Spotlight On Fandoms: Ouran High School Host Club

Hello everyone~ It seems to be me and the lovely [livejournal.com profile] indebttocrazies’s turn to flood you with some well-deserved information about our fandom.

“Ouran Private Academy is defined by one, prestigious families, and two, wealth. And prosperous people have much time on their hands. Therefore, this Ouran Host Club is about these handsome guys that have time giving hospitality to these lovely ladies who also have time and profit off of them. It’s an elegant game unique to this super-rich school.”

As the little in-series description said, Ouran High School Host Club is centered around rich kids. Lots of them. And just like the description also suggests, the title is deceiving. This isn’t an anime about high school prostitution. Wow, no. It’s simply about six guys and one girl in a club that entertains the girls of their high-brow high school.

The series is written by an up-and-coming artist named Bisco Hatori. As most anime goes, it started off in the comic world and evolved to the animation world. As we would with a book that was made into a movie, we suggest (if you are interested in pursuing this fandom at all) to read the comic before watching the anime. An animation only has 22 minutes to get across a story; a comic has as many pages as it wants to get across as many stories as it wants to its readers. In fact, although the series has peaked at 26, the comic is continuing in full swing, eight volumes already out in the U.S (about 10 in Japan). Now! Onto the characters before we bore you with the technicalities.

*~CHARACTERS~*

Haruhi Fujioka
The main heroine of the story, Haruhi is dragged in and made a host in the club in order to pay back her debt. She is considered a "special student" among her peers, because unlike all the other students in the school, she is able to attend Ouran because of her exceedingly good grades and not by money or social status. She's more often than not mistaken for a boy, which makes it much easier for her to play the role of a host. Haruhi quickly becomes a hit among the girls that attend the Host Club because of her natural, friendly ability. At first she thinks the idea behind the Host Club is a rediculous idea and dreads having to follow through with their events, but through the series, starts becoming closer friends with all the members of the club.

Tamaki Suoh
The founder and considered "King" of the Host Club. Tamaki is energetic, suave, and knows exactly how to treat a girl, making him one of the most popular hosts. He's also very dramatic, often making a big deal out of small things; whenever he is denied or his pride hurt in some way, he tends to sulk in corners. Or when something seems to go wrong, Tamaki tends to be very flaily and spazzy about it. Even with his comical ways, all the members of the Host Club respect him. Tamaki sees the club as a family, in a way, and often calls himself "Daddy", Kyouya the "Mommy", and Haruhi his "Daughter" (and then, at times, disregards everyone else, because he's a goober :P). Overall, the Host Club is his pride and joy, doing his absolute best to make everyone happy.

Kyouya Ohtori
Kyouya is the Vice President of the Ouran Host Club. Although quiet and behind-the-scenes-ish, he runs the club more than any of them can really say. He’s referred to as the “Dark Prince” (opposed to Tamaki’s title as King or Prince) and carries around a black ledger that he seems to take notes about everyone and everything in. He is the main reason Haruhi is stuck working at the Host Club. Money (and power) obsessed, Kyouya keeps close tabs on her debt during her time there. Despite that, Kyouya’s motives for helping start the club with Tamaki seem slightly skewed. Being the third son in a powerful family, he isn’t destined to inherit anything, yet expected to be just as good as his successful older brothers. He says that he is only in the club to help himself-to impress his father and gain connections with other important families-but sometimes seems to prove otherwise with his rare kind gestures and discreet care for the other members of the club.

Hikaru & Kaoru Hitachiin Who aren’t soul-less!!! I SWEAR!!
Hikaru and Kaoru are the (more or less) nefarious twins of the Ouran Host Club. First years like Haruhi, their main objective seems to be keeping themselves from dying of boredom. Their involvement in the club as hosts is unique to their situation; using their twin charms to the fullest, Hikaru and Kaoru use ‘brotherly love’ to get customers and whoo the girls who solicit them. Their strange plans and tricks seem to only be ploys to tide them over until they can find something more interesting to do. They see Haruhi as a toy to play with because of their narrow view of the world-“Us and Them.” Despite their ‘fun and games’ disposition, the twins both have a deep longing to be told apart. Their constant togetherness and careless or shameless behavior is only a defense mechanism to make themselves feel better about being considered one-person rather than two unique personalities (which are developed a lot throughout the story).

Mitsukuni “Honey” Haninozuka
Despite his size, Honey is the oldest member of the club. He acts very much like a young boy, using adorable antics to charm the girls of the club. He loves cakes and candy like no other, and is always, always eating something sweet. Honey always carries a stuffed rabbit with him, who he named "Usa-chan", and also gives all the members of the club nicknames as well. Much to people's surprise though, he is actually a martial arts master, the best in his family and in close competition with his younger brother Chika. Chika finds him to be a little odd (and alien with direct words) because of his cake obsession. To get more deeply into his cake-fixation, Honey never thought that cakes, sweets, or cute things were respectable for a martial artist, and thus deprived himself. Once he joined the host club, however, he was allowed to indulge his hidden desires without feeling the guilt.

Takashi “Mori” Morinozuka
Mori is the strong silent type in the host club. He rarely says much of anything, and only tends to take care of Honey (like carrying him around on his back and the likes). Mori has a background in Kendo and his family has a history with Honey’s family as having the sort-of ‘servant/master’ relationship (although that was a long time ago).

*~PLOT~*

Or lack thereof. Ouran High School Host Club is loosely held together by the basic premise: A girl, Haruhi, breaks a vase when trying to find a study room in the extensive school. The vase is so expensive (80,000 dollars in fact), she has to spend her after-school time working off the debt in the club. Because of a gum incident a few days earlier, Haurhi’s hair was cut short enough for her to be thought of as a guy (along with her very androgynous fashion sense). The club dresses her up in a proper school uniform (which she was too poor to afford) and decides she is going to work as a host.

The end. Other than that, the series is a sequence of short stories centered around the Host Club (who quickly decide they’d rather keep her to themselves than let her reveal her true gender) or individual characters. Its point is to develop the intricate stories of every character involved in the series, and develop the blooming love between Haruhi and several of the Host Club members (although it’s hard to tell if she’s interested in any of them…at all…). Without going into obsessive detail (which we totally could), Ouran Host Club is a fluffy, tame, and wayyy too cute to resist anime that anyone could get to like (yeah, even guys 8D).

*~EXTRA~*

Because Wiki hates Ouran’s guts and isn’t in the mood for providing the visual enhancers we wanted to go with the character descriptions, For Richer or Poorer is an interesting fan site with lots more info that we didn’t spew at you (like MORE character descriptions and PICTURES. OOOO~). They also have the two soundtracks to download (if you like classical music or voice actor songs~) and scans of the monthly installations to Lala magazine.

Also! YouTube! That fantastic site where just about anything is possible exists for free viewing of the show (not that torrenting it was a lot harder…or going to Crunchyroll.com)

Episode 1 Part 1
Epsiode 1 Part 2
Episode 1 Part 3

It’s not difficult to find EVERY EPISODE on here. They’re just in three parts.

Alright! Questions? Comments? Annoyed at anime? Well, get over it. Animation won't kill ya (or suck your brains, even though that'd be really cool to watch), so there's no reason to not give it a chance. ~The End~ *obligatory non-violent thumbs up yo*

Yes, it totally will kill me!

ANIMATION SUCKS MY BRAINS!

How would you like to be responsible for that?

But that just refreshed and minty feeling in my brain kinda tickles in the bad way!

I like having a nice dirty brain to play in. *pouts at you*
