Thanks to the last couple of BDEs especially, the island of Fandom's undergone some pretty significant changes since the original island layout was drawn up in 2005. With that in mind, we thought we'd put together a post describing those changes as well as some other little interesting tidbits that may have fallen by the wayside over the years. For example, did you know there's a wallaby lurking around the dorms who enjoys magically making people's hair grow? For more information on this and other fascinating facts, read on!

And no, I'm not SAMMING anyone, I'm SPAMMING you but this is the last of it so you get off easily. For the newbies that might not know and the olbies that might have forgotten, we have several unofficial FH offshoot communities that have a variety of uses.

[livejournal.com profile] fandom_lounge is the equivalent of the Teacher's Lounge. All teachers can request access and make posts! Throw darts at Jamie Madrox's head, eat, talk smack, and relax. I’ve sent invites to current teachers so please check those and feel free to post if you’re a teacher. If you’re a teacher and don’t have access, just let me know in the comments!

What gets posted here: Any teacher’s lounge posts. Nothing more than that!

[livejournal.com profile] fandomassistant is for all TA's. It's sort of a pseudo teacher's lounge for those that don't get paid for the hard work they do. Again, all TA's, library aides and clinic aides are welcome to request membership. Only those with keys can make posts. Invites for this community will probably have to wait until all TA’s, library aides and clinic aides are chosen for the new semester.

What gets posted here: The TA’s lounge. Nothing more than that!

[livejournal.com profile] fandom_quotes is for the best quotes the game brings you. Find something funny? Something sad? Something that makes you hurt? Post it to this comm and give it the attention it deserves. This comm is open to all current FH characters.

What gets posted here: Your favorite quotes from the land of Fandom. This is an OOC community so nothing is IC here.

[livejournal.com profile] fandomhitunes is just what it sounds like. Got a playlist for your character? Want to post things like the OST to Snakes on a Plane? Have random songs that make you think of characters? Post them here. This one is open to all current FH characters though community membership is moderated.

What gets posted here: Music! This is another OOC community.

[livejournal.com profile] fandomtherapy is the goof off community. It's where the muns can come out and lament what their character makes them do, it's where a character can write letters of outrage, it's where just about anything can happen. Again, open to all current FH characters.

What gets posted here: OOC but IC posts made by the characters lamenting their latest woe or chatting each other up without it having IC consequences. Posts by the muns of the characters can also be made here to moan and groan about the latest trauma their characters put them through!

[livejournal.com profile] fh_fic is fic that's based on FH characters and/situations. They can be AU, crack, how a scene should have ended etc. Anything you'd like to write. This one is also open to current FH characters though community membership is moderated.

What gets posted here: Fandom High related fic! This is an OOC community.

[livejournal.com profile] fh_icons is a place to post all the artwork you've made. It's for icons of FH characters, banners, graphics, etc. This one is also open to current FH characters though community membership is moderated.

What gets posted here: Graphics! Whether they be icons, banners, headers, moodthemes, this is an OOC community for the prettier things we all love.

[livejournal.com profile] fh_squee is similar to [livejournal.com profile] fandom_quotes save for the fact that it's about pimping/praising threads and/or posts and not just a quote. This can be funny, sad, painful, powerful, anything. If you think it deserves praise, please post about it. And open to current FH'ers here too.

What gets posted here: Posts, threads, or plots that you wanna praise for making you laugh, cry, squee or anything else.

If I've missed anything, you have something to add, you're a comm maintainer and need to tell me something, etc, please let me know here!

Hello, brainiacs!

As you may have already guessed, there is a method to the madness of the Mad Scientist and it is going to be your job to find out what that madness is! As in some of our past BDE's, we will randomly distribute a few significant pieces of information to some of the research group that will be important in helping find out the why's and what's of the Mad Scientist. Those pieces of information will directly lead you to the motivations behind this attack.

Unlike some of our past BDE's, we're also going to distribute a few unimportant and misleading pieces of information to the research group in order to give as many people as we can a chance to find something and make researching a little more difficult for those involved. Emails with specific clues and specific dates have gone out so you know what to find and when to find it! It can't always be easy to catch a mad scientist, can it?

Starting Tuesday, March 23, researching will get rolling so we can get all clues, good and bad out there. The library will be open for all members of the research team to hunker down with books, computers, periodicals and each other to find out just what is going on. The pertinent pieces of information will be found all week, but one major one will be saved for Saturday's research session -- and all the clues will be passed along to our strike teams!

How will they be passed along? We're glad you've asked. From Tuesday on, a whiteboard will be posted in the library in the form of an additional thread that links to one stable post that will just grow and grow over the week. There, those who find their clues can write it down and anyone who needs to see (including members of our strike team) can say they've seen it!

Clue-finding schedule, just for your reference: )

[livejournal.com profile] fandom_lounge is the equivalent of the Teacher's Lounge. All teachers can request access and make posts! Throw darts at Jamie Madrox's head, eat, talk smack, and relax. [livejournal.com profile] fh_freshmen, [livejournal.com profile] fh_sophomores, [livejournal.com profile] fh_juniors, and [livejournal.com profile] fh_seniors are the planning communities for the different classes. These can be used for class wide pranks, class wide trips, or anything else that you can think of that you'd like to make a class wide thing. Also open to current FH characters.

[livejournal.com profile] fh_icons (and thank you to [livejournal.com profile] fair_montague for pointing out that this one may be a sequel of sorts to [livejournal.com profile] fandomhighicons) is a place to post all the artwork you've made. It's for icons of FH characters, banners, graphics, etc. This one is also open to current FH characters

[livejournal.com profile] fandom_cookbook is for FOOD. Or, more specifically, recipes for good good food. I bet there's a pie recipe in there somewhere. Open to FH'ers!

