Feel like telling the world about your canon? Spotlight on Fandoms is the perfect way to get people sucked in to the things you love!

You can read about it all and see a list of previous Spotlights here.

This week the RNG has pulled up Princess of Thieves and Eureka SeveN! Can you guys please let me know if you're good to do your spotlight this week? If anyone wants to volunteer as well, the first two can do theirs! Just comment below.

The list of volunteers yet to go is behind the cut.

I have no idea what my availability is this weekend so I'M JUST GOING TO POST THIS NOW.

Okay. So all I ever say is that there is vampire Elvis in these books, and that the show has sexy vampires.

And really, that could be this whole post. But I'll say a little more. First of all, you should know that there are now ten Southern Vampire Mysteries books, and we're going into our third season of True Blood.

So, what's the premise? )

And who are the characters? )

Vampire Elvis aside, why should I read/watch? -- SOME OF THIS IS NWS! )

Comments? Questions? Appreciations of Eric's hotness?

As I have a new character to be able to do a new spotlight on fandoms on, I'm going to be doing The Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers.

The Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers was a first in many aspects, one if it was the first cartoon to be made using anime technology outside of Japan and also it was the first cartoon of its time to be made without a pre existing supporting toy line to drive the series.

What is the Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers? )

First, as you all know I'm a big fan of visual aids, have a disgustingly catchy fanvid to bring you into my parlour.

Anyway. Let's start at the beginning...

In Ye Olde Times (also known as the Nineties), there was a little gaming studio that could called Naughty Dog. (Well, really, they kicked off in the Year of Len's Birth, 1986, but let's not quibble about details) They got their big break through a 3D action-platformer called Crash Bandicoot after a few bad go 'rounds with other franchises. As it turned out, 3D action-platformers did good, the company was bought by Sony, and they were sicced on the task of making another one under the new imprint.

That was the start of the Jak & Daxter series.

We'll start you off with some character descriptions, run you through the three main storyline games, and touch briefly on all of the surrounding games, woo!

Cut for spoilers for Jak 1, 2 and 3, and vague spoilers for Daxter, Jak X and Jak & Daxter: The Lost Frontier. Also: Len being ramblypants. )

Questions, comments etc?

Hello helloooo. I've taken over Spotlight on Fandoms from Erin and this post is mostly stolen from her!

Look at your DVD collection. Now back to me. Now back to your comics collection. Now back to me. How many of those DVDs, comics and obsessions with fandoms you'd never even heard of a few years ago are because of this game? Unless you're new, I'm betting more than a few.

Fandom Spotlight is a chance to give your fandom a little more exposure and to sucker some more people into watching/seeing/hearing/reading it. This is all about sharing the awesome and finding new shiny things to get into.

Here's how it normally works:

Each fortnight, players from two fandoms pimp out their fandom to the whole game. You can talk about whatever you'd like: the plot, your character(s), other characters you'd like to see in game, the creators, history, future speculation and why people should watch. It can be as short or as long as you'd like. These will be posted some time over the next two weeks (whenever you get it done), giving people a chance to squee, boggle, or ask lots of questions.

One of the only provisos is that any major spoilers that haven't made it into the game:
1) Go behind a cut
2) Be clearly labeled as such
If in doubt, cut and warn please!

What do I need to do? )

So here's a list of fandoms that are already done:
Already Done )

Here's the list of current volunteers still yet to go:
To Do )

If you're not on the To Do list and you're supposed to be or want to be, please let me know in the OCD below.

If you're on the Done list but you want to go back into the To Do list, please check with your canonmates and then let me know.

If there's something else gone awry, please let me know!

To kick us off, rather than RNGing, for the next month I'm going to ask for any volunteers who really want to pimp their canon and do their spotlight. If you want to do it, please ping into the OCD below for the time you want! Doesn't matter if there's more than 2 fandoms going, let's get some enthusiasm going!

Mulan is the story of a young girl who takes her ailing father's place in the ancient Chinese Imperial Army by posing as a male. It's also the story of a girl trying to fit in and wishing she could be herself even if that could mean disappointing her parents. She wants nothing more than to make her family proud. Becoming a war hero can't hurt. It's based on a Chinese legend about a possibly real life female war hero told for thousands of years.

The entire premise of Joan of Arcadia is summed up in the Joan Osborne song "One of Us". Which also happens to be the show's theme song. Funny how that works. But, yes. The show revolves around a teenage girl named Joan who lives in Arcadia, Maryland, and begins getting visits from God who tells her to perform various tasks. He tells her that He is making good on her promise to do anything He wanted if her brother, Kevin, survived the car accident that made him a paraplegic.

