Weekly Entertainment

Late by about, er, an hour at this point. I blame the football games; no, I'm not watching them, but the noise they generate in this house...

^_^

Anyway, thankfully this is a weekly thing so in that spirit:

Ever have a pup you wanted to app but you just couldn't figure out how to get them into the game without messing something up?

...I know I have Garion who's like that for me. And another pup I'm considering except for the possible language barrier (hi, world specific vocabulary of doooom!). Anyone else?

The only one that I'm really having trouble with is Sarah Jane Smith. I want to eventually app her at some point but I haven't yet figured out where in her timeline to bring her from. Even though I think New Who Sarah would be the most difficult in terms of timeline.

Anyone from Greek. Well, not anyone, but quite a few characters.

[identity profile] makescherries.livejournal.com 2008-09-08 06:29 am (UTC)(link)
I probably should have explained that one...half of what makes the characters so interesting and awesome is their interactions *in college*. I feel that you take that away and you loose a good chunk of their characterization and character growth and yeah. Plus, one of them? We don't even know his name. ... I shouldn't try to make a point this late.

When I was first thinking about apping to the game, I actually had my eyes set on a different character entirely.

There was just one problem about him:

He was Dutch. His canon was Dutch. Everything there was to be found about him, online, was in Dutch. His series was semi-obscure, so there was no way in hell I could find even a scrap of info to list among canon sources.

Needless to say, I let go of him. ...I took Jeff instead. Apparently Welsh is easier.

Jasper Friendly Bear, from the Dead Dog Cafe Comedy Hour. I really don't know how I'd manage it, but every now and then I think about him trying to do his radio show in Fandom and giggle a LOT. Friendly Bear's Blackout Bingo! Authentic Indian Names! WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU'RE NOT BUSY BEING A CELEBRITY.

*eyes list o' doom*

There's one who I'd love to app except their canon is up in the freaking air at the moment and that makes me leery.

And there's one who's going blind, but I think I've got a lot of the kinks hammered out there, I just need to figure out exactly what he'd be doing on the island.

[identity profile] makescherries.livejournal.com 2008-09-08 06:28 am (UTC)(link)
Is it sad that when you say "going blind" I think of a very obscure character played by that guy from Law and Order? Sam what'shisface...

[identity profile] itsjustlanguage.livejournal.com 2008-09-08 06:40 am (UTC)(link)
There was one that I couldn't figure out if she should be a student or townie. Wikipedia said that she's 23, but her boyfriend in the first episode said that he's 17 and about to go to college, which never actually happened.

I think I figured out how to handle it, but the only thing stopping me now is that I've got four other characters.

I fell in love with the characterization behind an obscure character from a new-ish play by a popular Canadian playwright by the name of Judith Thompson. But, aside from the fact that the canon is so terribly obscure... pretty much everywhere else on Earth and for those people in Canada, even, who are not theatre aficionados, this character has a penchant for spinning tall tales, telling them in all seriousness, and then laughing about it and skipping off to smoke or steal things.

It makes it very difficult to actually pin down what sort of life this kid had before the canon of the play actually takes place. So, alas, I shall probably never bring Sparkle to Fandom.

A couple for different reasons. I can't figure out how to age them up or down without making them too much of an OC (Scout Finch, for one), I can't figure out whether I could play them for a whole semester (Daria), they're another damned cartoon character (Bullwinkle).

Quite a few have been passed up because I know it would mess up people from the canon already in the game. I know I don't have to avoid those characters because of who's already in the game, but it's only polite.

I have one like that, too. And I live in the mild fear that someday someone will app Juliet, which would undo my boy entirely and not in the fun way.

I had a couple characters from Stick It (Yes, I have a love of teeny bopper sports movies, shut up) that I wanted/still want to app, but ran into problems.

Wei-Wei Yong. Sassy, goofy elite gymnast from Texas. Best damned expressions on the face of the planet -- and absolutely no canon background. Oops.

Joanne Charis. Apple-butt-ed bitch and a half with a huge ego and tiny IQ. I . . . seriously have doubts that I could get her voice right. Seriously. She's so amazingly dumb, and I would constantly be trying to smarten her up.

And Haley Graham. Elite gymnast with a neo-punk, screw-you-authority attitude and a giant chip on her shoulder. And her GED at fifteen. Still working on how to get around that one. . . .

Oh yah. This chick (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lady_death). I love her to ... well, death but I highly doubt she'll work well in a school.

It's not that she's evil, she just wants all people to die so she can come back to Earth.

