Spotlight upon Sailor Moon
Spotlight on Fandoms: Sailor Moon
OK, I hope I do this right… i am posting this early because i have no idea what my access to the internet will be this weekend...
What is Sailor moon?
Sailor Moon is a Japanese comic, cartoon, and Live Action show and Movie. And also a musical. Don’t ask. The manga and the cartoon have some things to do with each other. The Live Action (Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon – PGSM) ventures off on it’s own plot ark. Mostly.
The story is a generally typical magic girls + talking animals + random bad guys with no real plans = Japanese fun!
Since my character is from the anime and the PGSM, I will ignore the movie, musical, and manga.
Main Characters
Usagi Tsukino - The main character of the series, a carefree schoolgirl with a heart of gold. She transforms into Sailor Moon and is called Serena in the English anime (Bunny in the manga).
Mamoru Chiba - Usagi's boyfriend and destined true love. He transforms into Tuxedo Mask and is called Darien in the English versions of the series.
Ami Mizuno - A quiet bookworm with an IQ of 300. She transforms into Sailor Mercury and is called Amy in the English versions. She is my favorite, can you tell? J
Rei Hino - A slightly short-tempered Miko. She transforms into Sailor Mars and is called Raye in the English versions.
Makoto Kino - A tall, domestic tomboy who lives alone. She transforms into Sailor Jupiter and is called Lita in the English versions.
Minako Aino - Acted on her own as Sailor V before joining the other Sailor Soldiers. She transforms into Sailor Venus and is called Mina in the English versions.
Luna - Usagi's cat. She is black with a crescent moon on her forehead and she talks. She is the one who gives the girls all the things they need to transform.
Artemis - Minako's cat. He is white, with a crescent moon on his forehead. He and Luna help the girls remember their pasts as sailor scouts, and tell them what to do when the girls can't figure it out.
There are others, but that would be a bit much…
The Plot
Carotoon:
Fourteen-year-old Usagi Tsukino is an ordinary schoolgirl until she is found by a talking cat named Luna. Through Luna, Usagi learns that the world is about to be attacked by a Dark Kingdom that had appeared once before, long ago, and destroyed the kingdom of the moon. She is granted powers to defend the Earth against the coming onslaught, and is led to a number of friends who join her in the battle.
Usagi fights using the identity of Sailor Moon, and as the story progresses she learns more and more about the enemies which face her and the evil force that is sending them. Gradually she discovers the truth about her own past life, her destined true love, and the possibilities for the future of the Solar System.
The plot spans five major story arcs, each of which is represented in both the manga and the anime, usually under different names. These are the unnamed original arc, the Black Moon arc (Sailor Moon R), the Infinity arc (Sailor Moon S), the Dream arc (Sailor Moon SuperS), and the Stars arc (Sailor Stars).
At the end of Sailor Moon, and before Sailor Moon R, the girls all forget that they are sailor scouts. Over the first few episodes of the R season, they all remember. Ususally it takes seeing a friend in trouble and some prompting from the magical cats.
PGSM:
A great evil, consisting of Queen Beryl (a beautiful, spurned ex-resident of the Moon Kingdom), her four generals, and an amorphous evil power named Queen Metallia attempt to steal energy so that Beryl can take over the world.
Standing in their way are the Sailor Senshi, five high-school-aged girls: perky Usagi Tsukino, genius Ami Mizuno, paranormally gifted shrine maiden Rei Hino, tomboyish Makoto Kino, and J-pop idol Minako Aino; two beings that appear to be sentient stuffed cats (Luna and Artemis); and Tuxedo Mask, a jewel thief in search of a Silver Crystal.
Later in the series, Metallia and Sailor Moon each get too powerful to be reigned in, and the conflict shifts to attempting to postpone the inevitable destruction of the planet Earth. (It looks like Earth is plunged into darkness and not actually destroyed per se, but the effect is the same.)
Although Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon is a retelling of the first manga and cartoon story arc, there are many differences that set it apart from the manga and anime. The story lines are more character-based and driven, focusing on the girls' civilian lives and their connection to the past more than on action sequences. While the first few episodes seemed directly based on anime and manga story lines, by the time Sailor Jupiter had arrived the show was starting to spin off in its own direction. Additionally, Usagi and Rei's relationship is closer in spirit to the manga; while they have their disagreements, it never gets to the heated level that it does in the anime.
One of the largest changes was to the character of Minako Aino, who, rather than being an ordinary girl among the other Senshi, is a famous pop idol. When introduced, she is fighting crime under the alias "Sailor V" (as in the other versions), and makes subtle reference to this double life in her music. Her most popular song, "C'est La Vie" (French for "That's Life!"), is a Japanese pun. In Japanese, the pronunciation of "Sailor V" is nearly identical to the Japanese pronunciation of "C'est La Vie.”
In addition to plotline changes, some updating has been done to minor elements of the series, making them more in line with modern culture. For example, in the original anime and manga, there were scenes involving Ami and a cassette tape. In the new version, the tape is replaced by a MiniDisc. Instead of a transformation pen and communicators, each Senshi is given a magical camera phone and bracelets. Also, their secret hideout is not hidden in a video arcade, but rather in a magic karaoke room.

Yes, I can read about sentient stuffed cats without blinking, but the magic karaoke room makes me boggle. ;)

it is a karaoke place and they have their own room. they can use their cell phones to change outfits magically and they meet there and also play and sing in their outfits. it is... special.
Ami needs a karaoke bar... does caritas do that anymore?
