Hello, Fandom! Hope you've had a cosy time lately, because we're heading into darker, deeper waters. (Metaphorically speaking. Mostly.)

From Tuesday, April 23rd until Saturday, April 27nd, Fandom will be under siege by a phenomenon inspired by the Dark Place from Alan Wake. (Inspired by, and with the numbers filed off, since the sequel canonized your mayor as part of the Alan Wake-verse, whoops. Do not feel beholden to any video game rules; what's relevant to this BDE will be provided, everything else is improv.) What is the Dark Place? Well, it's a nightmare realm that feeds on creativity - and makes creative works real, in increasingly twisty, bendy ways.

So what's this going to look like?

On Tuesday, April 23rd participating characters on Fandom wake up feeling a surge of creativity. It doesn't matter in what form: if you're inclined towards the written word, you suddenly find yourself caught by a story; if you're a crafts person, you may suddenly feel a deep desire to crochet an awesome penguin family, and so forth. You'll feel compelled to go with that urge, though not in a fully life-eaty way-- no skipping classes, but definitely using your free afternoon to sit down and finally paint that masterwork.

The next day, the surge of creativity continues - but creations also start to come to life. Your penguin starts talking and going for walks, or you round the corner and find that painting you did of the Devil's Nest as a giant Vegas Strip-style architectural marvel is now reality! Cool, right? Think fun and zany!

And then Thursday comes around, and the Dark Place begins to twist all creations to its personal favorite genre: horror. Creatures become destructive, newly-created places turn into dark labyrinths that try to swallow you up, and sometimes the shadows move and stalk you. Uh oh.

By Friday, the turn into a horror story is complete, with the Dark Place glomming on to particularly productive people and creating a shadow self from their worst nightmares. (That doesn't mean your character must be obsessively working, though there's definitely precedent for obsession and you're welcome to play with your character being sucked too far into the process to notice... anything else.) These shadow selves hold all your worst impulses and twist them into the shape of a horror movie antagonist. You can fight/defeat them at any point - they just have to be gone by the finale.

The finale? Fandom must yank creative control back from the Dark Place, and turn this horror story into an action piece.

So how far does this 'creativity becomes reality' thing go?

As far as you'd like! Owned buildings and characters are free game to tweak and change through creativity - we would like to ask you to put your name in under the OCD if you're planning to have a shadow self running amock, but otherwise, it's your canvas. Provided, of course, that everything does go dark by Thursday.

We do ask that if you want to change something about the island that you don't own - an existing public building, or adding a new place - you put in a request below. We'll get back to you and let you know if it's okay with us.

So how are we going to fix this?

Why, by our old and trusted processes: research. The Research Team will meet up at the library on Thursday to start figuring out what's going on, concluding in a Special Collections visit on Friday. The Special Collections visit will be preplayed.

Once research team has determined that the Dark Place is trying to tell a story - a horror story, to be exact - and that arc of the story can be bent, it's up to our two-pronged strike team to do the rest. One group will stay in the safety of Town Hall to rewrite the story to the best of their ability. The other will set out to make that story real - through no-holds barred combat against the Dark Place's creations in the Park, all played on Saturday. This should be more of a free-for-all and doesn't need to be preplayed, but we're willing to NPC individual threads beforehand on request.

Deadline is Friday, April 19th.

And that's it! Any questions, comments, etc? Let us know.

Hey, y'all!

We forgot to put the deadline in the post because we're new/out of practice at this, but please get your sign-ups in for the heist/finale portion of the BDE over here by tomorrow night! Don't miss your character's chance to burn down and/or break into a Walmart!

It's that time of year once again, folks! Yes, the spooky season, but it's more than just that. It's time for a BDE! A BDE where we’re gonna punch late-stage capitalism in the face.

Welcome to the invasion of the business-snatchers! Or, more accurately, the invasion of all brand names that push out small businesses with low prices and low wages. But fear not, Fandom will prevail! But first it'll be a little weird.

tl;dr down with capitalism )

Reminders!

Workshop ideas are due Sunday, April 23rd!

So are student and teacher applications!

The WereWhatever BDE goes from next Wednesday, April 26th until next Friday, April 28th!

Graduation is on Saturday, April 29th! Like we've done for the last few years, if you want to bring in NPC relatives/friends/acquaintances/archnemeses to cheer for you, go right ahead! And I just put up the post for your post-graduation plans! (If you want to drop a non-graduating character, that goes here.)

Hello, folks!

This is just your convenient heads' up that we are being invaded from Wednesday, April 26th through Friday, April 28th. Invaded by what? Well! Werebeasts!

A whole host of angry, tall, maul-y versions of animals you know and love, to be specific. On Wednesday morning, a massive werepanda will fall from a wrongly-scheduled portal, followed by a host of other weres. They will immediately do what were things do: attack things both living and not. Anything they scratch? Well, it becomes another were-thing!

The werebeasts will cause general havoc around the island as well, as with their rudimentary intelligence they may be tempted to start fires, steal food, and do property damage. Please do let us know below if you're planning to significantly damage a property in some way, but we are open to ideas. Werebeast attacks will get worse and worse as the days progress, until it's all out anarchy on Friday.

Okay, but does that mean I get to be a were-thing?
Absolutely! Anyone who gets scratched by any of the were creatures can pick something from this list*-- which is also, conveniently, the list of werebeasts you're likely to encounter. Your character will then transform into that creature for the duration of the plot, or until one of a few possible events occur.

* ignore all the other info on that page besides the list of possible werebeasts; it's not relevant to our BDE.

Events? Okay, so there's rules. What are the rules?
Werebeasts are stronger, taller, and meaner than their regular counterparts. They can't be killed. You can, however, fight one until it's incapacitated, in which case it will revert to its previous form, perfectly healed. It will then sleep eight to twelve hours, and turn back into a werebeast the next time the moon rises.

The beasts from the portal will turn into adorable dwarves when they're injured in such a way. Werebeasts of Fandom will turn back into themselves. But this is temporary.

If you want to turn someone back permanently before the end of the plot, you have to hunt down and incapacitate the werebeast that turned them. Once you do that, everyone the beast has scratched will turn back into their old selves.

And how do we get rid of them?
You can kind of guess where we're going... the werepanda is the progenitor of all the werebeasts. There will be a big fight between Fandom's finest and the werebeasts on Friday. You can sign up to be one of the folks who takes down the werepanda - depending on sign-ups, we'll pick two to three people via RNG for that final fight.

So there's no research component?
Well, not a specific one. You're encouraged to go do research whatever way you like, and try whatever werebeast cure you can find across the many dimensions Fandom has access to. They just won't work. You're also welcome to figure out the knock out the progenitor = end the curse part. If you do, feel free to bring it up at the town hall meeting on Friday morning.

It's the most wonderful time of the year...or is it? It could be both in the same week! Well, either way, you get an interesting exam week! Our Fall 2022 BDE goes from Wednesday, December 14 to Saturday, December 17.

A lovable (ish? If you squint?) Time Changing Jerkass named the Master from Doctor Who is coming to town! He's coming to mess with the timeline to own the libs for the lols because he would like to see the destruction of the human race. Since there are a lot of humans on Fandom Island who are pivot points of their own universes, this is like one-stop shopping for bad guys. Plus we've had a few Doctors here and he hates them. He's a crazy mastermind--definitely not the kind of dedicated jackass who would travel 106 years back in time, ingratiate himself into the Russian court, name himself Rasputin, all so he can capture the Doctor and have a dance scene set to a specific song, so ignore that linked video--who jumps all over time and space.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is not to defeat him (because that wouldn't undo the changes) but to travel back in time and fix the one thing that would set everybody right: stopping the Master from making the changes before he starts.

