SPRING 2019 CLASS SIGN-UPS

Good morning/afternoon/evening everyone! It's time to sign up for your Spring 2019 Classes! These sign-ups are for both NEW and RETURNING students!

Please read the following before you start signing up:

1) Teacher and Student Class Expectations! The all important guideline for what is expected of the players in Fandom High. Please give it a once-over even if you've seen it in some form or other before - consider it a good thing to click and read while I put up the OCD!

2) Japanese characters, please sign up in the Western style - given name, then family name - to make our alphabetical OCDing easier.

3) PC classes are those taught by a teacher character, the things you're signing up for here, as opposed to the NPC classes, which are discussed in their own thread towards the end of this post.

The Important Stuff About Signing Up For Classes

1) Each student character MUST sign up for at least 2 PC classes. Since we've removed the cap on characters, we have also removed the cap on the number of classes your characters can sign up for, but please consider your RL ability to keep up before chucking a character at every class we're offering.

2) If you're a TA for a class, you need to sign up for that class. It will count towards your minimum 2. Please note TA-ship in the sign-up for easy of making the class lists accurate. Teachers: please refrain from having your own character act as the TA as it defeats the purpose of having a back-up player to post for you!

3) If it's OOC for your character to take a class but you really want to take it anyway, just sign them up and we'll pretend it was an IG paperwork mishap.

4) If you sign up, you need to show up. Class attendance is how we keep track of your character's activity. If you repeatedly fail to at least sign in to your classes, we'll have to contact you about it, and you could be asked to leave the game.

5) Class descriptions are subject to change at the teacher's discretion.

6) To be fair to people in all time-zones, sign-ups are not first-come, first-serve. Excess numbers in classes will be whittled down with the handy-dandy Random Number Generator (RNG).

General FYI: Feel free to make changes to your class choices as long as you do it before the deadline. We use the final pings in each thread to make the class lists, not the email notifs. MONDAY

MON: Period 1: Reynolds: Acting 101

The mission of this class is to awaken the imagination, emotion, and intellect of the student actor by making him/her aware of the transforming power and universality of theatre and the skills required to achieve excellence in performance. It is the beginning of the actor’s journey of exploration to uncover the meaning and vision of any play and playwright in order to discover the “who, why, where, when and how” of each character to best serve the vision of the play. It is imperative the student actor understands the craft of acting, which requires a disciplined approach to voice, speech, movement, as well as an intellectual rigor in dissecting text, subtext, and style. Finally, this course will stress both the actor's ability to use "self" (body, mind, and experience) in a believable, honest way, as well as his/her willingness and resilience to transform that "self" beyond its pre-established boundaries. As taught by a real actress/comedienne with years of experience in the business of ACTING!

MON: Period 2: Pryde-Barton: Adulting 101

The adult world can be intimidating, so this class will teach anyone who's about to or even just thinking about venturing into it how to do all the stuff independent adults have to do but never get taught. This class is Earth-specific, but some things translate everywhere!

MON: Period 3: Atreides: Hubris from Revelation

Earth is a planet with many religions. It can be confusing to keep up with the various practices and moral codes, even if you're from this particular pocket of the multiverse.

In this class we will be doing a broad overview of many of Earth's religions, focusing on none in particular.

A religion is an organized approach to human spirituality which usually encompasses a set of narratives, symbols, beliefs and practices, often with a supernatural or transcendent quality, that give meaning to the practitioner's experiences of life through reference to a higher power, God or gods, or ultimate truth. It may be expressed through prayer, ritual, meditation, music and art, among other things. It may focus on specific supernatural, metaphysical, and moral claims about reality (the cosmos and human nature) which may yield a set of religious laws, ethics, and a particular lifestyle. Adherence to these ideals, as always, is subject to human interpretation and error. We will examine and discuss some of the various systems and practices, in order to better understand the world we find ourselves living in.

MON: Jack: The Art of Civil Disobedience

The course will cover a basic introduction to local American laws and how they uphold or diverge from social justice and when civil disobedience is called for. AKA: ‘Sometimes to do the right thing, you have to break the law.’

TUESDAY

TUE: Period 1: Davis: Make It Fashion

In this class, you're going to learn to make your own clothes! A new garment every week, made by you, for you, or others! With instruction, of course.

TUES: Period 2: Fjord: A New You: Casually Camouflaged or Commanding Respect

On the first day of class, students will be given an opportunity to craft a new persona; An outgoing go-getter? A quiet, laid-back individual? A dark stranger with a mysterious past? The rest of the semester will be spent going through various scenarios, taking the role of this new persona and solving problems and interacting with the world as they would. With a focus on improvisation and problem solving, this class aims to teach students how to think outside the box, put themselves in somebody else's shoes, exercise critical thinking, and live life comfortably in any role they might need to fill.

