sixth floor update!

Good afternoon (and sad afternoon since Andy Roddick just lost in Wimbledon WOE FOR ME)!

We just wanted to make a quick announcement to let everyone know about a change to one of the rooms on the sixth floor. After some discussion, we've decided to modify the padded room into a multipurpose room in the vein of the Danger Shop. It will have two settings: (1) a physical safe room of your own design or a (2) psychically and magically shielded meditation room of your own design. Those who wish to use this room will be able to pick which environment they are using and pre-set a release time for when they are finished utilizing the room or not lock it at all, if they don't have a need to.

Thank you!

brand new pretty things!

As we announced earlier, the sixth floor of the dorms was renovated and completely redone. Now that the job's complete you are free to use any of the new attractions described in that post. As a reminder, the sixth floor now contains: full dining room with attached kitchen, a full dance floor with a pole and a disco ball, a ballpit, an art studio, and a padded room.  Tags have been created and you're free to use these establishments as you would a common room in the [livejournal.com profile] fandomhighdorms comm (save for the padded room).

So, go forth and enjoy your new sixth floor!

Way back in the day, there was an awesome plot that basically blew up the Sixth Floor of the dorms and left it completely uninhabitable. This summer, the graduate project will consist of both cleaning the mess that's been left up there and renovating the floor into something great.

Ah, renovations! We started talking and decided we'd like to hear from you guys on the topic. So, this is the place to hit us with ideas and suggestions for what you as players would like to see built up there. While you're thinking on it, keep in mind businesses in town that might already cover some of your ideas.

So, ping in and get those fantastic brains of yours storming! Once there is wee OCD, of course. PING!

New Deck Area/Campfire

[identity profile] just-add-starch.livejournal.com
Forgive me for spamming your flists! I'll stop that soon, I promise. Hopefully.

Anyway, as of this post, the new deck area/patio/campfire area has begun construction. It's going to, basically, be a very large deck with chairs, tables with umbrellas, and benches that you can sit and chat at, eat at, have a party at, etc. Whatever you'd like to do on a deck.

Right in front of the deck, is going to be the open grassy area where campfires can happen. The construction workers will be installing barbecues for cookouts, small benches, areas where fires can be lit, and there will be space to play horseshoes, volleyball, etc. That equipment won't be permanently set up but it can be used and set up if characters want to play.

There's going to be a Friday event to celebrate the grand opening of this area that will be open to teachers, townies, students and staff. It's the scheduled Friday event (we're not changing it) just in a new location. It's going to be a big area, plenty of room. After that, it can be used just as a common room would. Any student can make a post and any other student can wander up and join in.

This place will also be open to teachers and townies if they are invited by the students. For example, if Lee invited Igor for coffee, Igor's allowed to come on up to the dorms for some caffeine and a chat (I've got the Panera bread commercial in my head, shh).

Any questions? Comments? Free vacations to give me?

Hello!

If you would like to change your dorm living situation for the summer, please comment here stating what you want to do:

- Change to a different room on your own (state which floor you want: 2, 3, 4 or 5)
- Move in with someone else currently in the game (get the other person to comment here too, agreeing to the move)
- Get a brand new roommate out of the new batch of characters

Note: Cabin-related sign-ups will be later. This is just for dorm living.

Hello there!

It's been brought to our attention that there is some confusion about where teachers are allowed to go within the dorms. The rule is that teachers are not to mingle and 'hang out' in the dorms from the second floor above. They are, however, allowed to go up there to talk to a specific student about something or to attend a specific function (ie: a pre-arranged poker game, a birthday party, etc).

Teachers have always been allowed to frequent the first floor including the lobby. This was originally due to there being staff members' rooms being on the first floor. While now only Constable Fraser lives there and there are new facilities (as mentioned here and here), the rule has not changed. Faculty members are still free to use the first floor and all facilities within.

However, teachers do not have posting access to [livejournal.com profile] fandomhighdorms so please get a student to set up the post. Teachers and students can comment there.

The list of facilities will continue to be listed over at the [livejournal.com profile] fh_office account as it has been since the facilities were announced.

Hope that clears a few things up!

We've got a few things to announce!

Firstly, the first floor dorm renovations are now complete. Feel free to use the new facilities starting now. :)

Secondly, we'll be having some fun with the free time on Friday afternoons. Starting this week - then continuing biweekly - there will be staff meetings held in the [livejournal.com profile] fandom_lounge community. It'll be a post put up by one of the IC admins where teachers will be expected to show up, talk about work, students, upcoming events, and any problems with their jobs. There will be punch and pie. Hopefully neither punches nor pies will be thrown.

Every other week, the administration will be holding school assemblies. These will take place in the school auditorium and feature whatever kind of insanity we can come up with. Some weeks we'll have the opportunity for people to app a guest character, some weeks we'll have guests prearranged among the admin team, some weeks there will be no guests at all, and some weeks we'll do something a bit more... festive. Think the Friday Events from this summer adapted for the stage. Next week's theme? Motivational speakers.

We'll let you know stuff that you need to know for any of these events ahead of time.

Thank you for your time!

Hello!

We're renovating sections of the dorms.

