Hello folks! We are done with January, which means that like the last couple of years, it's almost time for some spring cleaning! In this instance, that involves alumniland. We know it can sometimes be tough to keep your characters active once they leave the island, and yet it's also hard to let them go, which sometimes leads to characters hanging around in limbo without active play but still unable to be picked up by anyone else.

In the spirit of cleaning things up, we would like to pare down the game's character list to those characters people still want to play. There is a rule in effect (laxly enforced, because see above about how we really do know this happens; it happens to us too) that essentially gives an alumni/expat character three months of absences until they are out of the game. The characters who have been MIA for three or more months are who we're looking at here, so no need to fret over those who just haven't gotten out recently!

So: all players have about a month from now to get their long-absent alumni characters active before we start sending out individual emails inquiring whether you still want to play the character and requesting that the character make an appearance IG if you do. If you get one of those emails, you still have another month from there for your character to make an appearance somewhere IG. This means you technically have two months from now to get your alumni active, and no characters are getting booted out without notice!

As always, please remember to link your activity to the appropriate post in the [livejournal.com profile] fh_alumni comm.

This doggie would like to give our grads who haven't told us their plans yet a gentle nudge towards this post, and also a really drippy lick to the nose.

If you don't know what your job will be yet or who you're TA-ing for, that's fine; you can always let us know that later, but we do need to know ASAP who's still going to be around for room-assigning and cabin space!

  • Teacher and student apps be clooooooosed, as are workshop applications from current teachers and townies! Thank you for your applications, and we'll be looking forward to an awesome new group of characters and classes as we review.

  • Graduation guest applications for seniors are due by this Wednesday, April 27th.

  • Summer Plans for all alumni and any students fleeing for any part of the summer are due by this Friday, April 29th. (Our apologies for the mis-typing on the last update list. Those fleeing will need to be off the island by May 6th, but we'll need to know the plans earlier so we can deal with roomies and such.)

  • Big Sib/Teaching Buddy sign ups AND sign-ups for New Roomies (for current students who want a random assignment) are due 5/3/11.

  • So is cake, because that's my birthday.

Deadline Reminders!

2. Workshops for Summer Session I are due from current teachers and townies by 4/23/11!
3. Big Sib/Teaching Buddy sign ups close 5/3/11.
4. Current Student Roommate Requests due 5/3/11.
5. Summer Plans for all alumni and any students fleeing for any part of the summer due 5/6/11.

Now, I will be over here, trying not to mourn the halfway point of my break.

In order to plan for the summer terms, we need to know what your plans are for your students. Graduates are welcome to stay for the summer as long as they either TA for a workshop (it's up to you to find a teacher to TA for) or if they have a job in town where they can continue to work (as long as there's a post of them at their job at least once a week).

Some things to keep in mind:

  • You can leave at the end the first term if you'd like (the beginning of July), or go home for the first term and come back for the second.
  • All students who are leaving before the summer terms (graduates who aren't sticking around, students who are going away for the summer, and students who are leaving the game or becoming expats) need to be off the island by Friday, May 6th.

All graduates will need to leave the island by the end of the second term (the end of August).

If you've got some summer plans that we need to know, please fill out the following information to let us know what you're planning:

If you're dropping a character entirely, please just shoot us an email about that one. We realize this is going up early but we wanted to give people plenty of time to plan things out. Don't worry, reminders will be going up sporadically as graduation and summer term inch closer. Please have plans in by Friday, April 29th at 11:59PM EST.

Quick announcement

Hi folks! We interrupt your kid-squeeing pleasure to note just FYI that this weekend is not blocked off for alumni visits, so if you're an alum or expat who has a kid with someone on-island, you're welcome to get a call and use some of your monthly visitation days to hang out for the weekend.

(If your alum/expat is on-island as someone's prom date, Prom/Friday itself doesn't count towards your five days. Any additional days would, if you decide to stick around.)
[identity profile] missed-the-gate.livejournal.com
So, ever noticed how we have this great population of alumni and ex-pats who so rarely get hand-engraved invitations back to visit their beloved Fandom Island? Meanwhile, a bunch of people are trapped all by their lonesome in their own dimension, living out fanfiction lives. Well, times, they are a'changing!

Effective immediately, no more do alumni/expats need to be invited or submit a proposal to stop by Fandom for lunch or even for a few days visit!

Announcement: DANCE!

Because we'd discussed running more on-island alumni and expatriate mingling activities, on Saturday, June 27th, Fandom High will be hosting a summer dance that will be open to everyone.

