LJ Release 90 and Poll

Livejournal Release 90 is live! (And our ability to predict when that will happen is getting eerie.)

News post | LJ Releases post

Things That Are Newly Broken

Let's just get this one out of the way first: subject lines in collapsed comments say "No Subject" even though there is one (and it shows when you expand). This has been acknowledged as a bug and a report's been filed.

Things That Have Been Fixed

Subject lines in Classic Comments are now properly positioned at the top of the comment header.

Custom CSS is now working in Minimalism even when you have Classic Comments turned on -- however, be careful not to use any custom layouts that require you to set "Use layout's stylesheets" to No, as this will kill the Classic Comments.

Things That Haven't Been Fixed (Yet)

  • Comments from deleted journals still say "deleted comment" in the default style - they thought they'd got this one fixed with this release, but it's still happening, so they've re-opened the issue.

  • Classic Comments still don't work for basic accounts - [livejournal.com profile] astronewt is checking into this again

  • Classic Comments still don't have LJ headers and footers

  • Classic Comments (and all custom comments) still break the page on long threads

  • Classic Comments (and all custom comments) still knock you back to the full page after commenting in a thread

  • Default comments still show inactive userpics in the browser and still post with the default if you choose one that has multiple separate keywords or an inactive icon

Things That Aren't Going To Be Fixed

We finally got an answer on whether official Classic Comments will be created for any other styles besides Minimalism, and that answer is no.

*punches a goat*

Things That Are Going Away

LJ Games and Writer's Block. For RP purposes, most of us probably don't care, but The More You Know.

New Stuff That Is Actually Kind of Shiny, And How To Use It

  • The LJ-Spoiler Tag

This works a bit like a cut-tag, but you can use it anywhere on LJ including in comments.

Typing <lj-spoiler text="OMG WHODUNNIT? Click for spoilers!">The butler dunnit!</lj-spoiler> produces The butler dunnit! -- click it to solve the mystery, you meddling kids.

If you just type <lj-spoiler>The butler dunnit!</lj-spoiler>, you'll get The butler dunnit!

Currently you have to refresh the page to un-reveal the spoiler, but the staff plan to put in a "collapse" option that will work without refreshing, ASAP.

Line-breaks at the end of spoiler-protected text currently display a bit weirdly, so it's probably a good idea to put any line-breaks after the </lj-spoiler> for now, if you need them.

  • Pre-Scheduled Posts/Sticky Posts

There's a change to the way the time/date function works on new posts, but it's a pretty good change, and doesn't lose any of the old functionality.

Now, if you make a new post with the date/time set for sometime in the future, the post will not go live until that date/time really happens. This is incredibly useful for posting preplays or pretty much any post that ought to go up at some time when you won't personally be around. (Not so useful for anything that has OCD, though, because you can't add comments to it until it goes live.) You can, however, edit it - all of your pre-scheduled posts (and you can stack up a bunch) can be viewed here: http://www.livejournal.com/manage/scheduled_posts.bml

Q: But but but what if I want to future-date a post (or a bunch of posts) so it always stays at the top of my journal?

A: Don't worry; there's an app for that still a way to do that. You just have to post it with the current (or past) date/time first, then edit the date to a future one. Once a post has gone live, you can edit the date all you like; it'll stay live.

And if you want one specific post to always stay at the very top of your journal, you can check the "Make sticky post" box shown below:

No matter how many future-dated posts you have, that one will zoom to the top and stay there, until you either edit and uncheck the box, or you check the box on another post. (At which point the previous sticky post will slide back to wherever it belongs in date order.)

Q: Okay, but what happened to that "Post out of order" checkbox that helped me not spam my fellow players with voicemail posts during newbie week, because if I checked it, the post wouldn't appear on people's friendslists?

A: It's still there; it's just down at the bottom of the page now, and is helpfully labeled with what it actually does: "Do not add to friends pages and RSS."

  • A minor thing, but image and video-embed placeholders can be set for comments pages now, as well as the friendslist, in the tweak to the settings found over here.

What's Next for FH?

As discussed here, we're going to do another poll, this time with a simpler yes/no vote.

As before, we'll give you some time to play around with the changes to LJ and draw your conclusions, but since the options are more straightforward now, we're opening up the poll right away: it's over here. We'll close it at 11:59 pm Pacific time on Saturday, March 24th, and get back to you with final results and more information as soon as we've had time to tally things up and discuss where to go from there.

We'll also keep updating you on new LJ problems and fixes as we find them.

[OCD up!]

I just want to say that as someone with an upcoming long catchup where posts happen on specified dates that I really didn't want to set GCal reminders for, the "post on a certain date" feature MAKES ME REALLY HAPPY.

That is all.

I'm kind of whining that I couldn't have that feature for the last four months, myself. ;)

A note on the spoiler tag: it doesn't exist in emailed comment notifications (or, I'm told, RSS feeds, etc.) This will probably impact us less in RP than in general fandom, but just so's ya know.

And apologies if someone already mentioned this; my phone internets-fu isn't that strong, yet.

The spoiler tagged text in a comment on my (flocked) mun journal didn't include html. When I get home, I'll send a ticket in, it sounds like it might be a bug.

That's probably it. Mine doesn't show the html for the italics or bold codes, either.

I have many feelings about LJ. They range from apathy to annoyance to disgust. I am having trouble figuring out if LJ or Zynga is worse for releases full of bugs.

I want LJ to make me feel like this:

But while it does seem there are a few staff people trying to make things work, their QA is non-existent, bugs are ignored, support tickets are answered dismissively, and the higher-ups have yet to apologize for insulting their userbase or reassure us they aren't going to turn everything upside down. The spoiler tag and pre-scheduled posts are nice, but....

It's not quite

at least.

I am getting REALLY pissed off at the lack of answers to all the why questions.

WHY CAN'T WE HAVE CLASSIC COMMENTS ON OTHER STYLES? WHY IS THE WEEPING GOAT SO TERRIFYING? WHY DON'T WE HAVE OPEN ENGLISH BETAS SO THINGS CAN GET POINTED OUT BEFORE RELEASE? WHY DOES LJ WANT US TO BE SAD? WHY IS THERE NO GOAT NEARBY FOR ME TO PUNCH? THERE ARE SHEEP AND HORSES AND PEACOCKS DOWN THE ROAD BUT THAT IS NOT THE SAME AT ALL.

I have no good GIFs though. Alas.

Why?

Because this is how LJ feels about us.
