Spotlight on Fandoms - Power Rangers in Space
*waves* It's my turn again to do a Spotlight on Fandom and this time I'll be doing Power Rangers in Space.
Power Rangers in Space is the sixth season of the Power Rangers franchise that first aired in 1998 and it is based on the Japanese series Denji Sentai Megaranger. The series basically kept the franchise alive after the very bad run of Power Rangers Turbo and PRiS was supposed to be the last season but after getting strong ratings it allowed the show to continue. Power Rangers in Space deals with what happened after the four ex Turbo rangers (T.J, Carlos, Cassie and Ashley) took off into space to rescue Zordon after he had been captured by Dark Specter. They ended up meeting the Red Astro Ranger Andros and after some initial reluctance Andros gave them the four remaining Astro morphers so that they could become the new ranger team.
The Rangers:
Andros - Red Astro Ranger (Christopher Khaymen Lee):
Andros is the Red Astro Ranger from the human space colony KO-35. Prior to meeting with the four Terran Rangers he had been fighting Dark Specter on his own following the loss of his team and the evacuation of his home planet. At first he didn't want to join with the ex Turbo rangers to form a new team, preferring to continue going alone but he eventually reconsidered this and reluctantly agreed that he did need their help. Throughout the series one of his main goals was to find his sister Karone, who had been kidnapped when they were children. He eventually learned that it had been Darkonda who had kidnapped Karone and then he discovered that his sister was in fact their main enemy Astronema after he realised that she had the same locket that he did, which had photos of them as young children. Even after Karone had been brainwashed into becoming Astronema again Andros refused to believe that he had lost his sister for good. At the end of the series Andros destroyed Zordon's tubo (after Zordon told him that it was the only way for good to win) that resulted in an energy wave being released and thus it effectively destroyed the United Alliance of Evil. Andros was then reunited with Karone and they, along with Zhane decided to stay on KO-35 at first but they quickly changed their minds (Andros' love for Ashley played a big part in this) and they returned with the Terran rangers to Earth. Andros and the rest of the Astro Rangers (with the exception of Zhane) also helped the Galaxy Rangers defeat the Psycho Rangers and he later teamed up with several red rangers to help destroy Serpentera.
Theodore Jay Jarvis 'T.J' Johnson - Blue Astro Ranger (Selwyn Ward)
Prior to becoming the Blue Astro Ranger, T.J was the Red Turbo Ranger. After he and the other Turbo rangers chose to go into space following the destruction of their power chamber and Turbo powers and learning that Zordon had been captured, they ended up meeting Andros and T.J brecame the Blue Ranger and second in command of the Astro Team. T.J is courageous and fearless. Throughout the series T.J did occasionally take command of the team, particularly when Astronema promised to take the rangers to where Zordon was being held and Andros was the only one who wanted to trust her, the other rangers' believed that their leader was unable to make rational decisions that involved his sister . He also took command of the team when he developed a successful strategy to defeat another psycho ranger. Aside from aiding the Galaxy Rangers in defeating the Psycho Rangers, T.J also resumed his Red Turbo powers to help the red rangers destroy Serpentera.
Carlos Vallerte - Black Astro Ranger (Roger Velasco)
Before he became the Black Astro Ranger, Carlos had been the Green Turbo Ranger. Carlos is good natured and has a strong sense of loyalty and compassion. He was the first one out of the ranger team to learn about Andros' sister Karone (he had seen Andros looking at a clip of what had happened the day Karone had been kidnapped) and after Andros had been lured to KO-35 following a trap set by Ecliptor, Carlos went to help him even though he ended up being seriously injured in the fight. During one of the battles that he was in Carlos accidentally attacked Cassie and injured her, which led to him losing his confidence in his ability to be a power ranger and he resigned. After his predecessor, Adam, helped him when he was attacked and unsuccessful in stopping the monster on his own - Carlos told him about the doubts that he was having and Adam volunteered to help train him. He was eventually able to regain his confidence and he became a ranger again.
