The LJ Schools Listing

It has to come down. At the very least, we need to remove the link to the site, but in all fairness, we need to take it down. Here's why:

FandomHigh.com is currently enjoying free hosting courtesy of the company that I work for. It's a sweet deal in the sense that I don't have to pay for anything and I have access to the tools to fix it if something goes wrong.

However, by representing ourselves as a real school in the Livejournal Schools Directory, we are committing fraud. We are representing ourselves as a real school when we are not. Now, the folks at LJ may have a sense of humor about this, but we can't assume that. Especially if they have a legal department, which they do.

If LJ discovers that Fandom High is not real, or they decide to reverse their decision, the best-case scenario is that the listing is removed. The worst-case scenario is that they shut down the comms associated and then they talk to my webhost and get the site shut down for association with the fraudulent listing. The site clearly labels itself as a parody. The listing does not.

If the site is shut down for fraud (legal) reasons, not only will our site go down, but I will be fired. On the spot.

We're already on semi-shaky ground with the whole gray area of fanfiction. The parody label on the site should protect us, but the listing is a step over the line. It's cool, but it's putting my livelihood in danger. So I have to ask that the folks that asked to have it put up please make an effort to have it taken down.

Thank you.

If it makes you feel better, I'm fairly certain that LJ is not taking the school thing entirely seriously - both Hogwarts and Alexandria High (a fictional school for a Final Fantasy game) are also listed in the school directory.

Also Xavier's and Neptune. Taking down my link from my characters pages to FH.com anyhows. *nods* Losing job = bad.

And Unseen University, from Discworld.

That may be so, but, when you get right down to it, what other people are or are not getting away with is not the issue. The person who has not only provided the webspace, but done majority of the coding and content, is asking that an effort be made to remove Fandom High from the school directory. The reasons for the request don't matter, and, while I'm sure it wasn't your intention, pointing out that "We're not the only ones!" trivializes that request.

We've been done a favor, and, as such, we've also an obligation to conceed the point in this regard. I'm not trying to pick fights, so please don't take it that way. And, I'm sorry for reposting this twice. I need to learn English.

I second what DEATH said. I was going to actually say that myself, but was beaten to it by someone who probably phrased it more eloquently. :)

I removed the school listing from Chloe's interview right after I made my comment. I was just trying to reassure that we're not the only game who's infiltrated the LJ school directory. Sorry.

I understand that. I removed the school listing from Chloe's interview right after I made my comment. I was just trying to reassure that we're not the only game who's infiltrated the LJ school directory. Sorry.

But, yes we don't want to lose space or jobs so we go with what's appropriate.

D'you want us to take the school of the infopage, or wait till the listing is taken down?

So we need to remove FH from the school list? Or remove the website associated?

We most emphatically do not want you losing your job.

Is there someone else here who can provide webspace?

How much space is needed and how heavy is the traffic?

If necessary, I'll be willing to pony up the space. I'm a web developer and have my own web space anyhow.

[Duh -- Mun, not Willow]
