WHAT IS THIS LABYRINTH, AND WHY DO YOU PEOPLE KEEP SINGING?

According to Wikipedia: Labyrinth is a 1986 British/American fantasy film directed by Jim Henson, produced by George Lucas, and designed by Brian Froud. Henson collaborated on the screenwriting with children's author Dennis Lee, Monty Python alumnus Terry Jones, and Elaine May. The film stars David Bowie as Jareth the Goblin King, in very tight pants, and a very young Jennifer Connelly as Sarah Williams.

That tells you pretty much everything you need to know, right there. Seriously.

The movie opens with a scene of Sarah Williams, a 15-year-old girl, rehearsing lines from a book called Labyrinth in a park. While trying to remember her final line in the book, a bell rings and she realizes that she has lost track of time. She runs home to find her stepmother waiting for her. They quarrel, and her stepmother leaves with Sarah's father on a date. Sarah is left home to babysit her baby brother, Toby. Sarah realizes that her treasured teddy bear, Lancelot, is missing from her room. Storming into Toby's room, she finds Lancelot and yells at Toby, who then begins to cry. Sarah begins rehearsing more lines from Labyrinth, telling the story of a maiden granted special powers by the King of Goblins. According to the story, the girl could no longer stand the baby's cries and wishes for goblins to take away her screaming baby brother. As she ends the story and turns off the light, she remarks, "I wish the goblins would come and take you away. Right now." Toby suddenly stops crying. Worried, Sarah re-enters his room to find that he has vanished.

A barn owl flies through the open bedroom window and transforms into Jareth, King of Goblins. He tells her that he has taken the baby as she wished. Realizing what she has done, Sarah begs for the return of her brother. Jareth tells her that if she can solve his great maze, known as the Labyrinth, within thirteen hours, she can have Toby back. If she cannot, he will turn Toby into a goblin and keep him forever.

There are demented muppets. There is singing. Lots of singing. And there is the eternal debate as to if David Bowie has a sock or a banana in his pants. Check out the trailer if you don't believe us.

SO. WHAT IS GOING ON FOR MY CHARACTER TO DO?

EVENING, DECEMBER 4TH (Sat): Jareth makes a post in Townies, in which he discovers Fandom and decides to relocate. At the stroke of midnight, the entrance to the Labyrinth appears just behind the Weeping Angels. This will be NFI, NFB.

DECEMBER 5TH (Sun): Sounds of creatures laughing, but when you turn, there's nothing there. The sounds of movement and the sensation of being watched. And one by one, students begin disappearing. All abductions can be preplay or liveplay, as people prefer, and anyone can encounter the creepy feeling of being stalked.

DECEMBER 6TH (Mon): Abductions continue! All (any) residents can get lost in the maze/attacked by muppets/turned into creatures for Jareth's amusement. Buildings in town start changing shape, random walls spring up, and the island's landmarks themselves start shifting as Jareth works his magic. There's peach cobbler in the cafeteria (and perhaps some of the town eateries) for dessert today, and anyone who eats it will dream their way to a Goblin Masquerade that evening...and like the twelve dancing princesses, awake to find their shoes in the wrong places. NPC businesses (here, those are defined as businesses with NO PC employees) are totally going down but PC employees/business owners and homeowners have the option to decide if their business disappears or if the labyrinth grows around it. The school and dorms will remain as they are.

DECEMBER 7TH (Tues): In a town meeting, a state of emergency is declared, and one of the adults lays down the rules: no one goes out without a buddy, curfew (which adults can try to enforce -- one or two teachers posted at the dorms?), library researchers start looking for clues, etc. Communication is cut off to and from the island, and the Bog of Eternal Stench pops up all around the school! Mwhahahaha! HAVE FUN GETTING TO CLASS! Jareth makes his captives do the Magic Dance.

DECEMBER 8TH (Weds): Clashes with goblins in the streets of town, people getting turned into things, more research. People fight/interact with weird creature making their way into town and some the captives get together and try to plot an escape.

DECEMBER 9TH (Thurs): There is a trip into Special Collections to retrieve Sarah's book and diary. Those rebellious captives try to escape, and Jareth tosses the ringleaders in the oubliette for their trouble.

DECEMBER 10 (Fri): Jareth finally addresses the people of Fandom Island who haven’t been abducted, and he issues them a challenge. They have 24 hours to get their loved ones back, before he leaves, taking the way into the Labyrinth and his new Goblin Princes and Princesses with him. Our rescue and distraction teams mobilize and set off into the labyrinth. It’s now or never. You don’t mind sleeping in the hedges tonight, right?

DECEMBER 11 (Sat): FINALE! As various Fandomites take to the streets and the maze to fight back the goblin hordes, one group makes its way through the labyrinth to rescue their friends. They recite Sarah's monologue, and are shocked when Jareth laughs and says the rules have changed through his command of the island's magic, and they must win three trials to banish him. People on the Distraction/Trials teams can choose to liveplay or preplay their interactions, to better accommodate for timezones and that pesky “real life” thing.

Jareth, shocked and furious, vows revenge as he is sent packing by the island, as per the rules. All the goblins (and the castle) vanish immediately, and for the next two days, creatures and buildings start returning to normal, which is totally moddable Fandom Strangeness for characters to play with..

SOME MORE FAQ!

-- Will communication be cut off from the island? If so, when will the lines/methods be shut down? Communications will be cut from the island, starting Tuesday the 7th. Nothing in or out after that day, cut off by Jareth’s magic an d control over the island.

-- How avoidable is this plot? Like almost all BDE’s, it’s going to be pretty impossible to avoid noticing that something major is going on. But the dorms, clinic, and Caritas will remain safe places, so there are common rooms and places for you to play if you don’t want to be involved in the main plot.

-- Are the finale teams going to be doing preplay or will it be played live? The people on the teams can choose to play out their finale bits live, or to preplay them out. We’ll happily accommodate either!

-- What will people who aren’t on the Distraction and Trials teams be doing during the Finale? People who are not involved in the finale are more than welcome to continue hanging out with the assorted goblin-shaped Muppets who will still be wandering Fandom at the time, to get themselves lost in the Labyrinth, or to attempt to continue life as usual, as best as they can, while living in denial (which, as we all know, tastes not unlike pie).

-- Monsters/hostile environments: are we going to get info posts about what they look like and what they can do? Absolutely! More in-depth write-ups of your surroundings and the NPCs that you’ll be dealing with will be posted closer to the event, to allow for maximum freshness!

-- Is it possible to opt out of having your business affected? Most definitely! We can’t promise anything out the view of the shop windows (especially those that are near NPC businesses,) but you do not have to have your shop affected if you don’t want to. By Friday, much of the island will have been converted, but it doesn’t have to affect your shop.

Sign ups for the BDE will end December 1st to account for the upcoming holiday and to give everyone plenty of time to plan and preplay. We’ll be limiting the abductees to ten for the sanity of our Jareth, and our Distraction and Trial teams will be limited to fifteen each, so sign up soon and prepare your offerings to the gods of RNG!

If you have any other questions, we’ll be happy to field them right here in this very post!
