Technical Note on Dreamwidth Backups

Hey all,

Many of you are making or have made backups of your journals via Dreamwidth.org. I'd like to take a quick second to point out that besides having a good 'import content from LJ' feature (for anyone who didn't know about it yet), Dreamwidth also offers an option to link your LJ OpenID with your Dreamwidth account.

This lets DW know that any imported comments your LJ account made - including in journals that aren't yours - are yours, linking them back to your account and icons. Make sure you're logged in under the correct account on both LJ and DW, then input your LJ URL in the linked screen. In about an hour, you'll receive a confirmation email. Click that, and you'll get full control of all DW comments linked to that LJ.

This will also claim all comments in the Dreamwidth backups of all of our FH comm accounts, which were freshly updated today.

No problem! It makes our backup comms prettier to see everyone's icons kicking back in. ;)

My only real woe now is that DW won't transfer any icons at all if you have fewer icon slots than on LJ. Curse my love of icons. Curse it.

Yeah, I'm getting ready to take the hit and buy icon slots on DW for a bit to make sure my 70-icons-and-over kids get some love.

After work I'm gonna have to check and see what the DW max is. Jono's up to well over 200 now, because... history, man. History.

100 for regular paid accounts, 250 for premium.

My best guess is that you might have to spend the buck an icon to permanently unlock the nine extra slots, but there IS an a-la-carte option (like LJ teased about a million years ago and never gave us, which is probably a godsend for my wallet lbr)... which... I hope lets you bring your count higher than the 250 max. Because Jono is in a very similar boat, I think.
