BDE Details and Sign Up!
Hello, Fandom!
We're here with an update on the details for your upcoming BDE, which starts Monday, April 26th. Now that classes are over, an evil crystalline creature will strike the school's tower and take up shop within the castle unnoticed.
On Monday morning, you will all wake up with a strange feeling of dread, like something big and terrible is happening that is not under your control. That's the crystal starting to do its work: the more scared you are, the more powerless you feel, the quicker it can drain your power. Whether that be throwing knives real good, your confidence, or your ability to impress with your wardrobe, as long as you feel like you don't have it, the crystal can actually drain it from you.
(Yes, that means that your power isn't that far gone until the end of the week. If midway during the week your character has an attack of the Actually I Can Do This in spite of the crystal's vibes, they'll find they can still use what amount of power they have left after that amount of days.)
Obviously, a feeling of dread has never kept a Fandomite down. By Tuesday, the crystal will have sapped enough power - and woven enough evil vines through the school tower - to reshape the island, trapping everyone under a glass dome from which there is no escape. The following transformations will take place across the island:
- ash snow falls from the sky.
- mirrors line Loon Drive, the road that loops around the school walls. When you walk past them, you get the feeling that you're being watched... stop, turn, and look at them too long, and a shadow self will make itself known, a manifestation of all the worst you can be. Watch even longer - or touch the mirror - and they'll step into the world and fight you. (Alternatively, you can also choose to have them escape and spend the rest of the week on the island, terrorizing people.)
- there's something off about the rocks of Selkie Cove. Some of them seem to glow with some innate purple energy, drawing you to them and filling you with dread at the same time. Touch them, and they fill you with an overwhelming rage that takes at least a few minutes to clear.
- past these rocks lies a cave. Large trolls roam the island, lumbering at sizes from 7 to 9 feet. If they catch you, they will tie you up and take you back to the cave and leave you there.
- the wooded unexplored area is full of mist. If you venture there, the mud will come to life and form the bodies of your lost loved ones-- and using those bodies, they'll try to drag you into the mud. Of course, they're only made of soil, so they're easily broken...
- a Schoolteacher roams the abandoned warehouses, holding class for all the naughty children that need remedial instruction. She can stretch her limbs far and wide, and if she catches you, she'll drag you back to her classroom and make you do sums. For every mistake, you get a tap on your hands with the ruler.
- the roads up to the school gates and just beyond are lined with hands that shoot out of the bushes a dozen at the time and try to grab you.
- tentacled beasts swim underwater in the sea around the island, and they will drag you down and try to drown you if you're not careful.
- the hypnotic giggles of small children are heard around the playground. They can draw you in and if you follow them, you'll find yourself drawn into the depths of the duck pond. Who knew it had depths?
- You can hear the sounds of saws and other equipment near the campground, but there appears to be nothing there. At least until the roots of the trees around you unburrow and wrap themselves around you, opening you up to the scrutiny of a Very Mad Scientist. Think the classic stereotypical Mad Scientist Construct here, who'll strap you to medical tables and unleash machines on you that go beep-boop-beep in a menacing way. (Feel free to mod him to whatever extent of terror you like.)
Need a map of all of this stuff? We have a map.

Again, the rule is the more scared and powerless you feel, the more power the crystal can actually take from you, but it's not an immediate thing - it happens gradually over time while you're scared. If enough of these things get in your head, the chances of fighting back become a lot smaller, but if you fight off fear for longer periods of time, the process is slowed and you might be stronger by the end of the week.
By Thursday, the crystal's viney infestation of the castle will have become obvious. That means it's time for a battle plan, to take all of those vines down and shatter the crystal! ...If anyone's still strong enough to do it. On the upside, it is just a crystal-thing with vines around it, so hypothetically, anyone with a bunch of garden shears and gumption can take it out given enough time. (That means non-powered, non-fighty characters can sign up too.) You'll just have to overcome the fear-vibes to press on.
This final fight will take place on Friday morning. This will be preplayed, and involve characters taking on the vines. Anyone who isn't part of this preplay is welcome to fight/struggle with whatever is going on outside - all the Bad Things will be boosted and more malevolent all day until Team Vine Busting succeeds. The preplay will go up on Monday morning and run until Thursday so we can actually code everything up.
Questions? Concerns? Something to keep me awake for the last half hour of my shift?

Would the mud bodies that try to pull you underground... would they talk like their loved ones or are they just mindless mud shapes?