If there's anything I missed, any comm I missed, anything you'd like to add (if, again I missed something, or you mod one of these comms and would like to let people know something), please feel free to comment here.

Feel free to join them all, join a few, or just watch them. Up to you!

New Apartments!

[identity profile] just-add-starch.livejournal.com
Sorry to spam your flists but there's a lot of information to get out before all the new students and adults arrive tomorrow (YAY *EXCITEDS*).

Anyway, as I'm sure you all remember from the summer semester, Xander Harris spearheaded a pretty big project in town: the renovation and reconstruction of the old Echolls mansion.

Well, that project was completed and thus, we can unveil Malchanceux Harris Apartments or MHA for short (and even MCA II since Xander's last name isn't Harris anymore!).

More Info Under the Cut! )

Welcome to Malchanceux Harris Apartments!

Offices!

Monday, August 25th, 2008 11:51 am
[identity profile] just-add-starch.livejournal.com
Teachers new and experienced! Teachers young and old! Teachers pie loving and...pie hating!

Ahem.

The teachers' offices are on the second floor of the school building. You can see that layout here. This has some outdated information on it but I am posting it so everyone can see the layout (and because I am at work and can't actually update that page). The new and current list of offices is here So teachers without offices, come and check out the floor plan, see which offices are free (the guys from last semester get to keep theirs if they want to) and comment below with what office number you want. I'll add it to the list.

If someone has commented with the number you want before you got to it and you really want it, talk to them about it then let me know what the two of you decide. All new teachers should pick an office number for the sake of OCD continuity.

ETA: There were some teachers lost in the wonders of the school but they have since been found and added to the list.

Want a New Roommate?

[identity profile] just-add-starch.livejournal.com
If you're looking for a roommate in the dorms, please comment below. Roommates may be taken from the new batch of characters or from other current characters who want a roommate. No requests for specific characters please and commenting doesn't guarantee you'll get someone, but we'll see what we can do, definitely. Any other room changes can still go through [livejournal.com profile] fh_office.

Comments are screened.

Getcher OCD!

[identity profile] just-add-starch.livejournal.com
Let's face it, you can never have enough OCD, right? In an effort to further organize some things for you guys, we're asking for your help with a few things.

We're in the process of creating a spreadsheet to nail down the different things in each common room and miscellaneous area so people know what they can mod and what they cannot.

You can get a sneak peek of an unfinished version here.

I'm going to OCD this OCD post and, if you could, drop a comment if you know there's something in a certain area so we can add it and make this list definitive. This post will stay open till the end of the week. Once that week's done, we'll compile and present the completed spreadsheet to you.

Townies, look for something similar to this post in the near future.

Here Comes The Bride(s)?

Just a small update from me this time, I promise. Anyway, there was a request made for a separate calendar (in the same vein as the plot calendar) for weddings and such.

Weddings and Things!

This will get linked in the userinfo of [livejournal.com profile] fhplotterywheel. Those who are getting married or are thinking about getting married can see the open dates so you don't schedule a wedding on the same date as someone else.

In the future, we might use this one for other random life events (babies, receptions, bar mitzvahs) but it's just weddings for now!

So...start getting married.

New Deck Area/Campfire

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008 08:24 am
[identity profile] just-add-starch.livejournal.com
Forgive me for spamming your flists! I'll stop that soon, I promise. Hopefully.

Anyway, as of this post, the new deck area/patio/campfire area has begun construction. It's going to, basically, be a very large deck with chairs, tables with umbrellas, and benches that you can sit and chat at, eat at, have a party at, etc. Whatever you'd like to do on a deck.

Right in front of the deck, is going to be the open grassy area where campfires can happen. The construction workers will be installing barbecues for cookouts, small benches, areas where fires can be lit, and there will be space to play horseshoes, volleyball, etc. That equipment won't be permanently set up but it can be used and set up if characters want to play.

There's going to be a Friday event to celebrate the grand opening of this area that will be open to teachers, townies, students and staff. It's the scheduled Friday event (we're not changing it) just in a new location. It's going to be a big area, plenty of room. After that, it can be used just as a common room would. Any student can make a post and any other student can wander up and join in.

This place will also be open to teachers and townies if they are invited by the students. For example, if Lee invited Igor for coffee, Igor's allowed to come on up to the dorms for some caffeine and a chat (I've got the Panera bread commercial in my head, shh).

Any questions? Comments? Free vacations to give me?

Also there will be an island-wide plot running November 12-16.

More information and details will be made available as the dates approach.

BDE and You

Friday, July 13th, 2007 11:30 pm
[identity profile] ismyhairout.livejournal.com
Hello!

Today, our BDE friends will be appearing. That is to say, dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures will be fading into existence around Fandom.

There will be no fighting today. That will be for tomorrow and Sunday. You can interact with the dinos that appear today and there will be a post made available for that tonight, but they will not be aggressive types and are not open for fighting, so please don't provoke them.

For those who haven't been through a BDE before or those who might want a refresher, here's a basic run-down of what goes on.

Friday: Dinosaurs and other creatures appear! No fighty, but by Friday night you can probably get the feeling that something bad/weird is about to happen.

Saturday: The attack begins. This will occur in a specific post and will contain an OOC note at the bottom giving instructions and opening it up to the rest of the town. There will be a post for specific locations for the big fights and plenty of smaller dinosaurs (raptors omg) running around to wreak havoc. Also, research in the library (see thread below).

Saturday Night: You will need to find somewhere either in the dorms or in town to settle in for the night. It will not be safe at all to wander around and you're as good as dead if you do. If you want to be with someone in particular, be sure to arrange it OOCly because you're not going to be able to move around during the night. A Council of War (consisting of the people in charge and whoever else is at Caritas) will come up with a plan of attack for the next day. It will not necessarily succeed.

