Spotlight on Fandoms - Galaxy Rangers
As I have a new character to be able to do a new spotlight on fandoms on, I'm going to be doing The Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers.
The Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers was a first in many aspects, one if it was the first cartoon to be made using anime technology outside of Japan and also it was the first cartoon of its time to be made without a pre existing supporting toy line to drive the series.
The Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers is a sci-fi animated western than ran between 1986-1989 and it chronicles the adventures of the Series 5 Galaxy Rangers led by Captain Zachery Foxx as they struggle against the Queen of the Crown.
Since the intro does a better job at describing the premise for the series than what I could, I'm just going to link it here and let it explain it.
Main Characters:
Captain Zachery Foxx (voiced by Jerry Orbach): Captain of the Series 5 Galaxy Rangers, is a very much by the book type leader. After the first encounter with the Queen of the Crown, in which his wife Aliza was captured and turned into a Slaver Lord, Foxx himself was seriously injured and his left side replaced with bionics. His Series 5 implant allows him to fire energy balls from his bionic arm and he is also able to get bursts of super strength.
Shane 'Goose' Gooseman (voiced by Doug Preis) A result of a failed military project designed to create the ultimate super soldier, Goose is the only Supertrooper remaining to be both sane and to also have compassion. As he was in the firing range at the time when a gas was injected into the barracks at Wolf Den by a civilian, Goose remained unaffected by the incident. In exchange for not being cyrogenically frozen, Goose agreed to enlist as a Galaxy Ranger and hunt down and bring in the regenade Supertroopers. Goose's Series 5 implant allows him to have greater control over his internal bio defenses and allow him to be able to adapt to his environmental surroundings more freely.
Niko (voiced by Laura Dean): Raised as an orphan on the planet Xanadu, Niko is a Psychic and an archeologist specializing in ancient alien cultures. Her Series 5 implant allows her powers to be amplified and controlled briefly by touching an object to have flashes of the past or future.
Walter 'Doc' Hartford (voiced by Hubert Kelly): Doc is a computer wizard and before joining the Galaxy Rangers was a medical researcher and computer psychoanalyst. His Series 5 implant allows him to access a series of programs through a computer diagnostics unit (CDU) that perform different functions.
Supporting Characters:
Commander Joseph Walsh: Head of BETA and former head of the Supertrooper program, Walsh is in charge of overseeing the day to day functions of BETA and is often in conflict with the Board of Leaders, mostly due to the fact that they think BETA spends too much money. It was revealed in the series that Walsh had put his own DNA into Goose's creation, even though it was forbidden for Supertroopers to have living donors and thus would have serious implications for both him and Goose should this revelation come to light. The only other people to know are Dr. Negata and Senator Wheiner, Wheiner only found out by accident and it is through a series of blackmail and threats that the two keep quiet about each other's secrets.
Ambassador Waldo Zeptic: Waldo is an Ambassador of good will from Andor and is the one who gave the plans for the hyperdrive unit to the World Federation of Earth in exchange for help. Waldo takes pride in his people's technical and artistic achievements, like most Andorians.
Ambassador Zozo: Zozo is a Kiwi and is a liaison officer assigned to the Galaxy Rangers. From a race of hard working farmers, even though he appears to be harmless, he is actually quite a fighter (as are a lot Kiwi). Zozo is often on the look out for new planets to introduce his Kiwi seedlings from the famed Kiwi Veggie Labs.
The Kiwi Kids: Sweetie, Little Joe and Bud - niece and nephews of Zozo, are often left at BETA to be baby-sat.
Ambassador Zizaw: Zozo's brother and father of the Kiwi kids, often leaves his kids at BETA to be looked after by their Uncle Zozo and his friends.
Zachery Foxx Jr. 'Little Zach': Captain Foxx's fourteen-year-old son, attends high school on Earth and when not at school, spends most of his time at BETA with Buzzwang.
Jessica Foxx: Captain Foxx's twelve-year-old daughter, studies at the Albert Einstein School for Gifted Youngsters on the Rosinante Space Colony.
Icarus and Winter: - Goose's dolphin friends who reside in the Longshot Bay Facilities, they are equipped with a special implant that allows them to communicate with Goose and often occompany the Galaxy Rangers when they are on water based missions.
Q-Ball: Head of Technical Support, Q-Ball is the mastermind inventor of the Series 5 implant, which is used by the Galaxy Rangers. He also designs the fleet of special equipment and vehicles and is constantly developing new machines and weapons.
Buzzwang: A robot, programmed by Q-Ball and is the most technically advanced form of artificial intelligence. As a Galaxy Ranger, he is used on special assignments where conditions are unsafe for human life.
Dr. Owen Negata: Tactical Commander for the World Federation Board of Leaders, worked on the Supertrooper program with Commander Walsh. Suffered inoperable damage after an attack by the Supertroopers, who went rogue, during their escape. Was preserved by keeping his brain in a life-suppord machine, thus enabling his mind to live for an indefinite period.
Senator Eric Wheiner: A politician from Earth, was the one who injected the gas into the Supertrooper program, thus resulting in its failure. Is protected from the fall out of the program by his deals with Walsh, if Walsh doesn't say anything about his involvement then Wheiner won't reveal the fact that Goose is technically Walsh's son.
Villians:
Queen of the Crown: The Queen of the Crown resides over a vast area of space, known as the Imperial Crown. Always on the look out to expand her territority, the Queen is especially interested in studying humans and many of her (mostly unsuccessful) attempts involve capturing more humans to put in her Psychocrypt. So far the only human she has been able to capture is Aliza Foxx, Captain Foxx's wife. The Queen controls an army called Slaver Lords, created from stolen life forces and she contains a link with each one via a Psychocrystal, thus being able to have eyes and ears over a vast distance.
Ryker Killbane: A Supertrooper like Goose, Killbane is in many ways Goose's revival. Often because of resentment of the way that Walsh held up Goose as an example, not knowing the real truth to Walsh's preference of him, it made him bitter and always set out to prove that he was better than Goose. Goose is the only one capable of going head to head with Killbane.
Captain Kidd: A self-serving smuggler and mercenary, always on the look out for wealth, power and booty on his pirate ship, The Iron Falcon. He was the one who initially captured the Foxx family and tried to turn them over to the Queen of the Crown, of which Aliza Foxx ended up as a captive of the Queen. When he was double crossed by the Queen, he turned against her as an ally of humans in exchange for fuel and technology.
MacCross: Leader of the Black Hole gang, MacCross is one of the recurring villains in the Galaxy Rangers. He and his gang are always on the hunt for Star Stones and other means of obtaining wealth.
Daisy O'Meaga: An outlaw who doesn't have a particular affiliation, even though she is often involved with the Black Hole Gang but only if she gets something out of it.
Lazarus Slade: A brilliant scientist, turned outcast by the World Federation as his experiments were deemed too dangerous. Wants to marry the Queen of the Crown and share in her power, even though the Queen doesn't return his affections. Leaves death cards at the scene of his crimes.
Scarecrow: A being from another time, an evil parallel universe that crossed into the main one. Buried deep on a remote planet, was accidently releasesed when it sensed the life forms that had accidentally let it lose.
All 65 episodes of the Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers have been released in two volumes in region 1. The episodes are also online and I've located a site here , which houses them.