There are vague spoilers for the entire series under the cut.

Lalala, you've seen this post before, but there's new info in here so please do read it through!

Okay, so, how many of y'all got into a fandom because of this game? Hands up, now. Don't any of you be shy. *raises both hands and jumps around and points at Robin, specifically* I would never have gotten into HIMYM if not for [info]suit_of_awesome, and her awesomeness.

Fandom Spotlight, though, is a chance to get even more exposure for your fandom! Given how many fandoms are represented in game, there's a good chance that at least half the people playing aren't familiar with yours. But the longer people play, the more that changes.

You innocently start playing with someone from a fandom you don't know and next thing you know you're infected intrigued. Unless you can get your hands on the source material, AND find time to devour it obsessively read/watch/play it, you'll only ever have that tiny taste. Coming from the other side, it can be hard when only a handful of people in the game know your canon. If you want to do plot with those who don't, there can be a heck of a lot of infodumping, and it means you have the constant, naggging knowledge that there are people in the world who don't know how AWESOME your fandom is!

But that's okay, 'cause there's Fandom Spotlight.

Each week, one or two players (or set of players) will get to pimp their fandom to the whole game. You can talk about any aspect you like: plot, your character, other characters you'd like to see in the game, the creators, history, future speculations. It can be as long as you like, from endless saga to brief overview.

These will be posted every other Sunday, giving people a chance to squee, boggle, or ask lots of questions. One of the only provisos is that any major spoilers that haven't made it into the game: 1) Go behind a cut and 2) Be clearly labeled as such. If in doubt, cut and warn.

I’m late. My first ‘Spotlight’ and I’m late! So sorry!

Okay, uhm, so the Powerpuff Girls Z (Demashita! Powerpuff Girls Z) is a Japanese anime remake/homage to the American show, The Powerpuff Girls.

The Powerpuff Girls was an original Cartoon Network series that began airing in 1998. It was about three 5-year-old girls created by a scientist who was trying to create the 'perfect little girl' out of "sugar, spice, and everything nice." Unfortunately (for the bad guys) he accidentally spilled some Chemical X into the mixture and the three sisters were "born" with superpowers. They live in the City of Townsville, which happens to be next to Monster Island, where the giant invading monsters come from. There are also a few resident monsters in town, like Mojo Jojo – a former lab monkey turned criminal super genius thanks to a Chemical X accident of his own, and Fuzzy Lumpkins, a pink crazy banjo-playing hermit, as well as non-monsters that just commit crimes and make it hard for the idiot Mayor to keep being re-elected.

The show was really cool, don’t let anyone tell you different. This is probably why they decided to re-make it into an anime.

The Powerpuff Girls Z is an alternate reality from the original Powerpuff Girls. Literally. There is an episode where the Z-girls' time machine (Yes, a time machine. There's plot for it, don't worry!) goes wonky and they end up in an alternate dimension and we watch as the original Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup fly past and fight an invading monster. They even comment on it. :)

Japan kicks it up a notch! )

Hello hello!

First of all, an announcement! Just to clarify, spotlights can now be written by anyone, provided that the active members of the fandom agree! (ie, I could totes hit up [livejournal.com profile] youcantfollow for a True Blood assist, since I know she watches, but [livejournal.com profile] lickyourmind would have to agree too!) If you would like to help with a spotlight, please contact the members of said fandom via email to offer your services!

That being said, we have Vampire Academy, Rogue Angel Black Jewels Trilogy, and Dogma this time around! Remember, spotlights for this round should be posted by Sunday, December 6th, and can be posted at any time!

Let me know if you can go, or if you have questions!

What It's All About

Chuck is a spy dramedy created by Chris Fedak and Josh Schwartz, the latter whom some of you may know as the creator of The OC and Gossip Girl. It's about a seemingly normal, yet socially awkward nerd who one day downloads a super computer full of government secrets into his brain. The premise sounds super lame, we know, but it's really quite delightful and well written.

Chuck must deal with his new life as a spy, maintain his day job at the Buy More, and deal with his family and friends as well as his complicated love life. You can expect lots of spy intrigue, ridiculous, yet awesome adventures, cool special effects, lots of laughs, and plenty of pretty. Basically, it fits right into Fandom.

Hello hello!

So, after a couple weeks of sporadic posting (partially on my end, here -- note how this is on a Monday, omg), I consulted with the mighty admins, and there's goin to be a couple changes to the spotlight on fandoms MO.

First and foremost, there will be three fandoms chosen every two weeks, rather than two once a week. As a fandom drawn for spotlighting, you'll be able to post anytime during those two weeks -- which affords both myself and you guys a little leeway.