TUES: Period 3: O'Hara: Problem Solving Through Science!

Science isn't just that weird thing you have to do in school, you know. It can help open doors, tear down buildings, and (when properly applied) make grown beings cry. Come try a semester of learning how to do things with Science! And hopefully attitude. Bonus points for attitude.

TUE: Period 4: Aphra: The Art of Honesty

People say honesty is the best policy, because people are dumb. If you've discovered the pitfalls of trying to deal in good faith, then it's time to learn how bad faith gets the job done.

WEDNESDAY

WED: Period 1: Price: Intro to Dance

So, at some point you'll probably be in a dance-off for your life...Seriously, it's way more common than one would think. Apparently. So this class, taught by professional tango dancer Valerie Pryor Verity Price, will help teach you the steps to basic ballroom dances, as well as a general sense of rhythm, and maybe a few moves to put one over on the snow monster/evil galactic space invader/spooky dancing demon/wacky Broadway nightmare you're up against.

WED: Period 2: Rogers & Stark: The Future is Swell!

In addition to vaccines, the internet, and food that isn't boiled, there are a million new inventions in the last hundred years that have been designed to make our lives easier. Join Steve Rogers and Tony Stark as they break Steve's heart about things in sci-fi movies that aren't real explore the wonders of modern engineering. Try your hand at inventing machines of your own!

Let's make flying cars real!

WED: Period 3: Blackstone: Shop

It's Shop Class! You build things! What kind of things? Wood things! Metal things! Electric things! Weapons things! All sorts of things, as taught by a master builder herself. So come build some projects and learn various tools and enjoy the firm sense of accomplishment when you go ahead and make a thing.

WED: Period 4: Lecter & Starsmore: An Excuse For Field Trips

Let's face it- half the classes that these two have taught together have been little more than thinly-veiled excuses to take students on trips around the planet, through time, and across the multiverse, and this class is no different, except that it's no longer hiding behind a thin veneer of 'music appreciation' or 'earth entertainment' in order to get the job done. This semester, Dr. Lecter and Mr. Starsmore will take students on a grand tour of whatever corner of the Earth they happened to think looked interesting at the time. Students can expect to see new sights and experience new experiences, all in the name of getting off the island for an hour or so every week. No need for a fancy name to accomplish that, is there?

THURSDAY

THUR: Period 1: Hardison: Dollar Store Arts and Crafts

Getting to learn to use fancy oils and state-of-the-art potters wheels is all well and good, but not everyone is going to have access to those expensive materials when they're not attending school in a castle on a randomly-moving French island.

This class will teach you different kinds of arts and crafts projects you can do just by walking into any dollar store and scavenging for interesting and weird items on their shelves. You don't need to be rich to make cool art, you just gotta be creative.

THUR: Period 2: Jarrus & Smith: Culture Shock

Life on the island can be an adjustment for most people; from your first weekend of weirdness to simply wrapping your head around the idea of other realities, 21st century Earth can prove to be overwhelming for those who are new. In this class, students will get a crash course in adjusting to life in this possible new time and place, and will learn to recognize and address the symptoms of culture shock in the process, hopefully to make life on Fandom - or anywhere your future might take you - a little easier to handle.

THUR: Period 3: Burnsides & Cara: Problem Solving and You!

FRIDAY

FRI: Period 1: Diaz: Ballet for Beginners

The goal of this beginner's level ballet class is to impart the fundamentals of classical ballet, for a unique education that blend physical education with art and history. Class will focus on basic ballet technique, proper body alignment, French terminology and musicality. Students will be introduced to elementary barre and center work.

COMMUNITY CENTER CLASS

This class is offered for all characters--townies, teachers, and students--to take. Because it's more casual, it's not essential to sign up for it here to attend, but it's nice to give the players an idea of participation levels.

MON: Octavian: Modern Earth Entertainment

New to modern Earth? Not new, but want to get more up to date on the classics? Come hang out at the community center and experience modern Earth culture with others who are possibly just as confused! Snacks and entertainment provided.

NPC CLASSES

Nerds.

For those students in need of specific core content courses, NPC classes are handwavy, off-screen classes taken online at the student's own pace, and taught by our brilliant and not at all homicidal Danger Shop computer, HAL 9000. No sign-ups will be necessary, there is no minimum or maximum number of these classes your student can take, and they don't count towards or against the requirements for PC workshops.

We'll collect up your requests for class subjects, respond to anything that seems problematic, combine any duplicates, and make a list that will be posted along with the PC workshop rosters once sign-ups are over. After that, any student may refer to that list when talking about additional classes they're taking!

So, in this thread, please request NPC classes of a normal high school nature that you'd like to be available for your characters to take. (List as many as you'd like in the same comment, but please keep them to classes you actually want, not general suggestions.)
