I do this all the time. I rarely use the friending list anymore because I'm impatient, so I click on new journals in the welcome post and add them manually that way. I just do one at a time and go down the list and it's super easy, especially when you get into a pattern with it. I'll give you that it's extra annoying if you're apping two people at once, but that doesn't happen that often that way.