Sunday: More fighting and there will be a big grand fight with a bunch of dinosaurs and a special guest at the Rocky Bits. At the same time, people from the research crowd will have figured out how to get rid of the dinosaurs (and how they got here) and will be enacting a plan to do just that. The dinosaurs will be gone on Sunday night and everything will be back to relative normality by Monday morning.

Stuff You Should Know

* Due to the nature of the enemy's appearance in Fandom, magic will not be as effective as it normally would. Any attempts to outright dispose of the enemy with magic will fail. Attempts to freeze or damage the enemy will not be as effective as usual and will sap the magic user's energy more than they expect it to. Powers such as alchemy, bending and superpowers will not be affected unless it involves a deus ex machina type result.

* The BDE has a set beginning and a set end. You don't have to worry about those parts. We've got it covered. Please don't try to act out your own way to save the day and get rid of the enemy and expect it to work. It won't, because it's much more fun if everyone gets their chance to fight and play for the weekend.

* There are actual people who play the dinosaurs out of [livejournal.com profile] fh_fillers (since we're almost out of icons on [livejournal.com profile] fh_extras). In the main fighting post, there will always be someone looking out for new people wanting a fight, but it may take time so please be patient. Also, if you do not want dinosaurs to appear in your other posts around town (including business posts), please specifically say so in an OOC note down the bottom or everywhere (excluding Caritas, the clinic and the dorms) is free game for chaos provided there is a post up!

* On a similar note, as with any combat-type thread, don't mod your opponent (dino) or their reaction. And please, we are limited in numbers, so make the most of the fight scenes you get.

* If you want a serious injury (that is anything from deep cuts to concussion to very nearly losing a limb to stuff that will require surgery) please use the thread below to state your intentions. This will assist the clinic staff. Also a brief OOC note in your combat thread will remind the NPC dinosaur player to help you out. If you don't state your serious injury here, you're not getting it. No "surprise amputation!" please.
[identity profile] ismyhairout.livejournal.com
This is all going behind an LJ cut because it's damned long, but if you have an alumni character or even if you're just interested, please read through it. This is the official stance on alumni topics of interest and, even if it is a little belated, we're finally setting ground rules for the alumni community and the activities of its members. Hopefully this will clear a few things up and provide a structure for people to operate by.

It's a Way of Life )
bigdamnprincipal: (Default)
[personal profile] bigdamnprincipal
1. You get out of this game what you put into it. If you want to get involved, the key is to get your character to know other characters. If there's a common room post or any post that says 'open' that's an invitation to go for it. If you want people to notice you, you have to put in the effort to be noticed.

2. Don't bite off more than you can chew. With such a big game, there is always a lot going on and even within one post there is the temptation to ping into every thread. It's better to be timely in replying to the few threads you have than make people wait ages while you get through everyone. Same goes for workshops, classes, clubs and plots.

3. ICA=ICC. You will see this acronym a lot. It means "in character actions = in character consequences." If your character does something, you are expected to deal with the consequences. Pretty easy stuff!

4. Everyone is fictional, so no one is fictional. We use meta in place of normal pop culture references so that everyone stays real. So, for example, even if Heroes is a real show in your character's universe, your character would not know that show in Fandom. They would know it as 'Supers' (the meta version). Confused? We use fake names for shows/movies/some books/etc so everyone here gets to stay real. You can find examples at the FH Wiki at www.fhwiki.com. The exceptions are mainstream Disney (Mickey, Minnie, etc), Looney Tunes, The Muppets and classic literature (excluding Hamlet and Macbeth). Your characters could conceivably know about these things because Bugs, Mickey and Co. are considered to be real "people" who are actors and perform their shows. The Muppet Show pretended to be a real stage show, so the Muppets were an acting troupe in their time and classic lit is free game until a character from there shows up, then we pretend the meta name was in usage all along or that the book is a retelling of a real person's life. Reality is still reality, so reality TV shows, Do It Yourself makeover-type shows and The Food Network stay as is. Confused? You'll get the hang of it.

5. Learn the ropes. The handbook is a great place to figure out the basics of what goes where. If in doubt, ask someone if you're confused, but learning the basics is a good place to start. FHWiki is also great for poking around for information (especially if you have no freaking clue what some people are going on about. Sometimes it's an easily explained in-joke).

6. OOC Communication is Your New Best Friend. Got a problem? Talk to someone about it. Don't know what you're doing? Talk to someone about it. Pretty much everything can be resolved by talking to someone. Keeping your lines of communication open makes things oh so much easier. It's probably a good idea to get AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) as that's what most folks around here use.

7. You don't have to read everything. Lots of people. Lots of characters. Lots going on. You don't have to get through it all. [livejournal.com profile] fandom_radio's main purpose is to summarize the day's events in an in character broadcast (ie: the characters can tune in and listen to the day's gossip) and give you links that you, the player, can click on to read if you really want to. But you're not expected to know everything that's going on. Just be sure to keep up to date with [livejournal.com profile] fandomhigh_ooc and listen out for in character announcements on the [livejournal.com profile] fandomhigh comm. Everything else is optional.

8. Modding is bad, mkay? Modding is when you try to dictate what someone else's character or environment is doing. The biggie here is that you can't dictate what the weather is (check [livejournal.com profile] fh_weather for up to date details) and you can't suddenly come up with big things that the rest of the island will have to deal with like a new statue in the park or a herd of mammoths waltzing through town. On a smaller scale, infer what you want to do, but always give your RPing partner a chance to do something else with their character if they want to. Example of modding: "Hades hugged Rikku." Example of getting the point across without modding: "Hades went to hug Rikku." This states Hades' intention and still gives Rikku a chance to run far, far away if she wants. If in doubt, check with your RPing partner to see what's okay either via OOC comments in the thread or poke them on AIM.