I am intrigued! How, pray tell, does the timeline change?
Pick a character from your canon or an FH character (with permission from the player, of course) to be your character's alternate parent, with all the changes to backstory, appearance, and powers that might entail. Imagine a world where, say, Rey's father was Obi-Wan Kenobi! Tony Stark's mother was Peggy Carter! Diego and Five Hargreeves' father was literally anyone else! Think how well-adjusted they'd be! Or you can go a different way and have Eric Northman make you a vampire: a very different form of fatherhood. Play that new-you character through the week, either in familiar situations or on BDE adventures. Some people might even be changed enough that they side with and help the Master. As always, you don't have to change your character, but if you are it has to happen on Wednesday. This isn't a rolling effect.

For example: starting December 14, Ingvar Island's father wasn't IKEA - it was Nemesis Island. Instead of creepy dolls, not!Ingvar (now Ingrid) sucks in canon nemeses of FH characters (for example, Anakin Skywalker v. Palpatine and not, say, v. sand) from across time, who will wander over to Fandom to attack or otherwise mess with the FH characters. The nemeses need a day to figure out boats, so they will show up on the island December 15th. The nemeses' invasion will backfire a bit because some of the FH characters are now AU versions of themselves and don't have the particular weakness their canon nemesis generally exploits. They might even like the nemesis now! Live out your weird hatefic dreams! You can have a nemesis even if you haven't made your character an AU version of themselves, and you can play them out of your own journal since finding icons has become...difficult. Sigh.

We just ask one thing: that each and every one of your nemeses has an improbable 1995 fashion statement on them. Maybe it's Oakley glasses! Maybe it's a baseball cap from the 1995 Coca Cola catalog. Maybe it's a t-shirt with Coolio's head on it. We're not gonna judge your nemesis, but pick something fun.

This small invasion twigs everyone to realize that the personality shifts aren't just Fandom Doing a Thing.

Cue the Research and Finale Teams!
We'll need people on Thursday to start researching. People were weird on Wednesday, there are random bad guys showing up and monologuing all over the place while looking like extras from a Green Day music video, it's the end of the semester...characters are genre-savvy enough to put some things together. It's the holidays, so exploring night-time ghostly interventions to make people have a change of heart would not be a bad place to start, nor would going through handwavy Fandom records and remembering Nemesis Island, where we defeating the bad guys in one-on-one combat. Looking into timeline divergence is a good idea, too. We'll RNG the person who'll get to point us towards the Master, so sign up in ye handy sign up section down below if you'd like that to be your character.

By Friday, we'll need science and engineering-minded people to try to build a time machine. As you do.

And on Saturday, we'll need a group of four characters to travel back in time, confront the Master, and set the timeline right again. Meanwhile, the rest of you get to deal with an invasion of highly punchable, highly moddable NPCs dressed like 90's extras - and your own nemeses again, if you'd prefer - from Ingrid island. The whole issue will be fixed by early Sunday evening, Fandom time. If you'd like to be on the finale team, please sign up by Sunday night for great RNG justice.

Once the timeline is restored, how does that affect everyone?
That's, again, up to you! If you would like your character to remember being Rosa's secret child, you can! If you want to have amnesia about all or some of the events, you can do that too! If you want to remember but DENY THAT YOU DO FOREVER, that's also a great option!

Ye Helpful Timeline:
Wednesday: AU Timeline Shenanigans! FH characters wake up with entirely different backstories! Enjoy explaining your lives to your friends/family/roommates!
Thursday: CUE THE NEMESES. Which...does not go as planned and only lasts an hour, give or take. They retreat back to the Not!Ingvar island where the Master tries to come up with a new plan. Meanwhile our characters can start realizing this isn't just an advent thing and start doing research. One lucky RNGed character will figure out that this isn't a Scrooge thing but is actually a Master thing.
Friday: ...does anyone know how to make a time machine? Let's meet in the library and do science!
Saturday: PULL THE LEVER, KRONK. Our elite team goes back to 1995 to stop the Master from getting this idea to begin with. Everyone else is busy punching bad 90s fashion! Balance is restored! Steve Rogers fucks off into the 1950s! ...wait. Wrong time traveling plot.

So, questions, comments, etc?

Well, folks, your fans have been submitted (and I loooooove them), you've done some plotting, and now it's time to sign yourself up for what you want to happen to your characters for the BDE!

If you know what you want to do with your characters, go ahead and ping them into the appropriate thread so those playing the fans can see what it is you want them to do and you can plot as needed. ((For clarification, you don't have to have direct interaction with a fan in order to have your characters start behaving weirdly on Thursday through Sunday. The power of handwave can also compel you!) If you're bringing a character back, killing someone off, pairing them up or doing something otherwise big, they need to be signed up.

If you don't know what to do with your characters, brainstorming is over here, go take advantage of it!

There's no deadline on signing up for this, just the fun of building anticipation!

Hello, all! You might have read the earlier BDE post and thought "I have ideas on how to be a fan!" Well, this is the post for you!

What we need are people who will be around and available to play from Wednesday, April 27th through Sunday, April 30th. Playing a fan means you have to create the journal, find a PB, and get your kid out there. These can be totally original characters, or you can base them off of something (ie, "that girl on Tumblr that hasn't stopped talking about Tom Hiddleston for a year straight", "the serial fic starter with 106 WIPs on AO3"; "the 'but actually' Redditor"; "the 'it's about ethics in gaming!!11!' Twitter troll; "the 'I've just showed up on the internet and all of these arguments are new to meeeee' Discord kid"; "the casual fan who thought they'd come to this convention to make friends but omg yikes"; "the Big Name Fan whose veeeeeeeeeeery specific kink warped how everyone watched this show for three seasons"; "the annual flouncer now on their fifth email name"; "the viral TikToker"; or our favorite, "the Fandom Old who is just. so. tired. of the discourse.") Just remember that these should not be canon characters.

Submit your application below, please! We're leaving them unlocked to encourage more of you to apply.

EDITED TO ADD: Please have your apps in by Sunday, April 24th!

Wayyyyy back in the dawn of time, aka Summer 2013, we had an invasion of Fandom High fans. For the last sixteen years, the radio station's signals have reached another dimension through handwavy handwavy magic stuff, and people have been watching our adventures, thinking it's just a television show that's been broadcast for their viewing pleasure. And some of the more die-hard fans have come to see Fandom in person on vacation--some are repeat offenders, even--and they will be OH. MY. GOD. SO! HAPPY! to meet all their favorite characters! (They think everyone in Fandom is a TV character. These fans are a little fuzzy on what's real and what's not sometimes.)

This will take place from Wednesday, April 27th to Sunday, May 1st.

For the first day, these fans will be available for interaction to get their squee all over your characters, annoy them by begging for pictures and spoilers and by showing them this fanfic they wrote about you, hope you don't mind it's a 200K WIP self-insert RPF! They also have to see if Summer's Jello shots are as amazing as advertised. On the second day, the fans will be gaining the ability to rewrite the "show" the way they want... which means that they'll be changing your characters' lives and situations all willy-nilly. They have Some Plans for ways to spice up graduation, too.

Things will go back to normal as of the finale on Sunday. Well. More or less.

Who's going to be playing these fans?
Well, you can! This is one of the few times you can play a non-AU kid original character at Fandom High. There will be a sign up post where you can get more info and submit a short app. Everyone is encouraged to become a fan (here's a link to the ones who caused problems last time, if you're unsure what we're looking for)! Chaos, after all, is the point.

It's happening at graduation? I wanted to bring in my senior's family!
Oh, they are absolutely still invited to show up the Friday before and will also be subject to the whims of the fans. There will be a slot for signing up your guests in the larger sign-up post.

What kinds of things are the fans allowed to do to our characters?
Pretty much anything you set your imaginations to. Remember, these people are coming in with a fan's perspective. So they can try to set up characters they want to be together (regardless of current pairing), send characters off on a bus out of town if they don't like them, set them up in an AU (so many coffee shops), turn them into a Mary Sue, whatever you feel comfortable with.

Keep in mind, these fans won't be doing anything to your characters without OOC permission.

