 300 words *in character* having your character do something, anything, at Fandom High.
TIP: We don't know you. We don't know your character. We don't know how well you know your character and how well you have a grasp on the character's voice. This is where you show off those mad skills. We like proper spelling and decent grammar. A good estimation of the length needed to show off your character is about 300 words. If you would like to show off your mad teaching skillz, go right ahead.

"Greeeetings!" Sam the Eagle was perched at the front of the class. He was trying to look all official and proper, but ended up looking quite constipated. The class may have been wondering what was going on, considering there was a large, blue, anthropomorphized eagle sitting there where Professor Lyman should have been. "Boys and girls, it is I - Sam the American Eagle. I would just like to say a few words about reading the federal budget today. You see, budgeting is the American way! All good Americans budget. It is the fiscally responsible thing to do. And today, fine, upstanding students attending an American school, I - Sam the American Eagle - will teach you a few things about reading the budget made by the American government.

First of all - do not read it. The federal budget is none of your concern, children. You should let the American government handle the hows and whys of money spending and be glad that money is being spent on you at all. Too much money, in my humble patriotic opinion, but it is not my place to judge, nor is it yours. Many significant and intellectual people come together to make the budget for the American people. They are much smarter than you. They have college degrees, dental plans and corner offices. They know what they are doing. Trust in your government! Read only what you need to read and then you too will be prepared to complain about not getting enough money for your pet project. But know that very smart people were arguing behind doors, probably nude, to get the job done. And a magnificent job it is indeed.

This is Sam the American Eagle telling you to love the American government, trust that it loves you and do not forget to study for your midterm on Friday."

Course Description: State what you intend to teach in your new class - ie: show evidence that you know what you're doing and actually have an idea of what you want to teach for your summer workshop. If you have any idea of what you'd like to do for Fall classes, you can tell us, but it's not required at all.

TIP: Get a workshop name, the overall idea and some suggestions of what you might do for weekly workshops. You should demonstrate that you'll be able to run this for 7-8 weeks and keep getting ideas for it every week. You should also keep in mind that players come from all over the world and won't be online at the same time, so there should be some flexibility with activities so people don't have to absolutely rely on each other for heavy interaction in order to participate.

Patriotism Yay!

Each workshop will focus on a different way to express enthusiasm for the student's home country. These workshops will take the form of arts and crafts, plays about significant moments of history, celebrity heads with historical figures, debating for and against a country and making patriotic food. Other tasks may include getting the students to make their own country with details including name, flag, style of government and general policies to get them to 'appreciate' the hard work that goes into making a great nation. The class won't take a serious approach. It'll be all about fun, mockery and generally having a good time doing activities that can be done alone or in groups to suit players' availability and time zones.
