Detentions and YOU.
Who doesn't have fond memories of Saturday mornings filled with sleepy faces, disciplinary action, and bucket loads of magical crack? Ah, good old Detention! Over the summer, it sort of fell through the cracks, but it's time it came back with a full vengeance. Starting this coming Saturday, September 13th, Minsc will be headlining the re-establishment of a disciplinary program for bad-doers, more commonly known as detention.
We'll be doing just a few things differently this year, though, to help keep it fresh and new and interesting. Please to have a looksie:
Detention Sign-Ups: This is probably the biggest change. We are, unless it turns we still really need it, abandoning the Detention Lottery. Instead, every Sunday, there will be a post like this one where you can sign your character up if you're available and have the desire to have them earn their detention. By signing your name up, you let your teachers know that you are willing to receive detention. Of course, you are mostly responsible for making sure they earn it, either by doing something like perhaps talking in class, or passing notes, or saying that Anakin looks like a pretty, pretty girl. Which he kind of is, but that's beside the point. Teachers, you get to look at the list and see who you can potentially pick on that week.
Of course, if you have not signed up on the post but have made previous arrangement with a teacher regarding detention, you can still earn it. However, if there are no previous arrangements made and a student has not signed up in the Detention Sign-Up, that teacher should respect the student player's availability and not make them to do detention. As far as the IC school system goes, Detention is mandatory if you have it, but if the player is unavailable to be there, they shouldn't have to be.
Detention Scenarios: One of the problems with detention lately a lack of teachers to run it on occasion. Sometimes brains just fry out, as well, and can't think of something crazy wacky fun to do. In the spirit of this summer's awesome Breakfast Club detention, sometimes detention will be just that....normal, boring, sit around and be bored but discover things about oneself through the interactions with the other students. These will be mostly NPC run, and will sometimes involve community service like cleaning up the park, helping with the stock at a local store, sewing pieces of limbs and flesh back on the Caritas zombies. Not only does this take the dependency of teacher availability off of Detention, but it also mixes it up for the students, who won't know whether detention will be a crazy madcap quest for the Holy Grail or if it would be cleaning out grout from the bathroom tiles with a toothbrush.
Townie Volunteers: The third and final new thing about detention is that townies may volunteer to run them as well as teachers! Consider it a sort of community service. Hopefully this will not only add to the consistency of detentions, but also add to the variety of kinds of detentions we have. If we have a lot of volunteers for a certain week, though, preference will be given to teachers.
As with the students, there will also be a sign up every week for people to run detentions. Just leave the character name and what Saturday's you'd like and/or can do, and every week, there will be an updated Detention Schedule posted in the sign-ups, like this:
Saturday, September 13: Minsc
Saturday, September 20: Boo!
Saturday, September 27: Available; currently NPC.
That sort of thing.
ETA: Detention, for the record, will take place between 8am and 2pm.
If there are any questions, don't hesitate to ask them. If there are any pies or nekkid icons, don't hesitate to gimme. Also, wait for the OCD and don't you...forget about me. Don't don't don't don't...
[[ I've had it stuck in my head all week, so now the rest of you can suffer, too ]]

Questions or Comments?
Re: Questions or Comments?
Okay. What sorts of IC punishments can teachers hand out, if a player has not signed up for detention but a student is misbehaving in class anyway?
Re: Questions or Comments?
If a student has not made prior arrangements with a teacher and is not signed up to receive detention, but is still acting up in class, the teacher should contact that player OOCly and discuss with them that their actions lead to consequences. Preferably, if you can't do the time, don't do the crime, but, if there are availability issues that leave the student-played inable to serve detention, then he or she should work with the teacher to think of an alternative form of punishment. Preferably, again, this should be the option only if detention is out of the question.

Re: Questions or Comments?
That is awesome. Thank you!
Re: Questions or Comments?
Basically, though, a teacher should be able to establish certain rules and if student in those classes break those rules, they should expect to either be available for detention or work out something different for the punishment. Especially if it's OOC for the teacher to just turn a blind eye.
Re: Questions or Comments?
How does this work with characters for whom it would be incredibly OOC to act up in a way that would earn them detention, but the player really wants them to get it? *points at the priest dude*
The detention lottery used to give them a way to randomly get detention. Will there be a way for these characters to get detention under the new system?
*gives you a nearly nekkid icon as a two-for-one deal*
Re: Questions or Comments?
Less-easy solution? Ummm...Well.... This is still an experimental approach to detentions, and the "it would be so OOC for my character" factor hasn't been worked in as well as it should be. The lottery might still make any appearance, but, at the same time, this is sort of an attempt to get the creative juices flowing on classroom interactions (especially since sometimes, they can be kind of droll and boring). If it shows too difficult for do-gooder characters to end up in detention despite the player's desire for them to be in it, yeah, lottery will definitely be reinstated, but I'd like to avoid depending on it so heavily as its become.
Also? Ideas and suggestions regarding this (or any other problem) are more than welcome!
Re: Questions or Comments?
I'm sure we've got students who'd have no problems getting other people detentions. XD
Re: Questions or Comments?
If someone who is normally very very well-behaved for some reason wanted IC to get detention -- their good friend or SO had detention, possibly unfairly; they wanted a chance to speak with whoever was running detention; they were trying to avoid something else going on that Saturday -- it would be cracky as hell seeing someone who was bad at misbehaving give it a go. "Oh, yes? Well! I'm talking in class right now, and I didn't raise my hand first! I'm being impertinent! I believe I shall write a note! To her! That girl sitting over there! -- Please don't get her in trouble, though, I beg you. -- Look how disruptive I am!"
And the teacher is going "Are you feeling all right?" // "No! I'm disrespectful of your authority! I should be punished!"
Yes, I have issues.

My only thing is that I need to know at least 2 weeks ahead of time so I can make sure I won't be stuck at work all day. :D
