Spotlight on Fandoms: The 4400
So, my turn to try and explain my little fandom. I've tried to keep it as unspoilery as possible, but if you read this below the cuts, they'll be there.
The 4400 is a sci-fi series started airing back in 2004. The first miniseries was only five episodes long, something to keep us all from death by reality show over the summer break, I assume. Described as the X-files for a new generation when it first came out, even though there's actually a distinct lack of aliens, it’s still going four seasons on... which I find kind of amazing, actually.
"Abucted. Returned. Changed."
"Over the last century, thousands of people have gone missing. Suddenly and inexplicably, 4400 missing people are returned all at once, as they were on the day they vanished. Unclear on what this world altering event means, the government investigates the 4400 to piece together where they've been and why they've been returned.
It quickly becomes apparent that their presence will change the human race in way no one could have forseen."
The series follows the lives of some these 4400’s, and of the few NTAC agents assigned to monitor them. It manages to balance both the personal side of the characters, their adjustment to their new lives and their new abilities, and the action that ensues as a result of all of this.
There are intricate storylines, well written scripts and some pretty people, oh and there are some bizarre abilities to keep you entertained. Weight-loss saliva, anyone?
The most important thing to remember is that everything that happens, happens for a reason and the littlest things can have a big side-effect. The ripple effects are varied and numerous, and the future will be changed for the better as a result. They hope.
The 4400's:
Maia Rutledge - Conchita Campbell
She was the first one to be abducted in the 1930's at just eight years old. She was returned with precognitive abilities, and her tendency to tell people exactly what she sees often unnerves those unused to the accuracy and directness of her predictions.
She seems far older than her years and really just wants to be a normal little girl with a normal life. Typically, this just isn’t going to happen for her, and even when she tries to deny her ability, it still manages to filter through anyway.
Shawn Farrell - Patrick Flueger
Shawn and his cousin Kyle are first seen having a beer together on a beach near Seattle in 2001. We soon find out that Shawn was taken, while his cousin was left unconscious on the ground.
He returns with the ability of biokinesis. He can heal anything, and he can also drain life from beings. He's basically a good guy and somewhat naieve, and that can be his downfall. His judgment is sometimes a little impaired by his desire to do the right thing by everyone.
Jordan Collier - Billy Campbell
One of the most famous of the 4400's, Jordan made a lot of money in property before he was taken, and decides to create the '4400 Centre', a haven for any and all 4400's. He also ends up as a sort of father figure to Shawn.
He... is kind of a creep, to be honest. It's increasingly difficult to figure out just what his motivations are and the very fact the 4400 Centre ends up with a distinct cult feel to it makes you suspicious of him.
Richard Tyler - Mahershalalhashbaz Ali
Before he was abducted he was a US Air Force fighter pilot in Korean War. He was persecuted as a black man seeing a Caucasian woman named Lily Bonham. It so turns out, this was Lily Moore's grandmother.
During the early parts of the series he does not show any signs of any abilities. He is very loyal, and especially to Lily. He understandably feels a particularly strong attachment to her as he believes he is the father of her child. This one is never really confirmed, just sort of assumed.
Lily Moore - Laura Allen
Taken in 1992, she left behind her husband and a baby daughter. When she was retured over ten years later her family has moved on without her, and her husband wants nothing to do with her. She forms a close bond with Richard Tyler, who she discovers was involved with her grandmother many years before.
Lily never showed any signs of supernatural abilities. It did however turn out that she had become pregnant while she was gone. Her child always seems to be the cause of any strange occurences in her vicinity.
Isabelle Tyler - Megalyn Echikunwoke
Daughter of Lily Moore and Richard Tyler. Rather Mary-sue-ish in her way, she's the all powerful one, brought to save them all... or, something. We're still not actually quite clear on what it is she's really there for, in actuality.
