Fandom Spotlight: 6teen
The Skinny
They're six teens, who are sixteen, starting their independent lives by finding jobs (in Jonesy's case, finding dozens of job), earning paycheques, falling in love, losing friends, the usual coming-of-age stuff.
6teen is a half-hour cartoon that ran two seasons (52 episodes) and two hour-long specials, with more episodes in the works (or so they say *crosses fingers*). It originally aired on Teletoon and YTV before being picked up by other networks, both in the States and overseas. There's already a French-language dub for Quebec (Jude's French name is Hugo – random info fact!). It was an experiment in a new style of animation that has now become quite common, especially in advertisements.
The Setting
Welcome to the Galleria Mall, home of 6teen. All the action in the series takes place in the mall. The specials have one scene each elsewhere, namely Jude's bedroom and the school gym. I've set the Galleria Mall in Toronto for two reasons: one, I know Toronto pretty well. Two, the design of the mall is heavily based on the Eaton's Centre, with a few elements of the West Edmonton Mall thrown in. The most blatant visual element lifted from the Eaton's Centre is the suspended flock of Canadian geese above the fountain. The show is definitely set in Canada, as they use Canadian money, Jen's Olympic dreams are played to 'O Canada', and in one episode Jonesy demands of Nikki, "You don't know how to skate? You're Canadian!"
The mall itself holds the usual food court, fountain, arcade, and theatre, as well as an indoor amusement park. The stores are all generally spoofs of actual stores, such as Albatross and Finch, the Khaki Barn, Burger McFlipster's (which is more a send-up of Lick's), Stereo Shack, etc. Some others are just ridiculous – like Pink and Frilly. Guess what that one sells?
The Characters
The Gang
Jonesy Garcia (Terry McGurrin): Jonesy is the Fonz of the group. His mind is on two things - the next girl and the next job. His inability to hold down a job for more than an episode is one of the running gags of the series (his resume is five pages long), as is his single pick up line, which ends "So I said to him, if that's a chai tea latte, I'm the Easter bunny." This is usually followed by him getting slapped. He has two younger brothers who are evil incarnate, and his father over the course of the series marries Jen's mother. He dated Nikki for a while, and the relationship was rocky but adorable. He dispenses relationship advice lavishly. He is the star hockey player for the school and cultivates his tough-guy image very carefully, despite his claustrophobia and fear of blood.
Jude Lizowski (Christian Potenza): Everyone's favourite skater dude. Likes skateboarding, heavy metal, extreme sports, and food on sticks. Has a tattoo on his ass. Currently employed as apprentice Zamboni driver at the rink. I have already prattled on about him far too much, so I will leave this here.
Wyatt Williams (Jess Gibbons): The soulful singer-songwriter of the group. Usually seen clutching a latte from Grind Me, Wyatt is the more cultured of the group and works hard to maintain this status. Wyatt has held down three jobs and one disastrous relationship that haunted him for most of the series. He started at the record store Spin This, worked with Jude at the Underground, and is currently an assistant manager at Burger McFlipster's, wooing the ladies with his charms and his singing.
Jen Masterson (Megan Fallenbach): Jen is driven, nosy, meddling, and over-achieving - possibly because of her older sister,Marcia Marcia Marcia! Courtney Courtney Courtney! Not to mention having to show up her three new step-brothers. She dreams of being on the Olympic snowboarding team and of starting her own line of snowboard gear. When it comes to school, she studies like Hermione. Currently works at the Penalty Box, but was once working at the Lemon. She gets naked three times and is thus close behind Jonesy when it comes to nudity.
Caitlin Cooke (Brooke D’Orsay): Caitlin may seem like a sweet yet ditzy blonde, but she's really . . . a sweet yet ditzy blonde. She's the most recent addition to the gang, having been forced to get a job after she maxed out the credit card her daddy, a rich lawyer, gave her. She has to repay her bill, which included two Vespas and Albatross and Finch's entire spring line. As ugly as the hat is, she works at the Big Squeeze, a lemon-shaped lemonade stand in the food court known colloquially as the Lemon.
Nikki Wong (Stacey Depass): Nikki is grumpy, sarcastic, cynical, and a secret DawgToy fangirl. Usual bearer of the Shovel Threat. Other than her rocky flings with Jonesy, she hasn't dated on the show except for a doomed crush on Hunter, who went out with Caitlin instead. Nikki despises consumer culture and trendy fashion, yet still manages to work at the Khaki Barn, where she has been for the entire show save one brief episode-long stint at the Stereo Shack under Darth - she refused to wear the bikini.
The Malldwellers
6teen has a huge rotating cast of extras who are often seen strolling through the background and occasionally are part of an episode's plot. Only some of them are listed below, because seriously. There's a bunch.
The Bosses
Big Steve: Four feet tall, wears a seventy-gallon hat. Owns a chain of Lemons. Obsessed with rodeo.
Coach Halder: Jen's boss at the Penalty Box. Shouts. Has a throbby vein in his neck. Punishes his employees with two-minute penalties or push-ups.
Wayne: Owner of the Underground. Based on Jack Black's character in 'High Fidelity'. Sarcastic and misanthropic, but has an encyclopedic, almost magical knowledge of movies. Despises the big studios. Will yell at you if you attempt to buy only one part of a trilogy.
The Significant Others
Starr/Nebula: Jude's long-time girlfriend, Starr was a total space cadet who worked at Vegan Island. Her mind works in mysterious ways and whatever she said came out of left-field – in other words, perfect for Jude. They met when Jude was mourning the sale of Betty, a vibrating chair on display at the Beep. Starr sympathized, crooning, "When my mom threw out my desk lamp, I cried for like, a week." However, they split up when Starr started hanging out with the gaggle of Goths. She became Nebula and Jude became Judas, but the Goth lifestyle wasn't for him and they broke up.