That's a big party, yes. The dance will be set for Saturday evening and the town will also host a brunch Sunday morning. Alumni/expats are invited into town starting Friday night, the 26th, and are expected to hit the road by Monday morning.

Starting today, characters can have handwavily received invitations to a weekend in Fandom. Students, teachers, and townies can also assume a handwavey announcement was made about the dance.

Just a reminder, if you haven't already, please let us know your plans for the summer if you are a graduating senior and/or have a student that's leaving the island for either for one of the summer terms or the entire summer!

We need this info by May 1 so we can get the cabins all planned out! Thank you!

Alumni Staying On

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008 10:11 pm
[identity profile] thankgoditsme.livejournal.com
Hello!

This is for this year's graduates (class of 2008). If you're already off island and not coming back for the rest of summer, ignore this, it doesn't apply to you.

If you're planning on leaving before the end of summer, you have to be off the island by July 13 at the latest.

If you're staying for the next term, you'll need to find either a TA position, steady job in town or work on the community project (one post a week, sign in). It is your responsibility to find a position for yourself. If you're TAing or getting a job, this will have to be organised by this Sunday. If you're working on the community project (the park redevelopment was last term's, for example), look for the post early next week and sign into it.

Easily done! If you do have any problems, feel free to email the admin team at administration@fandomhigh.net or comment here and someone will try to help you as soon as possible.

Once you know what you're doing and have confirmed your spot (TA or job) or decided to work on the project, please comment below to let us know. Thank you! (Oh, and no comment screening, so if it's sekrit, best email your plans)

Our 2008 Alumni

Greetings, Alumni!

As you'd all know, Friday was the last day for Alumni to stay on the island without being part of an approved project. Those of you who are TA'ing don't have to worry about this! (At least, not until next term, where you'll need to find a new TA'ship or join in the approved fun.)

An approved project is either a job in town, or the summer projects. The major one will kick off in a few weeks, but until then, it's park renovation time! The Fandom Town park will be getting something of a makeover - some new paths, new gardens, fountains, and maybe a little jetty into the lake. We won't be doing the whole park, so there will still be plenty of room to use it for parkish things in day to day gameplay.

Alumni need to ping into the project once a week to stay in the game. Those alumni who have jobs need to post them regularly to stay (alumni working in town will stay alumni, though, not become townies).

Regardless of whether they're working in town, working on the project, or TA'ing, the last day alumni can be on the island is August 28, 2008.

Hello alumni! This is directed at those alumni still in Fandom, but has some information for alumni off-island as well (and there's a note down the bottom for characters leaving for good).

Leaving Date: All alumni must be on their merry way and out of Fandom by August 31. Please keep in mind though that we'll be getting a stack of new characters around that time, so if you want your farewell to get some attention, make sure you consult the others still on weekenisland to stagger your departures.

Homecoming: All alumni are, as usual, welcome back in Fandom for Homecoming. You guys will be able to stay at the Arms Hotel or anywhere else in town. You'll be able to wander about on campus for that weekend, but not stay on campus. We'll have dates for that ASAP once we figure out the other key events for the semester.

Other Events: In addition to Homecoming, we'll be having a few more scheduled days where alumni can come back to Fandom for the day. Unless otherwise specified, the day will just be a single day, so the alumni coming to visit will have to be off the island by the following morning. Again, you'll be staying in town but will have access to the campus. You're welcome to try to be involved in plots on those days (dates pending), but please keep in mind that you may not be the only one wanting to run a plot then, some may clash with others and we might have to ask you to hold off until next time. The best way to avoid this is to get in early.

Leaving Characters: For all non-alumni characters leaving Fandom, you'll also need to be off-island by August 31 as the new semester starts the following Monday.

Thanks guys!

This is all going behind an LJ cut because it's damned long, but if you have an alumni character or even if you're just interested, please read through it. This is the official stance on alumni topics of interest and, even if it is a little belated, we're finally setting ground rules for the alumni community and the activities of its members. Hopefully this will clear a few things up and provide a structure for people to operate by.

It's a Way of Life )

Hello!
This post is largely for the current alumni and senior class and is a refresher and update for the guidelines regarding alumni characters in the Fandom High game.

Alumni characters are those who have been played out through to their graduation from Fandom High. As a result of this dedication, they are allowed to continue to participate in the game beyond their years at Fandom High.

Cut for length again, but please read! )

Thank you all for playing along with the Pleasantville event. Fandom has returned to "normal" and the third floor common room has a replacement television and remote while the other one is demystified.