9. You have to run guest stars and plots by the admins first. Want to run a storyline of your own? You'll get the hang of this by seeing what other people do, and definitely talk to your sibling/buddy about this as they'll be able to explain it in more detail, but basically if you want to do anything big or have anyone visit the island for whatever reason, you have to email the admins for approval in advance. This is to moderate character traffic, make sure things stay cool for everyone involved in the game and so the admins can help you iron out any problems that you might not immediately see. This pretty much falls under the "when in doubt, ask" thing.

10. Don't assume everyone knows your canon. You'll find an array of players at Fandom High coming from a variety of backgrounds. Even if you think your show/movie/comic/book/play is the most commonplace thing ever, chances are someone will never have heard of it and, as such, may not know that your character is awesome. Enlighten them! Put up an information post, tell people where they can get the canon if they want to, fill them in on details about your character if they ask. The best way to pimp your canon is to give the best portrayal of your character that you can.

Other random tidbits )

Linky linky )

This looks like a lot, but basically it's just here to preemptively answer any questions you might have and to be a nifty reference tool. We love us some obsessive-compulsiveness when it comes to being organized.
[identity profile] ismyhairout.livejournal.com
Due the multiversal nature of the game and as we get more graduates spreading out beyond their canon, there will obviously be the temptation to visit universes that your character is not native to. An example of this would be Jamie Madrox's duplicates visiting various places.

There are a few simple guidelines that everyone should follow to allow this to happen with as little fuss as possible. If you're just passing through and there are no characters in Fandom from that canon, then it's okay to have a few scenes and move on. If you intend to have more than 2-3 harmless scenes in the canon where there are no characters in Fandom (ie: more than a brief visit, any kind of plottiness), you will need to write in for admin permission in advance.

If you wish to visit or meddle with a canon that is not your own but that does have characters in Fandom, you are required to contact every player involved in that canon and get their approval. It's only polite, so please be sure to do the legwork before messing with someone else's canon.

The Library and You

Wednesday, May 16th, 2007 02:45 pm
[identity profile] no-toast-thanks.livejournal.com
The school library is one of those special places that is run by a particular set of people and blah-di-blee, here's the lowdown for you.

First of all, please keep in mind that the library can only be opened by the librarian and library aides.

1. The library is open throughout the school day, and at least twice a week during school breaks. It may be opened after hours or on weekends with the special permission of the library staff (ask OOCly at least a day in advance please).

2. Students may check out any number of books for a period of one week if they have a library card. All students and faculty have received library cards at this time.

3. Faculty may check out books for two weeks.

4. Teachers are asked to give 24 hours' notice before sending a large (enrollment >3 people) class to the library.

5. The library is fully equipped; it has books and magazines from all dimensions, multi-dimensional Internet access, and DVDs, VHS and CDs to meet your needs. The books are arranged roughly according to Dewey Decimal System, although the library may rearrange itself when we aren't looking. The materials are on public shelves with a few exceptions:

a. Audiovisual materials are in a storage area behind the counter. A staff member will pull anything you request while you wait, but they cannot leave the library. You can watch them with headphones using the facilities in the library.

b. Certain materials are in Special Collections. The basics are that things are in SC if they:
I. Are obscene. You ARE in high school.
II. Are old, rare or otherwise extremely valuable.
III. Directly concern another character at Fandom High.
IV. Could be harmful -- for instance, instructions on building a bomb, or specific magical spells.

To get into Special Collections, students must have a note from a faculty member and link to it in the library thread. If you're researching another cast member, please get and submit their OOC permission as well. Please let the library staff know that you want to go in there a few days in advance so we can moderate traffic. You should really only be going in there for plotty or class purposes.

Access to SC can be simple, but it's sentient, so sometimes things get...interesting. (It's rumored to be not exactly in this world, and it's much larger inside than outside). If you want an SC adventure, let the library staff know at least 48 hours in advance and we will try to accommodate you.

6. As always, in-character actions = in character consequences. Meaning, if you want to play out stealing or vandalizing a book, or otherwise misusing the library, go for it, but there ARE cameras and you WILL get caught. The librarian isn't too keen on books being abused. No, really.

7. Current library staff are Isabel Evans, Bridge Carson, Sam Winchester and librarian Thursday Next. We will be hiring again in September. Staff operate as a collective; sometimes, the aide on duty will need to check with the others before making a decision. Please be patient.

The library is currently a mess, so finding things is not as easy as usual. Feel free to drop by if you need something and we'll do our best to find what you need. Also, don't mind the fictional characters who might drop by every once in a while. They don't bite. Mostly.

This was originally written by one of my predecessors. Possibly Yomiko. Possibly someone before. Thanks to them!

The radio and you!

Okay. Radio. Please to be explaining?
Now that the new characters are arriving on the island, I just wanted to remind you all about how conversations and actions end up on the radio.

IG, the pirate knows all through *handwavey* technology of handwaveyness. And the occasionally shrub-shaped outfit. And the squirrels who seem to have a drinking problem and a fondness for being bribed.

God, I love this game.

Anyway, from a more practical angle, the radio has a group of researchers who go through and summarize every post and every thread that all of you make every single day. There are six of them and like, a bazillion of you, so they do a hell of a job. Yeah. Give them some serious love.

If you don't want something to be broadcast, please mark the post--if it's in a private room--with a NFB (not for broadcast) either in the headline, or at the bottom of the entry, and our researchers'll skip right past it. We'll also skip any post marked "private" or "OOC." You can also let us know that the people going in and out are mentionable, but not the contents of their conversations: we use this with the clinics and the town jail, just as a few examples. We've also been assuming that not even the pirate is foolhardy enough to have bugged the principal's office.

