Spotlight on Fandoms: How I Met Your Mother
How I Met Your Mother, as understood by
suit_of_awesome and
canadianpopstar.
Let’s refer to it as HIMYM from here on out because I’m a lazy typer, k?
PREMISE
HIMYM is a sitcom told in stories. That sounds confusing, huh? It’s really not. Ted Mosby (our main character and would-be protagonist) begins the first episode of the show off-screen and using Bob Sagat’s voice to tell his teenage son and daughter the story of how he met their mother. Of course, to do this, he has to tell them years and years worth of stories about the friendships and failed relationships that set him on the path to their mom. This is how there are (starting TOMORROW OMG) three seasons of Ted totally not actually meeting their mother. Yet.
SEASON ONE
In the pilot, Marshall proposes to Lily and Ted meets Robin via Barney’s “Have you met Ted" line. They go on a date wherein Ted professes that he LOVES Robin. Because he is incredibly stupid. Thankfully, Robin is so not there for a deep relationship while Ted is looking for OMG 'The One.'
As the season progresses, Ted STILL LOVES Robin. Ted dates cupcake girl, aka Victoria and they have really hysterical affection that Lily and Marshall mock beautifully. Barney is Awesome, takes Ted to the airport to pick up chicks, licks the Liberty Bell, and has his Get Psyched mix cd stolen by Not!Moby. Barney and Robin bond over cigars, laser tag, picking up chicks, and battleship.
Meanwhile, Marshall and Lily spend a lot of time planning a wedding that doesn’t happen because Lily starts to feel she’s not experienced enough of life and goes to California on a painting fellowship. Ted gets Robin but screws it up and eventually gets her again. Theirs is the stuff of legends.
SEASON TWO
So, after Ted finally annoyed Robin into dating him, and Lily went off to be a flake out in San Francisco, we started out the season with depressed!Marshall and irritatingly happy!Ted.
Lily returned in the second episode, with....wait for it....DARKER HAIR. DUN DUN DUN. ALYSON HANNIGAN AS A BRUNETTE, YO. IT IS SHOCKING. Despite the awesome new hair, however, Lily and Marshall decided they still needed some time apart, to be single for awhile and figure out if they still want to get married.
Meanwhile, Ted and Robin spent the season going through the normal hurdles of coupledom -- first fight, first time the normal person in the relationship says 'I love you,' (since SOMEONE said it in the pilot and wow Ted maybe that's why she didn't want to date you?), talk of moving in together.
Both couples hit some huge milestones by the end of the season, though the fate of Robin and Ted was written out in the pilot anyway, and our IG Robin is a walking spoiler.
And, of course, season two saw some great Barney-ness, including a first look at his apartment when Lily temporarily moved in with him, a deeper glance at his family (his brother is Wayne Brady, and his father is Bob Barker), and a delightful form letter for one-night stands.
THE CHARACTERS
The Regulars
Ted Mosby: (Josh Radnor) The protagonist, of sorts, Ted is the guy telling his kids in the year 2030 (and by then, he's miraculously changed from Josh Radnor into Bob Saget) about how he met their mother. When we meet young!Ted, he's 27, and his best friends are getting married, which drives him to try to find The One and settle down. In the pilot, he meets Robin and immediately tells her he loves her, and the end of the episode reveals that Robin is not the kids' mother. But still. First date. I Love You. Ted tends to be a bit overly idealistic and romantic, and as a result often makes terrible decisions. He's also an architect. The ladies love it.
Marshall Eriksen: (Jason Segel) Marshall is many things: a law student, the smallest in a family of giants, a straight pirate, and Ted’s BFF. Marshall is also a slap bet winner, the owner of an absurdly expensive suit, and an intern at Barney’s company. Oh, right, and he loves Lily to the degree of calling her by disgusting pet names that are incredibly endearing.
