"Boy Meets World." Now I get it.
Boy Meets World (BMW) was a sitcom that aired for seven seasons on ABC in the 90s as part of their TGIF line-up. It was your typical 90s sitcom featuring a family, their friends and neighbors and the wacky wacky situations that only happen on sitcoms.
The main family in BMW was the Matthews family and overall the show focused on Cory Matthews, the middle son of Alan and Amy Matthews. The show followed Cory's trials and tribulations through middle school, high school and college (yes, in seven seasons -- Cory starts out in sixth grade in S1 and is graduating high school by the end of S5. By the end of the series, he was married).
There were some general over-arching plots throughout the series: Shawn's family issues, Cory & Topanga's relationship, Eric's struggles to find himself. But continuity was not strong and plot is... a generous word to describe the show really. They did occasionally tackle more serious subjects like drinking and sex (in Very Special Episodes), but for the most part the show dealt with lighter subjects (protesting finals, teenage relationship issues, etc).
Cory Matthews (Ben Savage)
"We're gonna have a child? Wait, we've only kissed. I mean, I knew I was a good kisser, but *wow*."
The boy meeting the world alluded to in the title of the show. He's a lovable dork who manages to get himself into some pretty ridiculous messes. He believes in true love and spends the majority of the series dating Topanga.
Eric Matthews (Will Friedle)
"If stupidity were in the Olympics, you'd win a Nobel Prize."
Cory's older brother by three years. He's 'cool' (by 90s sitcom standards) and gives his little brother a hard time. He's also very, very stupid. As the series progresses he ends up leaning more towards the insane end of things.
Alan Matthews (William Russ)
Alan: You know, everyday I ask you, "What did you do?" and everyday you tell me "Nothing." Well, I'm tired of nothing. I mean we both know something happened in school today and I want to know what it is!
Cory: I decided to be a girl.
Alan: Well, you taught me a very valuable lesson there, son.
Father of Cory, Eric, Morgan and Joshua. Husband of Amy. Typical sitcom dad who provides sage wisdom to his children when they need it.He initially works as a grocer but then quits and opens a nature store. He can be hard on the boys when they make stupid decisions, but it's out of love.
Amy Matthews (Betsy Randle)
Amy: Alan, remember how we were worried about Eric's F-U-T-U-R-E?
Eric: Oh mom, you don't have to worry about my furniture.
Mother of Cory, Eric, Morgan and Joshua. Wife of Alan. Typical sitcom mom who supports her kids no matter what wacky adventures they get up to. She married young and became a mom pretty soon after. At various points, she was portrayed as a real estate agent or working in the art business but later in the series she seems to be a homemaker.
Shawn Hunter (Ryder Strong)
"Today in class, I did something I don't normally do. A lot of thinking. And not about that whole war part two."
Cory's BFF. Fulfills the 'bad boy with a heart of gold' stereotype. Wears a leather jacket, has floppy hair and is mostly incapable of commitment, though he does end up in a long term relationship in later seasons with Angela Moore. Rivals Eric in the stupidity department and ends up getting Cory in trouble a fair amount.
Topanga Lawrence (Danielle Fishel)
"I'm a damsel, but not the distressed kind, one who's totally calm and in complete control of her own destiny."
The love of Cory's life. Does not fit the mold of the typical sitcom love interest because she is a hippie feminist (or what passed for a hippie feminist in the 90s). Despite her hippie feminist tendencies, she ends up marrying Cory before the end of the series.
George Feeny (William Daniels)
"We'll return to the Young and the Restless right after this word from Feeny, and here is the word, shut up."
Next door neighbor to the Matthews family. He is the sixth grade teacher in the first season, the high school principal in seasons two through five and then becomes a professor at the college the whole crew ended up at in the last two seasons. And he is made of awesome.
Angela Moore (Trina McGee-Davis)

Jack was introduced in Season Five as the long-lost half brother of Shawn. He was also a Pennbrook student and ended up sharing an apartment with Eric and Shawn, though the latter moved out, making way for Rachel.

Rachel: Umm... penguin!
Feeny: No, I don't think you understand...

Rachel was introduced in Season Six, when she became Eric and Jack's roommate. They competed for her affections and she did end up briefly dating Jack, though the relationship ended when she learned that he and Eric had competed for her.
