Weekly Entertainment

In the interest of giving us a place to chat for those who can't use AIM at work or just want to babble about things OOC for fun, I'll be putting up a weekly entertainment post in the OOC every Sunday. Feel free to respond all week, chat amongst yourselves, go off on tangents, be completely ridiculous, make crack icons, donate to your local animal shelter, or any other off the wall behavior that involves being awesome and fun.

To get things rolling though, here's a question:

Anybody have any interesting hobbies (other than RP)?

I was just thinking about it since a random post in the open forum ended up in me and another player going "ZOMG ANOTHER KNITTER!" and that was really awesome.

Oh my gosh, I've been wanting to learn to stepdance for years and years and years now. But I keep telling myself that I'd end up tripping horribly all over my own feet, and then I never get around to it. Coordination and I are not good friends.

Another knitter over here, though I'm really still in the beginner phase. I'm not really that good at it (yet), but I did manage to knit a pair of baby booties for a friend's baby shower.

And if staying up late to read and edit Wikipedia is a hobby, well, then I do that too.

[identity profile] just-add-starch.livejournal.com 2008-07-20 04:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I...do not knit. I tried crocheting once, got frustrated and finished nothing. One day!

I'm actually big on camping when the weather's nice and gas prices aren't so OH MY GOD, MY EYES. Most recently, I was down in Manteo, NC (near Hatteras) and it rained but omg, beautiful down there. Most of the them, I'll go up into NoVa (Shenandoah area) if I want to camp since it's not that long of a drive.

I'm always kind of a weather geek as in I obsessively check the weather, track hurricanes (not to the extent I have charts and stuff) and consistently check forecasts of other countries.

Me == so very much NOT a knitter, because I have coordination issues, and space-out-and-lose-count issues, and this miraculous ability to touch anything that resembles a cord or string and turn it into a HOPELESS IRREVOCABLE TANGLE almost on the spot. -_-

My weirdest hobby is probably collecting reusable cloth shopping bags. I am not kidding -- the spare tire compartment of my trunk (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v383/shaniezak/Week%20in%20the%20Life%202/Day%206/SDC10114.jpg) is packed full of them. And I'm fairly sure I've picked up a half dozen more since that picture was taken two months ago. And other people buy me some from stores that don't exist where I live. Or share articles about neat ones with me on Google Reader just to drive me crazy.

I also have a thing for geeking out over floor care appliances -- vacuums and steam cleaners and such -- which I couldn't explain if I tried. Honestly no idea what in the world is up with that but I can be at Fry's to buy, like, blank CDs and a mousepad and I have to stop by the appliances section to go "ZOMG, Dyson vacuum WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANT."

I, um. Mod My Little Ponies. Mostly cheap dollarstore fakie ones. I can crochet, but go through huge years-long spurts of not being inclined. And I photomanip. A lot. Basically I have no artistic ability whatsoever, but I love to play with stuff. Drawers full of paint and Sculpey and beads-for-necklaces that I mess with intensely for a onth or so and then shove away for a few years so I'm not sick of the sight of them.

I have a 1-year-old. All the time that used to go to my hobbies (which tend toward the music-and-reading end of the spectrum, as I have no patience and thus cannot knit), goes to her.

I hope she's grateful :-).

I haven't really had the time to do any hobbies this summer because of RL stuff but,uh...does playing Rock Band and Guitar Hero count as a hobby? I'm pretty good. And I can sing Bon Jovi like nobody's business. My little sister has been watching the Game Show Network all summer so I've become extremely good at that. Especially Jeopardy and Match Game. I can pretty much read Richard Dawson's mind.

I do like exploring cities during the summer. I live about an hour away from Baltimore and D.C. and sometimes when gas prices aren't crazy I like to go down (or up) there and wander. I really like to drive for some reason.

Oh, and I've got one of those Psych-like memories so in high school I used to read the cards to Trivial Pursuit and then challenge people to play and they would think I was a genius or something. Really I was just a cheater.

I have no hobbies, not because I don't like trying new things, but because I am easily distracted and tend to move on to something new and shiny very quickly.

People have mocked me because I can't just sit and watch TV or a movie, I have to be doing something. Now the something is FH, but before I was sucked in I: knitted, did needlepoint, played sudoku, or did crosswords. None of these obsessions lasted all that long.

OH OH! And now I icon hunt! That so counts as a hobby!

Um, and I ramble?

I do not knit. Mostly because I'm 95% sure any attempt will result in me knitting myself *into* whatever I'm trying to make.

I do vid, though. Not terribly prolific-ly, and it's been years since I actually *finished* something (I blame the timesuck that is FH). But I have a few projects on the go atm.

