Spotlight on Fandoms - Hellboy
Sorry for getting this up so late. I'm back doing another spotlight and this time I'm doing Hellboy again, the last time I did it only the first movie had been released and here's the link to my old one.
General Overview:
Hellboy is a comic book series that was created by Mike Mignola and it was turned into a feature film by director Guillermo del Toro, that saw the first film being released in 2004 and the sequel (The Golden Army) being released this year.
Hellboy 1:
The first Hellboy movie starts in an island off the coast of Scotland in 1944. It shows the Nazis working with Russian mystic Rasputin, with the help of Rasputin's lover Isla and Hitler's top assassin Kroenan, in their attempt to open a dimensional portal to call on the Seven Gods of Chaos to help them win the war. However just as they open the portal a team of American soldiers led by Paranormal expert Professor Trevor Broom manage to stop them, resulting in a battle that sees Rasputin killed and Isla and Kroenan escape. While the army surveys for any signs that something may have escaped the portal, a bright red baby demon is found and is affectionately given the name 'Hellboy'.
Sixty years later, a young FBI agent John Myers, is transferred to the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense run by Professor Bruttenholm. He is introduced to Hellboy, now an adult. Also employed with the BPRD is a fish-like person named Abe Sapien who has advanced psychic abilities, and Liz Sherman, a pyrokinetic who has yet to learn to control her firestarting abilities. Liz has recently left the bureau (for the thirteenth time) and checked herself into a mental hospital in an effort to protect others from her talent. Despite regular visits and coaxing from Hellboy, who appears infatuated with her, she is determined not to return.
Meanwhile, Kroenen and Ilsa resurrect Rasputin. Rasputin and his companions travel to New York nd the Machen Library of Paranormal Artifacts. There, they open a display and, through magic, release a demon known as Sammael; a hell-hound with a distinct Lovecraftian appearance. Rasputin imbues Sammael with the power to reincarnate and split his essence, causing two of the creature's "eggs" to hatch and mature in seconds each time one dies. Rasputin then visits Liz as she sleeps, reactivating her powers and causing the near-total destruction of the hospital. Afterwards, Myers talks to her, and convinces her to return to the bureau, at least for the short term.
The multiplying Sammael quickly becomes a major problem, as Hellboy repeatedly kills it, creating dozens. Abe is injured during an attempt to retrieve some of their eggs, and Kroenen kills one of the FBI agents sent with Hellboy, and Sammael kills the other 2 agents. Kroenen, whose ancient body is now run by mechanisms, then shuts himself down and pretends to be defeated just before Hellboy arrives. Kroenen's 'corpse' is brought to the bureau for examination. FBI Director Tom Manning, is angered by Hellboy's recklessness, which he feels is indirectly responsible for his agents' deaths. Hellboy gets mad and threatens Manning just as Liz returns, almost causing her to leave again just as quickly. Myers, in an effort to help her overcome her difficulties with Hellboy, takes her out for coffee and to talk. Hellboy, jealous, covertly follows them.
While they are away, Rasputin appears at the bureau, reanimating Kroenen before they confront Professor Bruttenholm. Out of twisted respect for Bruttenholm's protection and nurturing of Hellboy, Rasputin promises him a quick death, but first offers him a vision of the future, showing Hellboy is the agent that has destroyed the world. Rejecting Rasputin's vision of Hellboy's destiny, Bruttenholm is stabbed in the neck and, clutching a rosary, collapses and dies.
Manning takes over the BPRD and, with the help of Hellboy and the others, manages to find Rasputin's physical body located in a mausoleum in an old cemetery outside Moscow, Russia. An enranged Hellboy, with Manning's help, destroys Kroenen once and for all, to avenge the death of his "father", Professor Bruttenholm. Telling Manning to stay back, Hellboy reunites with Liz and Myers at Sammael's nest to defend them, but the hellhounds overwhelm him. In an effort to help, Liz, with some encouragement from Myers, ignores the fear that has prevented her from unleashing her full potential and uses her pyrokinetic powers to encase herself in blue fire, which she uses to incinerate the army of Sammaels and all the eggs. Unfortunately, this effect renders Hellboy, Liz, and Myers unconscious and they are captured by Rasputin.
To force Hellboy to release the Ogdru Jahad, Rasputin sucks Liz's soul out of her body and tells Hellboy that Liz will only come back to life if he complies. Hellboy, not wanting to lose Liz, awakens his power as Anung un Rama (Beast of the Apocalypse), causing his horns to regrow. He nearly releases the Ogdru Jahad, but an injured Myers reminds him of who he is and that he has the right to choose his own path. e snaps off his horns, returning to his former self and resealing the Ogdru Jahad. As Rasputin screams his frustration and disappointment at Hellboy, Hellboy stabs him in the heart with one of his broken horns.