What if I want to bring a character back?
Yay, you can! All former/dropped/retired characters are encouraged to be brought back, though you'll have to sign them up so we know who's coming.

What if I want my character killed off/sent away/put in an emocoma for four days?
That can also be done. Again, we'll ask you to sign them up for that so we know it's happening.

I have alumni and/or expats. How are they affected by this?
If your alumni are off island and you want them to stay there for the whole plot, they're not affected at all unless they talk to someone who's been changed, or who tells them about it. If you want the fans to bring them back into town randomly, you can do that too!

Will my character know their lives are being changed?
That's entirely up to you! The level of effect will be up to every individual player, and we can blame Fandom for why some people are affected and some aren't. So if, for example, the fans paired up two random characters:
--Both characters could be totally into it without realizing anything's wrong.
--Both characters could be together without having any idea how it happened.
--One could be totally into it while the other doesn't know how this happened.

How your characters react to the changes around the island is totally your decision. If you'd also like the fans to try and change your character and not have them affected by all, that's fine! Just work it out OOCly with someone playing a fan, and there's no need to sign up for that.

How will the fans know what I want from my character?
There will be a sign up post about a week from now. If you're planning to do something big (new pairings, deaths, bringing back old characters) we ask that you drop a comment in there to say what you're planning to do. This is also where you'll list graduation guests, seniors. This is so the fans can see what it is you want done and so things can be looked over by the admins in case any plots toe the line. If you want a specific fan to work their mojo, you can also work things out OOCly and preplay things, too.

Will my character remember this afterwards?
Yep! Everyone will have full memory of the events.

What if I want to keep something the fans changed?
That depends on what it is. If the fans pair up two characters and you decide you'd like to keep them together, or gave your character a job as part of a stripper AU or something, go for it! But anything that is given/taken away during the plot will go away as of Sunday. So if you made your character a millionaire, that money will be gone when the plot's done, etc.

If you have questions on whether something would be allowed, feel free to ask one of us!

I have no ideas!
That's not a question!

There'll be a place to brainstorm in this post. You can even ask for suggestions for your character in case anyone has any suggestions on what people would like to see from them.

Hello, folks! This is your catch-all post for any and all NPC requests for the long weekend. Let us know down here if you want just one to a few regular shooty cultists, or a Colt or a Julianna (outside the daily post for interacting with them).

We'll try to get to you as soon as we can. Modding for all the non-named NPCs is of course also totally cool.

Hello, Fandom! Thought we’d forgotten about your semesterly trauma rollicking fun event, had you?

This year’s BDE will take place from Friday, December 17th (you read that right) through Monday, December 20th in what we’d like to call "Let’s do the timewarp again!" but it’s really less of a warp and more of a loop. See, 2021 seems to be the year of time loop stories, and I don’t know about all of you, but the admin team also kind of feels like we’ve been reliving the same day over, and over, and over, and over again…

On Friday morning before classes, a piece of Blackreef Island will accidentally zip through time and space and wind up buried into the coast by the Abandoned Warehouse District. Specifically, it’s The Complex, an icy-cold section of an” already cold island that’s home to two mad scientists, Wenjie and Egor, and their various labs built into and under the island itself. Well. Right now it’s just home to Egor, as Wenjie accidentally launched herself into another AU entirely, but that’s a story for another day. Or possibly never.

Anyway, there’s a little problem with Blackreef: it repeats the same day over and over and over again. Egor and his small army of heavily armed, confused, aggressive and bemasked henchpeople, have volunteered to be there. They like living in a time loop. You can’t permanently die! You have so much fun! You… don’t know you’re in a time loop! Oops. No, it’s only interlopers Colt and Julianna - Blackreef Island’s former and current security chiefs - who remember.

And some of you guys, starting Friday. You get a never-ending last day of exams, and you get a never-ending last day of exams, and you get a never-ending last day of exams! This is not going to be as exciting to Fandom as it is to Egor’s people.

It’s up to Fandom to figure out why this little piece of Blackreef is stuck to our island and get it to go away, all the while dealing with your less-looped-in friends and family. Have fun!

So how does this time loop work? )

Hi folks! Just a quick reminder to sign up here if you'd like to help negotiate with the Trash King in our finale on Friday. I'm going to try to knock things into shape for it tomorrow, so sign up by tonight, please!

The other sign ups, for infiltration and battling, are head counts and have no deadline but "before we do the thing". (So Thursday and Friday, respectively!)

Hi folks! It's come to my attention that people are not sure what to have their characters do, either in the hole or on the surface. So I wanted to clarify real quick:

I am down with just about any investigation/escape attempts your characters want to try. Want to catch a raccoon? I'll NPC one, you just won't get useful answers out of them until the current preplay goes up next week. Want to build a trebuchet or try to use an explosion to blast your way out of the cavern? I mean, Travis will pout at you because he worries about explosions in enclosed spaces, but as a player I am all for it!

Please don't feel like you need to wait for me to prompt you, or like the things you try might screw up my plot. I specifically designed this sucker to be open and flexible, so you could bring whatever ideas you liked to the table and try them out. The only things I specify are:

1. On the surface: No one tries to go into the Trash King's compound on the preserve until Thursday, when I can block out space to NPC some lab raccoons for you -- if you want to find it and wonder and mention it to others, that's fine. It is tucked away and looks like a vaguely dumpster-shaped trash heap, though. The EPA would cry about this thing.

2. In the hole: You're not going to successfully make it all the way to the surface with your escape attempts. There's like 600 ft of solid rock between the cavern and the catacombs. It's just not gonna happen. (If you want to blast your way into a cavern full of goblins? I mean, I'd double check with the admins maybe about modding goblins living under Fandom, but otherwise I have no complaints!)

Other than a few specific threads in the finale, I really wanted this to be very player driven. If you have an idea for something and you're not sure if it would break the plot, I am happy to field questions! Either via email or Discord or with a comment here! I am almost always checking my email and am only a little less often at least keeping an eye on Discord. If you @ me, I'll see it and respond asap.

BDE Finale planning!

Hello, everyone who is in a hole and everyone who is not! We're about a week out now, so it's time to talk about our summer BDE finale!

It's pretty simple, really: you just have to find the Trash King and convince him to leave. He's just a raccoon! How hard can it be?

. . . Well, he's a raccoon with a king quadcopter. Which is a giant raccoon themed drone with a crown on it that spits exploding mines and concrete blocks. So, uh. Maybe a little bit hard.

On Sunday, July 11, one lucky raccoon will have earned enough points holing people (I bet he got bonuses for those canons!) to get a catapult attachment, meaning not only can he swallow things up, he can spit them back out! He'll have a grand old time with this, until Wednesday, July 14, when a team of investigators will manage to catch and interrogate him, and discover that the mastermind behind all this hole-y nonsense is hiding out in the preserve! (This is already being preplayed.)

On Thursday, July 15, a post will go up for anyone who wants to to go do recon, sneaking their way into the Trash King's compound, a giant dumpster made of scrap and trash, where raccoons are performing Important Trash Experiments . . . mostly involving trying to feed scraps of hole-d food to various hole-d wildlife -- though watch out, because they might just get holed themselves while they're in there! In town, planning will surely commence to launch a proper attack on the compound! And on Friday, July 16, the time will come to attack!

So I'm looking for a bunch of fight-happy people to take on the King Quadcopter outside the compound while a few wiley negotiators sneak in, find the Trash King, and convince him to leave Fandom alone already.

Then, Saturday, July 17, that handy-dandy catapult function will be used to launch all those in the hole back up to the surface, along with all their chaotically mixed up worldly goods! The Trash King will move on to greener, less canny pastures, and Fandom can get to what it does best: cynically recovering from bizarre trauma and rebuilding.

Sign up below for our fight team and negotiators! And a headcount for infiltrators, so I know whether I need to recruit anyone to assist in NPCing lab raccoons. . . .

