meme: sorting hat

It's Monday and it's also the Monday before a three-day weekend. I'm not at all bothered by this week.

Here's a meme we last did in June of last year!

For those of you not familiar with Harry Potter, there are four houses into which the students are sorted based on certain defining traits:

Gryffindor - daring, courage and chivalry
Hufflepuff - hard workers, loyalty, fairness
Ravenclaw - wit, learning, and wisdom
Slytherin - cunning, resourcefulness and ambition

A couple points for clarification because I've seen a lot of sorting stuff over the years:
All hero types are not necessarily Gryffindors.
All jerks/bad guys are not necessarily Slytherins, nor are all Slytherins necessarily jerks/bad guys.
Hufflepuff is not where you stick someone just because you can't think of anything else.
People can totally fit into more than one house.

All you have to do is ping your characters in, and people can chime in with which house they think your character belongs in. You can totally comment as to where you think your character should go, too. Feel free to give reasons when sorting people because that's half the fun, just don't be mean or I will totally come over there. And don't forget to check back during the day as more people ping in.

Mayday's barely been around so I know people might not have a good sense of her yet. But I think I know where she strongly fits.

Frank's the one I'm curious about.

You know, I want to say Ravenclaw for Frank? He's not clearly motivated by a ~spirit of adventure~ or loyalty and he doesn't strike me as an ambitious type, but he is a collector of experiences. Where experiences are various stages of drunkenness. Maybe that's a reach, tho.

At least there'll definitely not be a question of where Envy belongs.

I'm not sure if I want to say Gryffindor or Slytherin for Tip? She's bold but she's also scrappy in a way that feels more Slytherin-ish. She cares about The Right Thing, but not at the expense of her people. What do you think?

She's got the cunning and resourcefulness, definitely, but in the end I just don't think Tip's quite ambitious enough to be Slytherin. She has ambitions, but she's not totally motivated by them, you know?

I would have actually said Ravenclaw when I first pinged in an hour ago, but then thought about the whole "driving solo to Florida from Pennsylvania at age 11" which is so Ron and Harry that you can't really avoid the Gryffindor label.

She's a Gryffindor who's slightly put out she didn't get Ravenclaw.

Boy's got bravery in spades, outfits he chooses. I'm going to say Gryffindor. The lowkey kind of Gryffindor who starts up video game competitions and singalongs in the common room instead of investigating the troll in the dungeon.

Dipper's so Gryffindor he might as well be the Gryffindor mascot. Boy's got more adventure in his head than sense. Though he does have his Ravenclaw moments.

Jones is the teacher who's been at the school since before the school was a school and no one's dared put the hat on her yet.

Vic . . . is harder to pin down. She's kind of like a Hufflepuff who's had most of the puff huffled out of her. Like, that's her natural inclination, but the Slytherins have made her cynical.

Archer's a Slytherin. A very lazy Slytherin.

Cunning, resourceful, and ambitious in the quiet sort of way that people don't always immediately realize is ambitious: Hannibal's a Slytherin in Ravenclaw clothing.

Cecil's a Hufflepuff. Through and through. He gets dragged into adventures, but he'd much rather all his people stay safe, sound, and happy within range of his radio broadcast so he can announce all their good news to the whole town.

Bob's an old Slytherin who's too old for most Slytherin antics.

Jalian's a Ravenclaw with some Gryffindor mixed in for spice.

I wanna say Tali's a Ravenclaw and Merrill's a Slytherin, but it feels weird sorting someone so sweet and earnest into Slytherin so I'm not 100% confident on that. But the mirror thing makes me think Slytherin.

I was thinking that too about Merrill, but she doesn't seem to understand the dangers of what she's doing. She's also making all the poor choices to save her people, which could mean she's a very innocent Gryffindor with poor judgement.

My suggestion for Ghanima is Ravenclaw. Not that she isn't courageous and daring too, so maybe a bit of Gryffindor too.

I think it's pretty safe to say Lucille is a Slytherin. As for Leto, I want to say Ravenclaw; I was tempted to go with Slytherin, but I'm not entirely sure personal ambition/benefit factors into his motivations quite to a Slytherin degree?

RE: Re: Lucille Sharpe / Leto Atreides

[personal profile] crimson_sister 2016-06-27 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Lucille is very Slytherin.

I wouldn't say Leto is a Slytherin, although he could come across like that. His ambition is to save humankind from extinction by turning himself into a human-sandworm hybrid and rule for millennia, which isn't what he would have chosen if he had only thought about his own wants and needs.

Re: Merrill | Tali | Cosette | Éponine | Tahiri | Kennedy

[personal profile] cracksmostly 2016-06-27 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's tricky! I keep thinking about it but I can't decide. On one hand, she seems to genuinely enjoy all the studying she does as the Keeper's First, which is pretty Ravenclaw, but then there's the rather Slytherin by-any-means-necessary thing with the mirror. Then again she seems to be resigned to her entire clan hating her for it, so long as she can accomplish the task, which is kind of ridiculously Gryffindor in its self-sacrificing nature . . . but she's also doing it all out of Hufflepuff levels of loyalty to the Dalish.

*flings up hands*

Re: Merrill | Tali

[personal profile] boneyard_girl 2016-06-27 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd actually put Merrill as a Gryffindor -- she feels morally driven to help her people, to the point of recklessness/obsession in regards to the mirror. She feels in her soul that this is what she has to do, and she goes and does it. It's her moral compass that's driving her, thus landing her in Gryffindor, rather than a Slytherin's "protect and further you and yours" reasoning.

Tali is totally a Ravenclaw, with a healthy side of learned-Hufflepuff, because that's the way the Migrant Fleet works.

THE HUFFLEST PUFF. I mean, Steven has the Gryffindor sense of adventure, sure, but almost everything he does is out of a sense of love and loyalty. He's very much his mother's son. ;)

Eventually two. There's liquor AND Sadie.

I think you're right. As I start thinking of the different houses, I actually come up with reasons why he's NOT that faster than anything, but his absolute loyalty to Sadie (and liquor) (not necessarily in that order) is the biggest exception to any objection I have.