However, Rasputin has one last trick up his sleeve: he is possessed by a demon from the Ogdru Jahad. The tentacled Behemoth bursts out of Rasputin's body, grows to immense size, and destroys Rasputin and Ilsa. Hellboy grabs a stone sword from a nearby statue and attacks the Behemoth's tentacles, then allows himself to be swallowed while detonating a belt of live hand grenades. The subsequent explosion tears the Behemoth apart from inside, killing it. Liz's vital signs are gone when Hellboy returns from the fight, but he whispers into her ear, and suddenly her life is restored. When she asks how her soul was returned, Hellboy replies that he simply told the creatures from the other side the cost of taking her: "Hey, you on the other side. Let her go. Because for her I'll cross over, and then you'll be sorry." She and Hellboy kiss as she surrounds them in blue flame, and the narrator, Myers, says that what truly makes a man is "Not how he starts things, but how he decides to end them."
Hellboy 11:
Hellboy 11: The Golden Army picks up a few years after where the first one left off. It starts with Professor Broom reading a bedtime story to a young Hellboy, the story he reads him is about an ancient battle between humans and mythically creatures, that saw the 'Golden Army', an unstoppable clockwork, being created by a goblin blacksmith for Balor, the Prince of Elves but the army could only be controlled by those of royal blood providing that no one challenged their right to do so. The army consisted of 4900 "70 times 70 soldiers" and it devastated humans so mercilessly that Balor forged a truce to stop the bloodshed, man would keep the cities and they would keep the forests. Balor's son, Prince Nuada, didn't agree with the truce and so he left in exile. The crown that controlled the army was broken into three pieces, one piece went to the humans and two went to the elves, so that the Golden Army couldn't be raised again.
During the present, Nuada decides to declare war on the humans, stealing the first piece of the crown from an auction and killing his father for the second, his twin sister escaped with the final piece. Meanwhile Hellboy is having relationship troubls with his girlfriend Liz and he is also having trouble dealing with the fact that the BPRD has to remain a secret. He ends up allowing himself to be exposed to the outside world during a mission to eradicate thousands of ravenous tooth faires, which Nuada set loose while he took the first piece of the crown. In the middle of the commotion Abe accidently discovered that Liz was pregnant. As Washington was furious with the public unveiling, they sent a by-the-book agent, the ectoplasmic Johann Krauss to take command. With Krauss in charge, the team tracks the tooth faires to the Troll market, an enourmous city hidden under the Brooklyn Bridge, for clues. Abe stumbles into Nuala, who has obtained a map leading to the Golden Army, during their search and quickly falls in love with her following a brief psychic encounter. She is brought to the BPRD for protection following an attack by Mr. Wink and a forest elemental. During this elemental fight, Hellboy starts to question whether it is right to fight for the humans when he is also a mythical creature.
Nuada tracks his sister to the BPRD by using their magical bond, which causes them to share wounds and read each others' thoughts to an extent. When Nuala senses her brother's arrival, she burns the map, along with the canister that it came in and hides the final piece of the crown in one of Abe's books. However the real map is on the canister, with which it came. Nuada kidnaps his sister and mortally wounds Hellboy with his spear. As they are unable to remove the spear, Johann, Liz and Abe take Hellboy to the location of the Golden Army hidden in Northern Ireland. They encounter the goblin that oversaw the creation of the Golden Army and he brings them before the Angel of Death, who has been waiting for their arrival. Even though she is told that Hellboy would doom humanity if he lives and that she'll suffer the most from it, Liz still pleads for Hellboy not to die. Amused by her choice, the Angel of Death removes the spear from Hellboy's chest and tells Liz to give him a reason not to die. She reveals to Hellboy that he's going to be a father and he recovers.
The Goblin leads them to the resting place of the Golden Army, where Nuada awaits them. In exchange for Nuala, Abe gives him the last piece of the crown. With the crown reformed, Nuada invokes the Golden Army and has them attack the agents. With counterattacking proving useless, as the soldiers magically reform themselves when destroyed, Hellboy challenges Nuada for the right to the crown and Nuada has to accept as Hellboy (as Anung un Rama (the Beast of the Apocalypse) is royalty. Hellboy defeats Nuada and spares his life but Nuada tries to stab Hellboy in the back. In an effort to stop her brother Nuala commits suicide. Abe rushes to Nuala's body and physically tells her how he feels before she dies. Liz then melts the crown and destroys the Golden Army forever. As the BPRD agents leave the underground compound, Manning reprimands them for their actions but to his surprise Hellboy, Liz, Abe and Johann hand over their belts (even though Hellboy keeps his pistol) and they announce their resignation from the bureau. As they walk away Hellboy contemplates his future with his baby and Liz stops and corrects him saying "babies", surprising him with that fact that she's pregnant with twins.