First Floor

The first floor will be undergoing renovations all this week in game. At the end of it (we will notify when), the first floor will consist of the following:

* First floor lobby
* Large computer lab
* Garage (with bicycles and a few Vespas you can borrow)
* Study rooms
* A recreation room (with an air hockey table, dart board and other items to be determined)
* The gym
* Fraser's room
* The stable (which is near the dorms, but not actually attached)

Attics

The attics are now empty and we will eventually change all of them into something useful. Currently, one of the attics has been converted into an observatory under the direction of Doctor Ellie Arroway. Please contact Ellie if you wish to use the equipment in there.

Back to the dorms

Tonight is the official move back to the dorms. Everyone should be moved back into their rooms ICly by tomorrow morning.

Thank you and we hope you enjoyed your time in the cabins.

Like we did a couple weeks ago - but in reverse - Sunday night will be the official move back to the dorms. Everyone should be moved back into their rooms ICly by Monday morning.

And as it has been this entire time, the dorm building is still open and can be used. But until the move occurs, almost all interaction in [livejournal.com profile] fandomhighdorms should still take place out by the cabins unless there's a good reason to be in the dorms.

Thank you. And also thank you all for helping make the past two weeks in the cabins a success.

HOUSING

Okay, the votes are in and it seems that almost everyone is willing to at least try the cabins for special occasions. For the time being, everyone will be receiving a dorm assignment. The first week of summer semester (May 22-26) there will be a trial of the cabins. The length is unknown. We're still working on it and will give you further details once we get closer. After that trial, we'll put up another poll and everyone can vote as to whether they want to continue in the cabins after they've given it a try for a few days or whether to go back to the dorms. Housing for the rest of the semester will then be based on that poll.

Graduating seniors are no longer students once they graduate. As a result, all seniors who are staying on for summer will be moved out of their current rooms and to a room on the first floor by the end of the week. We'll give you a room assignment on Tuesday. To let you guys continue to interact, you will still be allowed up on the higher floors to socialize, but you won't be living up there.

Everyone else - new students and old students who have requested transfers - will get their dorm assignments on Tuesday.

Teachers - if you require temporary accommodation, please let us know and we'll assign you a room on the first floor. But please try to eventually look for housing in town.

WORKSHOPS

I am currently working on the weekly schedule for the workshops. Instructors, if there is a day you really CAN'T post on, let me know as soon as possible. Workshop sign-ups for Term 1 will be available for summer semester students some time before the end of the week.

NEW CHARACTERS

I'm sending out invitations to all new character accounts as soon as I post this message. Please DO NOT interact on the communities or arrive in Fandom until Tuesday. Monday is graduation day and it is for the seniors to have their glory day. You can arrive any time from Tuesday morning onwards. There will be a welcome post up where you can check in, get your room assignment in character and start to mingle. Also keep an eye out for common room posts after that as I'm sure a few people will love to get acquainted with you.

There is no 'big brother/big sister' program this time around, so please feel free to latch onto someone and beg them to show you the ropes :) Also, current players, please feel free to latch on to newbies and take them under your wing! Everyone here is nice and would love to help out, so don't worry new people, no one bites hard.

Dorm Housing

Any current students continuing next semester (excluding seniors as you won't be students anymore) who would like a new room, to get a roommate (if currently living alone) or get a new roommate (if currently living with someone), please contact us at administration@fandomhigh.net SOON (as in by the end of Sunday) so we can make arrangements.

Don't fret if you miss out. There will always be Fall semester.

Thanks.

[edit: Cabins are still open for discussion, but we'd just like the info for the record in case we decide to go with dorms.]

Okay, everyone -- this is Phase 1 of my ongoing project to standardize the dorm layout and some of its conventions. There was a whole plan where I was going to do these in TurboCAD and they were going to look all shiny and professional. There's just one problem. I haven't learned to use TurboCAD yet. So you get the rough Photoshop mockups which are not to scale. But there are some colors. Kinda.

Basic layout of floors 2-6 )

Basic layout of first floor )

ETA: Room numbers run from low on the common-room end to high. Because [livejournal.com profile] carter_i_am keeps catching these things for me, she gets a cookie.

Each floor has common bathrooms; because of the diversity of student culture here, there are a limited number of rooms on each floor with their own private bathrooms. Some of us have them, some don't, but effective this semester students whose cultural background might make them more uncomfortable using the common bathrooms will be getting priority pick of those. (There's tentacle monsters that occasionally pop up in the second floor common bathroom plumbing. Watch your feet.)

You'll notice I haven't done the attics yet. This is because I honestly don't have a clear picture in my head of what the attics are laid out like, so for those of you who live/lived on the attic level? Your input on how you picture the floor plan would be greatly appreciated. I'm assuming they're on the same level as what is the rest of the dorm roof.

Again, this is a rough draft, and hasn't taken into account any of the odd quirks everybody else has come up with. Within reason, I'm totally open to incorporating those into the ongoing dorm standardization project, so post those in the comments here, please!

If any of you currently have a student living alone in the dorms and would like one of the new students to be assigned to room with you, please leave a comment here.

I've been doing updates, off-and-on, and assuming my OCD has done what it should, then these are accurate as of now. So, I give you:

Curent Dorm Listings, By Floor and By Name

If I've got something incorrectly listed or you have a question of some other sort, please ask it. I'm here to make the living on campus aspect of this game as painless as I can.
