Summer Travels Week 8: You Remind Me Of The Babe
I interrupt my own FH!wedding to bring you the (slightly belated, my bad) news of what's coming up next week!
The island might be a little better off this Sunday than the last, but she's still trying to get home. And, unfortunately, things still aren't working out quite right. However, unlike last week, if you do turn into something, it's gonna be a little more...muppety. With a tendency to sing. That's right, we are once again heading back to...THE LABYRINTH!
Bringing us back to this BDE, Fandom will once again end up taken over by the Labyrinth. Look, between the stairs and the different tiers, we're already halfway there, okay? There is no Jareth in the castle anymore. Maybe he's still winging his way through the mortal world as an owl. Maybe he's living in an apartment down the hall from Sarah. But the Goblin Kingdom still functions, even without a Goblin King. Hell, they've even found a more efficient way to get more goblins. Why settle for one bespoke goblin from a castoff sibling when you can claim a whole town?
And thus, the Labyrinth, slowly overtaking the whole town. All the better to kidnap you with, my dears.
Timeline of Events!
Monday: The island winds up in a new AU. It seems...fine? But no one really believes this anymore, do they? Which is fair, because deep in the Preserve, an old stone gate appears: the entrance to the Labyrinth. All through the day, people (especially students), get the feeling that they're being watched. Cackling laughter echoes in the air, but there's no one around. Bushes rustle, things move, it's like being stalked by invisible people who are...really bad at stalking.
Tuesday: Overnight, the island has begun to change. Random stone walls and hedges start popping up, blocking intersections. Sometimes they appear just in front of or behind someone, popping up when you look away. Buildings begin to change. There is just a lot of random glitter in places. Streets start changing direction, getting confusing. The island is turning into the Labyrinth, one twist and turn at a time. Even in a place where there aren't walls or hedges yet, it's easy to get turned around. You know exactly where you're going, but where is that place relative to here?
And sometimes people never make it to their destination at all.
Wednesday: Masquerade! Peaches cobbler shows up in the cafeteria. Any PC-owned/operated restaurant/bar also gets random peachmoddable specialities (or peach liquor) to serve (and NPC restaurants have plenty of handwavy peach entrees or desserts to try). Anyone who eats the peaches during the day will fall into a deep sleep at sundown and won't be able to be woken up.
A post will go up Wednesday for our dreamers to ping into, set in the evening. At the start of the party, everything will seem like a dizzy sort of dream, and it might be difficult for people to sort out whether or not the masquerade is even real. Did they ever own fancy clothes like these? Hey, it’s so nice to see their friends here, too. Who are those smiling people in the masks? As the night progresses, however, people can choose to slowly come back to their senses, and start to realize that they don't actually belong here.
Unfortunately, they're trapped in a silver ball and can't get out.
Fortunately, there is a way out. During the evening, floating crystal spheres will drift out of the Gate and around the island. For anyone who gets close enough to see them, inside are images of the Masquerade. They'll be able to see everyone who has fallen unconscious inside the spheres dancing the night away and having a lovely time. Of course, anyone close enough to peer inside will also be close enough to feel the aura of malevolence that they give off and smell the faint odor of rotting peaches...
These spheres are how the Labyrinth maintains such a large illusion, and as each one breaks, the illusion gets a little weaker. Astute characters might notice that as they shatter the spheres, the dreamers inside seem a little more awake and alert. Once enough spheres are broken, the spell will be weak enough for the dancers inside to shatter the walls and break free, waking up wherever they had fallen asleep.
Well...most of them anyway. Those who so choose can have their characters stay behind, trapped by the Masquerade dancers. We'll get back to them later.
Thursday:The transformation into the Labyrinth proper is almost complete. Now it's time for the denizens of the Labyrinth to come pouring through the gate. The Bog of Eternal Stench takes up it's old place outside the high school. There's a Fire Gang camp in the park near the playground. The Warehouse District becomes the Goblin City, complete with walls and cannons and goblins ready to defend it. And, of course, deep in the sewers are oubliettes, places of forgetting. Large stone-faced columns guard them, and it's possible THE CLEANERS are down there as well. But no one would have reason to be down there, right?
There are fairies flying around - try and catch one! Maybe they'll grant wishes! Oddly civilized worms, talking hats, Junk Ladies in the junkyard who try to capture you with nostalgia, there any number of goblins running around. Some few are helpful, but most are hostile. After all, they've come to kidnap people and turn them into goblins. That's not a thing nice goblins usually do...
Anyone who is off by themselves or in groups no bigger than three runs the risk of being goblin-snatched. You can mod it happening or play out a fight, however you want. You can also win and return home unkidnapped, or you can lose and get dragged off further into the Labyrinth.