Lily Aldrin: (Alyson Hannigan) Lily is an artist-type chick who cracks dirty jokes despite being wee and adorable and a kindergarten teacher. No matter what’s going on, fights with Marshall included, Lily’s all about the sex. She’s only had two boyfriends that we know about – Marshall and Scooter. Don’t worry, Scooter might have gotten into the lobby of the Empire State Building, but he never made it to the top. This show and euphemisms, what can I say?
Robin Scherbatsky: (Cobie Smulders) Robin is a television reporter for a little-watched network, and as a result, she gets most of the minor beats for the early part of the season. This leads to things like Barney daring her to say random things on TV, because she can. Robin lives with her five dogs in Brooklyn, and is terrified of commitment and marriage, protesting that she doesn't want to settle down when she's still so young. Robin is snarky, way more practical than Ted, and a cigar afficionado. Oh, and Canadian. And in her youth, she was a pop star with one minor hit - "Let's Go to the Mall." Yeah. It's great.
Barney Stinson: (Neil Patrick Harris) Barney is Awesome McAwesomesauce. Barney is a suit-wearing confirmed bachelor with a gambling problem, love of laser tag, and really great catch phrases. Barney is wealthy and has a high-paying job, though none of his friends know what he does, even Marshall who works with him. Barney does what he wants and coerces others to join him regularly, but he's a good guy, don’t get him wrong. He flew to California to tell Lily she was being an idiot and should come back to Marshall because they belong together or something. He deeply believes Bob Barker is his father but didn't tell him such when he had the opportunity. It was sweet, damnit! He's a former sensitive eco-friendly folk singer-type with long hair, Birkenstocks, and a hippie-poncho until some girl screwed him over and caused him to go all Darth Vader and became the Barnacle we all know and love. Those were more phrases than sentences, but I’m cool with that.
The Special Guest Stars
Sandy Rivers: (Alexis Denisof) Sandy is Robin’s co-anchor on the news. He’s known for literally reading the newspaper to viewers and pointing out interesting bits. Robin brings him as her date to an awards banquet and his awesome helmet hair is never the same.
Victoria: (Ashley Williams) Victoria aka Buttercup meets Ted at a wedding where she baked the cake. She shows up long enough for her and Ted to be all schmoopy and decide to and decide to have a long distance relationship. Without sex with other people, which Barney does not approve of. Ted decides he’s going to break up with Victoria but doesn’t until after he’s had the opportunity to get with Robin. Stupid, stupid boy.
James Stinson: (Wayne Brady) Barney’s gay brother is “the awesomest, most best-lookingest, greatest guy ever!" according to Barney. According to Lily he’s, “just like Barney." He is Barney's best wingman ever and shows us Barney's softer side when he tells Barney he's adopting a baby with his partner. Apparently marriage is okay if Barney gets to be an uncle.
Chloe: (Morena Baccarin) The cute barista who finds Marshall to be insanely funny (really, Marshall?), and who is evidently hard-of-hearing, as she is the first to call Barney by his legen....dary new name of Swarley. It stuck. *adds* She is also the girl with the crazy eyes.
Virginia and Alfred Mosby: (Cristine Rose and Michael Gross) Ted's parents, who did not really communicate for like thirty years because it was unpleasant, and who got divorced in secret almost a year before telling their children. Also, Virginia has two secret sons in New York who can fly and save cheerleaders and stuff. And she's also Rory Gilmore's paternal grandmother! The meta, it burns. *randoms*
Hammond Druthers: (Bryan Cranston) He's a jackass that Ted has to deal with at work. He's obnoxious and 'accidentally' designed a building that looked like a giant penis.
The guy who works with Chloe: (Tom Lenk) I remember nothing about him except that his name is different than what's on his nametag, and he's played by Andrew so I automatically remember him. He's credited as "Guy" on IMDB. You should all thank me for my research. *does so*

*lets out breath* So! That is HIMYM in a tiny little nutshell. Hey, it could've been a lot longer. Any redundancies are totally my fault as the wonderful
canadianpopstar was willing to do half the work but I wasn't will to edit it together. Much.

2) I'm sure you know by now that Alexis's character was based on a real person. But on the odd chance you did not, I mention it. =)