Because detentions are supposed to be private to those involved and not for the general entertainment of the student population, if it it's mentioned at all on the radio it's only in a "and there was detention" kind of way. We can neither confirm nor deny that students spent every weekend last year kicking Seely in the crotch :D

If your conversation is taking place in a public post (the park, the Perk, the gym, cafeteria, whatever) and you want the contents of it not to be for broadcast, mark the thread as such. Because it is in public, your characters will still be seen there but the *handwavey* technology of handwaveyness will have gone on the fritz,or the shrub will have gotten bored listening or whatever.

With the new influx of awesome and active characters, we are sorting through a good hundred plus threads of information every day--and those are on days when we're not having invasions or forming up mobs--so help us help you keep plotty things and secret relationships secret by marking your posts as NFB.

The pirate and his crew o' buccaneers thank ye!

And speaking of his crew, I'm spamming the flist putting up a sign-up in Barbossa's journal for any characters who would be interested in taking a turn at the microphone this semester or signing up to be a researcher. Mwahaha.

Cabin Assignments and Info

Cabins

Hello!

These are the cabin assignments for Summer Semester (Term 1). We have kept together all of the pairs that signed up and the rest of you have been slotted into an open space. You may know some of your cabinmates, you may not. It's only for three weeks and cabins are a great opportunity to get to know characters that you might not necessarily interact with on a regular basis.

All of the listing behind the cut are in alphabetical order for each section (A or B) for each cabin. Sort out amongst yourselves which of the alcoves (1-4) you would like to take as your own.

Students will be moving to the cabins on Friday. New students will be able to store their stuff in their new rooms, then shuffle off to the cabins. Old students will mosey on over there during the day to set up.

Please note: the following cabin assignments are just that - cabin assignments. Room assignments for the dorms will be posted before Friday. Keep an eye out.

The cabins have been renamed this year. This year's theme: mythical creatures!

The new Sheriff and you

Tuesday, May 1st, 2007 01:18 pm
[identity profile] light-a-spark.livejournal.com
As you might have noticed by now, there’s a new Sheriff in town which means that there might be some slight adjustments as to how violence in plots should be handled IC. OOC however, the same rules still apply.

So what will be changing? Well for one thing, Roy Mustang is definitely not Tex. Whereas Tex pretty much didn’t give a damn and her morals could be bought, Roy Mustang is an idealist. On one side this might be a good thing because; hey, a sheriff who actually cares. On the other, it will need some more careful treading.

To compensate for this however, most of the troopers have left together with Tex. There is a squad left (consisting of 9 clone troopers) and one Sheriff. They will be covering security around the island in shifts, this means that Fandom Troopers is understaffed. There aren’t a whole lot of patrols anymore and there should be a bit more leeway to get away with violence. Just keep in mind that it is still a small town and certain things will just draw attention.

OOC we still expect you to clear any serious violence with us. Serious being any fights that could lead to major injuries, destruction of public property or which involves weaponry. Fisticuffs and other minor forms of violence don’t have to be included.

These changes have been added to the townie guide so it will be easy to find for future references. I added a 'patch note' in the comments so you can see the changes that have been made.

Comments? Questions? Concerns? Turtleducks?

ETA: Being a dork, I made an OOC info post on Roy Mustang on his lj and then realised that he's not on the flist yet. D'oh. Anyway, it's there if anyone wants to read.

Security and You

Monday, January 8th, 2007 08:09 am
[identity profile] just-add-starch.livejournal.com
So, security.

On school grounds, there are basically two aspects to school security. The cameras and the school's administration (Fraser, Zoe, Tick, Hades etc). If your character does something against school rules on school grounds, expect to get caught either via the cameras or via a school official and get escorted to the principal's office. If your character has to do something against school rules on school grounds, this will need to be cleared with the admins beforehand so the cameras can go on the blink and school officials aren't paying attention. Once the transgression is discovered though, your character will be punished in some way.

Security is basically in place on school grounds to prevent weapons from being brought into prohibited areas and to make sure the students, staff and faculty are safe.

If you require one of the school officials for a scene, please feel free to email or ping anyone so it can be set up and someone can be arranged to be there to catch your student doing bad naughty things. If you'd prefer to just have the cameras catch your student, that's cool too. That means you just don't get any lectures on why you're like an Inuit and how you can improve from Fraser. *g*

Town security is a little different. Tex and the Fandom Troopers run town security. Almost all the same rules apply. If you do something bad in town, expect the Troopers to come and catch you. If you'd like to not get caught right away, please just let the admins know so the Troopers can be pining away for Wonka focusing their attention elsewhere. If you're caught in town, you'll most likely be escorted to Trooper Station and held there.

Questions? Comments? Cookies?

It's also a reminder for current players, but you don't need that, right?

Subject lines:
1. Please always use a subject line. Even if you aren't doing anything that wants interaction (i.e., if it is just an email, letter or an OOC post). Subject lines help make this clear at just a glance.

2. Please always tell us where you are. Even if it is just your room. If you want people to come talk to your character, they need to know where you are. A location isn't absolutely necessary for email, letter or phone posts though.

3. Please always tell us the approximate time of day. Morning, afternoon, etc. is fine. This is mostly for the dorms where we often end up with multiple posts for the same location throughout the day. It also applies to any NPC businesses in town though.

Tagging:
Tags have been made for all of the new students in [livejournal.com profile] fandomhighdorms. Only comm maintainers can make tags, but all comm members can add tags. Please try and remember to add the tag for your character when you join any posts in this comm.

If you are making a post in [livejournal.com profile] fandomtownies, always remember to use the appropriate tag. Please take a look at the Ultimate Townie Guide to make sure you are aware of specific requirements when posting there.

Teachers: We will have a new set of class tags posted for use in [livejournal.com profile] fandomhigh before the start of classes next week.