Friday - Sunday: Well, for one thing, you probably can't order takeout anymore. Most of the delivery people have gotten lost in the Labyrinth if any of them were foolish enough to try to go. On the other hand, maybe you'll be lucky and a stray goblin will try to make the delivery for them? But whether they're trying to be helpful or actually trying to kidnap you is another question entirely.
This is the time for dramatic, player-based rescues and escapes. Try to find and free your missing friends, fight off the goblins, and avoid falling into the bog of eternal stench!
Kidnapped and Missing People
The dreamers who were grabbed from the Masquerade, the people who went missing from the Labyrinth, and anyone who was successfully ambushed by goblins are all being held in oubliettes under the island. Some are held together (if you want to be trapped with other people), some are held by themselves (posts of solitary confinement), and some people might even be able to escape and get themselves free, escaping from the sewers entirely. From Friday on, people can escape from the oubliettes if they wish or other people can come down and rescue people. Though the sewers are a labyrinth of themselves, so even if you manage to find one oubliette of people (who have agreed to the rescued), there's no way to guarantee you can find others.
The dreamers are also in the oubliettes, only they cannot escape by themselves. While their bodies remain comatose above, their spirits/souls/psyches are trapped in more of the crystal spheres. Look, magic's gotta come from somewhere, right? And apparently without Jareth, it comes from souls trapped in the spheres. They can be freed, if someone breaks their sphere-prisons next to their physical bodies.
Clashes with the goblins can be violent or mischievous as you see fit. These are the same goblins that break out cannons and firing squads down the road, so they're absolutely capable of getting dangerous. You can do your best to kill them, but since they possess the souls of Muppets, you'll be more likely to end with cartoonish KO situations than fatalities. Think Muppets, or perhaps Looney Tunes, for an idea as to how goblin altercations might go. If caught in the line of fire, your goblin opponent might conveniently stumble in the nick of time, or get dragged bodily into the hedges by their counterparts. Laser fire might deflect from goblin armour, bounce around the walls a bit, and then zing him in the rear just as he thinks he’s in the clear. If you throw an explosive at him, he’ll be more likely to stand there blackened like soot before falling over in a blinking puff of ash than to be blown to messy bits.
Heck, the Fire Gang pull off their own limbs and stick them back on in whatever order they want. They won’t care if you chop off a limb. They’ll just demand that you give them a head in exchange. ;) (many thanks to
myownface for the c/p permission!)
Since Jareth isn't here anymore, magic and powers on the island work as normal.
Dates: July 1st - July 7th
Causeway: On! Though this reality's end of the Causeway just leads deeper into the Labyrinth
AUs: various muppet goblins, Fire gang members, guards, etc. No named goblins from the movie (no one can be Hoggle or Ludo or Sir Didymus, etc) but you can certainly be, say, Sir Didymus's cousin, Sir Cadmus if you want to ride around on a dog and be chivalrous or someone like the Wiseman and his Hat if you and a friend have a great schtick.
This does mean that you won't be able to play your AU'd character until Thursday (they will just be considered missing until then, having run off to the gate as soon as the change hit).

Re: I Have A Question!
When the dweebs wake up in the oubliettes and must DRAMATICALLY escape... do they wake up with their phones and stuff on them?
I just desperately need to know if Nina can take ridiculous selfies as they escape.
(I never said my questions were IMPORTANT!)
Re: I Have A Question!
Re: I Have A Question!
But now I have a FURTHER question to my question (a questddenum?) and, how does the spirit/body joining thing work in a physical sense?
Do the bodies ~dissolve to join their spirits~ and then they get to clamber out of their DUNGEON CRAWLING or do their spirits get slingshotted back to their bodies?
Re: I Have A Question!
And Who Knows what could happen in THAT scenario? But if there are creatures out there that can kidnap spirits, do you really wanna give them the opportunity to snag yours again?
Re: I Have A Question!
XD
Just to make sure I'm following (I'm sorry; I'm a pain!) things correctly, so if Nina's body is in Kanan's office and her spirit is wandering through all dungeon crawling/trying to escape, when her sphere is shattered next to her body, the dungeon crawl is over and she wakes up back in her body?
Re: I Have A Question!
Though, of course, assuming that it doesn't get stuck or caught on the way.
But yes, if the sphere is broken in the sewer, sewer shenanigans will probably come to an end as Nina's spirit tries to get back to where she belongs.
Re: I Have A Question!
So! People in the spheres-- what is it exactly that they're experiencing right now? Are they still at the dance, just with everything broken and rotten around them? Are they just stuck in a ball looking out a window at the oubliette? Are they (third option I haven't thought of yet)?
Re: I Have A Question!
Maybe you got some kind of Occurence at Owl Creek Bridge thing going on.
Basically however someone's mind/spirit/psyche wants to handle this is an individual choice.
