BDE: Let’s Do The Groundhog Again

Hello, Fandom! Thought we’d forgotten about your semesterly trauma rollicking fun event, had you?

This year’s BDE will take place from Friday, December 17th (you read that right) through Monday, December 20th in what we’d like to call "Let’s do the timewarp again!" but it’s really less of a warp and more of a loop. See, 2021 seems to be the year of time loop stories, and I don’t know about all of you, but the admin team also kind of feels like we’ve been reliving the same day over, and over, and over, and over again…

On Friday morning before classes, a piece of Blackreef Island will accidentally zip through time and space and wind up buried into the coast by the Abandoned Warehouse District. Specifically, it’s The Complex, an icy-cold section of an” already cold island that’s home to two mad scientists, Wenjie and Egor, and their various labs built into and under the island itself. Well. Right now it’s just home to Egor, as Wenjie accidentally launched herself into another AU entirely, but that’s a story for another day. Or possibly never.

Anyway, there’s a little problem with Blackreef: it repeats the same day over and over and over again. Egor and his small army of heavily armed, confused, aggressive and bemasked henchpeople, have volunteered to be there. They like living in a time loop. You can’t permanently die! You have so much fun! You… don’t know you’re in a time loop! Oops. No, it’s only interlopers Colt and Julianna - Blackreef Island’s former and current security chiefs - who remember.

And some of you guys, starting Friday. You get a never-ending last day of exams, and you get a never-ending last day of exams, and you get a never-ending last day of exams! This is not going to be as exciting to Fandom as it is to Egor’s people.

It’s up to Fandom to figure out why this little piece of Blackreef is stuck to our island and get it to go away, all the while dealing with your less-looped-in friends and family. Have fun!

So how does this time loop work?
It’s pretty simple. Starting Friday, December 17th, every day is going to be Friday, December 17th. Forever. Or until we stop the loop. It doesn’t matter if you die, or pass out on the other side of the island, or drink buckets of coffee and stay awake; at the strike of midnight, you wake up back wherever you were on the morning of Friday, December 17th. Every object you moved is back where it used to be, every beverage you drank is undrunk again, and every bullet you may have hypothetically fired is back in its cartridge.

Some of you will remember each loop. Some of you won’t. There are sign-ups for this down below. Note that if you sign up to not remember the loop, that means your character should do whatever they did that initial Friday all over again each day - unless a character who does remember pushes them off the path.

So if Danny doesn’t remember and Steve does, Steve can wake him up in the morning and tell him they’re looping, causing Danny to make different decisions. If Liam remembers but Miguel doesn’t, then Liam putting his coffee down on Miguel's Perk table on the second loop might cause a butterfly effect that changes Miguel’s actions for the rest of the day, without Miguel realizing he’s in a loop. (But, like the drinks becoming undrunk at midnight, if you choose the option of your character not remembering, on the next day that is the same day, your character is back to not remembering.)

And like the lyrics of Hotel California, you can check out any time you like, but you can never leave. If you were off-island as the plot began, you can return back to Fandom. You cannot, however, leave the island during the plot.

We want to give you guys some time to play with the repeat. Do be considerate to other players - if someone has a non-remembering character they really want to post at their place of work even though it’s not their shift that day, and your character will remember but does have the shift – try to be kind and consider swapping shifts. We’ll give you space to brainstorm in the comments.

We will also be posting a general Perk post every day to make sure there’s always a space for people to go have coffee without having to deal with any particular character if they don’t want to.

After the island kicks Egor and his people off on Monday, the island will do a quick 'catchup' and forward itself and the people on it to... well, actual Tuesday, the next morning.

Wait, so we can die?
Yep! Should you - or anyone else, including our charmingly aggressive NPCs - die, your body evaporates into pretty technicolor lights, and you wake up the next morning completely intact again.

Please keep in mind that means you can kill your character as many times as you want this BDE, but we're going for a Disney-esque death system. Dramatic bloody deaths should be tagged and warned for so that people don’t simply trip and fall into something potentially triggering. It should, overall, be far more likely that your character gets shot in the chest and evaporates seconds later, or falls down the stairs and doesn’t hit the last step, or… you get our gist.