Alanna Mareva - Karina Lombard
Alana was brought in mid-way through season two, a 4400 with the ability to create her own realities out of the memories of others. She can take other people into these realities, spend years there and have only mere moments pass in real time.
Tess Doerner - Summer Glau: A schitzophrenic send back with the ability to get people to do anything she wills them to. It is through her actions, that Kevin Burkhoff's mental illness is cured, and he is able to go on to investigate the 4400 and their abilities.
Kyle Baldwin — Chad Faust:
Kyle isn't technically one of the 4400, but his destiny is apparently still tied up with theirs. He was supposed to be, but then Shawn got all heroic and interrupted the process. Kyle was left comatose on the beach, only to wake up when Shawn returned and healed him three years later.
The NTAC Agents:
These are the agents from a section of the homeland security known as NTAC (national threat assessment command), the ones assigned to the case of the returnees. It is their job to keep an eye on them all and try and figure out just why it is they've been given these amazing abilities.
Tom Baldwin - Joel Gretsch
When we first meet Tom he is keeping a watch over his comatose son, Kyle. He's quite the man on a mission, and quit the government service two years ago, searching for answers to his nephew, Shawn's, disappearance and Kyle's subsequent comatose state.
He's incredibly determined, and very, very single minded. So much so that it has affected his relationship with his wife irreparably.
Diana Skouris - Jacqueline MacKenzie:
The Scully to Tom Baldwin's Mulder. She's the scientist, always looking for a reasonable explanation, and trying to find reason in the unexplainable. She treats the returnees much like a scientific experiment rather than people. That is until she meets Maia who wins her over. She soon changes her opinions and ends up taking her work home to live with her in the form of her adoption of Maia.
Dennis Ryland - Peter Coyote:
The main man behind NTAC, he is the one in charge for the first season, he is promoted and moves to Washinton DC sometime in the gap between the first and second seasons.
Nina Jarvis - Samantha Ferris:
Nina was brought in for season two to replace Dennis Ryland. She wasn't readily accepting of their style and keeps a closer eye on them than other field agents due to their personal involvement.
Marco Pacella — Richard Kahan:
The lab geek with a crush on Diana. He's the brains behind the tracking of the ripple effects of the returnees, and very much awesome.
Other Characters:
Danny Farrell — Kaj-Erik Eriksen: Shawn's younger brother.
Nikki Hudson — Brooke Nevin: Introduced as Danny's girlfriend, but actually ends up falling for Shawn.
April Skouris — Natasha Gregson Wagner: Diana's rather more carefree and morally liberal sister.
Kevin Burkhoff — Jeffrey Combs: He was a scientist, and friends with Tess while they were in the same mental institution. His condition improved dramatically, and he was released only to go on to research the 4400 and their abilities.
Matthew Ross — Garret Dillahunt: One of the 4400 centre employee, and Jordan Collier's right hand man. He’s another creep, and seems to have an agenda all his own.
The Clips:
Which 4400 ability would you want? I link this, purely because I find Patrick Flueger and Samantha Ferris' opinions so very amusing.

God, I have such <3 for Tess and Kevin. So damn much of it. And so very little for Isabelle. Baby!Isabelle was so much cooler.

Tess and Kevin and their slightly twisted relationship FTW. Their different variations of crazy just complement each other, in a most awesome way.
Heh, yeah. Most people I've spoken either don't care for, or have a sort of seething hatred for Isabelle. Pity that she's unlikely to regress back to a few months old again any time soon...

God, if only she could regress back. Like a cosmic "Okay, you're a bitch, grow up correctly and like an actual human this time."

Hee. My only wish for season four, is now that! ... um, and that they don't go crazy and kill off my boy, since being all comatose is rather too close to that for my liking.

And then, of course, I neglected to ever watch any more. But I think the DVDs are living downstairs, so I think I must ad this to my list of things I need to watch. My list is...very long.

I did watch the pilot of Farscape yesterday, though. Because of your post of yesterday, it's managed to skip to the front for the moment.