I swim a lot too- spent ten years doing speed swimming and synchronised swimming competitively. These days I'm looking for a Masters club that's got a schedule I can work with, but until I do, I'm just going to the pool when I can.

I would like to join the "I do not knit" club. I tried crochet, as I have a pattern for a wombat, and failed. So much fail. I even picked neon pink, so I could claim it was a mutant wombat, and yeah. Not so much. Anyone want the pattern?

I am a freelance theatre artist, and while that started as a hobby, it has become a second full-time job. I stage manage, house manage, run boards, and occasionally do design work if someone bribes well asks nicely.

For actual hobbies, I go swing dancing and play WoW. FOR THE HORDE!

So, I wasn't really sure if I had any hobbies, per say, in the strictest sense of the word until I started reading (because I don't know if writing I could really consider a hobby since I plan to make it a career...eventually) and then I realized:

ICON MAKING!

I still kind of suck, but, hey, I'm willing to pimp my comm to anyone who'll be willing to be pimped at. Especially since I'm always taking suggestions for pretty things to icon. Not that my characters don't provide enough, but, sometimes, I should probably icon things other than Zooey or Cillian or Bleach...

Um, I also collect a butt ton of Alice in Wonderland stuff. I'm currently up to about 13 different publications, including one from the 1930s *drooool*

I don't have any particular hobbies. I just end up doing things like... playing games (Fable at the moment, I'm holding my breath for Diablo 2 and then there's way too many Dash games). Or I watch a certain fandom. Someone at work got me watching Babylon 5 right now.

Sometimes I'll mess around with Photoshop or I'll try to mess around with layouts for my ljs. Stuff like that. Just nothing specific.

I also knit! I am a very very beginner knitter. I have to date finished, um, one scarf. And it's too short. But whatever, I finished it and am duly proud of it.

My second scarf I started, got quite a ways on, then did something stupid I couldn't fix and kept making worse, so I got mad at it and frogged it and now it's a ball of yarn I glare at and vow to start back on. You know. Some day.

I also cook. I bake a lot. Except I've been kind of depressed and crushed under the sucking load of work that is summer classes lately, so I've mostly been eating, like, peanut butter and crackers because I don't have the energy to cook. Which is a damned shame because my mom brought me a bunch of green beans and zucchini from somebody's garden and they're just sitting in my fridge. *smacks self*

Oh, and I used to ride horses! But I can't find anywhere to ride here.

At one time or another, I've collected rocks, shells, dolls, trading cards (of both the sports- okay, hockey- and TCG variety), action figures, pins, My Little Ponies, porcelain masks, troll dolls, Lego sets, Kinder Surprise toys (I'm sad I know), stuffed animals, coins, Beanie Babies, figurines based on random criteria (it's been frogs or jade things in the past. Currently, it's inukshuks. Which are of course damn near everywhere these days.)... and now I work in a post office. This will end well, I'm sure. The stamps, they caaaaaall to me.

My collecting tendencies have even been the death of a few former hobbies- I used to bead, but eventually it got to the point where I'd go to the store and buy so many cool and interesting beads... and then I'd never want to part with them. Same with making bracelets out of embroidery thread. Yet another reason I am reluctant to get into knitting- I'd just end up hoarding yarn.

Not sure if this is a hobby, but I do enjoy collecting music from tv shows I watch. I also enjoy iconning and making graphics. Photoshop is love.

. . . mmmm, you have music from Life.

I knew that, but still, mmmmmmmm, Life.

I'm learning to knit! I have made one whole scarf and two half scarves! And I adore cooking, but I live on my own and cooking for one is kind of blah.

I used to breed and show fancy mice? Now I just have pet ones, but they're sort of like a hobby. They take a lot of attention, anyway.

Umm, I also collect Chucks. Like, a lot of Chucks. Here, have a photo (http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh68/fhcollective/P4071160.jpg). There's about three more pairs since that was taken. It is LIKE A SICKNESS.

I am totally jealous of your collection of Chucks.

I miss the days before Converse got bought by Nike when I could buy Chucks for $20 instead of $40 or $50...

I knit and crochet. I used to play fiddle at Renaissance Faires but I haven't done much of that lately. I suppose reading and watching TV are sort of a given around here? Yeah.

Oh, I also have started making bento lunches for myself so I'm currently experimenting with Japanese cooking and trying to adapt it to my own picky tastes.

I knit.

And costume and read and spend way too much time reading design blogs.

Also I knit while I work. This is a beautiful thing except for the fact that my wrists hurt after 10 hours straight of knitting.
