Upcoming Player Run Plot and Call for Volunteers

Hello one and all! We interrupt your regularly scheduled Field of Dreams-ing to alert you to another plot which will be kicking off at the end of the month. (Why tell you so early? Because so many of you are going to be offline at SDCC busy with your characters turning into animals in the middle of this month, that’s why.)

So! Starting on July 31 there shall be not a Big Damn Event but a WTH: Wee Tiny Happening. Okay maybe not that small but let me have my acronyms, damn it.

The quick elevator pitch for involvement is that the plot involves missing persons and the rescue thereof. Therefore the call for volunteers is for people who are interested in their characters going missing and for those characters who might like to rescue them. Sound interesting? Hopefully? Cool!

For more detailed information, let us go behind a cut tag

What’s Happening?

On July 31 a House of Shadows is going to arrive in Fandom. As everyone knows, the House of Shadows is a famous piece of Marvel history which has been integral to every major plotline from Civil War to -

AHAHAHAHA no. The House of Shadows is actually an obscure piece of Marvel lore introduced in the comics back in the 1960s. It remained as such until the current run of Moon Knight, the plot of which we’re stealing taking our inspiration from.

A House of Shadows is an eldritch-esque entity from another dimension which also is its own dimension of impossible space inside. It takes the form of a building of some kind and attempts to trap people. The House is impervious to almost anything so once you’re in you’re stuck until such time as the House can be made to let you out.

In addition, the House also likes human emotions but unfortunately only knows how to elicit the bad ones. It can also read minds and create realistic illusions. Combine that with the infinite impossible space and your best case scenario is that you are trapped wandering an unending maze and your worst case scenario is, well, you’re in your worst case scenario. You live out some of your worst fears and nightmares and are unable to escape.

Fun, no?

What’s the Plot?

As previously said, on July 31 the House is going to arrive in Fandom. It will attach itself to the Hermit Shack in the woods, making the shack look… a little bigger, maybe? Different? Curious, really. Maybe folks passing by should come closer and see what’s going on? After all, what could possibly go wrong?

Whoops!

From July 31-Aug 11 people on the island (all OOC volunteers) will get trapped inside of the house. The way it will progress from there is by week.

Week one, starting on July 31, will be dedicated to the House arriving on the island, the first round of missing people, and then various members of our local police force and private detectives going around to try to solve these missing persons cases.

Week two, starting on August 6, will be dedicated to even more people going missing as folks on the outside try to put their heads together to figure out how to save them.

Which leads us to Aug 12, the day of rescue! Small teams will go into the House, each dedicated to finding and saving specific people inside. Said people shall be saved while some characters, perhaps characters who share a name with the comic this plot was stolen from inspired by, will deal with the House directly.

Regardless, successful rescues! Cueing up of comfort for any character hurt! Possibly a spontaneous party if people are in the mood for that kind of thing! Either way plot over, huzzah!

What am I volunteering for?

We’re looking for characters to get trapped in the house because looking for PCs that have gone missing is more interesting than looking for NPCs. Plus the option of the House creating personalized nightmares does allow for character torment if you’re into that kind of thing.

Note: you do NOT have to do the nightmares if you don’t want to. It’s just an option. Your character could wander an endless maze, could sit in a room and stare at the walls, could take a nap for however long they’re in there, it’s entirely up to you.

For an idea of a baseline of what the House does to people trapped inside of it you can check out this comic dub from the issue of Moon Knight this plot was stolen took inspiration from. Though fair warning there is what we’re going to go with calling a dubious take on Wong’s accent in that video. But it does give a good idea about the being stuck inside an infinite maze part.

No, no, I like the sound of this personalized nightmare thing. Tell me more?

The House can read minds and create realistic illusions to create whatever nightmare scenario might be needed. In the comics Moon Knight used this ability to have the House make two of his enemies live through their worst fears/experiences. So one relived their time in a war zone and another was attacked by flesh eating scarabs.

For your character this can be entirely up to you and what might work to elicit a negative reaction. Fear is ideal but sadness works too. So this could be the time they struck out in Little League and everyone laughed at them, the manifestation of their phobia of paper airplanes, their recurring nightmare of taking a final they didn’t study for, you name it.

Also bear in mind that because the House is being played by yours truly, I can absolutely help out with pings to send your character through more conceptual nightmares like a fear of public speaking. But if you have something that’s more canon based that will be on you to write that because you know your canon better than I do. So just be aware that if you go a more canon based route that is totally fine, you’ll just be doing the work there is all.

The only rule here is not to play out anything that requires a content warning. Because of that I’ll be asking folks to pitch me their nightmare ideas when they volunteer just so we can coordinate and get on the same page of what’s allowed and what works.

I’m in! What week should I volunteer for?

Because two weeks is a long time to ask people to put their characters in nightmarish limbo with no ability to interact with the outside, we’re splitting this up in terms of activity demands.

Week 1: Runs from July 31 through Aug 5. This week is for low activity on the part of the players/trapped characters. This is an great week for those characters you have that you’ve been saying "Dang it, I keep meaning to do something with them!" about. Send them into the House! Establish that they’re stuck in a maze or a room and leave them there! Easy peasy!

This is also a great week for folks who read the part about canon based nightmares and went GIMME! If you’re dying to write out a whole horrible scenario for your character with little to no help needed, cool! This is a great time to toss ‘em in since the interactive stuff on the inside will be more low key.

