Halloween Tricks and Treats!
Greetings, ghouls, goblins and gremlins! For Halloween this year, in addition to any scary shenanigans in development by student groups, Fandom Island is going to get in on the act itself. (Let's all curse thank
glacial_witch for the suggestion!)
Holiday Grove has received a shipment of discount costumes and accessories, you see -- leftovers from a shop in a quiet little town in California that went out of business a few Halloweens ago. From sunset on Halloween night to sunrise on Monday morning, anyone wearing a costume (or even a part of a costume, like a sword or hat)handwavily or otherwise purchased at Holiday Grove will be transformed into whatever they're dressed up as. Powers, personality and all!
How much of their own personality a character retains is up to the player. If Anakin is dressed up as Tim Gunn, when sunset falls he'll look like Tim Gunn, he'll think that's who he is, and he really will be able to gently but firmly direct you away from imminent fashion disaster. While wearing the Iron Man suit. If Anakin is dressed as Random Dapper 1930's Gent, then he'll still look like Anakin, and his personality and background will be whatever he had in mind for the character, probably retaining a lot of his own. If he's dressed as a flesh-eating demon...you probably get where this is going!
Bonus answers to questions you didn't ask!
Q: Will my character get to keep any memories and skills they might have had while wearing the costume?
A: Pretty much like AU or Soap Opera weekends, they can remember stuff they did on Halloween, stuff they talked about, or stuff they could reasonably have thought about during that time. So sure, ifXander Cally field-strips an M-16 on Sunday, she can remember how to do that on Monday morning, and maybe keep that skill up if she practices it, but if not, it'll fade away. Nobody's getting a whole new set of powers here.
Q: So if I'm a flesh-eating demon...
A: Yeah, Halloween night will get wild. OOCly-agreed-upon violence or property damage is fine -- injuries will vanish with the rising of the sun, property-damage will stick around.
Q: On Sunday? Dude, I have work/school the next day!
A: The annual Halloween Night Trick-or-Treat post for residents and business-owners to hand out candy will go up at 12:01 a.m. Eastern on Sunday morning, for plenty of slowplay fun. OCD will be streamlined so you can start playing as soon as possible: instead of pre-event sign-ups, there'll be one major trick-or-treat thread for anyone who wants to hand out candy to make their own comment to. As soon as a business/home has pinged in, you're welcome to play off its thread!
You're also welcome to post your own evening adventures elsewhere on the island early in the day for extended play.
Q: So that means my character will be standing there handing out candy and half the people approaching him won't know they're supposed to be trick-or-treating?
A: Yup, that's the idea! If your character dresses up to hand out candy, he might not even know what's going on himself! Since the magic happens at sunset, characters can be fully in costume beforehand, then suddenly transform, or they can be normal even after sunset until they actually put their costumes on. Those options are yours to play with.
Q: What if I don't want my character to change? What if I want them to avoid the weirdos?
A: Don't get their costume from Holiday Grove! For weirdo-avoidage,move to another island stay in your room or house, or just be very very oblivious to the fact that that's a real elephant walking down Apocalypse Ave with Jan on its back, not Wade and Nate under a large gray sheet.
Q: Alumni and expats?
A: If they spend one of their five days on-island to come trick-or-treating in Fandom, sure. Otherwise, no.
Other questions? We're here to answer them! Also to eat ice cream.
