Uncollapsing LiveJournal Comments in Firefox

I'm sure most of you are aware of how with LiveJournal's code, any time a post receives more than 50 comments, the comment threads become collapsed, making it impossible to read everything without clicking on the various threads and having to go back and forth. I'm willing to bet you're also aware that many of the posts in our game receive upwards of 100 comments on a slow night. *g*

Well, it turns out that someone else has gotten as fed up with the back and forth as we all have, and came up with a way to unfold LiveJournal comments in the same post using a Firefox extension. Ya rly!

The first step is to install a Firefox extension called Greasemonkey. As per the description, Greasemonkey "allows you to customize the way a webpage displays using small bits of JavaScript." Follow the link, click Install Now, and restart Firefox.

Once you've restarted Firefox, click here. Don't right click and save, just follow the link. This will take you to a Javascript file, which Greasemonkey will recognize as one it can install. You should get a yellow bar at the top of the screen, along with a button to install the script. Once you've done this, you're good to go. You don't even have to restart Firefox!

So what happens? Now, when you load LiveJournal pages, they'll look like this:

See the "Unfold" link between the subject of the comment and the journal name? When you click on that link, it loads within the same page, much in the same way that clicking to respond to a comment opens within the same page, and it unfolds all of the comments like this:

As you can see, I unfolded the comments above Sam's as well, to give you an idea of how it ends up looking. You can unfold every thread in a post, and then read the whole thing from top to bottom. I'm not sure how many comments a page will handle before it breaks - I've used it on 200 and 300-comment posts today, but I make no guarantee that something with 1000+ comments won't make Firefox go kablooey.

As I said, this works specifically with Firefox, on both Macs and PCs. If you reload the page, the comments will collapse again, but I've found it to be really helpful when you're coming into a post late, and want to catch up with what's already been done. Or, when you want to view all the dirty icons at Caritas in one long shot. *g*
