Poker Night Primer
It's Poker Night in Fandom!
Since I know that not everyone has the same poker knowledge that their character might, and because I had far too much fun writing up my RISK primer, AND because it might be nice if people knew what the hell we were doing tonight, here is a handy dandy Poker Night Primer.
Real world time for the game will be slightly later than usual because one of the coordinators in a PST person. Therefore, the game will start at 9:00 PM EST, 6:00 PST.
We will be playing a very simple form of poker. You get five cards. We go around the table, you give the dealer the cards you don't want and get new cards back. There's a round of betting (where some amount of money is put down, then the next person matches that and raises the bet if they want, and the next person matches THAT, and raises if they want, and so on). If you don't like the stakes, you fold, but betting keeps going until someone calls (meaning "puts a stop to the betting and reveals their cards"). Cards are revealed, someone wins some money, YAY let's go again.
The thread for each hand will follow the same order, strangely enough. The next hand will be another subthread under that, and so on, and so forth. Every time your turn comes up, that's your chance to react to your cards, be all bluffy, fail at being all bluffy, whatever. Feel free to cut in where necessary for interjection, though.
The beauty of poker is that if you have to go AFK, we can skip you for that hand. Or if you come in late, you can join in a later hand. Isn't that nice?
Who has what cards will be determined by the lovely and talented
threeweapons because otherwise we might end up with six or seven queens at the table or something. If possible, please come to the fhpoker chatroom during the game to make this easier to coordinate.
The suits are Spades (the black pointy thing), Clubs (the black clover-looking thing), Diamonds (the red, uh, diamond), and Hearts (the red heart... I don't know why the black suits are more abstract).
The card ranks in ascending order are 2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10-Jack-Queen-King-Ace. If Peter deals, he might slip a Joker in there. He'll think it's funny. He's a dork.
In ascending order, the possible hands are as follows:
*No Pair (no cards of the same rank, hand contains different suits)
*One Pair (two cards of the same rank, such as a pair of eights)
*Two Pair (two sets of two cards with the same rank, such as eights and fives)
*Three of a Kind (three cards with the same rank)
*Straight (all five cards are of sequential rank, such as 8-9-10-J-Q)
*Flush (all five cards are the same suit and but are non-sequential)
*Full House (three cards of one rank and two of another, such as 6-6-6-2-2)
*Four of a Kind (four cards of the same rank)
*Straight Flush (all five cards in sequence and in the same suit)
*Royal Flush (10-J-Q-K-A in the same suit)
In all cases, high card wins. Two aces are better than Two kings, an ace-high flush beats a king-high flush, etc. The three matching cards in a full house outrank the other two, though, so a full house containing three twos will beat a full house with two aces.
If there is a tie, such as two king-high Two Pairs, the other pair is the tie-breaker. If the other pair is a tie, it goes to the fifth card. If the fifth card ties, the winnings SHOULD be split, but I suggest we go to a Conan-style staring contest to determine the winner.
Dammit, why didn't we have a Staring Contest Game Night? We still have a week to fit it in, I think. I say we do it!
Um. Anyway. Tying with a straight leaves no tiebreakers, so you go straight!!! to splitting it. Or the staring contest.
It's possible I've been writing this thing for too long. ANYWAY. I think I'm done.

Which sounds really bad when phrased like that for some reason.