So not so much with the working there.

[identity profile] neurotic-witch.livejournal.com 2008-09-08 12:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I know who I want to app to replace Chris when he graduates... the only problem is her canon won't be done yet. *is frustrated*

But, yes, there have been characters that I couldn't quite figure out how to age properly for high school - like Molly Walker.

Tally Youngblood. *points to [livejournal.com profile] notyetpretty.*

Though it's less "can't find a point to get her into game," because I could do that, more "nothing she could do in Fandom would be as interesting as what happens to her in the books, and there's no way she can go through her canon if she's not in her home world."

Oh my god, Karen, you just can't ask people why they're white

[identity profile] goodgirlmeg.livejournal.com 2008-09-08 12:53 pm (UTC)(link)
My whole thing isn't so much "how to get them into the game" because I have thought of some weird excuses before but it's more like "can I really play them for a long period of time?" I always try to pick characters that I can play for more than one semester. And there are some that I made journals for that would be so hard to keep up for a long period of time.

Yes, journals for Wayne Campbell, Karen Smith and Brian Fantana. I'm looking at you.

Then again, I didn't think Meg was going to last for more than one semester either.

Eowyn, omfg. We need Lord of the Rings characters sooooo badly but she would just be so out of her element that I'm not sure how well she'd work. I can't even think of how to randomly get her here.

[identity profile] thismaskiwear.livejournal.com 2008-09-08 03:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I did have that problem for quite a while with Toph from Avatar ([livejournal.com profile] waitsandlistens), because she would have had to be post-canon to work at FH because for one, she's eleven and there was no way I could come up with an aging scenario that I wouldn't end up hating. For two, canon at that point hadn't ended yet and a pre-war Toph would have been way too young, and there's no way a mid-war Toph would have been happy to settle for going to school.

. . . and of course, now that canon's ended and I would know how to go about it better, I think I've got as many sarcastic ass-kicking females as I can handle. -_-

I haven't had a problem finding a way to bring them IG, but I'm also stuck waiting on more canon. I'm waiting on one more Discworld book to bring in one character, and it's best not to get me started on the Star Wars EU because there are TWO I have journals for that I have to wait on there and I've already spent like a week trolling message boards for spoilers.

I have a journal ready for Sam Vimes from Discworld and can't for the life of me think of a way to get him here without dragging his entire family along.

And he's HAVE to be sheriff. He'd kill me otherwise.

Well... that and I need a damn PB.

I'd love to bring in Gil-Shalos from The Time of the Dark Trilogy by Barbara Hambly or Joanna Sheraton from the Antryg books by Barbara Hambly.

Unfortunately, pre-canon, neither of them is terribly interesting and mid -canon they have to be where they are and post-canon, without Ingold and Antryg respectively, they'd be utterly miserable.

Two contributions that aren't quite the same but what the hell!

When I first looked at joining up, I was honestly leaning to apping Yuna from FFX. Post-FFX, pre-FFX-2. She's saved the world, and now she's going to grow a backbone. And the problem was ... I thought she'd come off as way too emo. Hi, I just tried to kill myself to save the world, and my friends talked me out of it, and instead, my soulmate's dead. She isn't emo, but it felt like her backstory would weigh her down at points, and maybe she was too heavy for a first character, and then I realized Rikku would be way more fun anyway. (And easier to socialize, zomg. She's outgoing and ADHD, you can throw her into situations with a quick "Something over there was shiny.")

The other is -- ha. When I had the idea for the Jerries, I headdesked. A lot. And I spent most of the app apologizing. "They're insane - technically, literally, they're not on the meds." Job? "They're going to be running a store full of ... junk and ... you can't ... buy any of it. I'm. I'm so sorry."

I figured it'd come back with "WTF, RELLY, NO, AND GET SOME HELP" but I sent the app anyway, just for the hell of it.

[identity profile] inthereflexes.livejournal.com 2008-09-09 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
I heart the Jerries, and have actually used that outside of the game, Jerry!

Yeah, there's the thing where I'm not well versed enough on how to bring a French-Canadian character from over a century ago, let alone his two companions that would complete the triad and make for an amusing class.

Or to find a PB for the villainous character, as the ones who match the tattoo do not match the rest of the description, and it's not easy finding someone that hulking. Or Inuit.

Speaking of, I need a tall ugly Greek, as one of the new adminamods will thwap me if I use Bowie. (though, having the Desu meme as AU...)

Tristram Shandy. No. Friggin. Way.