Hey folks, just a reminder that our summer BDE begins this Sunday aaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Signups/brainstorming happens here. No official deadlines on the headcounts for the hole or investigation crews, since those will be mostly self-directed, but I'm going to say the deadline for RNG of raccoon investigation is next Sunday (July 4), so we can preplay if we need to.

Oh and also, we could definitely use more folks falling into the hole in week two! So far we've got five people for week one, three for week two, and three for week three. Feel free to either switch your week or sign more folks up!

It's tiiiiii-iiiiime!

That's right, folks, this summer's BDE is coming up! And this time, we're taking a page from a cute little video game, Donut County! From June 27 to July 17, get ready for Fandom to be invaded . . . by holes!

You see, the raccoons running the brewery have done such a good job that they've drawn the attention of the Trash King, the self-appointed king of all raccoons. He'll be arriving on MonSunday, June 27, and opening a brand new donut delivery service to capitalize on all us Fandomites. Order a donut and one will be delivered right to you! A delicious, freshly baked tasty treat!

Or possibly a physics-breaking hole that swallows up you and all your worldly goods. Definitely one of those two things!

How the holes work )

The timeline )

But what about the people who get sucked in? )

Holes will be moddable, or played out through [personal profile] trashiestking by myself and/or a volunteer. Please let me know when signing up if you think you'd like to have the hole NPC'd — you can change your mind later either way, but it's nice to get a heads up!

ETA sign ups for the raccoon interrogation will close on Sunday, July 4. All other sign ups are open ended, as they're generally self-directed.

Hello, Fandom!

We're here with an update on the details for your upcoming BDE, which starts Monday, April 26th. Now that classes are over, an evil crystalline creature will strike the school's tower and take up shop within the castle unnoticed.

On Monday morning, you all wake up with a strange feeling of dread... )

Questions? Concerns? Something to keep me awake for the last half hour of my shift?

Hello, Fandom!

We interrupt your sex pollen week for an early announcement that we will be having our BDE from April 26th through to April 30th this year -- and we need your help.

Starting that Monday, Fandom will transform into a nightmarescape with the castle as its evil beating heart. But these nightmares won't be entirely generic - they'll be based on the collective subconscious of the island. Your greatest nightmares and fears will blend together into a dark whole, forcing a sense of helplessness over the island that goes hand-in-hand with a sapping of your power to fight back against it.

But to shape that nightmarescape, we need to know what that collective subconscious looks like. We're not talking about specific memories or terrors from your past; we won't be giving you visions of that terrifying Snuffleupagus that almost destroyed your body and soul during that trip to Tijuana that one time.

Instead, we're looking to reshape the island physically, somewhat in the vein of the video game that inspired this BDE. One man's fear of abandonment and one woman's fear of losing her family's minds to conspiracy theories might come together to form televisions that turn people into mindless zombies. A fear of swimming and a fear of monsters in the dark? There's now an evil tentacle monster living in the duck pond.

And so on, and so forth. It doesn't have to be two fears coming together - it can be three, or four, or even just one. We're opening up this post for you guys to toss in your character's fears, but also hopefully to get you guys to brainstorm together a bit and come up with cool options for us to help shape the island with. So: ideas! Let loose!

Note that putting your idea out here does not mean we absolutely will use it, but we'll be doing our best to incorporate as much as possible into a layout for the island for BDE week.

Hello, Fandom!

Have you signed up for a team yet? You've got until Tuesday!

As you all might have guessed at this point, Fandom Advent has gone a bit off the rails. Someone has co-opted the season by launching a weather satellite into Fandom skies, and after a week of charging up, it's about to start UNLOADING on the island on Monday morning. Beginning with the clouds rolling in, so it's not easy to find...

Research team, your job will be to determine the satellite is there at all, figure out its position, and deactivate it. Some of you will be receiving hints about how to do this, but we're keeping things open enough for creative ways to blast the damn thing out of the sky. There will be a post on Saturday in which you can play out this blasting to your heart's content; clues will be deployed starting Wednesday, but Town Hall will be open for your researching needs (dive into those archives!) as of Tuesday and Jesse will be there to do any herding and guiding.

Strike team! Bears are cute, right? Especially advent bears! Well, not these bears. As the weather satellite spins completely out of control on Saturday, MASSIVE bears will attack. A giant one half the size of the school will lead the charge, and slightly smaller ones will defend it. Stop it, before it smashes the school entirely! ... watch out for those mind-controlling attack reindeer, too. There will be a preplay for 'this is everyone grouping up for their Avengers moment' and 'this is where we defeat the big bear' purposes, all fighty in the middle will be liveplay.

So what's this advent going to look like?
I'm glad you asked! Here, have your events list. All of these events stack - so by Saturday, you'll have sharkicanes and snow angels messing up your day on top of all the bears. Fun, right?

MONDAY THE 14TH
- Sharkicanes attack! No, it's not a hurricane of shark this time, it's candy canes that traverse the newly-laid snow on the island like shark fins and attempt to drag people into the snowbanks to drown them.
- Powdered sugar falls from the sky periodically, turning characters flighty and childlike for a minute or so when it touches them.

TUESDAY THE 15TH
- Rock-candy icicles: which are delicious, but about as dangerous as real icicles if they're falling from the sky. Which they are.
- Marzipan boulders rolling around the island, obstructing stairs and traffic.

WEDNESDAY THE 16TH
- Snow angels attack! These angels resemble the Weeping Angels in their looks and movement pattern - they can only sneak up on you if you're not looking at them. If they're in your face, however, they start to attack -- with their claws and their fangs. Ever been hit by really dense ice? Ow.
- Rivers of lava-heated chocolate spring up left and right, cutting through the snow.

THURSDAY THE 17TH
- Lights slither across Fandom's streets, trying to strangle you - or drag you to some really mean, pointy holly wreaths.
- The mistletoe is back! But instead of stalking you until you kiss anyone, it hollers abuse at you.

FRIDAY THE 18TH
- Attack of the inflatables! Inflatable decorations spawn on the island and/or come to life if you've got any, with flesh as solid as any creature despite their looks, and they won't stop until they devour you whole.
- Fruitcakes appear outside your door, but they're brick-like and can't be moved. Don't trip, guys.

SATURDAY THE 19TH
- FINALE DAY! An earthquake rocks the island... and reveals a massive bear, eyes glowing red and attacking everyone. He's brought friends. And a bottle of off-brand soda.
- Evil reindeer rush through the streets, using their red noses to turn people into their thralls! ... Mind you, they're reindeer, so they'll probably just use you to find them food. Or attack people attacking them.

Hello, Fandom!

We're here to announce your Winter BDE 2020! It'll run from December 14th to December 19th. And we're not telling you what it is. Yet. Let's just say the island will be a moderately chaotic place losing its mind to holiday bliss in a slightly different way than usual. ... and last year.

What we are telling you is that we'll need a team of crack scientists and magicians to go camp out at Town Hall, or poke around their own workspaces to unveil, study and destroy a device causing havoc on the island. And we're also going to need a bunch of volunteers who are willing to fight something really big and fuzzy while they work on Saturday the 19th.

Everything else? Well, you'll find out next Saturday.

Now, here's your Fandom Advent for the week...

Monday, December 7th - One single rickshaw is covered in Christmas lights and chugs slowly through the streets.
Tuesday, December 8th - You wake up and there's a cookie on your pillow.
Wednesday, December 9th - Someone has left discarded Santa hats in your closet. They disappear when you try to put them on.
Thursday, December 10th - A reindeer is squatting on your roof. It won't leave. (Until the next day, of course.)
Friday, December 11th - Nothing seems to be happening? Except when you listen very carefully, something in your kitchen seems to be gently humming 'Carol of the Bells'.
Saturday, December 12th - Today's weather report predicts a small sprinkling of chocolate in the early afternoon.
Sunday, December 13th - Is that mulled wine coming out of your tap, or just bad grape soda? It tastes like bad grape soda.