Serena: Wyatt's coworker and ex-girlfriend. They dated for three weeks and she dumped him because he wasn't mature enough for her. She is now dating Chad.
Talon/Hunter: Two of Caitlin's conquests. Her boyfriends are like Jonesy's jobs – they change almost every episode. Talon was special because she managed to give him second degree burns, break his nose, dislocate his shoulder, and hit him in the "kiwis" in the space of an episode, and he still wanted to date her. Unfortunately, he kisses like a German shepherd.
The Employees
Darth: Surprisingly, Darth is obsessed with Star Wars. He is a short, pimply, retainer-wearing nerd who accessorises with a black cape, black gloves, and a lightsaber. He is the manager of the Stereo Hut and insists that all his employees be trained Jedi. He had a crush on Nikki before finding true love in . . .
Julie the Taco-Girl: Wageslave at Wonder Taco and madly in love with Darth. Tendency to slur due to her retainer. Will willing wear the Princess Leia bikini for Darth, even if they temporarily broke up because they didn't have lightsaber battles any more.
The Clones: Nikki's coworkers at the Khaki Barn. Three blondes who dress identically and seem to share a braincell. Most often heard chirping, "Have a khaki day!"
Ron the Rent-a-cop: Ron, Ron, Ron. Ron is the arch-nemesis of the gang. Of, indeed, any teenager everywhere. Calling the under-twenty crowd collectively "Maggots!" Ron is a sadistic rent-a-cop who takes his job far too seriously. He's a Vietnam vet prone to war flashbacks (often send-ups of either 'Apocalypse Now' or 'Full Metal Jacket') and walks, acts, and sounds like Christopher Walken. He has codenames for the entire gang and keeps extensive files on each and every troublemaker. He also, apparently, has the power to revoke driver's licenses. When the gang harassed him into quitting his job, he worked at Pink and Frilly for a while.
Hiro: Owner of Super Happy Terrific Sushi and is wise in the ways of the ancient samurai arts and sushi preparation.
Chad: Laidback stoner dude who owns Spin This, the record store. Now dating Serena.

The Yummy Mummy: Clad in a low-cut black top and skin-tight, leopard print capris, this cougar prowls the mall with her bratty son in tow, hitting on anything male and attractive. Often this is, you guessed it, Jonesy. In fact, when Jonesy auctioned himself off for Valentine's Day, the Yummy Mummy would have had the winning bid except for . . .
The Gay Cowboy: Yes, he is, in fact, a gay cowboy. Why he is clad in full cowboy regalia from chaps to hat, or even why we can never see his entire face, this handsome stranger is always hitting on, yes, indeed, Jonesy. Also, he has been around since before 'Brokeback Mountain' came out.
Trish: Is best frenemies with Caitlin. When Caitlin had cash, they were tight, but when she donned the lemon Trish became a backstabbing, conniving b*tch. You know. That one girl in high school who everyone loved to hate? That's Trish.
The Kissing Couple: Attached at the lips. 'Nuff said.
Mike Dent: Jude's mortal enemy (and Wyatt's, kinda). A skateboarder with an ego the size of the CN Tower, Mike believed that he was better than Jude at, well, everything. He's a bully and a thief, shoving everyone around and calling Jude "bra" and "Loose-owski". Had his comeuppance when Jude (his skin dyed green from a mishap at the spa and dressed in a speedskating outfit) easily outstripped him in a race.
Rita: Crazy. Fondness for chickens and taxidermy. Thinks she's dating Jude and/or Wyatt. Will mistake anyone (including Wayne) for Jude and/or Wyatt.

Random Other Stuff
I'm often caught flailing and protesting "Kids show!" but I really don't have any defense. It may be a kids' show, but it's definitely intended for an older teen audience. There are constant sexual jokes (Jonesy), staring at breasts (Jonesy), and full frontal (if pixilated) nudity (Jonesy again). In one episode, Jonesy streaks through Grind Me and the Yummy Mummy lifts her camera, zooms in, and clicks.
There are so many pop culture references and jokes that it would be hard to pick them all out. Most titles are meta-ed ("Dumping Amy", "The 77th Samurai"), some are made up ("Dragon Thunder", "Ultimate Boardwarriors III", "Sneakin' Out II: The Sneakening."), but some are left pristine (see: Darth's entire life). Lindsay Lohaniggan is a constant topic of conversation among the boys, and the boyband DawgToy is the same among the girls.
And then, there's the Gay Stuff. I am not just watching with my slash goggles on. As well as the Gay Cowboy, Jude and Jonesy are sometimes . . . suspiciously close. If two male characters are in a compromising position, it will be these two. They share a tender moment while making pottery, a la Patrick Swayze and (chick) in 'Ghost'. Jude also has a tendency to end up in drag. A lot. As he moans once, "Why do I always hafta be the chick?"
The 6teen fandom is still, understandably, tiny. The most common pairings are Jonesy/Nikki, Jude/Jen, Jude/Wyatt, and Jude/Jonesy. Notice how much Jude shows up there? It's because for some unknown reason the fandom believes that Jude is a vodka-swilling, pot-smoking horndog who will molest his way into anyone's pants. I hate my fandom sometimes. *grumbles*
The 6teen voice actors (especially Jude's, Jonesy's, and Jen's) do a lot of commercial work, both television and radio. I hear Jude's voice everywhere, but was saddened to learn that most of the commercials he's in are only shown in Canada. Especially the one where he yells "Let's get naked!" in the middle of a grocery store. Christian Potenza is also the toothbrush sidekick of Listerineman.
