LJ Version 89
...is live. There's no
news post for it yet, but the
lj_releases post is now up. We don't know all the changes it brings, bad or good, but what we do know is this:
If you have a Paid or Plus account (at this point it doesn't work for Basic, butwe don't know if that will change because see above per staff, that's a bug and will be fixed), then
1. Go here and pick any of the Minimalism styles. At least some of them are available for all account types.
2. Click "Apply Theme"
3. Scroll to the bottom and click "Customize Selected Theme"
4. Under Basic Options, make sure "Disable customized comment pages for your journal" is set to No
5. Scroll down to the first line under Additional Options and set "Show old style Entry page" to Yes
6. Click "Save changes"
7.Profit!!! Old-style comment pages!!! (Which have already been applied to the FH comms.)
To view all comment pages automatically in your chosen style, go to Settings and check "View all journals and communities in my own style." (If you prefer to see the original journal and community layouts and just want to manually force the comments to your style, leave that setting unchecked and just append "?style=mine" to the end of the URL for any comment page you're reading.)
We'll keep passing information on to you as we put things together ourselves, but this one seemed like something worth letting you know ASAP.

ETA/Ongoing: Bugs, Fixes, and new info as it comes
- As mentioned up there, the fact that this doesn't work for basic users is a bug, and will be fixed.
- This style still breaks the page on long threads, just like custom comments. That's also a bug they're aware of, and per the link above, still working on.
- The display of subject lines is not exactly as it used to be, in a clunky, space-wasting way. I've mentioned it on the
lj_releases post. LJ staff say it shouldn't look that way, and it's been reported as a bug. - [Turning on the Classic Comments style seems to break the friendslist display for Minimalism, at least for
me, which is all that matterssome of us. Friend userpics and names disappear so you can't see who made a post, like so. (Even with "show friends userpics" very definitely turned on in the journal settings.) Some people have managed to fix this by switching to a different Minimalism style, but that hasn't worked for others, and it may only look like it works because switching to another style resets Classic Comments to No. That's been reported both as a Support Ticket and in the
lj_releases post. And should be fixed in the next patch sometime today, per LJ staff!] This one is fixed! - At least for me, Classic Comments doesn't seem to have an LJ header or footer, as reported and screencapped here. Also confirmed as a bug.
- Classic Comments still reload the entire page after commenting from within a thread; I reported it here - (This one is being tested by staff)
- There's no "expand" link for top-level comments, as reported and screencapped here and here.
- Nrrgh. Using the "Show old style Entry page" option overrides any and all custom CSS applied to the Minimalism style. In other words, with that option checked, you can't make the sidebar narrower, add a header, change text colors. If it's not pre-coded in the layout, or available as a yes/no option in the customization settings, you can't do it.
I reported that here; I really hope it's a bug they're going to fix.

Also, I don't know if it's some sort of thing y'all have done or just weirdness, but in the trips comm, the timestamp is displaying under and to the right of the userpic, eating vertical space1. I was about to go into the lj-releases post and
start shoutingfile a complaint, but it wouldn't load for me, and then I noticed that on another post I was looking at that wasn't happening at all. So I thought it might be a loading thing and refreshed like five times and it's still happening, but just in trips.1Speaking of eating vertical space, go check out what this release has done to your profile. I really don't like that, but that's another story.

you don't want to bethat has a subject line on a comment. If you mean this thing. Which yeah, is annoying, and seems to be universal, so feel free to report it. (If you can point me to a page with subject lines that doesn't display like that, please do, and I'll see if I can duplicate the settings and figure out a fix to tell people.)(I'm not seeing the profile issue? Bo's seems ok. But I also don't really mind vertical space on profiles in general, so I may just not be noticing it because it's not something my eyes are conditioned to register.)
ETA: Ah, the layout of the stats at the top? I agree it's aesthetically dumb, but in the scheme of things, it doesn't bother me, unlike comment and entry display issues.

Yeah, that's what I meant. It's not the last straw or anything, but it was unobtrusive and not obnoxious before and now it's just THERE and wasting space that you have to scroll past before you get to the parts of the profile anyone cares about. Sigh.

because I'm uncharacteristically uncynical right now, and feeling like giving LJ a minor thumbs up. Or possibly the volunteers who are actually responding to some immediate concerns, for once.

But appending ?style=mine to the end of the URL should work for Anna to get into those individual problem-posts, since she's a Plus account. You just have to do it manually in the address bar each time. (This is a Plus account and I just tested it.)