Alumni, please enjoy your day of technicolor in Fandom.
[identity profile] bugofjustice.livejournal.com
Howdy, people! We have a Homecoming update for you.

The Homecoming dance will take place on Friday, October 6, as previously stated. Alumni will be able to visit from that morning through the evening of Sunday, October 8. They won't be allowed to stay in the dorms, so please be sure to make arrangements somewhere in town.

The Student Council will be organizing the dance and there's been talk of a carnival as well, just like last year. ICly, they'll be able to come up with any theme they want and plan towards that. What they won't know ICly is that we have a bit of crack set up that will make the IC ideas moot.

Early in the morning on October 6, Fandom will be made to represent Pleasantville. Everything will turn black & white, all clothes will turn into 1950's era stuff, NPCs will be extra cheerful, the dance will suit the setting, and everyone will think this to be completely normal. All characters will still act, speak, and think as they normally would with the exception of thinking the environment and clothes are normal.

This is an island-wide event and will magically affect your character as soon as they cross the Causeway (although everything will look normal from the mainland). You're free to get as into it as you want, creating B&W icons, Photoshopping 50's garb onto your icons, etc, or ignore all of that and just go with your normal icons while remembering the status quo for the weekend.

Things will go back to normal early Sunday morning, so the alumni will have one relatively sane day on the island.

This is a fairly low-impact event, but one that should add a nice atmosphere to Homecoming weekend.

Thank you for your time, and here's looking towards a fun Homecoming.

Homecoming

[identity profile] bugofjustice.livejournal.com
Fandom High's Homecoming Dance will take place on October 6. Alumni will be invited back for the weekend to catch up with all of the people they left in May. Or August. Obviously, some people will have more catching up to do than others. Visiting alumni will have to make rooming arrangements in town, of course, because they're filthy adults who have no business corrupting the poor, innocent souls in the dorms. I seem to be silly this morning. Apologies.

And just giving an early head's up, we do have an event planned for Homecoming (not an invasion, which could be a GREAT theme for the dance), but we need to flesh out the idea a bit more before we announce it. It should be fun, and if it's not, I ask that you lie to me and tell me that it was the best thing ever. But not in those words because I'll recognize that term and I'll know you're lying.

It's Saturday morning. You're lucky I'm not announcing this in the form of a limerick.

ETA: Oh, and the note in the office post means that the students are handwavily aware of Homecoming now. Alumni can handwave similar knowledge.

The time has finally come to say goodbye to last year's seniors. We'd like to give you all some time to be able to wrap things up and say goodbyes, and a date might actually help you do that. You can start leaving at any time, but the graduates have to leave the island before September 2. (And a reminder that more than a few people will be leaving, so it might help you to coordinate with them so there aren't three other other goodbye posts the day you want your character to make his/her exit.)

We're going to miss you guys. Don't forget to call and write from [livejournal.com profile] fh_alumni! *sniffle*

This is just a heads up to let you all know that [livejournal.com profile] fh_alumni is up and running.

Only graduates will be able to join the comm, but everyone is encouraged to friend it. This will be the place for graduates to keep in touch with current students & faculty.

The Graduate

This had to come up sooner or later -- Graduation. How we're handling it, how it involves you, and why being a Senior is a really really good idea for some.

Graduation is basically going to run like this: Seniors have a great year ruling the school, Seniors get the cap and gown. Seniors leave. If the player continues to play, they can pick up a new Freshman at the next enrollment period.

I'll repeat: Graduating characters will move on from the game. There will be very few, if any, exceptions to this, and that will be by admin invite, with no application process.

"Oh, my gosh," you say, "I have no desire to play a Senior now!"

Why not? Seniors rule the school. If we have enough Seniors, we'll be running some special, Seniors-only game events to appreciate their Senior-ness. At graduation, only Seniors will be allowed to bring in family members from outside the game (a la Parents Weekend). In essence, it's good to be the King.

Why This Is Ultimately a Good Thing:

High school is about change. It's about growing up. It's about moving on from old things and onto new. Fandom High is no different. Having graduating Seniors opens up a bevy of great plots to play, not only for the Seniors, but for the other classes who will eventually have to say *sniff* goodbye. Furthermore, it keeps the game fresh. By occasionally changing up the cast (for reasons that are actually based in RP and not player availability), we're able to explore new avenues of what growing up is all about. Which is what's fun here: watching these hormonal, semi-crazed hooligans turn into hormonal, fully-crazed members of society.

I know a lot of you are attached to your characters. I'm very attached to mine. But I'm more interested in really pushing the enviroment to its full potential, and graduation is a part of that push.
