RISK OOC info
RISK is a somewhat complicated game that can be broken down into its bare essentials pretty easily. Basically, you have territories. You want more. You attack other people to get more. If you do this well, you eventually rule the world. A slightly more involved explanation is available at Wikipedia, but I'm sticking to what we need to know for our purposes.

RISK is played in rounds in an order randomly selected at the beginning of play. The first person does all the invading they're going to do in that round (no limit on the number of invasions in a round except for the practical limit; you need two armies in a territory to attack from it). Then the next person does the same. And so on.
Your troops are represented by an infantryman (representing one of your armies), a cavalryman (five armies, all of which ride on one horsie, apparently), and a cannon (ten armies, which signifies how poor the military budget is in RISK... one cannon for ten armies? OMGWTF?). Feel free to reference these things IG.
Every round, you get a base number of new armies. If you manage to control an entire continent (see the color-coded map to determine what a full continent is), you gain additional armies in the next round. North America and Europe earn you 5, Africa earns you 3, South America and Australia 2, and Asia gives 7 but you have to EARN those, zomg.
From one of your territories, you can attack any neighboring enemy territory (or territories connected by a dotted line on the map). If you have more armies in your attacking territory than the defending territory, you're in good shape. Battle is determined by dice rolls. Whomever rolls higher wins, basically. Tie goes to the defender.
If you successfully invade at least one territory during a round, you get a card. Certain combinations of three cards will give you bonus armies.
Sign up here during the day so I have a basic idea how to divide up the territories at the beginning of play. You have until 5:00 PM EST tonight to sign up here. Then the game post will go up and I'll work out the map of the world. Play will start at 6:00 PM, but you can take your time getting there if need be. There will be a sign-in in the post tonight just to establish your order.
Each round will have its own thread started by me or
izzyalienqueen. Each round, the first person who showed up will get to attack whatever neighboring territory they want until in order of sign-ups in the game post
Battle will be determined by modifying FH's existing fight rules. The attacker says where they're attacking from. The defender says whether or not they're defeated. If the attacker wins, they gain that territory. If they lose, they then state whether they were completely defeated (leaving one army in the attacking territory) or they retreated with a few surviving armies. Then the attacker can either continue invading with their forces or end their turn, which will result in the next person starting a subthread, and so on.
Please allow yourself to lose at defense. If everyone defends perfectly, then we get nowhere. If Isabel and I feel you're forgetting this, we'll remind you about it.
That said, sometimes people do get on a... well, a roll with the dice. If Isabel or I tell you that you're having luck rolling, then you will destroy anyone you invade or are defending against until we tell you that's over. After that, it would be nice if you lost a couple times.
If you're not around while being attacked, Isabel and I will mod your territories. We'll be fair, don't worry.
We then keep playing until there is one winner.
And, yes, I'll be keeping track of who has what territory. The list will make its way into each round thread. OCD, yo.
And since OOC communication will be key here, please join us in "fhrisk" chat tonight if you can to help us coordinate what's going on. Otherwise, you can ping me via AIM (bugofjustice) or e-mail (check my user info).
And that should cover everything. I know it's a lot of info, but it should translate pretty easily into the actual gameplay. Just keep most of the details somewhat handwavey so we don't get bogged down, remember to interact with people while the game is going on, and have some fun.
And if you want to try RISK out as a computer game, there's a pretty decent freeware version here for Java.