Secondly, I'll email you if I don't hear whether you can do it or not within a day or so, just to make sure, since I know not everyone is crazy and tacks the OOC comm like I do. :D

Thirdly, I've already RNG'd for the fandoms we'll hear from on Sunday, November 22 -- Chuck, Powerpuff Girls Z, and Wicked/Son of a Witch. Let me know ASAP if you can go during this time!

Any questions, otherwise?

Hello! I know, I don't look like Erin but I'm filling in for her while she flaunts around Chicago. So, for next week, the almighty RNG has selected: The OC and Xena: Warrior Princess! When This Boy Meets World

Cory: You are going to learn something from life every day. And make mistakes. And you'll make good friends and Mr. Feeny will probably teach you every grade you're ever in. And maybe someday you'll fall in love with a woman as wonderful as Topanga. How would you like that?
Joshua: Yeah.
Cory: And be lucky enough to make a good friend as Shawn. How'd you like that?
Joshua: Good.
Cory: And when you're not a little boy anymore, when the world has taught you how to be a man... Then you'll still make mistakes. But your family, and all those good friends you've made along the way, will help you. And even though you'll think the world has gone out of it's way to teach you all the tough lessons, you'll realize that it's the same world that's given you your family and those friends, you you'll come to believe that no matter what happens, somehow the world will protect you, too. "Boy Meets World." Now I get it.

Wildfire was a television series co-created by Michael Piller, best known for his work with Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and The Dead Zone. The show revolved around Kris Furillo, who was trying to start over after serving time in a juvenile detention facility. While she was incarcerated at Camp LaGrange, Kris bonded with a retired racehorse named Wildfire who was being re-trained as a police horse.

A horse trainer for Raintree Farms, Pablo Betart, noticed how well Kris worked with the horses when he volunteered at Camp LaGrange. When Kris came up for her parole and her family didn't come through for her, Pablo arranged for Kris to work at Raintree in exchange for room and board. His employer, single mom Jean Ritter, was awfully nervous about having this troubled young girl staying in a trailer not far from her teenage sons in the main house. At the same time, Jean and Pablo were struggling to save Raintree from financial ruin after being forced to sell their best horses just to stay afloat.

But when Wildfire's new owners gave up on him and tried to unload him, Kris threw away her second chance by stealing Wildfire from a horse auction and racing off into the night. She and Wildfire were caught the next day, but not before a camera crew broadcasting live from a helicopter made them into stars. Jean and her father are impressed with Wildfire's speed and agility when he has something to run for. They buy Wildfire, who quickly becomes a top racehorse with Kris as his jockey.

But, of course, there's a lot more drama, both on and off the track. And I've tried to write this without including too many spoilers, if you feel inclined to check the show out for yourself.

The Keeper Chronicles by Tanya Huff

In a world much like ours (except all Canadian and stuff) bad events make holes in the fabric of reality.  Typically, the wholes close up on their own without any kind of bother.  But sometimes, the hole refuses to close (sometimes helped along by Hell) and then more of an interference is needed.  And that's when the Keepers step in.

Hi there!

I'm supposed to tell you about Six Feet Under, which was a drama that aired on HBO for five seasons between 2001 and 2005. It was about the Fisher family of Los Angeles and their loved ones. They own a funeral home and a lot of crazy shit happens to them.

Too short?

All right. I come bearing visual aides.

This is the main cast. )

And of course you get some videos: )

Why you should watch: The acting is completely amazing, even when the plotlines teeter on soapiness. They got a very, very good cast, and used it well. The writing is, mostly, excellent -- it sells you on the plausibility of the situations even when, well, see above about soapiness. It's HBO, so there's a lot of swearing and some nice, hot, sex scenes. The hallucinations are hard to describe, but they add an extra layer of texture to the show -- you know what's going on inside the characters' heads.

Also, the deaths at the start of each episode tend to be these insane comic (and occasionally tragic) set pieces; it's worth watching just for those.

Where to Watch: It's available on DVD, and Amazon has specials on the 5-season boxed set pretty often. It also turns up on Bravo, in edited form, once in a blue moon.

For this week's spotlight, we're going back to the year was 1985. Ronald Reagan was president and I knew all the words to "Like A Virgin" without really understanding why my mother cringed when I sang along with Madonna. That was also the year that Thundercats debuted on television. I had a daily afternoon ritual of watching my favorite shows, He-man, She-ra, and Thundercats, with Silverhawks getting added to the line-up a year later. I probably wasn't alone either, judging by how many Thundercats fans I've found on the Internet.