Characters:
Hellboy (Ron Perlman): The title character of the movies. Hellboy was brought into the world by Rapsutin when he was a baby but he grew up raised by humans in secret at the BPRD. Hellboy wants to fit in among the humans who raised him but he has trouble dealing with his demon heritage and the fact that he was brought into the world to destroy it. He falls in love with Liz Sherman and despite how many times she left the BPRD, in many cases he would be the one to go after to her to bring her back. He finally managed to win her over, promising that while he understood why she was interested in Myers he could promise her
Liz Sherman (Selma Blair): Liz Sherman is a pyrokinetic whose powers have left her a troubled young woman with a strong desire to be normal because there are very few things that are normal about her. In the first film Liz was terrified of what she could but by the second film, she had grown in confidence to the point where she could be 'on fire' literally. In the second film she has problems dealing with her relationship with Hellboy and the fact that she's pregnant with his twins doesn't make it easier for her. She ends up making a deal with the Angel of Death to save Hellboy's life, despite the severe consequences that would result from it.
Abe Sapien (Doug Jones): Abe is an Icthyo Sapien who was found in a Washington D.C hospital and shortly after his discovery he entered the BPRD. He is psychic, having the ability to know about a person without them telling him anything and he is capable of seeing the past or future of any object that he touches.
Johann Krauss (voiced by Seth MacFarlene): An ectoplasmic, Johann is very 'by-the-book' and doesn't take any nonsense. At first Hellboy does not get along with him, which leads to Johann pointing out Hellboy's weakness (being that he can't take criticism) but Krauss manages to get acceptance from the main group when he disobeys the rules and goes with Liz and Abe to save Hellboy's life without getting permission from the BPRD.
Tom Manning (Jeffery Tambor): Tom Manning is in charge of keeping the public from finding out about the BPRD and the existence of Hellboy, which is a difficult task since Hellboy is infamous for his many escapes from the BPRD, before ultimately succeeding in exposing the Bureau in the second film. After Professor Broom’s death Tom takes over as head of the BPRD and is briefly replaced by Johann Krauss after the public exposure of the Bureau.
Princess Nuala (Anna Walton): Nuala is the Elf Princess of the Underworld and Nuada's twin sister. Her relationship with her twin brother is described as being like a 'yin and yang' dynamic with her being "light" and Nuada being "dark". She falls in love with Abe but ends up killing herself to stop her brother from destroying humankind.
Prince Nuada "Silverdance" (Luke Goss): The main antagonist of the second film. Nuada wants to destroy humankind and is prepared to do whatever is necessary to achieve it. He is the Elf Prince of the Underworld and a martial art expert of extraordinary proficiency. He is defeated in a battle for the crown by Hellboy and when he tries to stab him in the back, he is killed by his sister when she commits suicide.
Professor Trevor Bruttenholm (John Hurt): Professor Broom is a paranormal advisor and is the head of the BPRD. Professor Broom was able to stop Rasputin from releasing the Seven Gods of Chaos and after he found the demon Hellboy he raised him as his own son. In the first film Professor Broom was murdered by Kroenen but he was seen at the beginning of the second film reading a bedtime story to a young Hellboy.
John Myers (Rupert Evans): John was only in the first film since the actor was unable to fit in the second film in his schedule. During his appearance in the first film, John was responsible for taking over the duty of looking after Hellboy when Agent Clay was deemed to be not firm enough with him. It was John who was able to convince Liz to return to the BPRD and he was in love with her, despite her ending up choosing to be with Hellboy. Liz was mainly attracted to John because he was normal, the only one out of their group that didn't have any extrodinary abilities and could blend in with the outside world. To explain his absence from the second film, it was revealed that Hellboy had John 'transferred' to Antartica.
Grigori Rasputin (Karel Roden) - Rasputin is a mystic who developed a dimensional portal device so that he could awaken the Seven Gods of Chaos that could help the Nazis win the war. He fails and is presumed dead until he is restored by his servant Ilsa and Kroenen. His main motive is to get Hellboy to fulfill his destiny and use his full power.
Ilsa von Hapustein (Biddy Hodson) - Ilsa is a close follower of Rasputin. On the night that Rasputin ‘died’ he granted Ilsa youth, beauty and the will to only serve him. With Kroenen’s help she succeeds in bringing Rasputin back to life.
Kroenen (Ladislav Beran) - A highly skilled assassin who apparently can’t be killed. Kroenen was responsible for the death of Hellboy’s father and he also critically wounded Agent Clay.
