Summer Travels Week 3: Fallout!
WARNING: IMAGE HEAVY POST
These last two weeks have been a fun, laid back ramp up. But now that we're generally all clear about how this works, it's time to take the training wheels off. You ready to go? Because next week, the island will be leaving all this wet behind and landing smack dab in the middle of the...CAPITAL WASTELAND!
Now, unlike the BDE I took this from (wooo! Here for this one!), instead of certain people ending up in the Capital Wasteland, the whole island will practically be turning into a location right out of Fallout 3. Am I taking a bunch of images from Megaton and hastily scrawling 'Fandom Island' under them? Goddamn right I am!
The Canon
The Capital Wasteland is the area that we know as Washington, DC and its immediate suburbs (stretching down to Baltimore for our purposes). It was created two hundred years ago after China and the US exchanged nuclear arsenals in a last desperate attempt to win the Cold War.
The world of 2077, was a world where the 1950s Americana never died (and neither did the Cold War against communism). Powered by atomic energy, the world became everything 1950s pulp comics promised us. Think Leave It To Beaver, but with robots. (A 12 minute intro to the world. CW: nukes). The world of 2277, two hundred years later, is a mutated wasteland of irradiated water, monstrous creatures, and humans doing what humans do best: surviving, by any means necessary.
And, let's be clear, survival isn't easy. Being the capital, DC and this section of the East Coast got hit hard. The countryside surrounding the D.C. area is almost entirely void of life and has quite a disturbing appearance. There is no flora, grass and bushes are shriveled and have turned a sickly black or yellow in color. The trees are charred and are no more than dead husks, which litter the wasteland as far as the eye can see. The soil itself is irradiated and scorched, making it unfit for farming purposes, while the atmosphere has a permanent yellow-green haze caused by background radiation.
There is never any form of precipitation, adding to the difficulties of finding a clean water-supply. The people of the wasteland barely have enough supplies to scratch out a living, with the only agriculture being mutfruits and lab grown plants, such as potatoes and carrots. The towns mainly survive off of brahmin meat, milk, squirrel and iguanas. Hunters also provide the locals with meat from various other parts of the wasteland and a small amount of fish from the Potomac River. Also, a large amount of food comes from scavengers inside the D.C. area who scavenge pre-War food and trade it for bottlecaps, the currency of the Wasteland. (3:30 video of the Wasteland)
The Town
And now, arriving just at the out reaches of the Capital Wasteland, Fandom is going to fit right in. The town is going to bear a strong resemblance to Megaton:
with rusted, corrugated steel and wooden shipping flats serving as a wall between it and the rest of the outside world. Considering what's out there, that's a pretty good idea. The school and the dorms have their own wall as well, fortified and built on top of the original, just because more protection is always a better idea.
Building supplies are whatever has been scavenged over the past two hundred years, with all of it showing its wear and tear. Metal sheeting from factories, damaged planks, the roof from a car...nothing in this post-apocalyptic world is new or in good condition. Even the items that have mostly evaded bomb damage still has about two centuries worth of wear and tear.
There seem to be three general styles of architecture, with the two most prominent being 'ultra-scientific' and 'scavenged.' The Fandom Clinic is a good example of both:

There's also 'busted 50's Americana,' if you were wondering what the inside of your house might look like:

As per always, this is an opt-in measure, but anyone who wants their home or business to be affected can figure out some combination of these.
There are some specific changes happening over the island at various places.
The School:
Perhaps the most striking change is that the school is no longer in the castle. Sure, the castle's still there, but it's been pretty badly damaged and is mostly a hollow shell. Classes are held in the basement, down in the Vault. Getting through the door

takes a while (and supermutant Fosse isn't thrilled to be on door duty all day), so you're going to wanna arrive a little early to get to class!
Classrooms might look a little different

As does the cafeteria

The Preserve
he Preserve is all blackened, dead trees with yao guai and deathclaws running rampant. If you see either, it's smarter to run than to fight. But this is Fandom, so you know you wanna fight anyway. What little water remains here is irradiated, so drinking it or even just getting near it is bad for you. Maybe avoid that?
The teal deer have all been AU'd into a variation on Brahmin with soft teal fur.
The Beach
It's summertime, but you maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay wanna skip out on the beach. For one thing, much of the water looks like this. (I'm so sorry, Sidon.) For another, the water here is also irradiated. It may get less so the further out you swim and the deeper you go, but that's a lot of swimming through radiation to get there. And, lastly, the beach is home to mirelurks. On the other hand, mirelurk eggs are really good and mirelurk meat is tasty, so have at?
The Park
Much like the Preserve, the Park no longer has trees. There are a few remaining stumps and some scraggly grass and painful thorns. The playground is rusted and derelict; maybe only play on it after you've had a tetanus booster?
Oh and in the center of the park is this old thing. This is fine, right?