Let us know down here what you're looking for, or what you're thinking about doing. Need someone to join you in terrible memory swapping (that's one hell of a potential meet cute)? Need someone to fill your heart with liiiiiight? Have a few possible scenarios you want to play with but you're not sure who might be up for what with whom?

Well, that's what this post is for.

Hello, Fandom!

It's time for your summer BDE! From August 19th through August 22nd, we are getting invaded by... *drumroll* NIGHT MARES.

... or, well, a radical offshoot of those Night Mares. They will sneak into Fandom early in the morning of Wednesday August 19th, taking up residence in the dark shadows of every home. They're here to feed on your deepest, darkest memories. They'll be weak, at first, coaxing nightmares from the denizens of Fandom in order to suck up that lovely terrible energy.

With time, they'll get stronger, drawing up bad memories even in the daytime hours - provided they can stay in the shadows, as they are allergic to light. And then come the weekend, the rain clouds come in...

More details under the cut! )

And that's really all there is to it. Questions? Comments? Leave them under this post.

Sign up over here by tonight for current characters to get kidnapped/NPCs to submit as newbies to get kidnapped for our lovely BDE that will start on Saturday.

Class sign-ups end on Friday night (over here) and it's super fine to have a head-canon using them for what your NPCs would be taking/teaching!

And in this post, please let us know if you're non-kidnapped student/teacher would be up for getting paired with an NPC that will not arrive for great "stuff to worry about at the picnic" justice!
heroic_jawline: (neu: gotta love a man in uniform)

So there's good news and bad news. The good news is that the trainwreck of a shitstorm of a 2019 is over in two days. The bad news is that it has collectively sucked all of our brains so hard that we didn't have any new applications for the Spring 2020 session.

But we can work with that through our BDE! It turns out that we didn't just bring back an amazing collection of gluhwein mugs from our trip to Cologne: we also brought back a stowaway Krampus, the terrifying half-goat, half-demon coin flip of Jolly Ol' Saint Nick. He, if you aren't familiar with the legend, steals bad children (and townies and teachers) and takes them off to his lair to do various and vague nefarious things to them. He has also 'napped all of new students and teachers for the semester, so no one new will actually be showing up for the welcome picnic -- which is how will we kick off our BDE.

The timeline:
--The welcome picnic will continue as scheduled on Saturday, January 4th. We are looking for a few volunteers to be Big Siblings and Teaching Buddies whose siblings/buddies never arrive, as well as people who would like to invent and NPC a few new students/teachers for the event, kind of like you would for a Parents Weekend event (so please check in with people you'd be canon sharing with, however brief). The NPC students and teachers will finish the event, nope out hard from attending FH this semester, and disappear back into the multiverse. We also need a few PC volunteers to be kidnapped from the welcome picnic and join our NPC newbies and their extremely disgruntled bus driver. Krampus might also be spotted around town on that Saturday but would be written off as a new, extremely terrifying looking, teacher.

Fandom herself is doing a Random Event for the day of the welcome picnic, with presents appearing all over the place as a late gift for the new people who weren't there at Christmas. For non-kidnappees, the gifts just contain useful stuff like hair dryers, alarm clocks, bath products, desk lamps, etc, all things that students or teachers might need. For kidnappees that don't get grabbed by Krampus directly, they contain a creepy evil toy that drags them into the gift box, which contains a hellish portal straight to Krampus' sack. We'll contact the kidnappees to find out their preferences on getting 'napped.

--By the next day, people can definitely notice that we got smaller rather than larger following the welcome picnic and volunteers may assemble to try to figure out What's Wrong This Time, Dangit. The kidnappees and the NPCs will also get a chance to chat amongst themselves and try to come up with an escape plan from where Krampus has stuffed them: in the caldera of Ingvar's volcano. (Spoiler alert, their plan won't work.)

--By Monday, January 6th, researchers have found an ancient ritual of peace and hope at Yuletide that miiiight either banish Krampus or convince him the island's inhabitants have the Spirit of Christmas and carry it with them even though it's technically past December 25th. (We'll pick a Very Lucky Researcher to discover what this is.)

--On Tuesday, January 7th, we Attempt the Ritual. And that really ought to work, but not everybody is ever going to be wholehearted about it, and some people aren't Christian and could rightfully be annoyed by the whole Christmas is Not A Secular Holiday To People Of Other Religions Who Get It Shoved In Their Faces thing, and some people are aliens and Don't Get Christmas, and some people are disillusioned because life happens, blahblahblah. So Krampus is kranky and sends out his army of creepy evil toys to destroy us. Because Fandom is super excited to see evil toys again. Freaking 2019.

The good part of the fight: it's super obvious that the toys are coming from Ingvar, so we know where to go to rescue our friends! Plus Ingvar, who is now a toddler and was just trying to Get Into the Spirit of Christmas, Okay, is also annoyed by his new friend being not as nice as he'd thought and will help us (well, "help") with his own army of misfit creepy dolls and stuff. Thanks? Sorta? Ingvar? Together, Ingvar's toys and our fighters will free the NPCs and the kidnapped characters, and be Fully Done With Christmas, Thanks Ever So.

Questions? Comments? Really great ideas for NPCs to get kidnapped? Please sign up by Thursday, January 2nd!

Well, the antics of Team Ill-Fated Computer Repair sure have stirred up the hive - enough that they have made a crucial error and informed the island when the group is getting brought to the Junkyard and that, friends? That gives the island enough time to plan.

Friday
As was mentioned in the previous writeup, Friday is for planning and preparation.

Bad guys!
You're all going to be on high-alert right now. There is proof of a vast conspiracy on the island and it came scarily close to causing some real damage. Now is not the time to be subtle! Loom. Intimidate. Make it as hard as possible for these rebels to get anywhere. They must be stopped!

Rebels!
This is time for you to go for broke. The island has been sabotaged and Kitty has the only clue, an empty nesting doll. Your friends are getting dragged off to the Junkyard on Saturday, so that only gives you about twenty-four hours to plan a daring escape for them. While the Daring Escape itself will take place on Saturday in the Junkyard, that doesn't mean that we don't have time for a few crackpot ideas on Friday, too. Stockpile weapons, make grandiose plans, plot ambushes - however your character would get ready for a guerrilla battle is a-okay. Maybe you wanna do a bit of counter-espionage on the bad guys. Check in with people, make plans, have fun with this.

Folks who have been given items to find, Friday is the day to do it! Make posts, you can either find them by fiat, or involve other people. Bad guys, show up and heckle, try to figure out what they're doing.

A (bad guy free) post will go up Friday afternoon for everyone to bring what they've collected and try to figure out what next.

Saturday
At high noon, the doors of the Toybox will open and the members of Team Ill-Fated Computer Repair will begin their walk down to the Junkyard. That gives your characters plenty of time to set up and make preparations for the storming of the Bastille Junkyard. Bad guys, you get to join on the walk, and fight in the big brawl once it's joined!

Here, pretty much anything goes. You know all those cool plans you came up with on Friday? Put them into action today! Tear down Car Crusher and Junk Biter! Fight the oppressive police state! Rescue your friends and show the Toymaker that you're not puppets! Even if some of you are, literally, puppets!

You'll have to take down the Toymaker and maybe, if you're really, really lucky, you'll rescue more than you bargained for, too.

At the same time, the strike team will be down trying to fix the mechanism below. They already have their instructions, except for one last thing...

Because, you see, even when the Toymaker's control is broken, the island has gotten so turned around all summer that she's not going to know quite how to get home. So once the strike team finishes draining the Toymaker's power away, some of the equipment is going to punch up through to the surface - conveniently, right in the middle of the Junkyard, where everyone else is going to be fighting.

There, everybody needs to help calibrate the island by reaching out to the sensors and focusing on a memory they have of the island. A good memory, clear and pure, where they were happy. With everybody inputting their memories and good feelings (don't worry, you don't lose them!), the island will be able to break out of that AU pocketverse and finally find her way home.

