Summer Travels Week 11: Two BDEs in One!

The island is actively trying to get home now but to no avail. After a relatively peace, if low-key frustrating week, the island is going to once more try to get back home. But, well...have you ever wanted something so badly you broke reality? Because that's what's happening here. Rifts and realities and shards, oh my!

A weird mashup of the Bioshock Infinite and the Zinyak/Saints Row IV (still sans Keith David, sadly) BDEs is going to overtake the island. What does this mean in game terms? Residents of the island are going to have to be on the lookout for several things:

Changes: Much like the rest of the summer, parts of the island can transform into different things. Only this time, there's no rhyme nor reason about what they can turn into. Dite's can turn into a Grecian palace literally devoted to pleasure, while Devil's Nest might become the Devil's Nest Saloon, and Tiny is, god help us all, a real cowboy. A patch in the Preserve could become an ancient redwood forest, the playground in the park could be replaced by one of these horrific options, or perhaps become something completely different: a bunny breeding farm or a volcano or Baba Yaga's hut. Basically, parts of the the island are changing, getting stolen and swapped from around space and time and various realities in the multiverse, all of which are self-contained. You wanna open a warehouse door and have it contain the vacuum of space? Go for it! But, like cartoons, that stops as soon as the door is closed (and doesn't have much of an effect on anything more than a few feet away even when the door is open).

Nor do these need to remain static all through the event. Chilly Boulder might be a kiosk service sea salt ice cream bars in one post and then could become penguin ice luge in another. At any time, you can change any NPC-owned place or business on the island - even mid-post, so long as everybody within the post OOCly agrees to the change. People within the post may also be cosmetically affected. If the Sushi Station suddenly becomes a circus, people might find themselves dressed like clowns, up on a trapeze, or holding raw fish in front of a (hopefully trained) lion.

PC-owned businesses and homes can be changed at the whims of their owner and staff/residents should talk to the owner if they want to make changes as well.

Rifts: The island changing rapidly around everyone is not the only thing to be aware of. Rifts or mini-portals are also opening and closing pretty much wherever they want. Some are tiny, giving only snatches of strange music, weird sounds, glimpses of different worlds, intoxicating smells. Others are big enough to walk (or fall) into and these can transport you into other places. If you're really lucky, you end up portaled to the other side of the island and can just walk back to where you were going. If you're not particularly lucky, you might end up Somewhere Else entirely, much like the sims of the Zinyak BDE, and have to try to find another rift that will hopefully bring you back to the island. (Although it could just bring you to a new location entirely!)

Rifts can open and then close (so Verity trips through one coming out of the bathroom and then Liam has no idea where to find her). They can also close in one location and then open somewhere else (the same portal that snagged Verity opened up under Ender and now they're both in the same place and trying to get home).

As per usual, everyone's personal canons are off-limits without permission. And regardless of how long you want your characters to spend exploring the worlds through various rifts, everyone has to be home by Sunday evening so they're not left behind when the island jumps again.

AUs: Unlike every other week, this time AUs can happen anytime, not just on Mondays. AUs here are more like gremlin bites; they last for however long its fun for you and can change at any time. Kathy can be a gunslinger in the morning and gold-medal gymnast in the evening, then tumble into a k-drama-inspired rift and suddenly become a princess in the tower until she's rescued and brought back home. It's an AU free-for-all here folks, so have fun with it!

Dates: July 21 - 27
Causeway: Off. But maybe you'll find a handy rift to take you where you want to go
AUs: Have at! The more the merrier, really.

Causeway's off but do portals still work?

As I am the only Sense8 character, if anyone wants to go play with the Sense8 or wind up in a Sense8 cluster or hunted by BPO or whatever from canon, go for it. My only request: Please don't use any version of Hernando. You can have Lito, he can be sad/whiny/dramatic that Hernando left him, but please don't mod or AU Hernando going back to him. It will interfere with something I am actively writing right now. Thank you.

I am also, right now, the only Sandman character. If you want to play with any of those Realms, by all means. If you visit Delirium's, please ping me? She would show up and be delighted to show it off - she doesn't have to show up if you don't want her there, but she is always aware of her visitors. If you are in any of the others and want to ping her, feel free to do that too. I might be a little slow this week but I can ping in if summoned.

