Fandomhigh_Classes?

Hi. Would it be possible, considering the amount of traffic [livejournal.com profile] fandomhigh gets, to make a seperate community strictly for teachers to post classes and homework assignments in? It's extremely frustrating to try and keep up. Not all the teachers post their current assignment stuff in their personal journals or their info page.

Thanks.

That would be super!

This is a fabulous idea.

I know [livejournal.com profile] the_ascended uses the LJ tags feature for all his classes, which helps me a lot. We've already got so many associated communities -- if all the teachers could tag all their classes, that might be enough, possibly. Especially if there's a way that we could link the tags in the sidebar of the main [livejournal.com profile] fandomhigh page.

[identity profile] jerusalem-s.livejournal.com 2005-09-15 06:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately, tags refuse to work for me. Ever. On any lj account I've ever HAD.

... which is why they're all in my memories and on my info page.

With all the traffic on fandomhigh, I wouldn't mind a separate community for classes. I also don't want to be in charge of creating it, thankyoueverso, although I'd be willing to keep up with it as maintainer.

I'm still having enough trouble trying to get the damn townies to cooperate without maintainer status.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/sydney_bristow_/ 2005-09-15 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
the tags don't work for me either on any of my seven characters

[identity profile] actingltcrumpet.livejournal.com 2005-09-15 06:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, damn, I didn't realize that. In that case, hmm.

I just worry that the more communities we have, the more work it is for the maintainers.

[identity profile] jerusalem-s.livejournal.com 2005-09-15 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Maintaining isn't a big deal, really. I'm more or less obsessive/compulsive and a pushy bastard by nature... but while adding one more community to keep an eye on and keep organized is no big deal... I don't think I have it in me to actually go out and create one.

I'd be happy to volunteer to create and maintain a fandom_classes community. It would make things a lot damn easier for keeping up with schooolwork.

I just don't want to step on any toes.

God, yes, that's a brilliant idea. It means I could actually find the classes I'm taking!

Hm. I was thinking the tags thing, too. I think the maintainer of the comm has to enable it in the journal prefs. I submit [livejournal.com profile] accio_au as a fairly well used example of tags in a comm. Doing it by character, or class, etc. So far, I've been putting my classes into my memories and then just checking the teachers' journals.

There are a few things I think could help facilitate this comm's ease-of-use. For example, the OOC... when people aren't able to play, or have some general "I'm leaving for two hours" kind of thing, I think it would be smartest just to post that to their journal, rather than to the OOC. And when people have a dorms thread, not cross-posting it to their journal would help clear up the friends list/filters I check for Max.

To make things easier on myself, I usually just drop links into a comment in my own Max journal. It's a handy lil' storage bin that doesn't botch up everyone else's flists.

So... wait, we're moving the actual on-topic stuff to yet another community?

I'm not a fan of that just on principle. I'd rather people refrained frrom posting in fandomhigh unless it really is a)public and b)school-relevant to everyone.

Less crossposting would also help.

I see what you're saying. The thing is, though, the problem isn't the classes; it's the other stuff. If we used our personal journals and the dorms and townies communities properly and quit crossposting, the volume in this main community would drop considerably. And, frankly, I think it's ridiculous to bump the classes -- which are for everyone -- in place of posts geared for a small group of posters.

(I know I'm swimming upstream here, but this really is a very strong opinion.)

If the problem is that people can't find their classes, one solution that would not make me insane would be having one post per day that existed just to link all of the classes that were happening that day.

[identity profile] rushmore-yankee.livejournal.com 2005-09-15 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I am very much picking up what you're putting down. And agree. Like I've been saying: there should be a primer of some kind. Like, a ...(jesus, I can't believe I'm saying this) workflow chart or something.

Plus, I'd really just like to play out of my filters and friendslist, rather than abandon the classes-at-fandom-high thing.

I completely see what you're saying.

The trouble is that some of the professors keep disappearing or are days behind... and it's just gotten screamingly messy. I have a student character who keeps looking for classes that just aren't there.

Someone would have to make and maintain the post, nag and chivvy the professors to remember to post there....

*shrugs* There's no solution that will make everyone happy, frankly.

Right now, I can't even get the townies in order and because there's no requirements to apply or anything some have come and gone without leaving more than a single post in their wake and it's irritating as all get out.

Once this gets set up, this will alleviate a *LOT* of the problems.

Class Schedule and Basic Syllabi will be available. Day-to-day assignments... I'm still working out an easy-to-use system for, because I don't want to be hassled with making a change ehttp://www.fandomhigh.com

Thanks for all of your work on that site, seriously.

Are you thinking about making an FAQ-y thing? Because it almost sounds like we're talking about a couple of related-but-distinct problems: First, the game has gotten too big for people to easily find classes or other specific posts, and second, no one's really sure what should be in a private journal vs. what should be in fandomhigh_dorms vs. what should be in the main community, which leads to both frustration and crossposting. I think the site could help the first problem, but NSM the second.

I definitely think we need to do something to organize the classes better... My new student isn't even 100% sure what classes she's enrolled in.

Perhaps if the teachers posted the actual classes in their character journals and linked to them... then each student could create a filter with only the profs they're taking classes with?

[identity profile] suzotchka.livejournal.com 2005-09-16 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
That sounds like the easiest solution to me - simple, direct, and doesn't require massive reorganisation on the part of everyone. Just the teachers. Of which I (R.) will soon be one, so this isn't "let's make more work for someone else! Heh heh heh!"