Once Fandom breaks out of the pocketverse, indoctrinated characters can come back to their right minds and dropped characters will vanish from the island. You'll all arrive home, where Causeways and portals work again and the island will think really hard and really long before taking another vacation ever again.

It will probably come as a terrific shock to you, but there's a reason the island hasn't been able to make it home. You see, once upon a time, long, long ago, in a galaxy very much like this one, there was once an entity named...The Celestial Toymaker, aka "The Way Ingvar Gets All His Creepy, Evil Toys." Fandom Island has tangled with him before - back when he kidnapped people from the island and made them wander through his creepy living dungeon full rooms stolen from alternate realities.

Looks like he's still up to his old tricks. Only this time, rather than kidnapping people, he's kidnapped the whole damn island.

Hello, Fandom!

On April 29th, it’s time again for our Spring BDE! Yep, everyone is going to wake up on Tuesday morning to find out that a shield has appeared around Fandom, blocking off the Causeway. OH NO! What danger awaits us?

… nothing is going to happen. In fact, portals off the island will work just fine. Two intrepid Fandomites will examine the barrier and find out it’s a protective spell meant to keep bad things out, not good people in. Once that spell is broken, the shield will give way to reveal…

...that vampires have overrun Baltimore. )

And now: sign-ups! Please make sure to get yours in by Friday, April 27th!

Greetings and salutations! The end of the semester is nigh, bringing with it thoughts of holiday treats, strange polar bears handing out sodas, and the BDE! This year we're bringing back a foe we haven't faced since the dawn of time Winter of 2006: SNOW MONSTERS!

They're bigger, they're badder, they are really unhappy about global warming!

...and they still bear an uncanny resemblance to Calvin and Hobbes' snowmen.

Here's how it'll play out:

Wednesday, December 19: A blizzard comes into Fandom, knocking out regular power supplies due to the heavy snow and winds. Smartypants with generators feel smug, the community center and school spontaneously generate fireplaces for coziness/not freezing to death for those without generators to slumber party it up. In the heavy snow of the blizzard, the arrival of a Giant Glacier of Doom, snapped off from the Arctic due to climate change and floating over by Ingvar, goes relatively unnoticed.
Thursday, December 20: It is still blizzarding. This is clearly not an Advent calendar shenanigan, and also it's flipping cold outside. The generators owned by the smartypants start being destroyed by *dun-dun-dun* snoooooow monsters, brought to Fandom via the Giant Glacier of Doom. The monsters are only appearing in singles/pairs for now, and can be modded for your fighty needs. You can also ask a friendly neighborhood mod to play a fight sequence out with you. The Glacier of Doom can also be seen through the snow, along with the snow monsters on it practicing their dance moves, carrying placards protesting global warming, and plotting to kill us all.
Friday, December 21: The blizzard has finally stopped but there is now a good two feet of snow on the ground, with drifts that can completely cover doorways. It's really tough to get around unless you are a snow monster. The snow monsters are tooootally ready to get you if you pop out of the few places that are warm, and are now running around in larger gangs of five-to-ten. Clearly they've got to go. Plotting to get rid of them commences!
Saturday, December 22: Big fighty/protest/dance scenes in town and outside the school walls. Research teams get together to combine their amazing/ridiculous ideas and send what monsters remain--but more importantly, the glacier--away. And then there's hot cocoa.

How can snow monsters hurt my character?

They're made of snow and ice, so think concussions, broken bones, and puncture wounds from icicles. If your character gets knocked out and left in the snow, exposure could also be a problem.

How do we beat them?!

Well, they're made of snow, so they melt. Coffee, hot water, lightsabers, battery-powered hair dryer, peeing on them (WE REMEMBER YOU, OLD SHEP), are all effective, but the monsters can re-form a few minutes later as long as there's still snow around. Making sure they're all gone means getting rid of the glacier itself, but we can't melt it down completely because that would raise the level of the ocean too much.

To mix this up, we've decided to try out two research groups--one centered in town and one in the school since getting between the two areas is going to be tough--to brainstorm solutions. We have a few ideas as back-ups, but we wanted to see what you crazy people came up with on your own. We'll limit the research groups to four characters each for ease of conversation/coding and will RNG it on Sunday, December 16 if we get more volunteers than we need. We've also added a brainstorming OOC thread down here for those who have amazing ideas but not necessarily a character who could pull them off.

Since we're close to Christmas and the New Year, this is going to be a pretty light, fun event where you can get as involved as your RL lets you. We will be preplaying the glacier removal, but everything else will be live!

Questions, comments, funny stories?

BDE: Into The Woods

Hello, Fandom!

Time goes fast, doesn't it? It definitely feels that way, because your summer BDE will be happening from Friday, August 10th through Sunday, August 12th! Specifically, the afternoon of Friday, August 10th, when the unexplored wooded area will be cloaked in shadow, impenetrable, and draw to it unwitting Fandomites...

Yep, some of you are getting lost in the woods! On Friday Afternoon, Saturday Morning and Sunday Morning, a spell will come over various Fandomites that will drive them to walk into the woods. There, they'll become trapped, sapped of powers, with the ghosts of sins past that roam in the dark. OooooOOOooooooh...

Well... ghosts of sins past...

Specifically, they'll come face to face with the ghostly reenactments of terrible things seen by inanimate objects (anything that can be reasonably anthropomorphised) in their lives before Fandom: that whale-headed coatrack in the hall of your childhood home, perhaps, or that one plush toy you had when you were ten that just didn't seem right... ... effigies of which are also roaming the woods, attacking people left and right. ETA: Or as I put it later today, "... basically objects are taking your characters to account through ghostly apparitions/replays and attacks by giant versions of those objects, and what crimes they're upset about and how they do that is otherwise up to you."

In order to save their friends, the rest of Fandom must band together, find their way into the forest, and defeat the evil that lies within the woods.

Check out the descriptions in the OCD below, and tell us if you have any questions!

Hello! We interrupt your regularly scheduled Wednesday to bring you important news: this spring's BDE!

Have you ever gone out with some friends for a night on the town, looked at your beverage for the evening, and thought to yourself "this would be way more fun if this drink gave me superpowers"? Well you're in luck. On Fandom, from April 19-22, that's just what those fun social cocktails are going to do. Which is good, because cocktail superpowers will be the only things that can get rid of the evil, soul-eating monsters.

The basic rundown )

Cocktails )

Tremens )

But my character can't have alcohol/drink liquids at all )

Coffee )

tl;dr

From the night of Thursday, April 19 through the evening of Sunday, April 22, cocktails in Fandom will give you superpowers. Which you can use to fight off evil monsters. Coffee will heal you up afterwards.

There are a few headcounts/sign ups below, and of course, ask me all of your questions! Sign ups will be open until 11:59 pm PST Wednesday, April 18th.

Hey, Fandom! It's that time of the season again! From Thursday, the 14 of December to Sunday, the 17th, last year's End of the World AU is coming back - in reverse!

Sure, Monster Zoe's been destroyed, and the future island reattached to the rest of the world - but as it turns out, the rest of the world also lies in ashes. (Albeit a little less full of giant crazy monster-bosses). A tough sell for a people already beaten down and broken - and some of them have snapped. Certain of the world's inevitable doom, they construct a cobbled-together time-machine to return to Fandom and bring the world to a quicker, more merciful end.

A day later, fellow AU-ites with a more optimistic view of the world will find out about their plans and follow them to Fandom, in an effort to stop them from summoning a nameless horror from the depths. But by then, AU-folk-gone-cult will have unleashed a sickness onto the island that can turn the locals into gibbering, cultish accomplices - and started the ritual to unleash the beast from the sea.

So what kind of AU characters can I app for this?

Whether you go for Camp Cult or Camp Save The World, you can app an AU counterpart for any character you play or have played in the past. Yes, even if you didn't play in this AU before. Yes, even if you're not an active player at the moment. Everyone is welcome.