Look, it hasn't gone off yet, right? Nothing to worry about!
Warehouse District
Look, I don't know why these burned-out shells of buildings are so attractive to radscorpions. But they are. So watch out!
The Clinic
You've seen the pictures above, so you know what it looks like, but the clinic will be fully-stocked with Rad-X (increase your resistance to radiation!), RadAway (heal your radiation poisoning!), stimpaks, and various other chems to heal whatever's ailing you. There also a few NPC Mister Orderlies to act as nurses if you require additional assistance and there's no PC clinic worker available.
The Sewers
The sewers are home to feral ghouls, who make their way above ground at night, looking for meat. They are ravenous and brainless, there's no talking to them or reasoning with them. There are a few Glowing Ones along with them, who light up the night with their sickly green glow. Stay out of the sewers, kids. And be wary of walking around at night.
I mean, be wary walking around at all, but especially at night.
No Set Locations
*Any and all established NPCs are welcome to be AU'd into Mister Handies or Protectrons. However, Mister Gutsies are an off-island option only.
*Radroaches and moles rats and bloatflies can be found anywhere. Radroaches like to dig up through floors inside houses to get at food that's been left out, but will attack people. Radroaches are the size of housecats and travel in groups of five to ten. Mole rats travel in groups of three to four and get about two feet high at the shoulder. Bloatflies are usually solitary, but can get to be the size of an adult thigh. They fly and pepper you with stingers from far away. All three are edible when killed.
*Nuka-Cola is the most popular soft drink in all of the Wasteland. Sodas in participating areas (including all NPC-owned restaurants and the school cafeteria), have all been replaced with bottles of Nuka-Cola. It comes in the following varieties: Regular, Ice Cold (the same as regular, just refrigerated), Clear, Black (a coffee base), Cranberry, Nuka-Grape, Nuka-Orange, Victory, Wild, Dark (it's alcoholic! 35% abv), Nuka-Cherry, and Quartz! Bottles of the blue glowing Nuka-Cola Quantum may be found out in the Wasteland proper.
*Most of the water in the world is irradiated. Anything naturally-occurring is gonna make a Geiger counter go off the charts. Water flowing through the pipes is clean, thanks to Fandom's extra-robust purification systems...but there are feral ghouls in the sewers. So it's possible (ie opt-in) to suddenly have your shower and tap water adding to your radiation levels.
*Food. Food is the hardest thing to come by in Fallout. With no rain, the only naturally-occurring edible food is the mutfruit and what vegetables can be grown in labs or on the rooftop garden. Most food comes either in the shape of dried and tucked-away powdered food from before the war, or meat butchered from animals that tried to attack you first. Also, a large amount of food comes from scavengers inside the D.C. area who scavenge pre-War food and trade it to people living in towns. It's possible that a trip to D.C. to replenish low food supplies might not go amiss...
Dates: May 27 - June 2
State of the Causeway: On! It leads further into game canon territory. But if you feel like exploring places like Tenpenny Tower, Rivet City, or Andale, feel free to wander across and see what there is to see. (Links include spoilers, fyi.) You are not limited to these locations, feel free to explore other places from the game, so long as your post acknowledges this is off-island.
Available AUs: Again, a reminder. Your AU cannot be any specific, named character from the game. But any generic 'type' of character? Have at. Want to be a ghoul, a member of the Brotherhood, or a vault dweller? Sounds like fun! How about enemies, like feral ghouls or super mutants or raiders? Have at! Just remember, all violence is opt-in. Wanna mix and match - a super-mutant with all the memories of your previous life for example? Sounds like fun!
Just keep in mind that there's no turning into animal-based creatures. Hardison can't be a radscorpion, Karla can't be a mirelurk Queen. Please remain at least generally sentient. Centaurs are, technically, part-human but also still on the no list. The exceptions to this are feral ghouls and supermutants, but they are at least human-based.
I have a whole slew of pics on Hardison's account for further reference, but I can't seem to figure out how to link to them. May have to link elsewhere. Also, so for reference the Fallout Wiki and the Wikipedia article if you want to do further reading on your own. Spoilers can be expected at any link.
