Spotlight on Fandoms: Young Avengers

Young Avengers: Fanboys with Super Powers

Iron Lad - Kang:
Kang is he teenage version of Kang the Conquerer, a name that means nothing to you if you don't read Marvel. Kang is a time traveler who, go one guess what he does... that's right folks, conquers. After the adult version of himself shows up to rescue him from some bullies, he's given adult!Kang's armor and told that he's basically going to be a big villain. wee!Kang is not pleased with this and decides to use the armor to travel back to when the Avengers existed and ask them for help, only to find them disbanded. Natch. He finds Vision 1.0, or what's left of him, and finds a list of potential Avengers all around his age. What are the odds? He changes the armor to look like Iron Man's and starts recruiting the teens on his list to help him defeat his future self and keep from turning evil. But, due to the timeline getting all screwed up by him not wanting to be evil, he is forced to go back to the future (but without the awesome Delorian) and follow in his future self's evil foot steps.

He first recruits:

Hulkling - Teddy:
Teddy is a Skrull/Kree hybrid who is technically the emperor of the Skrull empire and a soldier in the Kree empire. Oh, did I mention that the Skrull and Kree have been at war since before mankind was walking upright? Yeah, fun times. Fun times. He's romantically involved with his teammate Billy, which means he's a big gay alien. And, after recent events in the Marvel universe (AKA the place where no one freaking stays dead), Teddy's dad came back to life. Kinda. Time travel was involved.

Asgardian Wiccan - Billy:
Billy is the son of the Scarlett Witch. We think. Before Wanda went all crazy and world changey, she had a pair of twins with Vision 1.0... Who is a robot, by the way. Don't question it, just accept it and move on. He's the reincarnated soul of one of those twins. We think. Confusing backstories in Marvel? Surely you jest! He has powers similar to hers as he is able to alter reality with 'spells'. The spells are really just Billy focusing what he wants to happen. So, if he really wanted Teddy shirtless, BAM! Shirtless Teddy. He can also shock people with electricity, which makes absolutely no sense, but whatever.

Patriot - Eli:
Eli is our requisite hero of color. His grandpa is the "first" Captain America, the only survivor of the bunch of black men who the US government experimented upon to perfect their supersoldier stuff that they did to that blonde Steve fellow. Eli's powers come from having gotten a blood transfusion from his grandpa, thereby making him into a mini supersoldier himself. Eli's got some issues, but I'll not spoil you for his after school special-esque arc. Eli's strong, speedy, resilient, and stubborn like a mule. He really has turned into a 'Bucky' to Captain America, in recent developments, and he tries his best to act like the team leader, though Kate gives him a run for his money, so to speak.

The group is then joined by:

Stature - Cassie:
Cassie is the one member of the Young Avengers who wasn't invented specifically for the series. She is our requisite continuity girl (as much as one can say the word 'continuity' in Marvel and have it mean something). She's the daughter of Scott Lang, an electrical engineer/reformed thief/Ant-Man Number 2. (Ant Man #1 is Hank Pym, and he's nuts). Scott is, of course, teh dead, as he got blown up by Scarlet Witch. Unlike a certain other Young Avengers' father, he hasn't miraculously sprung back to life. Cassie has a disapproving mom, a jerkwad of a stepdad, and only recently had her powers appear. She can grow and shrink, fell in love with Iron Lad (and possibly Vision as well), and that's... really the important bits. Oh, other than she suddenly betrayed her team in the 'Civil War' arc, and switched sides because Tony Stark is soooo her surrogate dad, now.

Hawkeye - Kate:
Kate is our requisite 'hero without powers'. She is, in basic terms, a teenage girl Batman. She's the daughter of a wealthy affluent New York Something-Or-Other, who has honed her skills in close combat after having suffered some sort of unspecified brutal assault in a park (that was sadly probably sexual in nature). She kicks ass, is awesome, and is by far the most competent member of the team despite not actually having powers. In simple words, Kate rocks.

Vision:
Vision is our requisite robot. Well, technically he's a suit of super armor with the Vision program and bits of Kang's personality downloaded into it. He's super smart, has crazy robot abilities, and totally inherited Kang's crush on Cassie. There's really not much else to say about the guy.

Speed - Tommy:
Tommy is the requisite rebel or dark hero of the group. He's the other soul of the Scarlett Witch's children and looks just like Billy, only with white hair. He runs really fast, which has been done to death for super powers, but he gets one nifty ability with it. He can hyper accelerate the air causing big explosions. When the group found him he was in a government prison/lab and was given the choice between super heroing and prison. Hmm, choices, choices. He also has a costume that, for those readers untrained in male anatomy points directly to his package.

Not much other than insane backstories right now, due to the writer going on hiatus to work on Wonder Woman.

Some nifty links if this has caused you to become interested
Young Avengers Vol. 1: Sidekicks
Young Avengers Vol. 2: Family Matters
Young Avengers & Runaways TPB (Civil War)

And some crazy cool action figures, which I might own and love so very much.

Questions, comments, yelling over the stupidity of Civil War?

1. Kate's superpower is pwning everyone.

2. Let's not forget that Kate designed Tommy's costume, and therefore the Crotch Arrow Of Doom.

3. I have no idea what is up with Cassie lately, because YA was handled horrifically in Civil War. See also Tommy, Sir Not Appearing In This Major Crossover Event, although I suppose that could be fanwanked as his already being an escaped convict and deciding to stay out of it. Or something. Perhaps it will be addressed in the aftermath, or Reconstruction, or whatever the hell they're calling it.

Don't question it, just accept it and move on.

Ahhh, we say that a lot in my own canon. ;)