Cassie Chan - Pink Astro Ranger (Patricia Ja Lee)
Cassie is the Pink Astro Ranger, her colour designation never changed from when she was a Turbo Ranger. She puts a lot of faith in people and gives everyone a chance to prove themselves to her, this was seen when she realised that one of Astronema's monsters wasn't evil and he didn't want to be evil either, so she stuck by him. When the Astro Rangers went to help the Galaxy Rangers defeat the Psycho Rangers, Cassie nearly lost her own life after Pscyho Pink started draining her power. She was saved when the Pink Galaxy Ranger, Kendrix Morgan, sacrified her own life to save Cassie's.
Ashley Hammond - Yellow Astro Ranger (Tracy Lynn Cruz):
Ashley is the Yellow Astro Ranger and like Cassie she kept the same colour designation when she had been a Turbo Ranger. She is the one who provides the team a shoulder to lean on. Ashley is very caring and considerate and she has a bubbly and cheerful personality. From the start Ashley had fallen in love with Andros but it took Andros a while to ask her out on a date. When she formed a close friendship with his best friend Zhane, Andros became jealous and it was only after Ashley explained that her and Zhane were only friends that he asked her out.
Zhane - Silver Astro Ranger (Justin Nimmo):
Zhane is the Silver Astro Ranger and like Andros he comes from the space colony KO-35. He was badly injured during the battle that saw the evacuation of KO-35 and in order to keep him alive Andros had placed him moprhed inside a cryogenic chamber. At first this became a problem because after he was released from the chamber he was only able to stay morphed for no more than two and a half minutes. Not long after he joined the Astro Rangers, the team came across a group of Karovan rebels and after an initial misunderstanding (made worse by Darkonda who had infiltrated the rebels hiding place) Zhane decided to stay with the rebels for a while but he later rejoined the team. During the series Zhane developed a crush on Astronema after he rescued her when she was attacked by her own monster, Astronema had also become attracted to Zhane but after he was late to a date that she had arranged she wasn't interested in continuing the relationship.
Villains:
Astronema/Karone (Melody Perkins):
Astronema is the Princess of Evil and the rangers' main enemy. She was given command of the Dark Fortress and sent to destroy the Red Ranger after he had managed to get away from a meeting in which he learnt Dark Specter's plan to drain Zordon of his power. In the series Astronema learnt that she was the Red Ranger's long lost sister Karone, even though that she had been told that the Power Rangers had destroyed her family, and after she returned to the good side she was made an honorary power ranger. This was only short lived though because after Dark Specter sent an asteroid to destroy Earth following her desertion to the good side, Karone snuck on board as Astronema in the hope of reprogramming the asteroid but she was caught by Ecliptor (who had been reprogramed) and as a result she was reprogrammed to be Astronema. In the final battle Astronema became the Queen of Evil following Dark Specter's destruction. She was briefly killed after Andros deflected her energy bolt back at her but a combination of Zordon's energy waves and Andros' tears saw her being turned back into Karone. Karone made the decision to live on Earth with her brother, Zhane and the other Astro Rangers. Later on she ended up leaving to find Kendrix's Quasar Saber and Kendrix chose her to be the Pink Galaxy Ranger.
Ecliptor (voiced by Lex Lang):
Ecliptor is Astronema's second in command and is the closest thing to a father figure that Astronema had. He was given the task of raising Karone to become Astronema and as a result he became very protective of her, he was more interested in keeping her safe then using her for evil. After Astronema found out that she was Andros' sister, Ecliptor attempted to keep her from getting close to him but when she ended up helping the rangers' escape after she had lured them into a trap, he let her and the other rangers' go even though he ended up being captured. Ecliptor was reprogrammed by Darkonda and became evil again. At the end of the series he was destroyed by Zordon's energy wave.