What goes where:
The only posts in [livejournal.com profile] fandomhigh should be classes, clubs, announcements over the PA system, and other official school activities.

[livejournal.com profile] fandomhighdorms is for any public posts on school grounds outside of official school activities. Common room posts, visits to the gym or shooting range, stuff like that.

[livejournal.com profile] fandomtownies should be used for any posts around town, in stores, or in common areas of houses or apartments (the lobby, or living room, or porch). The common areas in townie residences can also go into personal journals depending on how open the post is. Use your common sense.

Personal journals should be used for posts in personal living spaces (dorm rooms or a townie's apartment), teacher office hours, out of town posts that don't go into [livejournal.com profile] fh_trips, random OOC posts or availability notices, or the occasional post that wanders around so much that it's easiest just to keep it in one place. Posts that are primarily links drops for your character should ALWAYS be in your personal journal.

[livejournal.com profile] fh_trips is for larger group outings to places farther than The Mainland. Big group outings to a ball game, a road trip to Vegas with several friends, field trips. That kind of stuff. [livejournal.com profile] fh_trips can be used with permission from the admins.

[livejournal.com profile] fandomhigh_ooc is generally for things of an OOC but non-personal nature - updates on the friending list, informational posts on group outings or events, or OOC administration announcements (like this one!). Player availability posts should always go in your personal journal.

[livejournal.com profile] fhplotterywheel is for plot proposals, recruitment and information.

Fandom Island's origins are shrouded in mystery, but from the look of the town and the school itself, one might assume it's older than anything on the mainland...

Since the very beginning of the game it has been established that Fandom is a very old city (based loosely on Mont St Michel). The island is small and town has very narrow streets, made in a time before cars. You could ride a horse, bicycle, moped or a golf cart through the streets, but nothing larger.

It follows that the buildings, at least in most parts of town, are old but retrofitted for modern conveniences. The houses and apartment buildings are newer, but the streets themselves haven't changed for a very long time.

The inhabitants of the town number around 250, and that's including NPCs both mentioned and assumed. Given the size of it, there really aren't any areas of the town itself that the Troopers couldn't reach fairly quickly, should the need arise.

The school itself sits on top of a hill overlooking the town. The dormitories are attached by a covered walkway, but are separate from the school. Fandom High is probably the oldest building on the island, but, again, it's all modern on the inside. has been blowed up (see Graduation of '07 Class). The dormitories, the Danger Shop, the shed, the stables and the garage still stand (more or less in some cases).

Here are some pictures of the town and the school, to give you an idea what it looks like and here is the [livejournal.com profile] ft_directory post with the most recent map of the island.

Near town are the Rocky Bits and the beach, both of which have been left in their natural state and make good places for fights or clandestine meetings for whatever your plot needs may be.

Behind the school is the Preserve - the woods and beaches there are all protected land due to the various species of animals that may or may not live there. From the air and on maps, the Preserve looks to be a fairly modest size. However, once you enter the Preserve, it has a tendency to be like the TARDIS in that it's bigger on the inside than it is on the out.

Any questions?

[identity profile] drywitmartini.livejournal.com
Hello!

Welcome one and all. Unfortunately, I have to bring up an issue that everyone needs to know about.

Weapons are not allowed on school grounds outside of the salle and gun range. All weapons should be checked into the weapons locker. Even those that have been concealed in rooms in the past please. You can access the weapons locker when you need to take it into town, the shooting range, or the salle, but all weapons should stay locked in the weapons locker when not used in those places unless you have admin approval.

There are cameras in all public areas and the video feeds are monitored. That means that if you have a weapon while walking around (whether it's loaded, is a gun, sword, knife, dagger, bommyknocker, anything) it MUST be concealed under your clothing - but really, there should be a good reason for you doing so. Just walking around with a weapon for the sake of it isn't on.

Anyone found using a weapon on campus will be expelled (or fired in case of teachers) except in the case of a standard monster invasion.

Anyone found carrying a weapon on campus outside of the gun range and salle will have their weapon permanently confiscated and there may be further punishment depending on the situation.

Please folks. This is a school setting. The administration is trying to make sure the school stays as a safe haven. This means not having kids running around with weapons. Otherwise we'll get to a point where there are shoot-outs in the hallways and paranoia will run rampant. We don't want that. Keep the weapons to an absolute minimum and keep them out of the dorms.

Thanks! Now get back to entertaining me.

*grabs popcorn*
[identity profile] ladder62.livejournal.com
Because all the cool kids are OOCing for the newbies these days 8)

There is an NPC school nurse who staffs the school infirmary during normal school hours. Your character can feel free to handwavily visit her for basic medical needs (bandages, aspirin, condoms... ;) )

Fandom Town Emergency Clinic, or NAMBLA FTEC is where all townies go, as well as characters with major medical needs and/or the desire to RP out medical care. It's staffed by doctors, students with some sort of healing/medical experience, Tommy Gavin who has first-response training, and an NPC nurse who helps cover all the gaps.

The NPC nurse is always on duty regardless of whether or not the clinic post mentions it. Townies or anyone else who want to handwave medical care are free to use her without asking permission. Medical care that is RPed is covered by two shifts, day and night, and the schedule is always updated at [livejournal.com profile] fandom_clinic's userinfo so you know who's on staff. In RP time a general rule of thumb is that if it's before 6pm Fandom Time your character uses the day shift, if it's after 6pm Fandom time they should go to the night.

If you know in advance that a huge medical problem is coming up (this would include long-term overnight stays and RP events that will result in multiple characters showing up at the clinic at once) please please PLEASE contact either me or the person on staff that shift to give them advance warning. That way we can schedule extra hands to help, make sure the clinic's got the supplies you need, etc.