All of the AU characters are still hollowing, slowly losing their memories over time, but that's a gradual process. They can be as far along in it as you want, provided they still have enough consciousness to make decisions. Like jumping into a portal across time and space.

Evil AU people are encouraged to try to fly under the radar as long as possible, to avoid their plan being found out - even if their good islandmates are spilling the beans on day two.

And what about our regular characters?

They can stay regular, or they can be affected by the plague the eeeeevil AU-ites bring with them. That'll cause a slow process of being susceptible to suggestion on day 1, to being fully crazy and all-in on the summoning-the-Eldritch-from-the-deep on day 4. They can start changing on any day of the BDE, and will be cured by the end.

What else do you need?

We'll need a research team to start research on Friday into a way to disrupt the ritual, and a strike team to take out the summoners on Sunday. That will be preplayed, unless everyone who signs up prefers liveplay.

ETA: What if my character is dead in the AU?

The cultists got some practice in before ascending to Eldritch-summoning - and they brought some of the dead back with them.

Those restored dead function mostly the same as the living do, but they can be controlled by evil AU cultists because of the ritual (ie, they can be commanded to do things). So any formerly dead person who comes back will either have to avoid the cultists, or wind up doing their bidding.

The deadline for sign-ups is Monday, December 11th. OCD up!

SHARKICANE! Because Sharknados are so 2013.

A long time ago on an island not so far away, Jeff, the God of Biscuits, really wanted to open a bakery in Fandom but he was short on the cash he needed. Naturally, he went to another, less minor, god for a loan to cover the difference.

...he chose Eshu, the Nigerian mischief god. Jeff: great at baked goods, not so great on noticing when choices will come around to bite him later. Eshu decided to lose the loan in a card game transfer the debt to a group of actual loan sharks because it'll be hilarious. He's sitting off on the sidelines with popcorn, and Fandom will get to deal with SHARKICANE: THE MORE METEOROLOGICALLY PLAUSIBLE DISASTER FOR THE EAST COAST.

Rolls right off the tongue, huh?

So how will this work?

At the beginning of the week and entirely unrelated (probably. Jeff owes some weather gods money too), a hurricane will begin to develop in the Atlantic.

On Thursday, August 3, the loan sharks will pay a visit to Jeff, and make him an offer he can't refuse: pay the interest of his loan or get eaten on Saturday. They gave him a couple days, y'know? They didn't have to do that. It's also announced that the hurricane will make landfall on Saturday, so everyone is encouraged to buy flashlights and candles, non-perishable food, and toilet paper because it's not a disaster if you haven't bought toilet paper.

On Friday, August 4, the loan sharks' enforcer sharks begin circling the island, catcalling Jeff and making generally terrible fish puns. Winds start kicking up on the island and it begins to rain. The waves on the shore get more menacing.

On Saturday, August 5, against most known rules of non-Sharknado physics, the hurricane scoops up the sharks and begins dropping them--and a ton of rain and wind--onto the island. Yes, they can crash through your house! Yes, they can swim in the lake! Yes, you can kill them with chainsaws!

...and yes, they knock out the power for all of your cuddling-in-the-dark-and-missing-air-conditioning shenanigans.

On Sunday, August 6, a group of heroic Fandomites will test an Extremely Good Theory of Hurricane Dissipation. Namely, dropping a huge ice cube (or a few dozen frozen sharks…) into the eye of the hurricane. Is this a terrible idea? Very likely! Has this ever stopped anyone on this island? NOPE. While our heroes/heroines are doing this, the winds are still blowing, the rain is still coming down, and the sharks are still eating NPCs you don't like and wreaking havoc on the teal deer and alot populations.

What do we need from you?

--We need nerdy volunteers to discover the theory that giant ice cubes can destroy hurricanes, and volunteers to fly into a shark-ladened hurricane and chuck frozen sharks into it. We also need people who can figure out how to freeze sharks.

--We need business owners/homeowners to volunteer their places up for storm/shark damage.

--We need at least one person to kill a shark with a chainsaw.

So! Questions, comments, amazing fish puns?

Salutations, Fandom! We promised you more details about the BDE, and lo and behold, we bring you details

DAY ONE: The island wakes up and finds that the mainland is gone. Any kind of mainland. The expanse around them is all ocean, and mobile phones and the internet have stopped working. By afternoon, tremors are hitting the island.

Reason for concern, right?

Of course, rooting out the tremors will reveal that there's a smallish infestation of giant easter bunnies - about the size of a house - in the park, and every time they jump, it shakes the island. Oops. Research team? Hit the books!

DAY TWO: The research team has been hitting the books. They figure out something has gone totally wrong downstairs, and root out a way to fix it.

Meanwhile, the amount of crazy animals on the island has exploded. What will you see - and probably have to fight, they're all aggressive - on the island? Jackalopes, snipes, alligators spitting goldfish, drop bears, hoop snake, wild haggis, the ferocious Nauga (where Naugahyde comes from, naturally), and the Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus.

Oh, and an alot of teal. Multiple alots of teal. These aren't aggressive in the fighty sense, but they will totally stalk anyone who talks too much, in large groups.

DAY THREE: We journey into the catacombs of the island! Deep in the machinery of the island, you will fight a nearly endless supply of crazy critters - including the dreaded gremlin-squirrel hybrid - on your way to throw the switch that will set everything to rights.

Wot we need from you
Sign-ups! We need research teamers for the weekend (April 15th and April 16th), a headcount of who wants to go into the island's catacombs for April 17th, and anyone who wants to be the one who throws the switch will need to throw their hat into the ring in the appropriate OCD. Deadline for sign-ups is Thursday, April 13th.

That's it?
Yep! It's a nice, fun, no-frills Easter throwdown. Mod your own crack, or bug us for an NPC or brainstorming for plans!

Upcoming Events!

We interrupt your genderswap weekend currently in progress for an announcement about some upcoming events. First, on Saturday, April 8th the island is bursting into song... again! Yes, it's the return of Once More With Fandom, the forcing-you-to-sing-your-feelings-out extravaganza we all know and love.

Our second announcement is about the BDE. This one will be scheduled for Easter weekend, April 15th-17th. Because it's Easter, it'll be a chill, play-as-you-wish affair with absolutely minimal sign-ups, so anyone can opt in or out as they please and on an hour-by-hour basis. Something is shorting in the bowels of the island, sending the island across the planet to god knows foggy where, and cutting off all communications.

Clearly, one of those terrible, soul-breaking BDEs is about to happen again and we should all be terrified. Right? Right?

... Instead, the catacombs underneath the island are going to spit up a veritable bonanza of weird mutant animals to invade the island, with earthquake-inducing easter bunnies at the forefront. The only way to stop them is to go on a hunt inside the machinery of the island.

And damn, but it's full of bunnies.

We'll post more information - and sign-ups! - in a couple of days.

Questions, comments, pie?

... not to be confused with the normal Saturday brainstorming post that went up earlier.

Hi, folks! Sign-ups have closed, now it's time to brainstorm! You're all good to go, so consider your sign-ups okayed. This post is here for a couple of things:

- Coordinating backstories between villagers and the newly-hollowed or already-bemonstered;
- Setting up fights between regular folks and monsters or regular folks and bosses;
- Anything else you might want to play with.

Note to anyone signed up as a fighter and/or a boss: We have selected two bosses to include in the finale and contacted those players accordingly. Anyone who signed up as a fighter will be distributed across these two bosses and EVIL ZOE, with the first two fights happening on Saturday - preplayed - and the last one happening on early Sunday morning, also preplayed.

That means anyone signed up as a fighter can already expect one fight. It also means that if you applied for a boss and you weren't contacted by us, you... can still play a boss! Either by posting your boss in open posts across the BDE, or by hooking up with any would-be fighters who'd like a crack at a boss outside our finale path, right here in this post.

If that doesn't make sense... ocd up!

Hey guys!

This is just a reminder that if you want to play an AU copy of your character in the BDE, or play another role, sign-ups close on Thursday, December 1st!

