Again with the summer housing

Okay, the big issue with the cabins seems to be the matter of privacy, which I didn't think of because of the cabin layout I had in mind. Meaning, I wasn't picturing a room with three or four sets of bunk beds like a lot of people apparently were. So to get a more accurate picture of what I was thinking, I made this lovely little drawing (meaning, I did it really fast and it's not that great, but it gets the point across):

NOT TO SCALE

The walls between the student spaces are solid wood walls, but they are 4/5 walls - meaning they don't go all the way to the ceiling which aids with air circulation. There would also be curtains with which to close off your personal area. So, no, the cabins aren't as private as a dorm room, but they are better than I think most people were picturing.

This layout allows you to have a private space for your character, thus making the coordination thing much easier. It also allows for what the cabins are intended - a mix-up of people, more interaction if you so choose and, best of all, cabin rivalry. For those love birds, there will also be the option of sneaking back to the dorms for a private tryst or into the woods. I'm sure there's an abandoned cabin in there perfect for the hormonally charged students.

We haven't decided yet if there will be a counselor in each cabin yet or not. It would depend on how many counselors and cabins we end up with.

If this changes your opinion on whether you would like to stay in the cabins or not, please go back here to change you vote.

Also, if any of you soon to be new players are floating about out there, you are more than welcome to vote on this topic as well. Please just remember to vote with your soon to be official game journal so that I know that they aren't mistakes.

*eyes new kid*

Please tell me there's one student at this school shorter than me.

I haven't reached my full height yet, I swear.

Whereas I am just delighted that there is at least one female of my (soon-to-be) acquaintance who I will not be nose-to-... ah, any suggestions for a delicate way of finishing that phrase?

I don't think there is a delicate way of phrasing that, no.

But that's quite all right. I think I understand what you mean. I'd ask you to remind me not to introduce you to my taller friends, but they're all taller than me.

Here's a question: what about pets?

Cause a lot of us have 'em.

I'm sorry Nadia, we sent Furball to 'the farm'

You're mean.

Oh, GOOD question.

And here's another instance where I'm a special circumstance: my pet no likie the sunshine. What do I do about Vladdiekins?

[identity profile] kawalsky.livejournal.com 2006-05-05 12:29 pm (UTC)(link)
The cabins will have curtains to block out the sun, so Vladdie can stay inside if you'd like.

Pets have a thumbs up. As long as you can take care of them, they can come along.

[identity profile] saltandammo.livejournal.com 2006-05-04 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
With that layout the cabins certainly look like they can be interesting. and echo'ing Miles up there, great way of diving into the deep end right away. :)

Now there's a familiar face...

[identity profile] x5-alec.livejournal.com 2006-05-04 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it might be interesting, as well as a way of getting almost guaranteed interaction from cabinmates. Definitely nice for the newbies among us.

[identity profile] once-a-king.livejournal.com 2006-05-04 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Totally agree.

Also? my poor boy's mind is SO going to be blown by the going to school with girls. It'll be even funnier to have him rooming with them.

[identity profile] bound2blade.livejournal.com 2006-05-04 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I gotta admit, the more I think about it, the more the cabins warm up to me.

...And, yeah, plus, claiming such gives me an excuse to post something. :)

[identity profile] kitty--fetish.livejournal.com 2006-05-05 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, a little better :) So, sort of bringing up my concern from before, would "room" posts in the cabin be more like "So-and-So's Section, Cabin #", and then "Common Room" posts now be "Common Area, Cabin #"? Or something like it, because I still don't want to have to do that corresponding-with-6/8-different-people thing.

[identity profile] kawalsky.livejournal.com 2006-05-05 12:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Cubicle posts will be equivalent to room posts (only with a little less room) and campfire posts can be equivalent to common room posts. With a little OOC respect for each other, coordinating won't be an issue.

And for the hormonal types there'll be places to sneak off and be all sekrit-like.

[identity profile] chasingsnitches.livejournal.com 2006-05-05 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
Cabin idea seems like a great way to foster interaction between characters, new and old. I really like the idea.

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2006-05-05 01:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Speaking of interactions between new and old characters, I have two thoughts:

1. Can the cabins be a mixture of old characters/players and new ones?
2. Is there a way for cabin assignments to be set up (if the player wants this, obviously), so that two characters being run by the same player aren't in the same cabin?

Speaking for myself? Sam + Dawn in same cabin=broken!brain

[identity profile] blonde-elle.livejournal.com 2006-05-05 10:48 am (UTC)(link)
IC and OOC, I love the idea of cabin rivalry. And counselors in the cabins. And campfires instead of common rooms.

I really think this sounds like fun and has tons of potential!

Just a thought that just occurred to me - because yeah, I'm still pretty virulently anti- cabin-alla-time -

An option would be to make it voluntary both IC and OOC - students who *wanted* to stay in the cabins alla time could sign up for it, students who didn't want to move out of the dorms could stay there, and/or use cabins for special occasions only.

[identity profile] bruiser-in-pink.livejournal.com 2006-05-06 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Xander is no longer a student. He doesn't have to live in the cabins if he doesn't want to. He has the choice of getting a place in town. He might have to take a turn staying at the cabins a few times for overnight duty, but he would not be treated the same way as the students no matter what.

I... didn't know that, and it's good to know if it comes down to that. It doesn't really change what my preference would be, but it gives me an option if the majority doesn't feel the same way.

[identity profile] rocketbitch.livejournal.com 2006-05-06 04:08 pm (UTC)(link)
The cabin setup looks great to me! I really like the idea of the curtains, myself. The open-only-when-you-want-it-to-be thing appeals to me moreso than leaving a dorm room door open, actually. With the curtain open, you can see so much more, after all.
