Spotlight on Fandoms: Power Rangers Zeo
Okay, so remember Mighty Morphin Power Rangers? Power Rangers Zeo is the next installment, following the third season of MMPR.
The series is still taking place in Angel Grove, California. That's one thing that hasn't changed. What's changed? Some of the Rangers have been replaced, a new villain shows up and a sixth Ranger is added to the mix.
The Power Rangers:
Tommy Oliver: Played by Jason David Frank. Tommy continues to lead the team as they transition to Zeo Rangers. He becomes the Red Ranger. Tommy spends part of the series crushing on Kat, after receiving the infamous break-up letter from Kim. *sniffles* He finds out he has a brother and goes on a quest to uncover his Native American background.
Adam Park: Played by Johnny Yong Bosch. Taking on the role of the Green Zeo Ranger, Adam took his ranger duties seriously. He became part of the Angel Grove baseball team and we find out that he's musically inclined -- he had an affinity for the piano.
Rocky DeSantos: Played by Steven Cardenas. Rocky's still his silly self, only this time he's in blue. When Jason shows up, Rocky feels like an outcast, what with everyone paying attention to the original red.
Billy Cranston: Played by David Yost. In the previous series, Billy was the Blue Ranger. He selflessly hands over his (originally Aisha's) zeo crystal to Tommy, taking a backseat to ranger-ing. Billy spends the series building and fixing weapons, arsenal and all kind of items the Rangers use in the fight against the Machine Empire.
Katherine Hillard: Played by Catherine Sutherland. Her Ranger color stays the same in this series, as she takes on the role of Zeo Ranger Pink. She spends the series with a crush on Tommy, teaching and putting together ballet performances and getting into all kinds of trouble. Fun times.
Tanya Sloan: Played by Nakia Burrise. During the quest for the Zeo Crystal, Aisha came across Tanya in Africa. Deciding to stay behind, Aisha sent Tanya back in her place. She received the zeo crystal from Billy, and became the Yellow Zeo Ranger. Tanya was a natural at baseball pitching. She and Adam had a bit of a romantic relationship through the series.
Jason Lee Scott: Played by Austin St. John. So, remember how Jason was chosen to represent Angel Grove at a Peace Conference in Switzerland and left the show? Well, he comes back half-way through the series. He takes on the role as sixth Ranger; the Gold Ranger to be exact.
Allies:
Zordon: An interdimensional being from the planet Eltar. He was trapped in a time warp during a final battle with Rita. Making his way to Earth, Zordon set up the Command Center on the outskirts of Angel Grove, to keep an eye on the goings-on in the galaxy. Alerted of Rita's freedom, Zordon established the team of Power Rangers to protect the Earth from ultimate destruction. And yes, he is a floating head in a tube... which is attached to a body, displayed in Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers the Movie. Apparently, Zordon's life is only sustainable if he's kept in that tube. Or so say the writers.
Alpha 5: Alpha is a robot and Zordon's trusty assistant. He helped to create the Command Center as an operations base for the Power Rangers. This is where the Rangers received their powers and are alerted to new threats and allies, through the viewing globe. Alpha is constantly worrying about the Rangers, his signature phrase being 'Ayi-yi-yi'. Though there were a few Alpha's during the Power Rangers fandom, Alpha 5 is the 'original' in terms of MMPR.
Bulk and Skull: Yes, they are still hanging around. They still want to find out the identities of the Power Rangers. We find out that Skull is an amazing piano player and everyone was surprised by that. Adam was the one who found out and supported Skull the whole way, encouraging him to participate in the music class' concert.
Villains:
King Mondo - Leader of the Machine Empire. The new villains come to town and they're hell bent on destroying earth. He's married to Queen Machina and has two sons -- Sprocket and Gasket.
Gasket is involved in a relationship with Archerina, who's wicked with a bow. They can make any evil being fall in love with her and do whatever she asks of them. Also, she has a vendetta against Katherine.
They're evil to boot and want nothing more than to destroy Earth and the Power Rangers. No surprise there. The henchmen they employ are called cogs. Mechanical robots that appear in waves.
Zedd and Rita are around for a bit, driven away by the Machine Empire. Yeah, sucks for them. Rito and Goldar spend part of the series serving Bulk and Skull, due to their bought of amnesia. It's pretty amusing, actually.
Extra Stuff:
Power Rangers Zeo - PR Central Database entry, if you want more info on this series.
PR Montage (MMPR, Zeo & Turbo) - The video is done to Devo’s Are You Ready. And I love that song! It's a pretty good video, I enjoyed it.
I do believe that's it! Questions, comments, spandex?

Nothing against Catherine Sutherland; I just couldn't respect a girl who was supposed to kick ass and spent 98% of every fight screaming for Tommy.
. . . Jen in my head froths at that, I'll have you know.

With good reason. *pats Jen*

And I kind of adore Billy hardcore. Periodically get tempted to app him.

Yes, Billy is WIN. Adam would've loved to have Billy here, oh yes. They would've made lots of science-y gadgets together.