Okay, so when we first came up with this BDE, we did not expect we'd be living under the actual apocalypse when we ran it. Sorry.

On the other hand: here's your chance to FIGHT THE FICTIONAL APOCALYPSE. From Wednesday, December 7th through to Sunday, December 11th, post-apocalyptic Fandom will merge with Fandom itself, cutting the island off from the rest of the world and forcing everyone to confront their AU selves from a world where things - we're not saying how, what, or which - went catastrophically wrong.

Yes, even worse than a Trump Presidency.

Wednesday will see flickers of our post-apocalyptic AU arriving on island, washing across various locations with the fog: if you want your character to not be around for this BDE, they can take these scares as a 'KAY, TIME TO GET AWAY FROM THIS PLACE' and bail. From Thursday on, however, the island will be wreathed in fog, and strange and twisted creatures will roam the island. Fandomites will wake up to find their homes and businesses in disrepair, with monsters potentially behind every door. (Even the dorms will not necessarily be safe - the only 'safe space' will be the shanty settlement in the park.)

And soon enough, they'll discover that many of these monsters used to be people they know.

Okay, so what kind of AU selves are we talking about?
Whatever terrible events transpired on Fandom to make the AU world that way, it ate at the memories of those on-island. The deterioration of memory for these AU selves can be at whatever level you choose, though we do stipulate that no one remembers the actual event that made things this way.

First comes forgetting. Then comes the changing. There's a certain point where enough memories are lost that a person goes hollow; people at this stage will be like zombies, violent but empty-eyed. The changing process continues after this, twisting their bodies further, taking significant traits and expanding on them to monstrous - and sometimes monstrously beautiful - levels. We don't want to hark back too much on the game that inspired this BDE, because we're not taking many of its rules, but an AU copy of your character could wind up grotesque but beautiful or just grotesque - it's up to you.

Eventually, the change will make enormous monsters of them all, if they survive the earlier stages. The biggest and most powerful of them all will eventually gravitate to places that are familiar to them, even if they are almost entirely out of memories. There'll be a cap on these, but we'll talk a little more about that later.

One thing does need to be said up front: we are placing no active limits on anyone in the range of 'still has a bunch of their memories, but not much' to 'zombie, beginning to change into something terrible'. That means not just all active characters - not just all active players! - on the island can be played in this range. Dropped characters can also be apped for this.

So there are different categories...?
Yes! Four of them!

1. AU Villagers with most memories intact
These are capped at two per person and no dropped characters. Those people who, in our AU, have managed to hold on to most of their memories will congregate in a small shanty settlement built in the Park. There, they are just trying to survive and cling on to sanity and companionship.

Characters who cannot rot in this way - immortal mutants not truly made of flesh, angel-demon hybrids who don't respond to the infections of mortal men, etc - also fall under this category, but if you're planning to lean that way, please let us know in your application so we can keep a tally of the more-or-less healthy. (Though again, even these people can't remember exactly what happened.)

2. The hollow
Close to zombies, the hollow are still alive, but their memories have passed and they now largely rely on old creature instincts. They're violent and will lash out at anyone, but they are still fundamentally human: no strange feats of power, or anything.

You can app any character as this, including dropped characters.

3. The monstrous
These are hollows that have started to change, but are not particularly powerful yet. Depending on what your character was like as a 'normal person', they'll see attributes increased - greater strength if they were a bodybuilder, flaming arms if they had a firey personality, whatever makes sense to you - and their bodies will be in a state of slowly-twisting.

You can app any character as this, including dropped characters.

4. The bosses
The truly monstrous and the truly bizarre. These characters will have mutated into something almost unrecognizable, deadly and powerful. They flock to one place or another from their memories and stay there, but they'll destroy anything in their path.

These are limited to one per person, and we'll pick up to four of these at random for our finale. (Please let us know if you can't play an antagonist in the finale.) These are limited to active characters in game.

Do I need a separate journal for this?
Yep; playing an alternate version of your character will involve making a new journal, so people can keep your character's real self and AU self apart.

So walk me through what's going to happen, exactly
On Wednesday, as we said up above, there will be flashes of this AU world across the island. People can leave until midnight. Then the fog will set in and block the island off from the rest of the world. The island will twitch and go grey and post-apocalyptic, rotting and terrible. Characters will not be replaced by their AU selves - they'll be able to encounter their AU selves out in the world instead.

Since the collection in the library will also be replaced by post-apocalyptic Fandom's books, a research team will be able to start digging into the question of what happened, how things can be put back to rights, and most immediately important, how to defeat the terrible bosses taking up space in various Fandom hotspots.

Like, say, the horrific twisted creature that was once your Principal who now haunts the upper levels of the school. That one.

By Saturday, the research team will have found ways to defeat the boss monsters. People will be able to fight the various boss monsters, defeat Boss Zoe, and return things to normal. WOO.

And how's that finale thing going to work?
Easy! A few days before the BDE starts, we'll post the names of all the bosses people have applied to play. Other players can then indicate an interest in fighting this boss - or not. The only one that's truly vital to the plot is Zoe, but the more we have, the more we can raise the stakes.

Questions? Comments? Pie? Otherwise, the application forms are below! There will be a brainstorming post closer to the day.

All apps are due on December 1st.

Everything from the last four days is still happening, but now there's a full on DESSERT STORM. Cotton candy cloud cover is complete. Chocolate and cola rain is falling all over the island, accompanied by high winds, rock candy hail and powdered sugar blizzards abound. Discorded animals are running amock in the mess, and Discord himself is cackling delightedly from the center of the hedge maze.

Which is just where our heroes have to venture.

It's pretty well nutbars out there.
  • All the stuff from Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday is still going on
  • Several buildings around town are now floating
  • Every statue and lamppost in town is wearing a propeller beanie
  • The gremlins that don't have wings are the size of linebackers and playing pranks on people instead of biting
  • Giant bunnies and squirrels with pointed fangs are menacing people out and about
Discord is still available for personal effects, and the hedge maze is learning how to lure people in on its own.

BDE Day Three!

Here is your weirdness forecast for Friday!
  • Everything from Wednesday and Thursday
  • Pears have faces and voracious appetites for lint
  • Some of the grass near the duck pond is alive and cheers when it gets rained on
  • Empty lots, open spaces (like lawns and beaches), and the water around Fandom is all checkerboard patterned
  • Chocolate rain is still isolated, but getting more widespread. Some spots are getting powdered sugar flurries
  • Some of the gremlins have wings
  • There's a large stage at the entrance to the hedge maze in the park with a big red and gold and fur trimmed throne on it.
Discord will be holding his coronation as King of Fandom (because monarchies are the epitome of chaos) in the afternoon (posted early for timezones). Folks are welcome and encouraged to try to attack! There will be Discorded wildlife to draw them off, or Discord himself can transform their weapons or otherwise dodge their attacks.

BDE Day Two!

Hope everyone's having fun so far! Here's our island wackiness for Thursday:
  • Everything that happened Wednesday
  • The cotton candy clouds are now covering most of the island, with periodic spots of chocolate rain. Smaller clouds may still stalk people around the island.
  • The streets are now soap! All of them. Including the stairs. With the ambient atmospheric humidity from those chocolate milk storms, it's gonna be pretty slippery
  • The hedge maze is fully grown with ten-foot hedges, and it's developing tempting pockets of creepy wackiness. Is there a wacky thing that will mess with your character's head really hard? It's quite possibly in there. ETA: Also, there's a giant tower free-standing stone fairy-tale tower in the middle of it.
  • Bunnies have grown giraffe legs and are stampeding through the dorm grounds
  • Teal deer are wearing water-squirting boutineers aimed at face height
  • An alot of polka dots has taken over the Perk. It makes a mean Americano.
Today also marks the beginning of Discord showing up in person! If you'd like to meet with Discord, ping in below with a link to where you'd like him and a note on what, if anything, you want him to do to your character! Critters are moddable, or also available for NPCing, if you like.