Finally, if any of the new characters would like to work clinic shifts you can let me know in the comments and we can make arrangements for Tommy to interview you. No guarantees on getting a job until we know what your character can bring to the party, but can't hurt to try =)

About Security

Just to add to the list of OOC notices going up for the new students, I thought I'd drop a line about security.

Meet Constable Benton Fraser, the head of school security at Fandom High. Basically, his job is to ensure the safety of the students and faculty while they're in classes and students while they're in their dorm rooms. He'll break up fights, keep an eye out for weapons on persons, and enforce any other rule that might endanger students and faculty.

If you know you're going to need security beforehand for a plot purpose, drop me an email so I'm not caught off guard and the admins can know about it.

Fraser won't interrupt posts unless it is absolutely necessary or if a prior arrangement has been made to stop a fight from breaking out etc.

Sometimes, I will just drop him in a thread to interact. He's friendly, I promise. And he'll let you wear his hat.

[identity profile] bugofjustice.livejournal.com
Hi, folks. Since we're on the verge of having a bunch of new students, teachers, and players, this is the perfect time to remind people of some organizational matters that are very important.

One of the most important things you need to take care of - and it's simple, don't worry - is your userinfo. It must contain accurate information so that people have quick facts and contact info at the click of that little head thingy that's right next your username.

All player journals - both new and old - should make sure they have the following in their userinfo:

Character Name:
Fandom:
Email Address:
Voicemail Link:
Living Arrangements:
(dorm room number or name of off-campus residence and roommates/housemates)

It doesn't have to be in that format. You can work some of it into a paragraph if you want, but the relevant information should be able to be located easily.

If you'd like to include a short blurb about your character, hitting the major bullet points about who they are, that is often very useful. It also may be a good idea to include information about your availability if you have any peculiar availability issues.

Students can - but are not required to - put up a list of classes, your schedule, your extra-curriculars, your job, and any other information about your character at Fandom High.

Faculty must also list what subjects they are teaching this semester, list office hours and provide links to your course requirements and syllabi. You're also encouraged to keep links to recent classes either in your userinfo or an OCD info post that you keep a handy link to, such as this.

Townies must also state their job and place of employment. Business owners should list their business details, including the name of the business, what services the business offers and opening hours.

One final thing unrelated to user info that we just want to mention right now: We have in the past had players who used the same journals in multiple RPGs. That's fine by us, but since the Fandom High game doesn't acknowledge canon from other games, any posts for other games should be filtered so they aren't viewed from Fandom High journals.

That's all for now, but we'll be throwing more OOC posts at you before the beginning of the semester. You haven't heard the last from us yet. :)

Thank you for your time.

Hello my freaky darlings!

So we have a plot coming up this weekend. It is for STUDENTS ONLY. Teachers and townies will have their day eventually, but this a last big Fandom High 'hurrah' for the students to finish off the academic year.

As of Saturday morning, all students wishing to participate in this plot will wake up and find themselves physically and mentally child-like. That is to say, when they wake up they shall be wee, tiny and aged in the single digits. Those students who are affected will remember who everyone is, but will look, think and act as if they are very young. Wacky hijinks ensue.

The wee!FH plot will last from Saturday morning until Monday morning. On Monday morning students will wake up back to their normal selves.

As this plot is run this weekend, it should not interfere with any classes or exams (unless you didn't study and have an exam and want to run with the "wah I screwed up!" idea).

Again, this plot is voluntary, but is for STUDENTS only. Any students that do not wish to participate do not have to. We're palming this off as one of those wacky things that seem to happen in Fandom.

A few notes:

Clothes - your clothes will change size with your body for the sake of supplies and logistics. The kiddies can change into big kids' clothes if you want, but to save us having to re-clothe a whole bunch of kids, when you wake up as a kid on Saturday morning your clothes will fit.

Knowledge - you will recognize the people around you. This is to make the plot wacky fun rather than emo. So rather than a whole bunch of kids wailing for their mommy, they'll know all of their friends and nice teacher peoples (whom I'm sure they will torment, especially that nice Professor Ms Rita Skeeter blonde lady because she just LOVES kids) and will have wacky wee adventures all weekend.

Adults - go, torment, have fun. If any of the adults don't want to be involved, find some way to simply avoid the kids. You're a creative bunch. You'll think of something. But if you want blackmail material, a good story to tell the parents on the next Parents Weekend or just a good belly laugh, feel free to get involved with looking after a few of the kidlets and dealing with tiny tots being around.

Ages - you can pick which age you want your kidlet to be, but keep it under the age of 10 to keep in the spirit of the plot.

Icons - yes, feel free to make icons of your wee!character. If you need any assistance finding a picture, ask around. Everyone's willing to help.

Above all else, HAVE FUN. Don't hesitate to ask any questions.

Hey folks,

We finally have some details for you about how summer semester will be run. Letting you know about it now, way, WAY in advance so you can make plans and whatnot.

Summer semester will be summer camp time. Details about Fandom Summer Camp are as follows.

The Basics
* Summer is long, so there will be two terms within the semester that are roughly equal in length.
* Summer semester is optional. You can choose to only attend term one, only attend term two or attend both. STUDENTS - if you do not attend one term, you must either put up an availability post stating that you'll be away or go off the island for the duration of that semester. Students cannot stay in Fandom and not attend summer camp.
* Summer camp will be based on school grounds and in the preserve behind campus.
* Rather than classes, workshops and activities will be run by both teachers and townies. The nature of these activities are pending (as we haven't asked what people are interested in taking yet), but they will definitely be more interaction based and possibly wacky rather than normal school-type classes.
* All participating students will be campers.
* All participating teachers will be camp counselor types.
* All participating townies will either be camp counselor types or will be involved somehow.

