*coughs* Uh, I have a little request...

I have no authority here, I'm just trying to save my sanity...

For the people doing big plots with a very specific number of people? Could you guys maybe watch how many new posts you're spawning off? It gets hard for those of us who aren't able to check the board frequently to catch up, especially when a third of the posts are for one plot by the same six or seven people.

See the poker game for an example of how they're keeping a thread neat and tidy and saving our sanity...

So not trying to pick on or single anyone out. But my brain likes organization, and it's having trouble with the clutter.

Second the motion. Please, dear god, cut the number of posts you're making. PLEASE. Don't make us start writing rules to control this.

There's always only allowing teachers and staff to be able to post in the main comm to fall back on, if it keeps it up at this level.

[identity profile] sharon-valerii.livejournal.com 2005-09-17 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
In all honesty, I'd originally thought that was true of the fh comm. Not the others, but, er, I was surprised in the beginning to see posts from students.

Dear Principal Connor:

Have you an AIM where I can reach you to ask a few questions about rules and regulations and perhaps I could make a general cross-post tomorrow to cover several things?

I have Y!M at pigwidgeon_the_unholy that's up right now.

[identity profile] jerusalem-s.livejournal.com 2005-09-17 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
My frickin' Y!M won't connect. *kicks it hard*

[identity profile] principalconnor.livejournal.com 2005-09-17 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
*pokes it with a banana pointed stick*

[identity profile] principalconnor.livejournal.com 2005-09-17 05:40 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, yes, I noticed the dorms today. (Well, in the last hour or so as I was catching up.) And I know exactly what you mean about new posts springing up when they should have simply been comments in another thread.

[identity profile] aka-vala.livejournal.com 2005-09-17 05:59 am (UTC)(link)
As one of the ones involved in many of the messes tonight, I have to point out that, after a while, the threaded comments in a single post get entirely too much to follow.

I'm one who'd definitely vote for having (and skipping at will) *more* top level posts and less chasing down 36th-level comments in a single post.

[identity profile] aka-vala.livejournal.com 2005-09-17 06:19 am (UTC)(link)
I'm having to do that anyway, regardless. Besides, "skipping" takes, what? 10 seconds? *is confused*

[identity profile] marieann-d.livejournal.com 2005-09-17 07:10 am (UTC)(link)
I was involved, peripherally, in the madness of tonight (well, I was involved earlier, not tonight, been gone since 3:30 CDT) and I would just like to agree with Vala's mun about top level posts. I skim everything anyway, and skipping doesn't take that long, even on dial-up. (You just gotta go with a quick-loading layout. ^_^) There've been days here where about 95% of the posts don't apply to me, so I skim, but I'd rather be able to see where Teh Funny is going on and be able to either read it or skip it, without having to dig through 80 comment pages and threaded madness.

Also, friends filters? An RP'ers bestest friend in the WHOLE WIDE WORLD. I have a "regulars" group, a group with just the comms, townies, etc. It really helps you skim. :)

Just my $.02.

[identity profile] sharon-valerii.livejournal.com 2005-09-17 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed.

Sheesh. It's enough to make me reconsider being in fh, considering how little time I have to do other things. I'm wading through stuff that takes me all night to read (I pity Barbossa).

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2005-09-17 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure that me and some of mine are reponsible for brain-breaking. Sorry about that.

We'll work on it.

[identity profile] 2ls-in-oneill.livejournal.com 2005-09-17 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
*Apologizes too*

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2005-09-17 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
Thirded (or fourthed, or fifthed, or something), please. I only have a couple of hours on weeknights to spare, and f I have to follow a plot all over the place I'd almost rather not bother, which is a shame. I end up missing out on a lot of the fun.

[identity profile] sharon-valerii.livejournal.com 2005-09-17 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
*runs off to hide in Anders' room from teh crazy*

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2005-09-17 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
Sure, why not, there's always room for more gossip about the second floor.

[identity profile] sharon-valerii.livejournal.com 2005-09-17 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
It's not like she hasn't stayed over before.

[identity profile] auroryborealis.livejournal.com 2005-09-17 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. And on a related note, could the crossposting be minimized also? Because I'm pretty sure everyone has pretty much everyone friended, so it's really only necessary to post it once.

At least, I've noticed a fair number of repeat posts on my flist.

The crossposting is what's driving me nuts. I really don't see the point of it.

[identity profile] aka-vala.livejournal.com 2005-09-17 06:03 am (UTC)(link)
The crossposting is a pain, but since (in order to keep sanity) I'm reading pretty much *only* the community posts, I'd rather cut the private ones. (Then again, I've filtered 80% or more of all private journals out of my reading with already anyway.)

It's *so* much easier to try to track the comms than to try to follow people's individual journals.

[identity profile] not-an-ex-demon.livejournal.com 2005-09-17 06:53 am (UTC)(link)
1. i concur with aka_vala. i never get a chance to read any of the private journals... i actually really appreciate the crossposting between private and community journals at the very least. a potential problem with that is players might comment in one post and not the other and it's sort of like the left hand not talking to the right... or so i would imagine.

2. as long as we're all on soapboxes here, i wanted to mention that i also really really *really* appreciate the hyperlinks in posts so that when someone mentions an event, i can easily click and read what it's referring to and not have to go mad searching for it through several community and private journals.

[identity profile] prisoner-rover.livejournal.com 2005-09-17 12:07 pm (UTC)(link)
*rover does wonder how much is missed by not reading the private journals.*

*while he would agree that it saves time to not read them, if people are going to move from the comm to their private journals to help clear out the clutter problem, it defeats the purpose of not reading private journals.*

*agrees with poster up somewhere earlier that filters are an RPer's best friend.*

*although filters also run the risk of missing some good RP opportunity in private journals*

*rover realizes there is no easy solution*

*rover also does try to post links back to other actions if he moves a post from one place to the next.*

*he also uses reallife email quite a bit to call attention to some things that need attention by another player*

*rover goes off in search of coffee as he's rambling*

*...even for a ball*

*...dashingly handsome though he is.*

[identity profile] marsheadtilt.livejournal.com 2005-09-17 01:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with you on the crossposting.

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2005-09-17 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
Apologies from me, too. Some stuff was planned, some stuff went awry. It won't happen again.

[identity profile] sogothcally.livejournal.com 2005-09-17 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
Please folks, don't be taking these nice people's requests as "ARR! No More Fun For You!"

I personally agree that we could tighten up some of the mass chaos of the bigger threads. While the slumber party was a bit anarchic, it atleast had the benefit of being all in one place (though I do understand that caused a few browser issues with some people).

So, yes. Just keep these ideas in mind for the future, please?

I love fandom high very dearly and want everyone to be able to enjoy it equally.

[identity profile] 2ls-in-oneill.livejournal.com 2005-09-17 06:33 am (UTC)(link)
As the instigator in two of the posts (With over 600 comments and growing) I apologize, we tried to keep it in order but even with only six people we ended up sprawling quiet a bit. I apologize and from now on I'll find a way to organize them a bit more.

And trust me I know this isn't meant to be mean in anyway, I spend on average somewhere between five and six hours a night I can't afford wadeing through all the posts. So I understand where you're coming from.