Note that with the arrival of Blackreef and its masked henchmen, there will be more generic-y bullet-shooting guns flooding onto the island. Please keep all open fights to the abandoned warehouse district, on Blackreef itself, in private posts, or contain them to small portions of the island, ie 'a corner of the beach', not the whole beach.

So how are we fixing this?
Two other Deathloop canon characters will move from Blackreef to the island on Friday evening and every evening afterward: Colt and Julianna. Both of them remember the loops, but have different agendas. For Julianna, the loop is fun and she doesn’t want it to end; she can be reasoned with, but she’s more likely to either ignore you or shoot you. Colt, on the other hand, wants to break this loop. You’re going to want to make friends with Colt.

These two NPCs will be wandering around the abandoned warehouse district fighting each other for most of the BDE, but they can visit (and/or fight) player characters on request.

On Sunday, either with or without Colt’s help, a small contingent of fighters and science-y types will sneak into the Complex on Blackreef and rifle through Egor’s things. This will lead to an eventual battle to take out Egor (because killing Egor=loop breaking=yay escape?) on Monday afternoon. Both of these scenes will be preplayed, and sign-ups are below.

What’s Blackreef like?
The Complex, the section of Blackreef that will be stuck to the island, is attached to the Abandoned Warehouse District by a little umbilical cord made of mud. Once you cross, you’ll find yourself surrounded by ice and occasional patches of snow across a lot of grass and more mud: Blackreef is a polar island, and it is cold. If you want to know the lay of the land, there’s a map here that will give you an indication of what this piece of island looks like.

The outside areas will be largely empty of people, if full of old junk - think cars and trucks, big empty gas cans, and so on. There used to be a modern settlement here, before they vanished and Egor and the rest of the time loop cult settled in, but it’s clearly been a while. There are some cement bunkers built into the hills, and there are patrols of armed people here who won’t be happy to see you - but also small paths to squeeze through. Don’t worry too much about getting everything right 1:1 and mod little escape routes, weird labs and shooty people where you like. If you don’t feel comfortable doing that, these video will give you more reference.

Past these bunkers are little field labs that are basically just shipping containers stacked on top of each other, full of equipment and weird notes. These are Wenjie and Egor’s labs. Don’t touch anything here unless you know what you’re doing - if you get here at all, because the likelihood of being shot by this point is VERY HIGH with all the guards moving around.

What about radio?
Fry will tell you all about that in the radio comm, dearest broadcasters. For the rest of you: please pay attention to radio this weekend. It’ll be important.

Biggest question right off for poor Dwight. If he dies does he die every time? Or can he respond (even unconsciously butterfly effect style) to thing to make it so some loops he dies and others he doesn't? I mean he IS a bullet Magnet so its likely to happen at least once. Does he have to die every time after the first death or can it alternate?

So the things that happen the Monday version of the looped day will stick, then? Like . . . If Luke's catches fire (just for a random example) on Saturday's looped day, it'll be fine on Sunday's, but if it burns down on Monday it'll still be burnt on Tuesday?

. . . . I'm definitely not considering arranging things so the firefighters have things to do without actually burning the town down, shut up. . . . . . . . .

Another one, for gameplay this time.

How are threads being set up? Like if Amaya and Dwight start at one of their shops and someone (theoretically) gets shot and not killed, and they want to get to the clinic, how would that work out in the game? Do we just play it all out, even the location change, in the same thread? Or would we need someone to post a clinic thread for that day in order for us to go there and continue to play things out?

A dumb question, because this threw me off with Weetiny, as well -- on the plot calendar, it says the BDE goes through Tuesday. That's just including Tuesday as the last day in the "you wake up normal on Tuesday" sense, right? The event actually ends on Monday?

Prooooobably only relevant to me but for these non-permanent deaths but I'm assuming they feel different to someone sensitive to that sort of thing since they end in pretty lights instead of a body?

I'm figuring he gets "yep, definitely died" but also "didn't go where they were meant to when they did die, something weird is happening here."