Dates
Summer Term 1
Week 1 - May 22-26
Week 2 - May 29-June 2
Week 3 - June 5-9
Week 4 - June 12-16
Week 5 - June 19-23
Week 6 - June 26-30
Week 7 - July 3-7

Summer Term 2
Week 1 - July 10-14
Week 2 - July 17-21
Week 3 - July 24-28
Week 4 - July 31-August 4
Week 5 - August 7-11
Week 6 - August 14-18
Week 7 - August 21-25

Then Fall semester will start on September 4.

New Students
There will be a new enrollment session some time in coming weeks. This will be open for students, teachers and townies, and current players will be allowed to apply with new characters. The characters that are accepted will be allowed to join in on the summer camp fun. New students will be required to participate in the whole semester (both terms). If there is a character you would like to play only for summer semester (with no intention of keeping them on when classes start again), talk to us. We are willing to discuss this on a case-by-case basis.

But It's OOC For Them To Stay...
If you need a reason for your character to be forced to stay behind, contact us here at the friendly FH Admin Stealth Ninja Squad and we'll be happy to work something out to assist you with torturing your character.

Sign Ups
There will be a post in coming weeks getting you to sign up for Term 1. There will then be a post for you to sign up for different activities/workshops for that term.

Going Home
If you wish for your character to go home/go off-island for summer semester (either term or both) and do other things, that's fine. Please keep in mind that you are expected to play the character you signed up with once you get back. If you intend on having them go home in an effort to incorporate new parts of your canon (ie: you broke away during Season 1 and you want to include stuff from Season 2), you will need to discuss that with us first. This is just to ensure that no one goes too far to the point where it will adversely affect other people in your fandom or to the point where you're playing a very different character to the one you signed up with. We're not going to be rabid about this. We just want to be fair to everyone.

More details will be forthcoming as soon as we work them out. Teachers and townies, please keep an eye out for a post in the next week detailing workshop/activity guidelines and asking for proposals from you guys. Again, this is a while off, but file the information away for later usage and start figuring out what you want to do over the summer. We'll try to be as accommodating as possible.

Fandom High Rules, Procedures, Etiquette Tips, Guidelines….

We’re working on an organized FAQ, RP Etiquette Guide and Complete Rules and Information section for the webpage, so this document contains a little of everything. These are the current rules and player guidelines for [livejournal.com profile] fandomhigh. If you can’t find an answer or clarification here, feel free to ask.

This list has been carefully put together through review of players and procedures from this and other games. We have discussed and considered every addition, clarification and modification carefully. This is a living document and subject to change. As such, each time it is changed you will be notified.

It is expected that you will add this to your favorites or your memories. These are all things which you, the player, are expected to be familiar with.

These are not new rules – merely the collation of the existing rules and administration posts into a single document for easier reference. We have been very lenient on some of these points, but some general abuses have forced us to take a stand.

Dear Players here at Fandom High:

Friday brought us several issues and your administration feels that a gentle reminder would be in order.

1. The cap on characters is four. That’s four total. Two students, one faculty and a townie. Two faculty, one student and a townie. Four townies….

Four.

If you have more than four, the administration will be asking you to please set up your extra characters for adoption. We have discussed this with several of you, and adoptions are currently in progress.

This also means that one character is allowed per enrollment. One. Once you have been accepted and have played for a term as either faculty or student, you may choose to offer a second character at the next enrollment. Please note that preference will be given at enrollment for new players… and that the December application acceptance is not open to current students/faculty unless you picked up a character through adoption. Then you will be allowed to submit an application.

2. Deleting your journal for any reason is a one-strike you’re out offense.

The logs in your journal, the responsibilities of your character, your responsibility as a player… all of these are removed, forcibly, when you delete your journal. It affects the other players and the game as a whole.

We will respect your decision to leave the game in this fashion by revoking your accesses, permanently. If you feel strongly enough to delete your journal, we feel strongly enough to remove your character.

There will be no negotiation on this topic.

3. Professor absences without prior arrangement, save in case of emergency, are unacceptable.

Faculty have been encouraged to find assistants or make arrangements for other professors to take their classes. It is allowable to make a notice that you’ll be gone for the week and to simply cancel classes, but we would greatly prefer that you find someone to hold your classes for you.

Simply disappearing, unless there is a true emergency, is unacceptable. If you are gone for more than a week without any sort of word, the administration reserves the right to replace you.

3a. Faculty without completed faculty information/application forms will be contacted on Monday and asked to rectify the situation.

4. The administration is here to serve you. Please allow them to do their job.

Any issue, large or small, can be addressed to the administrators. If they don’t know the answer, they will do their best to find out what it is or, as a last resort, consult and produce an official ruling on the issue if one does not exist.

We are here to be impartial. We are here to be fair. We are here to keep track of the trivia and the minutiae. We are here to make sure the game runs smoothly, not to take sides or make moral judgments. We are here to do the worrying and the agonizing so that you can concentrate on playing and having fun.

It is our job to keep track of the rules and the judgments. It is our job to say ‘yes’ or ‘no’. Please come to us for these things. Arbitration, the settling of disputes, the answering of questions… these are all a part of our job. These are the bailiwick of the administrator.

As a player, we would ask you to please not attempt to pass judgment on your fellow players. You can come to us, you can refer people with problems to us, you can ask us to make a ruling on an issue, you can bring your issues to us for consultation or just for an opinion.

As a player, it is not your job to step in and, if we feel your actions were unjustified, you will face disciplinary measures. Please bring your issues to us. That is what we are here for.

5. As to the above, please do not confuse In Character reactions with Out Of Character reactions or vice versa.

In Characters Actions result in In Character Consequences and these things must be worked out In Character. If this is not a condition that you are prepared to accept, it is probably a good idea to step away from the game.
