Spotlight on Fandoms: Monsters, Inc.
Once upon a time, Pixar and Disney had a baby. That baby was Toy Story and it was glorious. Jump ahead about a decade and they were still churning out shiny movies. One of those movies was Monsters, Inc. (said aloud "Monsters Incorporated").
Monstropolis
Welcome to Monstropolis, a city very much like those found in the United States, but with one key difference. There are no humans in Monstropolis, only monsters of all shapes and sizes. Monsters go about their business as butchers, bakers, candlestick makers, etc. Some monsters work for scaring companies such as the titled Monsters, Inc. There are administrators, janitors, scare assistants and the scarers themselves.
Wait, wait, wait, where are the humans?
The humans are in the human world. There are no humans in the monster world. In fact, monsters are pretty much convinced that humans are toxic to all monsters and that they have laser beam eyes and mind powers and eat wee monsters for dinner. There are a lot of urban legends about humans, obviously, but no one has really met one up close before. The CDA (Child Detection Agency) makes sure that nothing and no one from the human world comes through and infects the monster world.
Okay. So what are these scarers?
Power in the monster world does not come from electricity as it does in our world. It comes from a power source called 'scream', the screams of human children converted into energy that can be used to power everything from blenders to buildings. The scream is harvested from the human world. Scarers go through closet doors that are hooked up to a machine, scare the kids in there and the kids' scream is then (somehow) captured in canisters and carted away to be used as power.
Background over, give me the plot
James P. Sullivan is the top scarer at Monsters, Inc. Problem is one day he checks out a suspect door left behind on the scare floor and finds that a weetiny human child with pigtails has followed him through. When he finds he can't return her to her room (after lots of flailing and screaming on his part), Sulley takes off to find his pal Mike Wazowski to get help with this little problem. Mike just wants to get rid of the kid, but after escaping the Child Detection Agency (Sulley and Mike don't want their careers to be ruined by the child's presence) Sulley realizes that hey, humans aren't toxic and the kid (he names her Boo) is actually kind of adorable.
They set out to get her back to her door (kept in a huuuge warehouse filled with doors that Monsters, Inc. uses to access the human world). Problem. Turns out that Sulley's main competition, Randall Boggs, actually has nefarious plans for the little tyke in perfecting his scream extractor to deal with the current scream shortage in Monstropolis.
Not to spoil the good parts (and the twists), but wackiness ensues and they live happily ever after. Kinda.
The Characters
James P. Sullivan (John Goodman) - similar to what he's like at FH, only bigger, more confident and way better at scaring. He's a nice guy, good at what he does and, oh yeah, he's a big, blue, furry monster who can switch from cheerful happy guy to snarling, scary beast on cue.
Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal) - Mike has been best friends with Sulley since they were tiny monsters. He's a round, green monster with one eye and a big mouth. He's anti-human, like most monsters are, and occasionally gets a little sick of being the sidekick that Sulley doesn't listen to. He's a smooth talker, often gets into trouble and is terrible at completing his paperwork as Sulley's scare assistant. He's dating Celia.
Randall Boggs (Steve Buscemi) - a conniving, sneaky, snake-like monster who can camouflage himself. He's Sulley's main competition, is a downright bastard and up to no good. He won't hesitate to kill if need be to get his job done.
Henry J. Waternoose (James Coburn) - the head honcho at Monsters, Inc. Mr Waternoose is a giant spider monster and let's hope he never visits Fandom High because he might give Ron a heart attack. He's seen as a strong leader and spokesmonster for the company which has been in his family for generations. He's Sulley's mentor and is weighed down with the worries of the scream shortage.
Celia (Jennifer Tilly) - Celia is the receptionist at Monsters, Inc. and is a slender monster with snakes as her hair. She's very much smitten with Mike and is pretty much clueless as to what's going on, much to her frustration.
Roz (Bob Peterson) - Roz is a creepy, slug-like female monster who's head of the office at Monsters, Inc. She's watching you. Aaaaalways watching. Creepy as hell, but hysterical.
Boo (Mary Gibbs) - possibly the cutest tiny kid in existence. She seems to take everything in her stride and takes an instant liking to Sulley. She calls him "Kitty" and pretty much wreaks havoc on the monster world without even realizing it.
Where Can I Watch It?
You can hire Monsters, Inc. in the Children or Family section of pretty much every video store in the Western world. You can buy it anywhere that sells DVDs of the non-adult variety. Although if you find it in a store that specializes in the adult variety, let me know. I'm curious.
Why Should I Watch?
The animation is fantastic (Pixar, it's a given), the plot is fun and twisty, the characters are very loveable and it's a good movie in general. It appeals to kids and adults. Finally, KITTY.