Darkonda (voiced by Steve Kramer):
Darkonda is a bounty hunter and he is the one responsible for kidnapping Karone when she was a child. Throughout the series Darkonda died several times but due to the fact that he had nine lives he was able to regenerate each time he was destroyed. Darkonda was Ecliptor's rival and he attempted several times to destroy both Ecliptor and Astronema. At the end of the series, when he only had one life left, he managed to destroy Dark Specter but before Dark Specter was destroyed the Grand Monarch discovered Darkonda's betrayal and was able to destroy him as well.
Dark Specter (voiced by Christopher Cho):
Dark Specter is the Grand Monarch of all Evil and the one responsible for Zordon's capture. He chose Astronema to destroy the Astro Rangers and was determined that they would never be able to rescue Zordon. In the final episode he initiated a final invasion that saw Earth, Aquitar, Triforia, KO-35 and the Phantom Ranger's homeworld being attacked. He was finally destroyed by Darkonda when he was struck by a planet destroying missile.
Elgar (voiced by Derek Stephen Prince):
Elgar is Divatox's nephew and he was only reluctantly allowed to remain on the Dark Fortress after he told Astronema that Dark Specter had sent him and that he had said she needed him. Elgar was one of the many villains who were destroyed at the end of the series.
Psycho Rangers
The Psycho Rangers were the evil counterparts of the Astro Rangers and they proved to be the most difficult villains for them to destroy. Astronema initially had intended to use them so that she could take over the United Alliance of Evil, as the Psycho Rangers were connected to Dark Specter's powers which resulted in him experiencing a great power loss each time they battled, but they were impatient and unwilling to follow her orders as they were desperate to destroy their counterparts. The Psycho Rangers were destroyed before Dark Specter was. When the spectral forms of the Psycho Rangers returned to life, the Rangers managed to defeat them by turning them into data cards. They were restored by Deviot with the purpose of destroying the Galaxy Rangers but when the Astro Rangers teamed up to form a ten ranger team the Psycho Rangers were finally defeated.
Supporting Characters:
Alpha 6 (voiced by Wendee Lee):
Alpha 6 went with the rangers into space and lived on the Astro Megaship. He remained on the Astro Megaship after it became a museum and he later assisted the Galaxy Rangers.
D.E.C.A (voiced by Julie Maddalena):
D.E.C.A is the Astro Megaship's computerized operating system and she controled the ship's functions, managed security and responded to verbal commands.
Zordon (Robert L. Manahan):
Zordon, the original mentor of the rangers, had been captured by Dark Specter where the Grand Monarch of Evil intended to drain his powers. After Andros found him on the Dark Fortress Zordon told Andros that he had to destroy his energy tube. Even though Andros was greatly reluctant to do this, he shattered the tube and the pure good of Zordon's energy wave was enough to destroy the United Alliance of Evil.
Bulk (Paul Schrier) and Skull (Jason Narvy)
Bulk and Skull became assistants to Professor Phenomenous Ingenious and they rather reluctantly follow his plans in an effort to find life on Earth. When the professor went to space onboard Terra Venture, Bulk was the only one to go with him, with Skull remaining behind on Earth.
Professor Phenomenous Ingenious (Jack Banning):
Professor Phenomenous Ingenious is a nutty professor who is convinced that he will find alien life on Earth. Most of his attempts ended up backfiring and becoming failures. He eventually became a citizen onboard Terra Venture and took his research with him.
Adelle Ferguson (Aloma Wright):
Adelle is the owner of the Surf Spot and her establishment is where the Rangers often hang out when they have the chance to. She has a very tough love attitude and she has taught customers many valuable lessons on life.
Where can I get it?
You can find the majority of the episodes of Power Rangers in Space on youtube. Even though it hasn't been released as a whole series on DVD, if you're interested I recommend buying the Best of the Power Rangers - Ultimate Rangers DVD, since it has episodes that feature the Astro Rangers. The DVD has the series finale - Countdown to Descrution part 1 and 2, the Space Rangers/Galaxy Ranger team up - To the Tenth Power and it also has the episode Forever Red.
