Spotlight on Fandoms: Blade: Trinity
So, who remembers that trilogy of movies starring Wesley Snipes and his really bad hair? Who remembers the short short short lived television show of virtually the same name? Anyone? Anyone?
Well, if you don't, that's okay. I'm here to tell you about just one of those movies. The third installment entitled Blade: Trinity was really the only one that held my interest. Of course, if I wasn't staring at Wesley Snipes' BAD BAD HAIR or Dominic Purcell's attempt to be a badass vampire, I was mostly paying attention to Hannibal King as played by Ryan Reynolds.
He's pretty.
No, really, there is!
Blade: Trinity is the third movie in the Blade franchise. It picks up directly from where the last movie finished. Blade, the title character and a half vampire, is hiding out with Abraham Whistler, his mentor, after vampires framed Blade for the killing of a human. Of course, things can't go easily for poor Blade. The FBI attacks the hideout and Whistler destroys the hideout, killing himself in the process. The loss of Whistler allows Blade to be captured easily.
The end, right? Blade goes to jail and we have the shortest movie in the history of ever. Well, not so much. Blade gets a rescue from Hannibal King and Abigail Whistler (Abraham's daughter), two members of the Nightstalkers group. Blade eventually joins the group after learning that Hannibal was formerly a vampire. So, now, we have our badass fighting group. But the badass fighting group has to have something to go after, right?
Enter Dracula (or Drake to keep it modern and hip and cool) and his minions (most notably Danica and Asher Talos), who want a very powerful bioweapon called the Daystar (a bioweapon that was created by the Nightstalkers) that will kill any and all vampires in a nearby area. Two catches: the first is that the Drake's blood has to be infused with the virus and the second is the virus has the possibility of killing Blade, a half vampire.
So, awesome! Now our badass fighting team has something to fight. Blade and Abigail learn of the final solution, which is, basically, several hundred humans being kept alive but comatose so the vampires can have things to feed off of. Blade kills the head of the factory where the humans are being held and then has all the humans killed to cut off their food source.
Meanwhile, our poor Hannibal, is off being tortured for information on Daystar by the vampires. He refuses to give up information so Danica Talos threatens to bite him again and leave him to feed on a young girl. But, that ending wouldn't be any fun, would it? Luckily for Hannibal, Abigail and Blade bust in, kick ass, and Blade slays Drake with a Daystar arrow.
And then he rides off into the sunset. No, he really does.
Well, sort of. The character development came about third in line after COOL CGI and let's let Wesley Snipes GROWL on screen.
Blade
Blade is played by the ever talented (I kind of laughed when I wrote that) Wesley Snipes who you may know more recently from all his tax troubles. He's a vampire, of course, who has all the vampire strengths but none of their weakness EXCEPT for the blood thirst. That kinda has to bite, right? But, don't worry, Blade's a good vampire. For the most part. Sometimes. Well, besides that TERRIBLE hair. Blade has superhuman strength, speed, stamina, agility, reflexes, and senses. He's got the healing factor which would mean he'd give Deadpool a good fight. He can walk in sunlight (which makes him a Daywalker). He's a master of martial arts and weaponry and also a master of languages.
Blade's almost like the vampire equivalent of a Marty Stu. He's a superhero vampire hunter who becomes a protector of humans.
Also? He works alone. So, he's none too happy when the Nightstalkers rescue his ass from FBI custody and want to work with him. HE WORKS ALONE. But, he does end up working with them. Luckily, the Nightstalkers don't copy his haircut.
It's bad hair, people.
Hannibal King
He's pretty.
...
