Workshops are a part of the summer camp experience at Fandom High. The following workshop guidelines are intended to help workshops be run in a fashion that is fun for both teacher and student, and also to ensure that workshops don't take up all of a student's playing time. As an out of character tool, workshops are intended to keep track of a character's activity in the game to avoid people holding onto characters that they don't play at all and to provide a chance for a structued activity to encourage player interaction. As an in character tool, they are intended to keep the students entertained, the teachers employed and give everyone something to do other than tanning themselves on the beach.

Expectations for Teachers

Teachers are expected to post their workshop once a week on their allocated day on the weekly workshop schedule. The workshop must be posted by 12pm PST (3pm EST). Teachers can post their workshop the night before if their availability will make posting in the morning difficult.

Teachers are required to provide your students with one workshop every week that allows them to sign their name (so the players can prove their presence in the game) and, if they choose to, participate in an activity. All activities can be handwaved by the student if they want, but the option should be there for those who want to play out the activity.

As summer camp is different from regular classes and is intended to be light, homework should be minimal and for preparation for the next workshop only.

Teachers are required to continue their workshop for the entire term and should plan to have 7 workshop sessions to fill that term. Finals are not necessary as it's not an academic class. Teachers can repeat the workshop in Term 2 or choose to teach a different workshop. Sign-ups for those workshops will occur closer to Term 2.

Teachers are allowed to have up to 2 teacher aides, but it's not compulsory. Preference for teacher aide positions during the summer should be given to recently graduated seniors. After that, regular students are fine. A teacher aide is a student who assists with in character paperwork, can be approached by other students and can cover workshops on occasion if the teacher is unable to be present. Out of character, your teacher aide is your back-up to post your workshop in the event that you are unable to be at the computer.

Teachers should keep an attendance roll. This is easily done by using a 'Sign In' thread at the top of each workshop post's comments. Teachers should inform the OOC administration team if someone has missed more than 3 workshops.

Teachers are allowed to give detention to students. Please arrange this OOCly with the student's player first. Other punishments are available through the administration if detention isn't plausible for OOC reasons.

Teachers are expected to provide student-teacher interaction in your workshops when possible.

Teachers should post an office hours post once a week to allow students to see the teachers out of the workshop environment. Offices are located on the maps found here.

NOTE: Workshops should not take a lot of time to prepare once you get the hang of it. We don't want workshops to suck up everyone's playing time. You don't need to spend time writing up a huge lecture. Linking to Wikipedia is fine. The key to workshops is setting up a scenario where the teacher and the students can interact and have fun. You are not expected to do a lot of work, so please don't expect your students to do a lot of work. It's a game and we're all here to have fun.

Expectations for Students

Students are expected to enroll in and attend at least 2 workshops but no more than 4 workshops per term.

Students are expected to at least sign in to each workshop. Participation beyond that is optional, but encouraged.

Students should inform their teachers if they are going to be absent. This applies to both OOC and IC (ie: if you know OOCly that you're going away from the workshop but the character doesn't know yet, let the teacher's player know).

Students can get detention for doing something wrong, not attending a workshop regularly or not completing homework consistently. If you - the player - are unable to participate in detention on Saturdays (US time), please let your teacher know OOCly so a different punishment can be arranged. Punishments are meant to be an IC consequence of actions, not a punishment on the player. Even detention is arranged to be fun for players.

NOTE: Workshops shouldn't take up all of your time. If you have to, just sign in and handwave any work, but please do try to keep up with your workshops as they are the bare minimum required to remain in the game. Your teachers go to the trouble of preparing them for you, so if you can participate, jump on in and have a bit of fun. You are not expected to do a lot of work. It's a game and we're all here to have fun.

Hey guys, just a few things about summer camp that will hopefully make everything run smoothly. All students and workshop instructors should read this.

WORKSHOPS

1) Workshops must be posted in a timely fashion (ie: by noon PST on the day the workshop is offered). If you cannot post during the day, then post it the night before. Posting the workshop at night on the day it's offered is not acceptable as it means that no one can interact well in the workshop. Do it early or on time or not at all.

2) Workshops are for students only. Teachers/workshop instructors/townies are not permitted to take workshops.

3) As workshops are based heavily on interaction, do your best to get in on the day the workshop is run and get the most out of your interaction with others.

4) Workshops can be set anywhere you like (with one exception), just let the students know. There are some workshops held in the Danger Shop. Those and those alone are allowed in the Danger Shop.

5) Please don't gatecrash workshops for the first week. If you want to do so sparingly from the second week onwards, please get the permission of the workshop coordinator well in advance. Workshop coordinators reserve the right to say no to any interloper without explanation.

CAMP AREA

The cabin/camp area is located in the preserve behind the school.

It looks a lot like this.

Camp Area Layout )

1) Meals are held in the dining hall where there are tables and chairs.
2) The gym area is not as large as the one back at the school, but there are a few machines and weights and bags and some room for sparring.
3) There is an outdoor deck opening onto the gym area for those of you who want to watch people get hot and sweaty.
4) Outside each cabin is a small campfire. These are like outdoor common rooms.
5) There is a main campfire for big gatherings. Feel free to use that as well.
6) Feel free to make up sekrit spots for a little bit of privacy. There is an abandoned shack and a path to the edge of the island that is bound to have lots of little quiet nooks for you lovey-dovey types.
7) You ARE allowed to go back to the dorms at any time during the day and evening, but you will be normally expected to be back in the camp area by lights out sleep in your cabin on a regular basis. A once off romantic tryst is fine, but please don't abuse the system.
8) Teachers/workshop instructors don't stay overnight in the camp area unless they've volunteered for overnight duty, in which case they can stay in Flamingo for the night.

CABINS

The interior of each cabin looks like this:

Cabin Interior )

1) Each student gets their own little alcove. Each alcove is separated from the one next to it by a 3/4 wall (basically, a wall that goes almost to the ceiling, but not quite). Each alcove is also given some privacy by having their own curtain across the front that can be opened or closed. You've got a bed and a set of drawers. Anything beyond that is up to you, but keep in mind that it's not a large space.
2) The bathrooms are communal, complete with toilet, basin and shower.
3) There are doors at each end and in the middle. The door in the middle leads out to the cabin's small fireplace that you're free to use.
4) There is a small indoor common room to use as well. That's there if the weather is bad, or if you want to stay inside and chat while people are asleep.
5) All cabins have electricity and air conditioning. Aren't you all lucky? So if someone wants to bring a stereo or TV (if you can get decent reception), then it's usable.

LABELLING YOUR POSTS

Similar scenario to how you normally label your posts. I will use the Flamingo cabin as an example.

Your alcove: Flamingo A1
Your common room: Flamingo common room
Your campfire: Flamingo campfire

Then lock or leave open as appropriate. We ask that everyone respects everyone else and it'll work out fine. If someone has a locked alcove post, be somewhere else at that time. But at the same time, don't monopolize the cabin with locked posts all the time. There's plenty of room in the area where you can have private conversations, so feel free to use it.

The main campfire should be labelled 'Main Campfire.' Everything else is pretty self-explanatory by the names on the map.

OTHER STUFF

You're free to go back into town or the dorms during your free time, but we do ask that you at least try to use the camp area this week.

Recent graduates will be around all the time and you're expected to do what they say. There will usually be a teacher around as well during the night.

We'll let you know tomorrow when you can move in.
