I look forward to my Nan's trifle every Christmas, and so I share.

1) Soak jam rolls (http://www.blog.michaboon.eu/wp-content/uploads/2006/08/SwissRoll.png) in port for a while (overnight if you want to, but a few hours will do). Pound cake or sponge cake is an okay substitute, if you really have to or don't like jam.
2) Place them in the bottom of a large bowl/container and pack it down really well.
3) Make up some vanilla custard (from custard powder is fine, make it thick) and pour it on top of the jam rolls/cake. Let it set overnight.
4) Make up some red and green jelly (Jell-O for Americans!) in a separate bowl and let it set.
5) When you're ready to serve, scoop the jelly/Jell-O onto the top of the custard.
6) Add dollop cream (the really thick, but not quite whipped stuff) onto the top of that.
7) Add sprinkles or nuts on top of that.

Voila! Instant sugar coma. 10 days and counting!

Every year my dad's family gets together on Christmas Eve for festivity and singing. It's come to mean more to me than Christmas Day.