[Edit:] Checked in with the other Mass Effect folks, we are all onboard with Mass Effect being used. Len would like a head's up if anyone bumps into Liara. Can't give an invite to Mass Effect but can put here that if the rest of the folks want to, both I and Zach agree to it. Not modding him, I texted him because he's camping this weekend and not at a computer.

In the 'not an invite but agreement' field: he also agrees to any Dragon Age if the others - Anders and Cassandra, I think? - want to use it.

Since I'm the only person here from DMC (angels and demons and white-haired Nephilim, oh my!), I'm going to give a 'go ahead, except if you're going past the reboot storyline and want to use Nero, in which case bug me first'. Likewise Anthem - 'massive guarded cities, no internet tech, superheroes in robo-suits fighting magical cataclysms from an unstoppable natural force' - is fine as long as you stick to pre-end-of-base-canon for Owen-related reasons.

And by mutual agreement with [personal profile] built_fjord_tough, people are welcome to take a dive into D&D fantasy and visit Exandria! And feel free to poke me with any questions, just know you are going to get nerded at so, so hard.

I would just ask that if anyone uses an AU that's affected by major events from either campaign (for example the Chroma Conclave attacks, Vecna, the Tri-Spires attack in Zadash, or god forbid, the Laughing Hand), give us a heads up?

Literally every single one of my canons is completely fair games, ohmygod, but especially beautiful Daventry (aka my wholesome fantasy world is sillier than your dark fantasy world, nyah!), Summer's extreme wealth of bat-shit crazy planets and alternate dimensions, and Sidon's Hyrule, although now I'm just picturing Sidon dealing with the multitude of other Hyrules. He'd love the shit out of Wind Waker.

Come to the Soul Society, and fight Shinigami trying to find you as a ryoko breaking into the Seiritei...

Come to Eos and ride some chocobos across Duscae or take a nice gondola ride in Altissia...just dont' rift at night or else you're gonna have to fight some daemons!

But the best is definitely the idea of someone just catching a rift that lands them in rural-ass Letterkenny, Ontario, just hanging out and drinking beer and smokin' darts in front of a produce stand.

I know everyone's itching to get to early 1990s Hollywood, too, while we're at it...

But we all know B99's the only one of my canons anyone even knows, anyway, lol. <3 Now if only we can figure out a way to rift Hannibal, Boyle, and Ignis all into the same place at the same time, preferrably an Iron Chef kitchen...

....this week is going to short circuit my headcrack, isn't it??

Okay to use both Incryptid and Black Jewels canons if you fall through rifts! Ahddie may ping in if there's anything she'd like a heads up about!

For me, BJT is clear, have fun. InCryptid, please let me know if you're doing anything that involves a reveal for anything after Book Two

I only know one other player who knows Imperial Radch canon, but if you do you're welcome to visit, as long as you don't run into Breq or Seivarden without checking with me.

Crimson Peak canon welcomes visitors, but check with me if you want to meet the Sharpe siblings.

Dune is only open if Ahddie says so too.

Not sure how one would put it to use, but if you want to have a ParaNorman AU - either by ending up in Blithe Hollow or by ending up a seer or something yourself - fill your boots! Just lemme know if Norman might make an appearance.

... Habitat is just normal Earth but with the occasional tendency to monologue, but hey, if that does it for you, that's cool, too.

The rest are shared canons-- Shanie has already accounted for Critical Role stuff for us, though, so enjoy!

And I have way too much heatstroke going on to email every Star Wars nerd at the moment but I'm cool with it, personally, if the rest touch base saying the same? All billion of us. Ditto FFVII, pending a Killaurey? I cannot speak for those folks, only meeee.

Adjusting the FFVII one after talking to Killaurey-- People are perfectly welcome to dabble in most aspects of the FFVII universe- if they want to muck around with Materia or fighting monsters or racing chocobos at the Gold Saucer, that sort of light stuff. But we ask that anyone who wants to put themselves in positions such as high ranks within SOLDIER, positions of power within ShinRa, anything Turks or Deepground related, or anybody who wants to step into any actual plot-relevant point right out of the games, come to us to discuss specifics first.

Basically, if you're not sure if it'd mess with us, feel free to touch base, but just exploring the broader world or taking positions of faceless NPC value are totally fine.

A bit belatedly, due to SDCC, but book-verse Les Misérables is fair game in case anyone wants to be tragic and consumptive or something.