Note: If these options appeal you’re not limited to week one. I’m just saying these are good options for things to do with characters who are going to be stuck for the longest amount of time.

Week 2: Runs from Aug 6 through Aug 11. This time period is when things are going to get more lively inside of the House. Daily posts will go up with threads for people to opt in to things like interacting with the House and interacting with other characters trapped inside. This is in addition to personalized nightmares as mentioned above.

Note: If you want your character to be alone during this time that’s fine too! That’s what I mean by opt in. The threads will be there for those who want those options, but it’s not required that anyone use them.

When volunteering for the weeks I’m going to ask not only which character(s) you’re volunteering but also what you’re picturing for them in the House in terms of activity level and nightmares. This does not have to be a fully written pitch, just enough to give me a top level idea of what you’re thinking of. What you say is not going to make or break being accepted (Unless you go super weird and do something like insist on a nightmare that is all content warning material all the time). It’s purely to help me with planning and organizing is all.

Wait - what about rescue? How does the rescue work?

Rescue will be August 12. Rescuers will be matched up with rescuees. Much like with the fire at the warehouse, if you have a teamup here in mind let us know! If we can make that happen we will.

In canon the House is only vulnerable to Sorcerors Supreme. We only have one of those here in Fandom so for the purpose of the rescue we’re going to say what people need to do is convince the House to let the trapped people go. How this happens is up to you. Get creative! Do you fight the House? Annoy it? Ask nicely? Other? We (hopefully) will have multiple people in need of rescue so multiple solutions are all possible and welcome.

You don’t have to come up with a solution for rescue in advance, just say you’re interested in volunteering for that part and if there’s somebody specific you’re hoping to rescue.

What if I want to help search for the missing people during the two weeks? Do I have to volunteer for that?

Nope! If your character wants to look into the missing people go nuts! Those who play detectives and cops were given a heads up in advance as a courtesy since missing person’s cases would affect their characters. But the missing people will be common knowledge and anyone is welcome to look, ask around, you name it. If you want any direction or pointers there feel free to touch base with me but otherwise it's not necessary.

What about food and water while my character is in the House?

Clean, drinkable water is available via plumbing fixtures throughout the House.

Canonically food is not made available but for the purpose of this plot we’re softening some of the canon so that it’s not OOCly traumatic for anyone. Basically we don’t want to have anything happening here which could possibly trigger someone’s food issues IRL.

To that end, food will not be a concern in whatever way you want that to work for your character. Maybe they handwavily don’t need any sustenance while they’re in there. Maybe they find a kitchen with materials for PB&J sandwiches in it. Maybe they find a bag of Chinese food delivery someone forgot outside an apartment door, whatever. Just bear in mind that the House’s goal is not to make its guests happy, so the food won’t be amazing but it’ll do.

(So like Dominos pizza, in other words.)

(YEAH, I SAID IT)

How about physical damage?

The House’s illusions are realistic to all of the senses but they are still illusions. So any damage from the illusions will not actually affect anyone physically. Psychological damage is entirely up to you.

The House itself is very much real, though, So if your character does things like punch a wall or break some glass, that would affect them. Please give [personal profile] doctorgingerspice a head’s up if you think your character will need the clinic once this is over.

What other things should I keep in mind about the House?

The House can create infinite impossible space but it is limited to creating things that relate to buildings. So for instance it can make a bathroom with a waterfall showerhead in the shower but it can’t make an actual outdoor waterfall.

For the duration of the plot, there will be no ability to communicate between those inside and outside of the House by phone, text, email, telepathy, Force use, slipping a note under the front door, or what have you. All posts that take place inside the House will be not for broadcast.

The interior of the House is its own pocket dimension cut off from all others, so bear that in mind for anything that might affect your character’s powers and abilities. For example if your character only has super powers when they are exposed to the light of Earth’s yellow sun, they would be powerless inside the House due to 1) not Earth and 2) no sun because 3) it’s a building.

That being said, the ultimate point of the plot is for people to have fun, so please do not take these limits as "NO! You CAN’T DO THAT!" but rather information to help with brainstorming creative ideas. I cannot stress enough how happy I am to talk things out and work with you. When in doubt, pitch me what you’d like to do and we’ll figure out a way to make something like it happen.

What if I’m not available during the time this plot is going on? Can I still participate?

Great news: Preplay is absolutely a thing! A nice part about the plot is that the House can keep people separated, so it’s very easy to accommodate those who need preplay vs live from everything from being trapped to being rescued. Just let me know when you sign up so we can make the arrangements.

How many people can sign up?

Good question? In some aspects depends on how many do sign up? I’m basically running the active parts of this by myself with some much needed and HUGELY appreciated support from [personal profile] pocketpretzels. So the limits are going to be based on things like what people want and what I can provide.

That being said, my preference is the more the merrier. So, just to totally make up numbers, if I said there was a limit of 3 people and then 4 signed up I’d much rather get all 4 in then be like NO! The limit was THREE, yanno?

On the other hand it is a small plot so it won’t be the whole island either. As needed we may have RNG decide.

I have more questions!

Great! Put ‘em in the appropriate thread below.

And there we have it! Questions? Comments? Signups? Things will be screened for spoiler purposes but stuff will be unscreened if it’s relevant to all.

DEADLINE TO SIGNUP IS 11:59 PM EASTERN, WEDNESDAY JULY 12.

Thanks!
