Fandom Spotlight: Matilda

Hello Fandom, been awhile since you’ve heard from me I suppose. Sorry for posting late, most of my Sunday was gone by the time I remembered I hadn’t yet written this and I play DnD for 6 hours on Sundays. Regardless, today I’m spotlighting Matilda, the movie, since that’s the canon I’m following for her here at Fandom.

Main Characters:
Matilda: The lead character (of course) who was born with a massive amount of intelligence that was unnoticed, ignored and even mocked by her mother, father and brother.
Mr. and Mrs. Wormwood: Two very self-absorbed parents, who are mostly too busy and oblivious to notice Matilda’s intelligence. Mr. Wormwood sells used cars made from stolen car parts for very unfair prices and Mrs. Wormwood gambles and plays bingo most of the day.
The Trunchbull: The principal of Matilda’s school that believes in copious discipline and hates all children.
Miss Honey: Matilda’s teacher, she’s kind to everyone and immediately realizes Matilda’s potential and brilliance.

Plot:
Matilda was smart from the day she was born and the story begins with illustrating her parents constant neglect of her, and her increasingly obvious intelligence. Her family firmly believes in the virtues of the televisions ability for entertainment. She learns to take care of herself at a very young age because she’s left alone at home most days of the week. After reading all the magazines in the house, she uses the phone book to find the library and walks there alone everyday until she gets a library card, then begins to cart books home. She reads anything she can get her hands on, but never really able to find friends.

When she’s 6 and still not in school, she begins to notice she’s smart. She begins to gain some serious confidence in herself after her dad yells at her and imparts on her that “if a person is bad, that person should be punished.” She takes it upon herself to take revenge on him then, mixing bleach into his hair tonic and gluing his hat to his head. Her dad sells a car to The Trunchbull and gets Matilda enrolled as a student in her school.

During this time we see that the FBI is scouting out the Wormwood house, hoping for evidence enough to crack down on the dirty dealings of Mr. Wormwood, who sells used cars made of stolen car parts. Matilda notices, and though she tries to warn her family, they don’t believe her.

On her first day, Matilda immediately impresses her teacher, Miss Honey, with her math skills and reading level. She makes a few friends quite easily and learns about The Trunchbull. Miss Honey, after trying with both the Wormwoods and The Trunchbull to get resources, she begins to personally tutor Matilda with high level subjects. Matilda begins to discover her own powers when she’s being berated by The Trunchbull. She tries her theory and after discovering their cause, she beings to use her memories of being yelled at to train them until she’s got them completely under control.

Miss Honey tells Matilda one day that she’s the niece of The Trunchbull and that, after her father supposedly committed suicide, her house and money were all taken by her aunt. Matilda is appalled by this injustice and she and Miss Honey sneak into the house in order to get a look around and steal a doll Miss Honey lamented losing. The Trunchbull nearly catches them, and Matilda finds out she’s extremely suppositious.

Matilda makes a plan, and uses her powers to mess with The Trunchbull from outside her window. She moves the chair, sends shot put balls rolling down the stairs, flickers lights and sends the clock chiming. She is even ready when The Trunchbull visits her class the next day, hoping to find the culprit of the acts in her house. Matilda makes an assumption that accuses The Trunchbull of killing Miss Honey’s father and after a bit of different actions against her, the Turnchbull is run out of town by the students of the school.

Miss Honey takes control of her old home, money, and the school. After a month or so, Matilda’s parents are running from the authorities and planning to take Matilda with them as they fled the country. Matilda beg them to allow Miss Honey to adopt her, and they quickly sign the papers before leaving. She never sees them again and lives from that day on with Miss Honey.

Difference between the movie and the book?
Other than a few scenes and creative liberties, the big difference is that at the end of the book she loses her powers, and in the movie she’s living in America, whereas the book has her living in England. Other differences aside, I choose t movie canon for the above stated reasons.

As far as getting a hold of it, it’s now on DVD with a very cute couple of special features. One of them is Mara (Matilda’s actress) filming her own little documentary around the set and narrating. She shows off her trailer and things around the set, it’s very cute and pretty funny too, to hear her talking about making the movie.