Oh, wait, there's more. I promise. Hannibal King is a brash, young, smart mouthed, good looking, gun wielding, vampire hunter. He curses and teases, taunts and slanders and he doesn't really care. Well, he does. He only really does that to vampires. If you're not a vampire, expect sarcasm, teasing, jokes and flirting. All in all, Hannibal's not a bad guy. He effusive and outgoing, not afraid to just come up to you, sit down and start talking. But, he'll get down to business when business needs to be taken care of. He knows responsibility more now than ever before and he is not a fan of vampires, not at all. It might have something to do with being bitten by one, turned and spending several years as a vampire himself. That dubious honor was given to him by one Danica Talos. They dated, she bit him, he spent several years as her vampire bitch before being cured by the Nightstalkers. Dontcha just love young love? Sigh.
But, really, he's not a bad guy and he's not going to be coming into the game as a vampire. He won't have been turned yet so he's just going to be your friendly neighborhood gun wielding wannabe vampire hunter. It's a gift, it really is.
Abigail Whistler
Abigail Whistler is the daughter of Abraham Whistler, Blade's former mentor. She's played by Jessica Biel and, from the very very thin pieces of character development we get, we know she's got an AWESOME bow and arrow weapon, she listens to rock music before a fight and she's pretty good with disguises.
She is also pretty.
The movie didn't really dwell into her past much, choosing instead to focus on...Blade and his bad haircut. The bottom line is that Abigail is a badass vampire hunter who has hints of a flirtatious friendly relationship with Hannibal King.
Abigail was Whistler's daughter out of wedlock. She eventually tracked her father down and asked to be trained as a vampire hunter. Whistler did so but did it separately from Blade. Whistler also set her up as the leader of many Nightstalker groups he'd founded.
Other than that, it's slim pickings for poor Abigail in the third movie.
Abraham Whistler
He's seen only briefly in the third movie but he warrants a mention because he's Blade's mentor. Whistler HATES vampires. This is due largely in part to a vampire attacking him, his wife and two daughters and forcing Whistler to choose which of his family died first. Whistler was also beaten and tortured during this situation.
He's a weapons expert and a master of martial arts as well. He had the honor of creating many of Blade's weapons, in fact. He discovered a teenage Blade on the street, preying on the homeless and took Blade in, seemingly taking on the parental responsibility. Whistler was the one who developed a serum to suppress the vampiric lust for blood.
Whistler has an uncanny knack to escape death, doing so in both the first and second movies several times. He finally met his match in the third film when he dies in an explosion of his hideout. There's no body, of course, so if a fourth movie ever gets made, he might have a shot of returning!
Drake
Uh, he's Dracula? Really, he is. He's played by Dominic Purcell (of Prison Break fame and he mostly goes around, growling and making loud noises when he walks. He's the first ancient vampire and he gets resurrected to save the vampire race and eliminate Blade.
So many have tried, so many have failed.
Asher and Danica Talos
Ah, the gruesome twosome. They're both vampires and both king of glorify in being vampires. As played by Callum Keith Rennie and Parker Posey, they're siblings but man, they give off a very weird vibe at times. It's best just to kind of laugh at how much scenery they chew throughout the film
Danica Talos is best known for being the vampire that bit Hannibal King (AFTER SLEEPING WITH HIM, LUCKY BITCH!) and being the one to find and resurrect Drake. She also has bad, bad hair.
Asher Talos is...well, he's got a funky vampire pet dog and he laughs a lot. Not much is known about him but CKR makes being a vampire look really hot. He eventually gets whacked by Abigail Whistler.
And that's basically the main cast of characters. There are others, yes, but there little blurbs would be a sentence long. This movie is not high on character development.
Honestly, this is a fun popcorn movie. There are lots of fights and little talking. It's one of those movies you can put on in the background, leave the room, come back and pick right back up. It's good for killing a few hours.
And, while it might look like I favor him (I do) because I play him, but Ryan Reynolds as Hannibal King does infuse the movie with a lot of comedy. And it's good comedy. He's great at one liners and sarcasm and he plays of the uber serious Blade very well. There's also the prettiness factor. He's very very hot. And he takes off his shirt. And he fights. If you need another reason to watch, watch for him. In my opinion, he makes the movie that much more watchable.
In conclusion, IT'S REALLY BAD HAIR.
